The consequences for the COVID-19 pandemic in the newborns of affected mothers remains unknown. Previous clinical experiences with other infections during pregnancy lead to considered pregnant women and their offspring especially vulnerable for SARS-COV-2. That is, the underlying physiopathological changes caused by the infection (e.g. storm of cytokines, micro-coagulation in placenta or vertical transmission) could clearly compromise fetal neurodevelopment.

To analyze the impact of maternal SARS-COV-2 infection during pregnancy in early neurodevelopment of infants gestated during the COVID-19 pandemic period compared to those gestated immediately prior (2017-2021).

212 pregnant women (14% infected) were followed throughout their pregnancy and postpartum, including newborn development. SARS-COV-2 infection was serologically confirmed during pregnancy. The Brazelton Neonatal Assessment Scale (NBAS) was administered at 6 weeks old by a trained neonatologist to evaluate neurological, social and behavioral aspects of newborn’s functioning. Differences in NBAS scores between cases and controls were tested by ANOVAs. All the analysis were adjusted for maternal age, sociodemographic status, anxious-depressive symptomatology, infant’s sex and gestational age at birth and NBAS, and for the period of gestation (previous or during COVID-19 pandemic).

NBAS social interactive dimension was significantly decreased in those infants exposed to prenatal SARS-COV-2 (F=4.248, p=.043), particularly when the infection occurred before the week 20 of gestation. Gestation during COVID-19 pandemic did not alter NBAS subscales.

SARS-COV-2 infection during pregnancy seems to be associated with lower NBAS scores on social dimension in 6 weeks old exposed newborns.

Bipolar disorder is related with functional impairment in euthymia. The contribution of biological functions such as sleep, sexual functioning; or the presence of obesity on this loss remain understudied.

The aim of this work was to study the influence of biological determinants in context with clinical and demographical determinants of functioning in a 3-year cohort of euthymic BD patients.

In this multicentric study 67 euthymic adult bipolar outpatients were followed during three years. Functioning was assessed with FAST, insomnia severity with Oviedo Sleep Questionnaire (OSQ) and, sexual functioning with Changes on Sexual Functioning Questionnaire (CSFQ-14) and obesity was expressed as body mass index (BMI). The basal effect of sleep, sexual functioning and obesity (Time 0) on FAST (Time 3) was analyzed with a mixed ordinal regression model including time effect, age, sex, number of manic and depressive episodes, euthymia length, and comorbidity with personality disorder. Change in functioning (Time 3 to 0) was analyzed in another mixed model also considering the difference in biological determinants (Time 3 to 0) and the presence of mood episodes during the period.

A basal worse sexual functioning, a higher severity of insomnia and a higher BMI predicted a worse functioning at three years (p=0.005, p=0.043, p=0.05 respectively). Regarding FAST difference from Time0 to 3, only having a manic episode related to an impairment on functioning (p=0.027).

Sexual functioning, quality of sleep and BMI are predictors of functioning in euthymia in BD. Manic episodes in the following contribute to impairments on functioning more than depressive episodes.

Sleep and circadian disturbances have been widely studied in patients with bipolar disorder (BD) (Duarte Faria et al., 2015; Gonzalez, 2014). However, there is no clear evidence about the role of peripheral biomarkers of circadian cycle in this population.

This systematic review aims to identify potential endocrine biomarkers of circadian rhythm in blood and study their relationship with sleep problems in BD.

An electronic search of Pubmed and PsycoInfo databases were performed. It includes articles about the topic from 1991 to 2021. The search strategy was: (“Peripheral biomarkers” OR “biological markers” OR biomarker OR cortisol OR melatonin OR orexin OR hypocretin) AND (blood OR serum OR plasma) AND (“sleep-wake” OR “circadian rhythm” OR sleep OR insomnia) AND “bipolar”.

92 records were obtained after excluding duplicates. Only five studies met the inclusion criteria (n = 499; BD = 125; unipolar depression = 148; schizophrenia = 80; controls = 146). The endocrine parameters analyzed were: cortisol (3 studies), melatonin (1 study) and orexin-A (1 study). Overall, no significant associations between these biomarkers and sleep disturbances, assessed with subjective (psychometric evaluation) and/or objective (polysomnography) measures, were detected.

This systematic review highlights the lack of studies that explores the role of endocrine biomarkers related to circadian function in the pathophysiology of sleep disturbances in BD.

Maternal stress during pregnancy influences fetal neurodevelopment, especially by the dysregulation of the HPA axis. However, less is known about whether maltreatment or stressful life experiences previous to pregnancy influence on developmental outcomes in the offspring.

To analyze newborns’ neurobehavioral profiles in a cohort of healthy pregnant women, according to 1) childhood and recent maternal adverse experiences and 2) mother-infant attachment.

150 women were followed during the three trimesters of pregnancy. CTQ and AAT tests were employed to evaluate childhood and recent experiences of maltreatment, while infant and recent adverse experiences were evaluated using ETI-SR and SRSS, respectively. Newborns neurobehavioral profiles were defined at 8 weeks using the Neonatal Behavioral Assessment Scale (NBAS) and their temperament was assessed with IBQ. PBQ and PAI scales were employed to assess mother-infant attachment. A linear regression model was performed, adjusting for possible confounders.

Maternal childhood sexual abuse seems to be associated with greater difficulties in the newborns control of reactivity to external stimuli (β=0,517; p-value=0.001), while recent maternal stressful experiences are related to difficulties for states regulation (β=0,29; p-value=0,038). Regarding attachment, maltreated mothers tend to show ambivalent and avoidant styles. Interestingly, postnatal mother-infant attachment seems to modulate autonomous, motor and social-interactive abilities in the offspring (β=-0,227; p-value=0,033 // β=-0,329; p-value=0,006).

Newborns from mothers exposed to maltreatment and negative life events previous to pregnancy show difficulties to organize and regulate the reactions to psychosocial stimuli. Future studies must disentangle whether maternal attachment style is a modulator of this association.

Bipolar disorder (BD) is a chronic deteriorating illness which has a strong impact on functionality. In the past few years, orexins have gained importance as possible biomarkers of circadian rhythms, affected in BD. Up to this date, we have not found any bibliographical review evaluating the association of orexins and BD.

To review published literature in relation to the associaton of orexins and BD.

A bibliographical search was conducted in PubMed. Inclusion criteria were a) the study evaluated orexins in plasma or cerebrospinal fluid, and b) patients with BD were included within the subjects of study.

Reference lists of the articles that met inclusion criteria were also examined.

Ten articles were retrieved from the initial search. Only three met inclusion criteria and another one was selected from the reference list examination. One study observed significantly higher levels of orexin A in plasma of BD patients versus depression and controls. Other found higher concentration of orexin A of unipolar and bipolar depression versus controls, but this result was not statistically significant. Another one did not find differences in orexin A concentration between mania, depression and controls. The remaining study detected significantly lower concentration of orexin A in BD versus depression, schizophrenia and controls.

Despite being heterogenous, the results point out there are differences in orexin levels in BD when compared to other diagnostic groups or controls. This sets a starting point to focus research on this subject and continue analyzing the role of orexins as biomarkers in BD.

Cortisol, the hormonal endpoint of Hypothalamic Pituitary Adrenal (HPA) axis, coordinates the body response in front of daily stressful situations. Disturbances in cortisol circadian rhythm have been implicated in the pathophysiology of depression and neurodevelopment lasting consequences. Although pregnancy entails a progressively increase in cortisol levels, the consequences of subclinical depression traits during pregnancy in cortisol circadian rhythm remains unclear.

To analyze the impact of prenatal subclinical depressive symptomatology in cortisol circadian rhythm through pregnancy and its relevance for postpartum depression risk.

A cohort of 112 healthy pregnant women (Mean age±SD=32.32±4.37) of the general population was followed throughout their first pregnancy and first two months of postpartum period. Diurnal salivary cortisol curve (four measures) was obtained for every trimester; the Area Under the Curve with respect to the ground (AUCg) and with respect to the increase (AUCi) were used as measures of basal HPA axis functioning. Depressive symptomatology was assessed every pregnancy trimester and postpartum period following EPDS criteria. All the analyses were adjusted for maternal age, weight, ethnicity and socioeconomic status and sample collection’s time.

Prenatal subclinical depressive symptomatology (EPDS>10) was associated with a blunted cortisol rhythm during first trimester (F= 3.913,p=.011) but not during second (F=2.629, p=056) or third trimesters (F=.411,p=.724). Furthermore, a logistic regression model showed a positive association between Prenatal subclinical depressive symptomatology and the risk of postpartum depression (χ2=13.8, p<.001,OR=9.6; 95%CI 2.5–35.5).

Women with subclinical depressive symptomatology in early pregnancy had alterations in cortisol circadian rhythmicity and a higher risk of postpartum depression.

Schizophrenia is one of the most disabling diseases affecting the patient’s ability to live independently, to be socially active and to work or study1,2. Therefore, identifying predictors of functioning in the first stages of the disease is important to prevent a negative progression of functional outcome in these patients3.

To identify the factors associated with real-world functioning in patients with recent onset of the disease.

Secondary analysis of a cross-sectional, naturalistic study. 84 patients with Schizophrenia (F20), aged 18-71 in their first five years of the disorder under maintenance treatment. Assessments: PANSS, CDS, CGI-S, CAINS; functioning: PSP, cognition: MATRICS. Statistical analysis: student-t test, ANOVA, Pearson correlation and lineal regression.

Mean age (SD): 31.30 (10.08); men: 62.8%. Statistical significant differences (p<0.05) were found in work status, benzodiazepines and antidepressants use. Furthermore, significant correlations (p<0.05) were found with depressive, positive and negative symptoms (avolition, anhedonia, alogia and affective flattening) and cognition. A significant predictive model was obtained that explains the 72.1% of the variance [F(5,74)= 20.952; p< 0.001]. This model included depressive symptoms (B= -0.940; p= 0.001), negative symptoms (B= -1.696; p< 0.001), avolition and anhedonia (B= -0.643; p= 0.001), affective flattening and alogia (B= 1.197; p= 0.003), and visual learning (B= 0.202 p= 0.039).

Negative and depressive symptoms are the main determinants of real-world functioning in patients with recent onset of schizophrenia. Visual learning also contributes to this outcome. On the other hand, the positive relationship between expressive domain and functioning needs furthermore investigation.

Worse sleep quality and increased inflammatory markers in women with schizophrenia (Sch) have been reported (Lee et al. 2019). However, the physiological mechanisms underlying the interplay between sleep and the inflammatory pathways are not yet well understood (Fang et al. 2016).

Analyze the relationship between Neutrophil/Lymphocyte (NLR), Monocyte/Lymphocyte (MLR) and Platelet/Lymphocyte (PLR) ratios, and insomnia in Sch stratified by sex.

Final sample included 176 Sch patients (ICD-10 criteria) [mean age: 38.9±13.39; males: 111(63.1%)]. Assessment: PANSS, Calgary Depression Scale (CDSS), and Oviedo Sleep Questionnaire (OSQ) to identify a comorbid diagnosis of insomnia based on ICD-10. Fasting counting blood cell were performed to calculate ratios. Statistics: U Mann-Whitney, logistic regression.

Insomnia as comorbid diagnosis was present in 22 Sch (12.5%) with no differences between sex [14 males (12.6%), 8 females (12.3%)], neither in their age. Female patients with insomnia showed increased NLR [2.44±0.69 vs. 1.88±0.80, U=122.00 (p=0.034)]. However, no differences in PLR and MLR were found, neither in any ratio in males. Regression models using insomnia as dependent variable and covariates (age, PANSS-positive, PANSS-negative, CDSS) were estimated. Females: presence of insomnia was associated with NLR [OR=3.564 (p=0.032)], PANSS-positive [OR=1.263 (p=0.013)] and CDSS [OR=1.198 (p=0.092)]. Males: only PANSS-positive [OR=1.123 (p=0.027)] and CDSS scores [OR=1.220 (p=0.005)] were associated with insomnia.

NLR represent an inflammatory marker of insomnia in Sch but only in female patients. Improving sleep quality in these patients could help to decrease their inflammatory response.

Depressed patients with early traumatic experiences may represent a clinically distinct subtype with worse clinical outcome. Since early traumatic experiences alter the development of systems that regulate the stress response, certain personality features may influence coping strategies, putting individuals with depression and a history of early traumatic experiences at greater risk of suicidal behaviour.

To determine whether impulsivity mediates the relationship between early traumatic experiences and suicidal behaviour in patients with major depressive disorder (MDD).

The sample included 190 patients [mean age (SD)=53.71 (10.37); females: 66.3%], with current MDD. The Childhood Trauma Questionnaire-Short Form (CTQ-SF), the List of Threatening Experiences (LTE), and the Barratt Impulsiveness Scale-11 (BIS-11) were used to assess childhood and adulthood adverse life events and impulsivity. We developed mediation models by bootstrap sampling methods.

81 (42.6%) patients had previous suicide attempts (SA). CTQ-SF-Total and BIS-11-Total scores were higher in MDD patients with previous SA. Correlation analyses revealed significant correlations between the CTQ-SF-Total and BIS-11-Total, CTQ-SF-Total and HDRS-Total, and BIS-11-Total and HDRS-Total scores. Regression models found that CTQ-SF-Total, BIS-11-Total, and HDRS-Total scores were associated with SA. Mediation analyses further revealed the association between CTQ-SF-Total and SA was mediated by the indirect effect of the BIS-11-Total score (b=0.007, 95% CI=0.001, 0.015), after controlling for sex, HDRS-Total, and LTE-Total.

Impulsivity could mediate the influence of childhood trauma on suicidal behaviour. This will help understand the role of risk factors in suicidal behaviour and aid in the development of prevention interventions focused on modifiable mediators when risk factors are non-modifiable.

Orexins are involved in the regulation of circadian rhythms which play an important role in mood regulation(1,2), and are hypothesised to be associated with major depressive disorder(3). However, scarce studies analyse their relationship with bipolar disorder (BD).

To evaluate the relationship of orexin-A and the clinical course of BD

95 BD patients were tested for serum orexin-A. The clinical course was analysed through number of depressive, manic/mixed episodes. HDRS and YMRS were used to assess severity of current episode. Statistics: Spearman correlations, U Mann-Whitney, linear regression analysis.

Mean age was 50.03 (SD=12.87) and 64.2% were women. 63.2% had BD-type I. Mean number of manic, depressive and mixed episodes was 2.32 (SD=3.07), 7.28 (SD=12.37), and 3.01 (SD=9.06), respectively. Mean age of onset was 26.09 (SD=10.50). Mean concentration of orexin-A was 21.78 pg/ml (SD=15.41), with no differences in sex, body mass index, age at onset or presence of insomnia(ICD-10). A correlation with age was observed; r=0.24 (p=0.019). No association was identified between orexin-A and severity of current episode. In relation to clinical course, no correlation was found with manic or mixed episodes. However, a negative correlation was identified between orexin-A levels and number of depressive episodes; r=-0.36 (p=0.001). When linear regression (orexin-A as dependent variable) was used to control for age, only this covariate (B=0.304) entered in the model (R2=0.067, F=6.045, p=0.015).

No relationship between orexin-A and number of manic/mixed episodes were detected. The association of orexin-A with number of depressive episodes dissappeared when age was controlled.

Suicidal behavior has a great impact on world public health. The literature describes the possible existence of an association between neurobiological, clinical and cognitive factors in suicidal behavior.

To determine the possible relationship between clinical variables (history of abuse/maltreatment in childhood), psychopathology (impulsivity traits) and cognitive (decision-making) with a history of suicide attempt and/or current suicidal idea in patients with major depressive disorder.

Cross-sectional study in a sample of adult patients with major depressive disorder in which two types of comparisons are made. In the first case, two groups were compared based on the presence or absence of history of suicide attempt. In the second case, two groups were compared based on the presence or absence of suicidal ideation in the same sample of patients. Finally, sociodemographic, clinical and cognitive variables were evaluated in that population sample.

When the joint influence of sociodemographic, clinical and cognitive characteristics are present, it can be said that being single/divorced/separated, a history of sexual abuse in childhood and an alteration in decision-making, specifically a lower number of choices of deck D in the IGT test, are associated with a higher probability of a personal history of suicide attempt. While a higher score on the Barrat impulsivity scale is associated with a greater probability of presenting current suicidal ideation once the influence of sociodemographic, clinical and cognitive variables has been taken into account.

Different sociodemographic, clinical and cognitive factors are associated with the presence of a history of suicide attempt and/or current suicidal ideation.

COVID-19 pandemic and lockdown have provoked a considerable psychological impact in Spain. Some studies have reported greater psychological impact in the younger population. To date, no previous study has focused on depressive disorder (DD) patients based on their age.

To describe the psychological impact on DD according to age.

Cross-sectional study of an online survey available from 19 to 26 March 2020. Out of a total of 21207 respondents, 608 (2.9%) reported suffering from DD (mean age ±SD = 41.2 years±14.07 [18-82], 80.6% women). The subsample (608) was divided according to age, “youngsters” <45 (57.4%)/ “elders” ≥45. DASS-21 and IES scales were employed. Statistical analyses: Chi-square, t-Student test.

Both groups did not differ (p>0.05) in sex, having COVID-19 symptoms, having family/friends infected, or income changes. While youngsters were single more frequently (68.8% vs 14.3%, χ² = 179.7, p<0.001), elders had somatic illness more frequently (64.8% vs 39.7% χ² =30.401, p<0.001). Youngsters obtained higher scores in depression (4.69 vs 4.1, T=5.413, p<0.001), anxiety (2.86 vs 1.97, T=5.249, p<0.001) and stress (4.48 vs 3.17, T=6.355, p<0.001) DASS-21 subscales, as in intrusive (3.42 vs 3.05, T=1.984, p=0.048) and avoidant (4.64 vs 4.11, T=3.056, p=0.002) IES scores.

Despite the group of elders with depression being more vulnerable to severe COVID-19 disease and presenting more frequently somatic comorbidities, younger depressive patients suffered more from depressive, anxiety, stress and avoidant symptoms and intrusive thoughts, in line with previous reports in the general population.

Two studies to date have been published regarding the prevalence of the metabolic syndrome in bipolar patients. The unadjusted prevalence rates reported were 30% and 32%. The aim of this study was to evaluate the prevalence of the metabolic syndrome in a group of 142 bipolar patients from Spain.

Bipolar patients (ICD-10 criteria) from 11 centres in Spain were assessed cross-sectionally for metabolic syndrome according to the NCEP ATP III criteria.

The mean age was 47.3 (SD 14.5), 51.1% were male. On average, patients were receiving 2.8 (SD 1.3) drugs for the treatment of their bipolar disorder. Ninety-one percent were receiving mood stabilizers, 63.4% antipsychotics and 29.6 antidepressants. Eighty-seven percent of the antipsychotics prescribed were atypicals. The overall prevalence of metabolic syndrome in our sample was 24.6% Fifty-seven percent of the sample met the criterion for abdominal obesity, 37.4% for met the criterion for hypertriglyceridemia, 36.4% for low HDL-cholesterol, 25.2% for high blood pressure and 12.5% for high fasting glucose. No statistically significant difference was found between with and without the metabolic syndrome for gender, illness status (acute versus in remission), CGI-S-BP scores and number of medications used. Patients taking tow mood stabilizers had significantly higher metabolic syndrome rates than patients taking one mood stabilizer and than patients without mood stabilizer treatment (40% versus 17.8% and 11.1% respectively, p .02).

The prevalence of the metabolic syndrome in bipolar patients is high. It appears to be higher than that estimated for the Spanish general population.

To identify differences in personality traits (temperament and character) using Cloninger's typology according to the presence of physical illness (WONCA criteria).

404 subjects, without psychiatric pathology, from Asturias (Northern Spain) were included in the study [50% men; mean age (SD)= 40.5 (11.3)]. Assessments were made using an ad hoc interview (socio-demographic and clinical data), and the Spanish versions of the MINI International Neuropsychiatric Interview (DSM-IV criteria) (Sheehan et al., 1997), and the Temperament and Character Inventory (TCI) (Cloninger et al., 1994).

154 (38.1%) subjects have at least one diagnosis of physical illness. Subjects with physical illness scored significantly higher in: i) temperament scales: harm avoindance (HA) (17.02 vs 15.76, t= -1.968; p= 0.050); fatigability and asthenia (HA4) (3.56 vs 2.82, t= -3.652; p< 0.000), ii) character scales: transpersonal (ST2) (3.91 vs 3.26, t= -2.900; p= 0.004). However, they scored significantly lower in: i) temperament scales: attachment (RD3) (5.18 vs 5.70, t= 2.346; p= 0.019), ii) character scales: responsibility (SD1) (5.57 vs 5.96, t= 1.984; p=0.048); purposeful (SD2) (5.43 vs 5.84, t= 2.092; p= 0.037); cooperativeness (C) (31.52 vs 33.26, t= 3.166; p< 0.000); social acceptance (C1) (6.50 vs 6.89, t= 2.536; p= 0.012); empathy (C2) (4.81 vs 5.18, t= 2.484; p= 0.013); compassion (C4) (7.44 vs 7.94, t= 2.190; p= 0.019); pure-hearted (C5) (6.55 vs 7.06, t= 3.225; p= 0.001). No other significant differences were found between the groups.

Our data suggest that physical illness might influence personality traits in non-psychiatric population.

Hooliganism has become recognised by governments and the media as a serious problem since the 1960s. Scientists have been offering explanations of football hooliganism mainly from a psychosocial approach.

The primary objective of this study was to collect measurable data of violence risk in football hooligans.

We used the Plutchik and van Praag's Past Feelings and Acts of Violence (PFAV) Scale to measure the risk of violent acts in three samples: hooligans from a professional football team, standard football supporters, and a control sample.

We found an increased risk of violent behaviour in all the individuals from the hooligan sample, but not in the standard supporters' sample.

Football hooligans have extremely high risk of committing violent acts. Standard football supporters are not more violent than general population.

Healthy sexual functioning is an important part of the human experience, but there is a lack of studies regarding sexuality and sexual behavior in schizophrenia and bipolar disorder (García-Portilla, 2010).

To determine the differences on the sexual dysfunction profile between patients with schizophrenia and bipolar disorder.

Naturalistic, cross-sectional, multicentre, validation study. A total of 89 patients with schizophrenia (SQF) and 82 with bipolar disorder (BPD) were evaluated using the Changes in Sexual Functioning Questionnaire Short-Form (CSFQ-14).

Sample description (SQF vs BPD): Mean age (SD) were 39.2 (11.0) vs 46.7 (10.9) (p < 0.001), men were 58.8% vs 41.2% (χ2 = 4.0, df. = 1, p < 0.05), 61.8% vs 38.2% were single (χ2 = 12.8, df. = 1, p < 0.001). Mean (SD) scores on CSFQ-14 scales were (SQF vs BPD): Pleasure 2.2 (1.0) vs 2.6 (1.0) (t = -2.2, p < 0.05), Sexual desire/frequency 5.3 (2.0) vs 5.9 (2.0) (t = -2.0, p < 0.05), Sexual desire/interest 5.7 (2.6) vs 6.9 (3.0) (t = -2.5, p < 0.05), Arousal/excitement 8.6 (3.1) vs 8.9 (3.4), Orgasm/completion 7.9 (3.2) vs 8.8 (3.2), Desire 11.1 (3.9) vs 12.9 (4.4) (t = -2.7, p < 0.05), Arousal 8.6 (3.1) vs 8.9 (3.4), Orgasm 7.9 (3.2) vs 8.8 (3.2) and Total 39.5 (9.7) vs 42.2 (11.0).

Patients with schizophrenia have more difficulty to get pleasure and more problems in the phase of desire (frequency and interest) than the patients with bipolar disorder.

1. i. To establish the sociodemographic profile of the subjects who attempted suicide in the Health Area IV of Asturias (Northern Spain);

2. ii. To determinate the mental disorders more frequently associated with suicide attempts (SA);

3. iii. To study the relationship between repetition of suicidal behaviour and severity of the SA;

4. iv. To determinate the more commonly used methods for SA.

1,633 suicide attempters who attended the Emergency Room of the University Central Hospital of Asturias during the period 2003-2005 were included in the study. Evaluation of these patients was made using the WHO/Euro Multicentre Study Protocol. Psychiatric diagnoses were made following ICD-10 criteria.

Sociodemographic data: mean age (SD) = 38.66 (15.13); females: 62%; single: 39.8%; living with their family: 83.8%; lowest educational level: 67%; economically inactive: 33.8%. More prevalent psychiatric diagnoses were affective disorders (24.1%) and anxiety disorders (21.6%). Previous SA were present in 49.2% and 40% repeat the attempt during the monitoring period. Severity of the attempt (lethality of method and intentionality) was related with repetition of the behaviour during the monitoring period (p = 0.001). More frequent methods were overdose (74.8%) followed by cutting (18.5%).

SA was more prevalent in a single woman with age between 30 and 50 years who suffering for affective or anxiety disorders. Many of the patients repeat the suicidal behaviour and this was related to the severity of the attempt. Individuals appear to use the methods that are available to them to attempt suicide.

To date, little is known about the impact of substance use on physical health of patients with bipolar disorder. This study provides data on the impact of tobacco, alcohol and cannabis upon weight, metabolic profile and cardiovascular risk in these patients.

Naturalistic, cross-sectional, multicenter study conducted in Spain. Current use of tobacco, alcohol and cannabis was registered based on patient’ self-reports. Patients were evaluated for presence of metabolic syndrome (MetS) according to modified NCEP ATP III criteria, for cardiovascular risk using the Framinghan function (CHD) and the Systematic COronary Risk Evaluation (SCORE) function (CMR).

The mean age was 46.6 years and 49% were male. Fitty-one percent used tobacco, 13% alcohol and 12.5% cannabis. Mean body mass index (BMI) was 27.9 kg/m2, 22.4% had MetS and ten-year CHD and CMR risks were 7.6% and 1.8% respectively. Patients who used tobacco had significantly higher CHD risk (8.82 versus 5.74, p < 0.01), and used more antipsychotic (1.23 versus 1.04, p 0.002) and overall (3.18 versus 2.71, p 0.01) drugs for the treatment of their bipolar disorder. Patients who used cannabis had significantly lower BMI (26.0 versus 28.2, p < 0.05) and lower CMR (0.37 versus 1.99, p < 0.001), however, when controlling by age, severity of mania and presence of metabolic syndrome these associations disappear.

Substance use, mainly tobacco, is high in patients with bipolar disorder. Use of tobacco is associated with higher cardiovascular risk and greater number of antipsychotic and overall drugs for the bipolar disorder.

attitudes towards suicide among health science students will influence their future encounter with suicidal patients. The aim of the present study is to describe the attitudes towards suicidal behaviours among medical and nursing students from the University of Oviedo, and to identify the parameters (demographic, personal experiences and believes) that influence such attitudes.

medical (3° and 5° year) and nursing (1° y 2° year) students at the University of Oviedo who attended to class a regular day were asked to participate in the survey. Those who participated filled in the Attitudes Towards Suicide Questionnaire.

a total of 162 students were included in this study. The mean age was 21 years (SD 2.4); 84% were women; 63% had religious believes; 15.6% had had at least once suicidal thoughts or ideas. An empathetic and optimistic view towards suicidal patients appeared to be mostly prevalent among health science students. Age, type of studies, previous information about suicide and history of previous suicidal thoughts influence some of these attitudes.

older, medical students and those who have received specific information about suicidal behaviours have attitudes more determined by a medical perspective. Previous history of suicidal ideation is associated with a more pessimistic view of these behaviours.
