A mentor training workshop focused on fostering diversity engenders lasting impact on mentoring techniques: Results of a long-term evaluation

Introduction:
Trainees and investigators from underrepresented minority (URM) backgrounds face unique challenges to establishing successful careers in clinical and translational research. Structured training for mentors is an important mechanism to increase the diversity of the research workforce. This article presents data from an evaluation of the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) Center for AIDS Research (CFAR) Mentoring the Mentors program aimed at improving mentors’ competency in working with diverse mentees in HIV research.
Methods:Mentors from around the USA who had in one of seven separate 2-day training workshops conducted from 2013 to 2020 were invited to participate in an online evaluation survey of their experiences with the training and their subsequent mentoring activities.
Results:There was a high response rate (80%) among the 226 mentors invited to complete the survey. The 180 respondents were diverse in demographics, professional disciplines, and geographic distribution. Quantitative and qualitative data indicate a lasting positive impact of the training, with sustained improvements documented on a validated measure of self-appraised mentoring competency. Respondents also endorsed high interest in future, follow-up training with continued focus on topics related to mentoring in the context of diversity.
Conclusion:The evaluation of the UCSF CFAR Mentoring the Mentors program showed lasting impact in improving mentoring practices, coupled with high interest in continued in-depth training in areas focused on diversity, equity, and inclusion.

Objectives
Low level inflammatory Mild Encephalitis (ME) mechanisms were suspected in a subgroup of treatment resistant hospitalised affective and schizophrenic spectrum disorder patients.
MethodsWe analysed albumin, IgG, IgA, IgM, oligoclonal IgG and specific antibodies in paired cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and serum samples from patients with affective (n=24) or schizophrenic spectrum disorders (n=39). Numerical and graphical interpretation of CSF protein data was performed by Reibergrams with reference to a large control group (n= 4100).
ResultsIn 41% of the psychiatric patients (n=63) we observed CSF pathologies: 14% displayed intrathecal humoral immune responses, 10% slightly increased CSF cell counts (5-8/μL) and 29% had moderate blood-CSF barrier dysfunctions, in 24% as the only pathological sign with normal IgG, IgA and IgM concentrations in CSF (p= 0.9 testing the null hypothesis for intrathecal synthesis with reference to Qmean of the reference group). In the affective (n= 24) spectrum 20% displayed a systemic immune reaction as detected by oligoclonal IgG. In probable 6% of virusspecific, bacterial or autoimmune associated disorder with CNS involvement. Elevated CSF neopterin concentration in 34% of the patients was interpreted as an increased release from astrocytes or from other glia cells.
ConclusionThe low level immune response and barrier dysfunctions are discussed on the base of a ME pathomechanism in subgroups of psychiatric patients. CSF analysis is shown to be a useful diagnostic tool for differential diagnosis in psychiatric diseases.

Background:
Individuals with bipolar disorder (BD) are differentially affected by insulin resistance. Individuals without history of mental disorder with insulin resistance usually have high peripheral concentrations of phenylalanine (PHE) and tyrosine (TYR) together. Catecholamine dysfunction is described to be a state-dependend phenomen in patients suffering from BD. Catecholamines are synthesized from essential amino acids PHE and TYR which are biotransformed to dopamine and subsequently converted to nor/adrenaline. Amino acid dysregulation may be a possible mediator of insulin resistance in BD.
Patients/Methods:Peripheral PHE and TYR concentrations were investigated in euthymic adults with BD. Amino acid differences between normal and overweight individuals with BD were evaluated and outcomes were correlated with the measures of glucose homeostasis.
Results:Mean plasma PHE to TYR ratio (PHE/TYR) was at the upper limit of the normal range in the whole sample. Enrolled subjects with PHE/TYR beyond the limits of normal exhibited the highest number of prior affective episodes. Sex-specific differences were noted as overweight BD females showed different profiles than normal-weight women. In the overweight females, PHE and TYR concentrations were significantly higher compared to normal-weight women. Significant correlations were noticed between PHE, TYR and PHE/TYR with insulin/Homeostasis Model of Assessment (HOMA)-IR in the whole sample and the subgroup of BD women.
Conclusion:These significant differences in gender, amino acid pathways and in correlations with immune marker as well as insulin function have not been reported previously. Taken together, increased levels of PHE in BD should be considered when adjudicating diabetes risk especially in women.

The Wootton Center for Astrophysical Plasma Properties (WCAPP) is a new center focusing on the spectroscopic properties of stars and accretion disks using “at-parameter” experiments. Currently, these experiments use the X-ray output of the Z machine at Sandia National Laboratories — the largest X-ray source in the world — to heat plasmas to the same conditions (temperature, density, and radiation environment) as those observed in astronomical objects. The experiments include measuring (1) density-dependent opacities of iron-peak elements at solar interior conditions, (2) spectral lines of low-Z elements at white dwarf photospheric conditions, (3) atomic population kinetics of neon in a radiation-dominated environment, and (4) resonant Auger destruction (RAD) of silicon at conditions found in accretion disks around supermassive black holes. In particular, we report on recent results of our experiments involving helium at white dwarf photospheric conditions. We present results showing disagreement between inferred electron densities using the Hβ line and the He I 5876 Å line, most likely indicating incompleteness in our modeling of this helium line.
Defect structure and luminescence behaviour of agate — results of electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) and cathodoluminescence (CL) studies

Samples of agate and quartz incrustations from different parent volcanic rocks of certain world-wide localities were investigated by EPR, CL and trace element analysis. In all agate samples the following paramagnetic centres were detected:, E′1, [AlO4]0 [FeO4/M+]0 and [GeO4/M+]0. Centres of the type [TiO4/Li+]0 and [TiO4/H+]0, which were detected in quartz of the parent volcanics, are absent in agate. Generally, the abundance of centres (silicon vacancy) and E′1 centres (oxygen vacancy) in agate is remarkably higher than in quartz. The high defect density in agates points to rapid growth of silica from a strongly supersaturated solution probably with a noncrystalline precursor.
CL microscopy reveals internal structures and zoning in agates and quartz incrustations which clearly differ from those discernible by conventional polarizing microscopy. The CL spectra of agates differ from those of quartz from crystalline rocks. At least three broad emission bands were detected in the CL spectra: a blue band of low intensity, a yellow band at about 580 nm, and an intense red band at 650 nm. The CL emission at 650 nm shows some relations to the hydroxyl or alkali content and the abundance of centres and E′1 centres. The emission intensity increases during electron bombardement due to the conversion of different precursors (e.g. ≡Si-O-H, ≡Si-O-Na groups) into hole centres. Another conspicuous feature in the CL spectra of agates is the existence of a yellow emission band centred at around 580 nm. The predominance of the yellow CL emission band and the high concentration of E′1 centres are typical for agates of acidic volcanics and are indicative of a close relationship between the two.

Polycrystalline samples of the single-layered cobaltate La2-xCaxCoO4 were prepared in a wide doping range of 0 ≤ x ≤ 1.5. Structural properties were characterized at room temperature. The orthorhombic distorted structure of the mother compound La2CoO4 changes to a tetragonal structure for x = 0.5 and then becomes orthorhombic again for x > 0.5. The magnetic properties were investigated in the temperature range from 5 K ≤ T ≤ 300 K. With increasing hole-doping a successive decrease of antiferromagnetic exchange is observed for x ≤ 0.5 whereas an increase of ferromagnetic exchange evolves for x ≥ 0.5.

Three hundred and seventy-six patients attending their general practitioner with cutaneous warts at five health centres in Northern Ireland were screened for human papilloma virus (HPV) types 1 and 2 IgM antibody using an indirect immunofluorescence test. Eighty-eight (23·4%) patients were positive for HPV type 1 IgM and 156 (41·5%) for HPV type 2 IgM. HPV 1 IgM antibody was significantly more likely to be associated with plantar warts than warts elsewhere (P 0·0001). HPV 2 IgM was present in 45 (34·1%) patients with plantar warts and 99 (45·6%) patients with warts at other sites (P=0·1). Evidence of multiple infection by HPV types 1 and 2 was demonstrated by the finding of HPV 1 and 2 IgM antibodies in the sera of 16 (4·3%). HPV 4 was found in only 1 out of 30 biopsies and HPV 4 IgM was undetectable in 50 randomly chosen sera.

Since their discovery, laser accelerated ion beams have been the subject of great interest. The ion beam peak power and beam emittance is unmatched by any conventionally accelerated ion beam. Due to the unique quality, a wealth of applications has been proposed, and the first experiments confirmed their prospects. Laser ion acceleration is strongly linked to the generation and transport of hot electrons by the interaction of ultra-intense laser light with matter. Comparing ion acceleration experiments at laser systems with different beam parameters and using targets of varying thickness, material and temperature, some insight on the underlying physics can be obtained. The paper will present experimental results obtained at different laser systems, first beam quality measurement on laser accelerated heavy ions, and ion beam source size measurements at different laser parameters. Using structured targets, we compare information obtained from micro patterned ion beams about the accelerating electron sheath, and the influence of magnetic fields on the electron transport inside conducting targets.

The optical properties of porous Si (p-Si) are compared to those of siloxene and its derivatives in order to gain more insight into the mechanism of the luminescence observed in p-Si. We report new results of photoluminescence (PL), photoluminescence excitation (PLE), time-dependent and pressure-dependent photoluminescence, and optically detected magnetic resonance (ODMR). Important information about the structural, electronic, and microscopic nature of the two classes of materials are deduced from these experiments. Annealed siloxene and p-Si show very similar properties, suggesting that siloxene-related structures, e.g. electrically isolated Si6-rings, might be responsible for the luminescence in p-Si. The Si-planes in as-prepared siloxene, with their green luminescence, are metastable and are readily oxidized into red-luminescent siloxene configurations.

The discovery of strong visible photoluminescence at room temperature from porous silicon has triggered new hope that light-emitting devices compatible with existing Si-technology might become possible. We first review the luminescence behavior observed in silicon-based materials such as amorphous Si, microcrystalline Si, or SiO2. We then critically discuss the present model for the luminescence from porous silicon based on quantum confinement in view of the growing experimental evidence for the importance of both hydrogen and oxygen to obtain efficient luminescence from this material. We propose an alternative explanation based on the presence of siloxene (SieO3H6) in porous silicon which is corroborated by experimental results obtained with photoluminescence, Raman and IR spectroscopy. An important aspect is that siloxene can be prepared by methods different from anodic oxidation, and one particular technique will be described together with possible ways to tune the luminescence energy.

The visible photoluminescence of electrochemically etched silicon wafers is studied by cw- and pulsed-laser excitation. Raman data and infrared transmission measurements on the same samples prove the presence of oxygen and hydrogen in different bonding configurations in the luminescent layers. Identical optical properties are found for chemically synthesized siloxene (Si6O3H6) and its derivates. We present evidence that the origin of the strong room temperature luminescence in “porous” silicon can be traced to siloxene derivates present in the samples.

The corrosion protective effect of the surface modification of corrosion sensitive glass surfaces and of ORMOCER (= organically modified ceramic) coatings is investigated. The surface modification provides a modest protection, perhaps useful for additional protection in combination with external glazing. The advantage is the “invisability” of the modification due to the thickness of several molecular layers. An effective protection can be obtained by a diffusion barrier pigmented ORMOCER coatings. First outdoor results on medieval glasses are very hopeful, but long period experience is necessary for wider application.
