This paper presents a vertically folded gap waveguide filter for use as the filter element for each antenna in an array of slotted waveguide antennas, at W-band. Loaded gap-waveguide resonators are used to reduce the footprint of the filter, and the filter is vertically folded to reduce the length. New input and output transitions are proposed, as well as inter-resonator coupling structures that conform to the basic gap-waveguide structure. A 7th order filter with a bandwidth of 10 GHz and a center frequency of 101 GHz is designed to meet geometric constraints of a transmitter system. A sensitivity analysis was performed on the structure to determine the required manufacturing tolerances. The filter was manufactured and measured yielding 10 dB of return loss in the passband and a detuning of the passband by 1 GHz. The return loss at 88 GHz peaked due to deviations in manufactured gap height in the gap waveguide. Deviations from the simulated response were accounted for with a parameter extraction from the measured results.

Researchers increasingly rely on aggregations of radiocarbon dates from archaeological sites as proxies for past human populations. This approach has been critiqued on several grounds, including the assumptions that material is deposited, preserved, and sampled in proportion to past population size. However, various attempts to quantitatively assess the approach suggest there may be some validity in assuming date counts reflect relative population size. To add to this conversation, here we conduct a preliminary analysis coupling estimates of ethnographic population density with late Holocene radiocarbon dates across all counties in California. Results show that counts of late Holocene radiocarbon-dated archaeological sites increase significantly as a function of ethnographic population density. This trend is robust across varying sampling windows over the last 5000 BP. Though the majority of variation in dated-site counts remains unexplained by population density. Outliers reveal how departures from the central trend may be influenced by regional differences in research traditions, development-driven contract work, organic preservation, and landscape taphonomy. Overall, this exercise provides some support for the “dates-as-data” approach and offers insights into the conditions where the underlying assumptions may or may not hold.

From 2014 to 2020, we compiled radiocarbon ages from the lower 48 states, creating a database of more than 100,000 archaeological, geological, and paleontological ages that will be freely available to researchers through the Canadian Archaeological Radiocarbon Database. Here, we discuss the process used to compile ages, general characteristics of the database, and lessons learned from this exercise in “big data” compilation.

A consensus conference on the reasons for the undertreatment of depression was organized by the National Depressive and Manic Depressive Association (NDMDA) on January 17–18,1996. The target audience included health policymakers, clinicians, patients and their families, and the public at large. Six key questions were addressed: (1) Is depression undertreated in the community and in the clinic? (2) What is the economic cost to society of depression? (3) What have been the efforts in the past to redress undertreatment and how successful have they been? (4) What are the reasons for the gap between our knowledge of the diagnosis and treatment of depression and actual treatment received in this country? (5) What can we do to narrow this gap? (6) What can we do immediately to narrow this gap?

Recrystallization of silicon-on-insulator (SOI) films using a line-source electron beam is described. This unique heat source can continuously emit several kilowatts of - 5 keV electrons into a beam 150 mm in length and - 2.5 mm in width, an exposure area which allows processing of 100 mm substrates in a single pass. An attractive aspect of this beam is the ability to control the beam profile, which in turn allows one to influence the thermal gradients present during recrystallization. Using a tightly focussed beam to recrystallize the SOI layer results in a film whose physical properties are generally attributed to films grown with a high thermal gradient at the solidifying liquid-solid interface (highly branched subboundaries with a maximum spacing of - 20 microns and several degrees of angular mismatch.) By reducing the gradient at the growth interface it is possible to achieve unbranched sub-boundaries with over 70 micron spacing and less than 0.5 degrees of out-of-plane tilt misalignment.

Malignant melanoma may metastasize to any anatomic site via the hematogenous route. A patient is described in whom a metastasis developed in the left maxillary antrum and nasal cavity and who received successful palliative surgical and radiotherapeutic treatment.

Metastatic carcinoma involving the paranasal sinuses has been reported most frequently secondary to renal cell tumors, followed by carcinoma of the lung and breast (Jortay, 1971; Robinson, 1973; Friedmann and Osborn, 1965; Bernstein et al., 1966). These tumor deposits are often diagnosed in a setting of diffuse metastatic disease or discovered at post-mortem examination. A patient recently treated at Pondville Hospital had symptomatic metastatic melanoma involving the left maxillary antrum and nasal cavity. Following surgical treat-ment, palliative radiotherapy was successfully delivered on three occasions providing symptomatic relief over the subsequent 17 months prior to the patient's death.

In a recent paper Joy and Porter [4] used the concept of stochastic dominance to address the question of whether or not mutual funds outperform the Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA). Since that time Meyer [5] has proven a theorem in the area of stochastic dominance which allows one to make further application of stochastic dominance to this question. The major purpose of this paper is to demonstrate the power and relevance of the recently developed stochastic dominance theorem in ordering investments for groups of investors. In doing so, some evidence is presented concerning mutual funds and the DJIA.
