TiC/H13 nanocomposite parts were processed by selective laser melting using various energy densities; one part also underwent hot isostatic pressing (HIP). The effect of energy density and HIPing on densification, microstructure, and hardness were evaluated. It was found that the densification was not largely affected by the energy density, but the HIP-treated sample displayed a large improvement in relative density. With increasing energy density, the microstructures showed high levels of dispersion of nanoparticles, while HIP treatment coarsened the microstructure and induced agglomeration. Both HIP treatment and increased energy density lowered hardness markedly; this was likely due to annealing effects.

The microstructure characteristics of nanocrystalline magnesium-based alloy processed by cryomilling and spark plasma sintering were investigated. The as-received and cryomilled powders and the consolidated bulk material were characterized by scanning and transmission electron microscopies, x-ray diffraction, and electron dispersive spectroscopy techniques. The cryomilled powders resulted in an average grain size of 25 nm. After spark plasma sintering, a bimodal grain size distribution with coarse grains around 500 nm and fine grains of 52 nm, which is one of the smallest grain sizes reported in bulk nanostructured Mg alloys, was found. Our results suggest this novel process as a viable method to provide new opportunities for the development of nanostructured Mg-based alloys.

Dental remineralization may be achieved by mediating the interactions between tooth surfaces with free ions and biomimetic peptides. We recently developed octuplet repeats of aspartate-serine-serine (DSS-8) peptide, which occurs in high abundance in naturally occurring proteins that are critical for tooth remineralization. In this paper, we evaluated the possible role of DSS-8 in dentin remineralization. Human dentin specimens were demineralized, exposed briefly to DSS-8 solution, and then exposed to concentrated ionic solutions that favor remineralization. Dentin nano-mechanical behaviors, hardness and elastic modulus, at various stages of treatment were determined by nanoindentation. The phase, microstructure and morphology of the resultant surfaces were characterized using grazing incidence X-ray diffraction, variable pressure scanning electron microscopy, and atomic force microscopy, respectively. Nanoindentation results show that DSS-8 remineralization effectively improves the mechanical and elastic properties of native dentin. Moreover, the hardness and elastic modulus for the DSS-8 treated dentin were significantly higher than surfaces remineralized without DSS-8.

Novel (Ba,Bi,Nb)-added TiO2 ceramic was previously proved to be potentially useful as a varistor material, and by varying atmosphere compensation the roles of barium and bismuth have been explored. The present work attempted to investigate how the third additive, niobium, operates on varistor characteristics. The content of added niobium is in the range from 0.125 to 1.0 cat. %, while that of the other additives is always maintained at a constant value. The results show that an adequate addition of niobium, 0.25 cat. % Nb, is beneficial to the improvement of varistor characteristics. The variations of varistor behavior are discussed in terms of a point defect model. Two kinds of charge compensation, for the substitutional incorporation of niobium into the titanium rutile lattice, are also used to illustrate the variation. The detailed results and discussions are shown in this paper.

Woven fabric composites have been used extensively as substrate materials for multilayer printed circuit boards. This paper presents a brief overview of the recent accomplishments in the modeling and characterization of woven fabric composites. Three analytical models have been developed to predict the thermo-mechanical properties of fabric composites with various weaving geometries. A three-dimensional finite element analysis has also been adopted to determine the properties of plain-weave fabric composites.

Parametric studies are performed for both hybrid and non-hybrid woven fabric composites to generate data for materials selection and design. These data are presented in the form of “structure-performance maps” where the unique characteristics and relative effectiveness of various woven fabric composites can be easily assessed. The potential of tailoring a low thermal expansion coefficient substrate material through suitable materials selection, geometrical design, and fiber hybridization is also discussed.
