Coahuitlán Totonac is spoken in Veracruz, Mexico, and has been variously ascribed to two different branches of the Totonacan family tree. While recent work has begun to bring empirical evidence to the internal structure of this family tree, there remain several important areas of disagreement, in addition to the disputed affiliation of Coahuitlán. This article informs the family tree and demonstrates that Coahuitlán belongs to the Northern branch using shared innovations and two computational methods. The comparative method seeks sets of shared innovations for evidence of subgrouping. This article presents proposed shared innovations in phonology, morphology, and lexicon, which fall into two sets, one belonging to the Sierra and Lowland branches, and the other belonging to the Northern. Coahuitlán Totonac overwhelmingly shares innovations found in Northern languages and lacks innovations found in Sierra. Two quantitative methods are also used to show that Coahuitlán groups groups closely with other Northern languages.

Insecticide resistant Myzus persicae (Sulzer) employ increased esterase activity to detoxify insecticides by hydrolysis and sequestration. The amount of esterase, and hence resistance, in individual aphids can be determined by measuring either overall naphthyl acetate hydrolysis in crude homogenates, or the specific enzyme responsible (E4 or FE4) after electrophoresis or immunological isolation. The ability of a total esterase assay, done in microplates, to discriminate between susceptible (S) aphids and resistant variants (R1, R2) with different amounts of E4/FE4, was compared with the resolving power of the more elaborate immunoassay technique. The immunoassay gave the better discrimination between variants, resolving them all with greater than 95% confidence, with particularly good separation of R1, from S. The microplate assay using crude homogenates, although a poorer discriminator, identified most of the very resistant (R2) aphids, and provided a robust and widely accessible method for broadly representing the resistance of field populations.

A UHV MBE apparatus in which the deposition of both group IV and group III-V components is possible without breaking vacuum has been utilized to compare the growth of GaAs epilayers on non-polar Si(100) and Ge coated Si(100) substrates. In addition, a comparison of GaAs epilayers grown on substrates cleaned by ex-situ techniques and on substrates given all UHV in-situ surface preparation was made. Defect reduction by the incorporation of strained-layer superlattice dislocation filters and by post-growth rapid thermal anneal (RTA) thermal cycles was also investigated. Optical and material properties comparable to MBE grown GaAs/GaAs were obtained for GaAs grown on Ge coated Si(100) substrates.
