This article investigates Classic Maya understandings of two particular animal species: the (gray) fox and the armadillo. We use these species as a point of entry into Classic Maya categorizations of the non-human animal world, examining the salient biological and physical characteristics of those animals that Classic-period artists and scribes chose to highlight. Rather than accepting the creatures depicted on painted pottery or referenced in hieroglyphic texts as generalized examples of particular kinds (i.e., simply “a fox” or “an armadillo”), however, we show how the evidence from ancient art, historical accounts, and contemporary ethnography points to an emphasis on specific beings, often named individuals, who engage in particular behaviors and relate to other entities (both human and non-human) in distinctive ways. Although this article focuses exclusively on the fox and the armadillo, those species serve as examples through which we consider the limitations of applying Western taxonomic categories to other systems of knowledge, as well as the possibilities for how we might catch glimpses of radically different ways of organizing the world.

Education is notoriously difficult to identify archaeologically, but crucial for understanding the inner workings of any society. Strikingly, in Mesoamerican archaeology, more seems to be known about the transmission of crafting skills than about practices of statecraft. Elsewhere in the ancient world, much evidence speaks to various social and institutional contexts in which specialized knowledge of histories, literacies, civics, and sciences was generated and taught as vital to state-making projects. Yet these same contexts among the Classic Period Maya (ad 200–900) remain poorly understood and under-theorized. Pulling from comparative research alongside recent work at the site of Xultun, Guatemala, this article explores how educational systems may have worked in Classic-era Maya polities—assessing evidence for educational loci, the different forms that education might assume, and the varied curricula that likely existed across different cities and particular demographics. Through this discussion, I seek to shed some light on the actors, gendered exclusions and diverse arrangements of pedagogy in Maya society, and grant further insight into how specialized bodies of knowledge (transmitted within formal educational institutions) were built into the very fabric of the Classic Maya states of which they were part.

This article presents an in-depth analysis of an important mural painting discovered within Structure 10K2 of the Los Sabios Group at the Classic Maya site of Xultun, Guatemala. We first discuss the composition of the mural scene and its central protagonist, a Late Classic period (a.d. 550–900) ruler of Xultun named Yax We'nel Chan K'inich, suggesting that it presents a ritual performance associated with an ancient New Year ceremony. Several attendant figures in the mural are labeled as members of a specialist order or category called Taaj, “obsidian,” and are marked by an unusual shared appearance. This “obsidian order” exhibits internal hierarchical ranking and is attested at other Classic Maya centers. In addition to discussing the overall content of the Xultun mural scene, we conduct a focused inquiry into these various Taaj individuals by presenting associated archaeological evidence and considering related epigraphic data. Through this analysis of the Taaj, we shed light on a previously unknown aspect of Maya courtly life and organization that is relevant to models of sovereignty, governance, and ritual performance in the Classic Maya world.

Maya murals depicting scenes of courtly life are well known from sites such as Bonampak; far less common are scenes depicting life outside the royal sphere. Recent excavations at Xultun in Guatemala have revealed well-preserved murals in a domestic context that offer a fresh perpective on life in the Maya court, that of the priests, scribes and artists who attended the royal governor. Here, the authors decode the images to reveal the lives and activities of those who planned, performed and recorded official events in Classic-period Xultun. One of only two well-preserved examples of eastern Maya lowland wall painting from the Late Classic period, this rare display of master craftsmanship outside of the royal court sheds new light on the lives of those who produced it.

Controlled amounts of colloidal Au nanoparticles (NPs), electrochemically pre-synthesized, were directly deposited on MWCNTs sensor devices by electrophoresis. Pristine and Au-functionalized MWCNT networked films were tested as active layers in resistive gas sensors for detection of pollutant gases. Au-modified CNT-chemiresistor demonstrated higher sensitivity to NO2 detecting up to sub-ppm level compared to pristine one. The investigation of the cross-sensitivity towards other pollutant gases revealed the decrease of the sensitivity to NO2 with the increase of Au content, and, on the other side, the increase of that to H2S; therefore the fine tune of the metal loading on CNTs has allowed to control not only the gas sensitivity but also the selectivity towards a specific gaseous analyte. Finally, the sensing properties of Au-decorated CNT sensor seem to be promising in environmental and automotive gas sensing applications, based on low power consumption and moderate operating temperature.

Objective - After a review of recent developments in the economic evaluation of mental health care, the study described in this paper suggests a methodology for the measurement and evaluation of costs in the Italian psychiatric system. Method and results - To conduct such an evaluation it is necessary to identify all relevant services, collect data on patients' receipt or utilization of health services (direct costs) and other services and resources within the socio- economic system (indirect costs), and to attach monetary values for the costs. A detailed unit cost list (LICU) was constructed for facilities available at South-Verona Community Psychiatric Service (CPS), as well as in many other community-based psychiatric services in Italy. This list covers psychiatric services, other public and private health services, criminal justice services, voluntary organisations and self-help groups. The procedure for calculating costs in three of these facilities (hospital inpatient service, psychiatric outpatient service and rehabilitation groups) are described in this paper in detail. A new instrument (ICAP) was developed to collect the data required to calculate the costs of community care for individual patients. In order to check the applicability and comprehensibility of the instrument, and the time ne- eded for its administration, the ICAP was tested with five patients. Conclusions - It will be interesting to utilise ICAP and LICU in a larger sample. The methodology described here would provide the basis for epidemiologically-based studies, as well as exploration of the factors which predict cost differences (such as socio-demographic characteristics, diagnosis, psychiatric history, ecc). It is important to emphasise the insights for policy and practice which can flow for the merged examination of costs, needs and outcomes. This research is presently in progress in South-Verona.

Aims – Assessment of the efficacy of the rehabilitation approach that is recommended by the manual VADO (AAOS in English: Abilities Assessment and Objectives Setting) in schizophrenic syndromes. Methods – Controlled trial, partly with individual randomisation. Centres were invited to recruit 10 patients who in most centres were randomly allocated either to the VADO approach or to usual rehabilitation practice. At least two professionals for each centre attended a brief intensive training course. Patients were assessed at baseline and six months later with a) the FPS scale, which is an improvement on the DSMIV SOFAS; b) the BPRS 4.0; c) AR, a clinical tool that is contained in VADO. Results – 55 patients received the experimental interventions and 40 the control one. Six months later greater significant improvements were observed in the experimental group, both in social functioning and in psychopathology. Conclusions – The dissemination of structured rehabilitation approaches that are based on personalized definition of objective, intensive progress monitoring, patient's therapeutic education and validated strategies and do not imply additional costs, may be warranted. A longer follow–up is under way.

Objective – The study of the relation between treatment costs and disability of psychiatric patient groups. Design – Perspective assessment of costs and disability of 1371 adult psychiatric patients in charge at two Operative Psychiatric Units (OPU), followed during an average period of 9 months. Data are related to all OPU's psychiatric services, including ambulatory, full or half-residential and psychiatric departments of acute hospital services. Setting — OPUs of Magenta (MI) and Desio (MI). Methods – The disability level has been measured by Health of the Nation Outcome Scales (HoNOS) filled in at the inclusion of the patient in the study and every three—months on average thereafter. Besides other HoNOSs have been filled in both at admission and discharge from psychiatric departments of acute hospitals, Residential Centres of psychiatric Therapies and Rehabilitation and Guarded Communities. All patients have been grouped using the main psychiatric diagnosis (first digit ICD—10) and the maximum disability level shown in the whole period of the study. Direct costs of publicly financed psychiatric services have only been considered. Their attribution to each patient has been made applying standard costs or tariffs (diagnostic procedures) to the data perspectively collected by the regional Register and a purposely designed protocol. Results – Total cost of 1371 patients has been 9771.1 million lire with a cost per patient of 7127000 lire (sd 19499000) and a cost per «day in charge» of 27172 lire (sd 68358). The cost per day has been found unrelated with the length of observed time frame. At the inclusion the mean level of disability has been 4.26 points (sd 3.73) and 3.19 points (sd 3.26) at the end of the study. Its value, measured at maximum level shown by each problem in the whole period of study, has been 6.00 points (sd 4.64). Disability and treatment cost of each patient did result directly related (r = 0.626, p = 0.0001). All patients have been grouped in 12 classes with a significant (p = 0,0001) overall difference on both their disability level and treatment cost. Conclusion – All adult psychiatric patients could be grouped in disability related classes which sometimes have also a different treatment cost. A study on a greater number of patients is needed to confirm these results. It may also provide a more reliable basis for a new financing system of psychiatric services.

Economic evaluations of Pharmaceuticals are increasingly being conducted in conjunction with randomized phase III clinical trials to meet the demand for pharmacoeconomic data when new products are launched. While the need for such data is often global, the trials in which relevant information may be collected are often conducted in only one or a limited number of countries. A critical issue is how data from pivotal clinical trials in one setting can serve as the basis for pharmacoeconomic evaluations in others. We address this issue and report on four economic evaluations that we undertook in conjunction with a recent U.S. phase III clinical trial of recombinant human deoxyribonuclease (rhDNase), which is used to improve pulmonary function in patients with cystic fibrosis (CF). The objective of these evaluations was to estimate the potential impact of rhDNase therapy in France, Germany, Italy, and the United Kingdom on the direct costs of medical care for the treatment of respiratory tract infections (RTIs) in patients with CF. Visual masking assesses visual perception and attention; it occurs when a visual stimulus (mask) interferes with the perception of a stimulus that the participant is trying to identify (target). A backward masking study (target presented before mask) was performed on 662 children without disabilities (338 females), aged between 6 and 17 years, in order to evaluate if performance varies with age. In the masking procedure 10 letters were presented through a tachistoscope as target stimuli. Fragments of letters oriented at random (‘noise’) represented the mask. A slight improvement of visual performance from the beginning of school age to 9–12 years of age was found. This paper gives normative data for the most important parameters which can be used as a standardized reference for the procedure employed. We also studied 113 children with epilepsy (56 females), aged between 5 and 19 years, who attended a mainstream school and had been seizure free for at least 2 years. Children were tested just before starting antiepileptic drug withdrawal and re-tested 1 year later; they were drug free for 3 months before the second test. These children showed, during and after treatment, only slightly worse results when compared with healthy children of the same age; after therapy withdrawal, their visual performance slightly improved but this was not statistically significant.

La ricerca di modalità adeguate con cui, date le risorse a disposizione, procedere alla remunerazione dei costi dei servizi sanitari pubblici può essere definita come “a never ending task”. La ragione principale consiste nel fatto che, in un contesto in cui prevalgono criteri regolatori ispirati alla universalità dell'offerta e alla equità di accesso ai servizi, le modalità di allocazione delle risorse tra i vari produttori e tra le varie tipologie di servizio incorporano, accanto al contenuto “tecnico”, valenze di natura più generale che in qualche modo rappresentano le istanze legate ai criteri regolatori appena richiamati. In altri termini qualsiasi modalità di remunerazione dei costi di qualsiasi servizio sanitario pubblico, cioè finanziato con risorse pubbliche, è chiamata ad assolvere contemporaneamente ad una duplice funzione, dovendo rappresentare uno strumento orientato verso il perseguimento di maggiori livelli sia di efficienza allocativa, sia di equità distributiva intesa come opportunità di accesso ai servizi.

In Italy buffalo milk is an important animal product utilized solely for the manufacture of Mozzarella cheese. Of an estimated population of 200000 buffalo there are ∼25000 controlled animals. The average milk production, expressed over 270 d lactation, is 2000 kg/head with average fat and protein contents of 82·6 and 46·4 g/l respectively (Associazione Italiana Allevatori, 1996). In recent years there has been a steady increase in the number of dairy buffalo replacing dairy cows as a consequence of the European Union quota system.

The cheesemaking qualities of milk depend on many factors, the most important of which are the concentrations of intact casein and fat. Milk in which casein has been broken down by proteolytic enzymes is of less value to cheese manufacturers (Lucey & Kelly, 1994). Plasmin (EC 3.4.21.7), the most important endogenous milk proteinase, occurs in milk together with its inactive proenzyme, plasminogen (Schaar & Funke, 1986). Plasmin hydrolyses αs-casein and β-casein, although κ-casein has been reported to be resistant (Fox, 1981). However, Andrews & Alichanidis (1983) found κ-casein to be hydrolysed quite rapidly by plasmin. Plasmin activity is higher in mastitic than normal milk (Bastian & Brown, 1996). Stage of lactation affects plasmin activity: late lactation is associated with higher concentrations of plasmin (Gilmore et al. 1995; Baldi et al. 1996). Thus, plasmin could be a major problem in herds with seasonal breeding such as buffalo, which progress through lactation in synchrony and are therefore at a similar stage of lactation at a given time.

The cascade of reactions leading to plasminogen activation is regulated by a complex network of molecular interactions between plasminogen activators (PA; EC 3.4.21.31) and at least three types of specific PA inhibitors (PAI-1; PAI-2; PAI-3; Saksela, 1985; Politis, 1996). There are two types of highly specific PA: tissue-PA (t-PA) and urokinase-PA (u-PA) (Saksela & Rifkin, 1988). PA activity is higher in mastitic than normal milk (Heegaard et al. 1994a). However, previous studies on PA in milk were carried out on bovine and caprine milk. No information is available on the presence and type of PA in buffalo milk. Thus the objective of the present study was to determine the level and type of PA in different fractions of buffalo milk: casein, serum, and somatic cells.
