In two previous papers [1, 2] we investigated the zeros of certain arithmetic functions. Using units of cubic fields, we also succeeded to construct, almost by accident, and as a by-product so to speak, entirely new and comparatively complicated combinatorial identities. In an interesting paper combinatorialist L. Carlitz [10] proved those identities in an elementary way. In a/m, we had to prove that the units used were fundamental ones.
Encouraged by these results, we took a closer look at this method that had led to the construction of combinatorial identities. Since the latter are such an important tool in mathematics, we thought it would be “einer Messe wert“ to generalize these results and lay the theoretical foundations of a new method for the construction of highly sophisticated combinatorial identities.

Dirichlet was the first to give an ingenious proof of the exact (finite) number of elements in the basis of the multiplicative group of units in any algebraic number field of arbitrary degree n. These elements are called fundamental units. If the field is real and its generating number is a real root of a polynomial over Q of degree n﹜ having r1 real and r2 pairs of conjugate complex roots, so that r1 + 2r2 = n, then Dirichlet's famous result states that the exact number of fundamental units in Q(w) equals r1 + r2 — 1.

A previous result of the author concerning the parametric representation of infinitely many solutions of the title equation is strongly improved. New classes each containing infinitely many solutions of the equation for specified values of d are stated explicitly. The method of solution hinges heavily on solving the generalized Pell’s equation x2—Dy2=c.

This paper shows the existence of a one-to-one correspondence between a certain class of square matrices of arbitrary order and a related extension field. The elements of these matrices are obtained from certain basic linear recursive sequences by means of a generalization of the euclidean algorithm.

Let Pm, k denote the set of pyramidal numbers
1.1
The question has been asked whether there exist elements p, q, r in Pm, k such that p+q = r or, as the problem is usually posed,
1.2
The case k=2 has been studied by Sierpinski [6] and Khatri [3]; the case k=3 by Oppenheim [4] and Segal [5]; recently Fraenkel [2] has generalized (1.1) to the larger set

In the first part of this paper I shall demonstrate that one irrational root of the algebraic equation
creates an algebraic number field, out of which n — 1 irrationals can be chosen so that they yield a periodic Jacobi-Perron algorithm. The coefficients in (1) are subject to certain restrictions which will be elaborated below.

Among the projects for a new social organisation which were published during the French revolution a special place must be allotted to the scheme submitted in the work De la propriété ou la cause du pauvre, plaidée au Tribunal de la Raison, de la Justice et de la Vérité (Property, or the case of the poor man, presented before the Tribunal of Reason, Justice and Truth). This work, which appeared anonymously in 1791, was attributed by A. Aulard and by the catalogue of the National Library to the Abbé de Cournand, professor of literature at the Collège de France from 1784–1814, and best known during the revolution for his courageous advocacy of the marriage of priests.
