Methiozolin Efficacy for Annual Bluegrass (Poa annua) Control on Sand- and Soil-Based Creeping Bentgrass Putting Greens

Methiozolin is a new isoxazoline herbicide being investigated for selective POST annual bluegrass control in creeping bentgrass putting greens. Glasshouse and field research was conducted from 2010 to 2012 in Tennessee and Texas to evaluate annual bluegrass control efficacy with methiozolin. Application placement experiments in the glasshouse illustrated that root absorption was required for POST annual bluegrass control with methiozolin at 1,000 g ai ha−1. Soil-plus-foliar and soil-only applications of methiozolin reduced annual bluegrass biomass greater than treatments applied foliar-only. Field experiments evaluated annual bluegrass control efficacy with two application rates (500 and 1,000 g ha−1) and six application regimes (October, November, December, October followed by [fb] November, November fb December, and October fb November fb December) on sand- and soil-based putting greens. Annual bluegrass control with methiozolin at 1,000 g ha−1 on sand-based greens ranged from 70 to 72% compared to 87 to 89% on soil-based greens. Treatment at 500 g ha−1 controlled annual bluegrass 57 to 64% on sand-based greens compared to 72 to 80% on soil-based greens. Most sequential methiozolin application regimes controlled annual bluegrass more than single applications. On sand-based greens, sequential application programs controlled annual bluegrass 70 to 79% compared to 85 to 92% on soil-based greens. Responses indicate that methiozolin is a root-absorbed herbicide with efficacy for selective control of annual bluegrass in both sand- and soil-based creeping bentgrass putting greens.

Growth and water use of kabuli-type chickpea was measured during the 1982/83 and 1983/84 growing seasons in northern Syria under rainfed conditions. Winter-sown (November) and springsown (March) crops of cv. ILC 482 were grown in 1982/83 while in 1983/84 spring-sown crops of contrasting genotypes (ILC 482, ILC 1929 and ILC 3279) were compared.
In 1982/83, shoot dry matter and seed yields of the winter-sown crop were almost twice those of the spring-sown crop although the water use of both crops was almost the same. Root growth of both crops was most rapid before flowering but continued until maturity (early June) in the winter-sown and until mid to late pod filling (also early June) in the spring-sown crop. Root dry weight (c. 45 g/m2) and length (c. 45 cm/cm2) were similar in both crops during pod filling.
In 1983/84, shoot weight, root weight and root length were similar in all genotypes but the later maturity of ILC 3279 resulted in lower seed yield and hence harvest index, and greater water use.
The root length density decreased approximately logarithmically with depth in the soil profile although comparison between seasons and with other published results showed that the relations could not be used predictively. Water use efficiency was poorer in the second, drier season and was almost doubled by winter sowing.

Barley (cv. Beecher) was grown at two sites (Jindiress and Breda) in northern Syria, chosen for their contrasting edaphic and climatic conditions. At both sites, three fertilizer treatments were applied zero (Z), 60 kg P2O5/ha (P), and 60 kg P2O5/ha with 60 kg N/ha (NP) and measurements made of shoot and root growth, and water use.
The growth of crops not given fertilizer was similar at both sites and early growth was increased by the application of fertilizers. However, at maturity, yield was increased at Jindiress by giving N and P together, but not by P alone, while at Breda P alone increased yields but additional N produced no additional yield. There were marked effects of fertilizer on crop development at Jindiress; anthesis and maturity were about 14 days earlier in the NP treatment than in the Z treatment.
Root growth was also affected by fertilizer applications and there were small but significant differences in growth between the sites. The proportion of root weight: total plant weight was greater than commonly observed in temperate cereals and there were substantial differences between the sites in the pattern of root distribution within the soil profile.
The total amount of water used by the crops differed between the sites but was largely unaffected by fertilizer treatment at each site. Evapotranspiration during the winter when the soil was recharged with water was about 50% of the seasonal total. At Jindiress, the pattern of water extraction from the profile and the root distribution were similar before flowering but at Breda, there was no correspondence. Rates of water inflow varied with both site and time.
Crop characteristics that may be associated with increased yields are discussed. Deeper, more extensive rooting is unlikely to be useful in such regions but rapid early growth of both shoots and roots may allow water to be used more efficiently.

Farming systems in west Asia and north Africa have evolved to cope with the problems of highly variable and, frequently, chronically deficient rainfall. Cereals (mainly wheat and barley) are the dominant arable crops with food legumes (chickpea, lentil and faba bean) occupying only 5 to 10% of the area planted to cereals. Livestock is closely integrated into the farming system and crop production practices often reflect the importance of animals as a major source of income, particularly on the smaller farms. Soils of the region are predominantly calcareous, frequently phosphate deficient, and their depth and texture are important in determining the maximum amount of water that can be stored which, in turn, may determine the effective length of the growing season.
Rain falls mainly during the winter months so that crops must often rely on stored soil moisture when they are growing most rapidly. Analysis of equations relating crop growth and water use shows that there are three ways in which the ‘water use efficiency’ of dry matter production can be increased. First, the amount of dry matter produced per unit of water transpired might be increased; second, if the water supply is limited, the amount of water transpired might be increased relative to evaporation from the soil surface; and third, the total amount of water used might be increased to produce extra growth provided that this results in increased transpiration rather than simply increasing evaporation from the soil surface.
These three possible routes to increased crop growth are reviewed in relation to possible improvements in water management and crop genotypes in the Mediterranean environment. Scope for improving transpiration efficiency is limited although genotypic differences exist and may be useful in the future. More immediately, changes in crop management, such as applications of fertilizer, improved tillage and better weed control, will all increase the amount of water transpired. Application of mulches will also reduce evaporation from the soil surface but crop residues are usually eaten by livestock and are, therefore, often unavailable.
The barley/livestock farming system of west Asia is used as a case study to illustrate how the Fanning Systems Programme of ICARDA has developed on-farm research programmes of direct relevance to current farming systems. Research on experimental sites directed at improving water use efficiency has been developed into on-farm trials and into collaborative trials with the Syrian Soils Directorate.

Introduction:
This study was undertaken to identify prehospital system and management deficiencies and preventable deaths between 01 January 1997 and 31 December 1998 in 243 consecutive Victorian road crash victims with fatal outcomes.
Methods:The complete prehospital and hospital records, the deposition to the coroner, and autopsy findings were evaluated by computer analysis and peer group review with multidisciplinary discussion.
Results:One-hundred eighty-seven (77%) patients had prehospital errors or inadequacies, of which 135 (67%) contributed to death. Three-hundred ninety-four (67%) related to management and 130 (22%) to system deficiencies. Technique errors, diagnosis delays, and errors relatively were infrequent. One of 24 deaths at the crash scene or en route to hospital was considered to be preventable and two potentially preventable.
Conclusion:The high prevalence of prehospital deficiencies has been addressed by a Ministerial Task Force on Trauma and Emergency Services and followed by the introduction of a new trauma care system in Victoria.

INTRODUCTION
Chapter Five closed with a philosophical dilemma. It is plausible, on the one hand, to view theoretical models in a conditional way, as vehicles for exploring the possible; and it also makes sense to locate the explanatory potential of such models in this very capacity to put constraints on the actual trajectories that nature might take. On the other hand, the most obvious way that theory might play this constraining role – by approximating fundamental ecological laws – does not appear to be an option. The last two decades have seen ecology in headlong retreat from the idea that there are such fundamental truths. The tendency these days is to celebrate the contingency and historicity of ecological phenomena; even the model builders themselves tend to take a dim view of the prospects for the existence of genuine ecological laws. We are left with some difficult philosophical questions. Do theoretical models really play a genuinely explanatory role? If so, wherein lies their explanatory force, and what are the methodological consequences for the construction and evaluation of such models?
This chapter, as well as Chapters Seven and Eight to follow, turn explicitly to the philosophical literature on scientific explanation for the resources to address these questions. Unfortunately, since the philosophers are not much better off than the ecologists in coming to grips with these matters, there is no consensus philosophical account that can simply be wheeled into position to resolve the problems.

INTRODUCTION
This chapter and the next defend five related claims. In the process, a philosophical account of theoretical modeling, as an explanatory practice, is outlined. The philosophical model is then applied to the controversies that prompted this philosophical excursion in the first place, the controversies identified in Chapter Five.
Here are the five claims. First, there is a tension in our explanatory practices between pursuit of the detailed knowledge of causal mechanisms and processes needed for successful causal explanation on the one hand, and pursuit of systematizing or unifying frameworks that will enable us to cover a broad range of cases with a minimum expenditure of cognitive capital on the other. This leads to the second thesis: Salmon's two venerable intuitions regarding scientific explanation correspond to distinct explanatory virtues, and while there may be some worlds where explanations virtuous on one score are likely to be virtuous on the second as well, ours does not appear to be such a world – at least not when it comes to ecology. The third thesis is that actual scientific explanations embody elements of both virtues, sometimes trading off systematizing power for a clearer grasp of causal structure and sometimes making the trade-off in the other direction, depending on the explanatory needs at hand. Thus actual explanations can be located on a kind of continuum, with “pure” causal explanation and “pure” systematization as the idealized endpoints, and with location on the continuum signaling the mixture of the two virtues to be associated with a given explanation.

INTRODUCTION
What is the cognitive payoff of theoretical modeling? Put another way, what role does model building play in ecology as an epistemological enterprise? The answer to this question is important because it shapes expectations about what successful theoretical modeling should look like; and the controversies surrounding theoretical model building in ecology have largely been fueled by the (usually implicit) adoption of diverging sets of expectations. The role of theoretical modeling within the cognitive economy of ecological practice is, at bottom, a question for philosophy of science. Thus it comes as no surprise that appeals to philosophical accounts of science show up at various points in the course of this debate. However, philosophy has not had a very salubrious effect, primarily for the following two reasons. First, most of the appeal has been to a kind of Popperian vision of theory testing that does not capture the nature of theoretical modeling in ecology very well (Sloep 1993). Second, when the sampling of philosophy of science is both more current and more complete, we see that there is, in fact, no philosophical consensus to turn to on this matter.
The goal over the next four chapters is to identify the cognitive significance of theoretical modeling and thereby the standards of virtue to which such treatments ought to be held. The task is divided into several parts. This chapter is dedicated to understanding why theoretical modeling in ecology has been so controversial.

INTRODUCTION
The previous chapter outlined four basic objections to the definition of ecology as the science of the struggle for existence. Not surprisingly, these four objections correspond to four enduring foundational issues in the practice of the discipline itself. The goal of the present chapter is to deepen the analysis and to gain a clearer picture of what is at stake with each of these issues while, at the same time, substantiating the claim that each of these four areas has indeed been a significant locus for ecological controversy. The strategy is to look ultimately at some of the ways these foundational controversies have been manifest in the history of ecology, and I do this in two ways: first, by outlining the historical development of the various intellectual traditions that collectively comprise the field of ecology (section 2.3), and second, by exploring a series of eruptions of foundational debate that Robert May has dubbed ecology's twelve-year cycle (section 2.4). Before embarking on the historical study, some time is devoted to clarifying the philosophical framework for the investigations; attention is devoted, in particular, to the concept of a scientific field. This is the task of section 2.2.

For most of its early history, philosophy of science has been preoccupied with the scientific theory as the unit of scientific structure most germane to philosophical analysis. Eugene Odum has called ecology the link between the natural and the social sciences. While that may be a little strong, ecology does probably have more in common, conceptually and methodologically, with the social sciences than with any other natural science, and in this respect it occupies a unique position among the span of scientific disciplines. Furthermore, the history of ecology is rich in foundational controversy and philosophical debate. Finally, given ecology's fundamental role in the design and implementation of environmental policy, it is hard to imagine a science that has more social and practical relevance. For these reasons, one would expect ecology to be one of the more visible targets for the philosophy of science. However, philosophers have been slow to turn their attention toward ecology; there has been very little sustained examination of foundational controversies in the discipline. This book contributes toward filling that void. It does so primarily by examining a number of central foundational issues in ecology; in the process, both the nature of ecology as a scientific field and its role in the process of environmental decision making are clarified.
To a first approximation, issues in the philosophy of ecology can be divided into two groups. In one group, the questions are internal. They involve uncertainty over the nature of genuinely ecological questions, conflicting visions of sound ecological practice, and related matters.

INTRODUCTION
The idea of a balance of nature reaches back into antiquity. Egerton (1973) has provided perhaps the most detailed look at this history, tracing the idea from its early manifestations in ancient Greek thought to its most explicit formulations in the ecological studies of the present century. As he points out, however, one of the most striking features of this notion has been its typically implicit character. It usually functions as a background assumption that is rarely brought forward for explicit study. This remains largely true of the balance of nature idea in ecology as a self-conscious scientific field; it has worked in the background, shaping inquiry, but it has rarely been hauled out into the daylight and closely examined.
This chapter does not attempt a comprehensive look at all the various sides of the balance of nature idea (for a comprehensive review see Pimm 1991). Instead, it focuses on one particular aspect – the role that balance of nature plays as the linchpin among a constellation of ideas that jointly served, at least at the hands of some ecologists, to set the course of inquiry for population and community ecology. In keeping with its traditional background role, the balance of nature idea – together with the associated ideas that emphasize the prevalence of biotic interaction, density dependence, and competition – has exerted this guiding influence in a largely implicit fashion.

INTRODUCTION
This chapter begins with a confession. I have, to this point, been taking advantage of the ambiguity of the term theoretical, using it to describe what we can now see to be two quite distinct components of the process of model building. On the one hand, there are ideas about abstract ecological dispositions; on the other, there are the theoretical models we use to articulate those ideas. Both can properly be seen as the domain of the theoretical. But it is important to recognize the distinction because these two readings confront the problem of interpretation, of bringing the theoretical ideas into contact with the empirical realm, in quite distinct ways. This, in turn, becomes important if we are going to resolve the final issue in the grounding of theoretical explanation. How does this business of model building yield invariant counterfactual purchase over the phenomena? How do theories, as explanatory tools, manage to constrain the possibilities? The distinction is also crucial to a second fundamental issue that this chapter addresses: the relationship between truth and explanatory success. With these final two issues confronted, the chapter will return, at last, to the controversies that were identified in Chapter Five as standing in need of deeper philosophical analysis.
TWO SENSES OF THEORETICAL
We begin with the distinction that has just been drawn between the two senses of theoretical. The difference between the two notions is perhaps best seen by looking at the contrast class for each.
