A Peculiar Morphology of Gibbsite and Nordstrandite Co-Crystallized in the Presence of Tartrate in a Strongly Alkaline Environment

The nature and morphology of Al(OH)3 polymorphs obtained by precipitating Al and tartrate at pH 12.0 and at a tartrate/Al molar ratio (R) of 0.1 were studied by X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy and electron diffraction. Co-crystallization of unusually long (up to 18 µm) ‘stick-shaped’ gibbsite with platy particles of both nordstrandite, mainly, and bayerite was observed. Face-to-face associations of plates nucleated perpendicularly on the gibbsite surfaces parallel to the c axis produced peculiar elongated ‘brush’ -shaped particles. In a strongly alkaline environment the inhibiting effect of tartrate on Al(OH)3 polymorph formation is reduced and production of co-crystallized phases with structural crystallographic similarities can be observed.
Incorporating preauthorization into antimicrobial stewardship pharmacist workflow reduces Clostridioides difficile and gastrointestinal panel testing

Objective:
To evaluate whether incorporating mandatory prior authorization for Clostridioides difficile testing into antimicrobial stewardship pharmacist workflow could reduce testing in patients with alternative etiologies for diarrhea.
Design:Single center, quasi-experimental before-and-after study.
Setting:Tertiary-care, academic medical center in Ann Arbor, Michigan.
Patients:Adult and pediatric patients admitted between September 11, 2019 and December 10, 2019 were included if they had an order placed for 1 of the following: (1) C. difficile enzyme immunoassay (EIA) in patients hospitalized >72 hours and received laxatives, oral contrast, or initiated tube feeds within the prior 48 hours, (2) repeat molecular multiplex gastrointestinal pathogen panel (GIPAN) testing, or (3) GIPAN testing in patients hospitalized >72 hours.
Intervention:A best-practice alert prompting prior authorization by the antimicrobial stewardship program (ASP) for EIA or GIPAN testing was implemented. Approval required the provider to page the ASP pharmacist and discuss rationale for testing. The provider could not proceed with the order if ASP approval was not obtained.
Results:An average of 2.5 requests per day were received over the 3-month intervention period. The weekly rate of EIA and GIPAN orders per 1,000 patient days decreased significantly from 6.05 ± 0.94 to 4.87 ± 0.78 (IRR, 0.72; 95% CI, 0.56–0.93; P = .010) and from 1.72 ± 0.37 to 0.89 ± 0.29 (IRR, 0.53; 95% CI, 0.37–0.77; P = .001), respectively.
Conclusions:We identified an efficient, effective C. difficile and GIPAN diagnostic stewardship approval model.

An analysis of the biological mechanisms underlying both aggression and major depression (MD) shows the implication of common features. There is a well known link between MD and hyperactivity of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis. Moreover, the HPA axis dysfunction has been identified as a promising predictor of suicidal behaviours in mood disorders.
The aim of the study was to examine the relationship between aggressive behaviour and plasma cortisol levels during a Major Depression Episode (MDE).
83 patients (M/F = 43/40; mean age 47,70±14,52) with a Mood Disorder during a MDE have been recruited at the Day Clinic of Psychiatry of the Catholic University in Rome.
A blood sample for the determination of plasma cortisol levels was collected before antidepressant treatment. Aggression Questionnaire (AQ) was used to evaluate aggression traits such as Verbal Aggression (VA), Physical Aggression (PA), Anger (A), Hostility (H) and total Aggression score (AQtot). No significant correlation between plasma cortisol levels and VA, A, H or AQtot was found. A positive correlation between PA scores and plasma cortisol levels was reported (r = 0.39; p = 0.007).
Physical Aggression underline a risk for subsequent inner-directed violence, including suicidal thoughts and behaviours and it is also associated to a serotoninergic system dysfunction. An abnormal interaction between the HPA mechanisms and serotonergic systems has also been suggested in suicidal behaviours.
Our results confirm the importance of further research with more sensitive markers to monitor HPA axis activity (e.g. Dexamethasone/CRH test), serotonergic activity and psychopathological features in depressed patients.
Nature of mixed iron and aluminium gels as affected by Fe/Al molar ratio, pH and citrate

The nature and mineralogy of mixed Al and Fe(III) gels (initial Fe/Al molar ratios (Ri) of 1.0 and 2.5) formed at pH values ranging from 4.0 to 10.0, both in the presence and absence of citric acid (citrate/Fe + AI molar ratio (Rcit) of 0.01 and 0.1) and aged for a long period at room temperature and at 50°C have been studied. The complexes showed considerable differences in the mineralogy of the precipitation products. The samples formed at Ri = 1.0 contained ferrihydrite at pH 4.0, ferrihydrite + gibbsite at pH 5.0-7.0, and hematite + Al(OH)3 polymorphs + ferrihydrite at pH 9.0-10.0. The samples formed at Ri = 2.5 had greater quantities of poorly crystallized ferrihydrite. Large amounts of Fe+Al (25-82%) were solubilized from the samples aged for 60 days at 50°C by ammonium oxalate. The addition of increasing concentrations of citrate to the gel suspensions containing equimolar amounts of Fe and AI strongly inhibited the formation of Al(OH)3 polymorphs both at pH 5.0 or 8.5 by promoting the formation of short-range ordered materials. Citrate added initially to Fe-Al solutions (R*cit = 0.1) completely inhibited formation of crystals even after 135 days at 50°C.

The nature and composition of the Fe minerals in the rusty ferruginous material frequently located in the zone of contact between the thallus of Stereocaulon vesuvianum and the leucite bearing rock of Mt. Vesuvius have been studied by microscopic and submicroscopic investigations (SEM, TEM with EDXRA) complemented by X-ray diffraction and chemical analysis. Ferrihydrite is likely to be the main component of the short-range order iron oxyhydroxide pool, although the possibility that significant feroxyhite may be present cannot be completely excluded. Hematite and goethite are the crystalline iron oxides. The organic acids produced by lichens play a key role in the enrichment of poorly-ordered phases at the rock-lichen interface. It is suggested that the peculiar morphology of the Stereocaulon vesuvianum thallus and the irregularity of the volcanic rock surface lead to different microsites in the rock-lichen interfaces which have their own conditions of pH, humidity and redox potential, favourable for the neoformation of crystalline phases.
The super star cluster driven feedback in ESO338-IG04 and Haro 11

The stellar content of young massive star clusters emit large amounts of Lyman continuum photons and inject momentum into the inter stellar medium (ISM) by the strong stellar winds of the most massive stars in the cluster. When the most massive stars explode as supernovae, large amounts of mechanical energy are injected in the ISM. A detailed study of the ISM around these massive cluster provides insights on the effect of cluster feedback.
We present high quality integral field spectroscopy taken with VLT/MUSE of two starburst galaxies: ESO 338-IG04 and Haro 11. Both galaxies contain a significant number of super star clusters. The MUSE data provide us with an unprecedented view of the state and kinematics of the ionized gas in the galaxy allowing us to study the effect of stellar feedback on small and large spatial scales. We present our recent results on studying the ISM state of these two galaxies. The data of both galaxies show that the mechanical and ionization feedback of the super star clusters in the galaxy modify the state and kinematics of the ISM substancially by creating highly ionized bubbles around the cluster, making the central part of the galaxy highly ionized. This shows that the HII regions around the individual clusters are density bounded, allowing the ionizing photons to escape and ionize the ISM further out.

A series of laser pump, x-ray probe experiments show that above band gap photoexcitation can generate a large out-of-plane strain in multiferroic BiFeO3 thin films. The strain decays in a time scale that is the same as the photo-induced carriers measured in an optical transient absorption spectroscopy experiment. We attribute the strain to the piezoelectric effect due to screening of the depolarization field by laser induced carriers. A strong film thickness dependence of strain and carrier relaxation is also observed, revealing the role of the carrier transport in determining the structural and carrier dynamics in complex oxide thin films.

Infection and immunity for human parvovirus B19 in patients with febrile exanthema

The contribution of parvovirus B19 (B19V) as a causative agent of febrile exanthema (FE) in Cordoba, Argentina, was analysed by detection of viral DNA, and specific IgM and IgG. Serum from 141 patients with FE who were negative for measles and rubella, collected during 2005–2009, plus serum from 31 healthy individuals, were assayed. B19V was the aetiological agent in 14·9% of all FE cases, and in 39·1% in an epidemic year (2007). B19V DNA was detected in 47·6% of IgM-positive FE patients, 30·2% of IgM-negative/IgG-positive FE patients, and 9·7% of healthy controls, indicating B19V long-term infection in ~10% of immunocompetent individuals. Persistent B19V DNA was significantly more frequent in children than adults and in males than females. All patients with acute B19V infection had rash and fever, 85·7% had adenopathy, and only 14·3% had arthropathy. This is the first follow-up study of markers of infection and immunity for B19V infection in Argentina.

The weathering phenomena resulting from the growth of six foliose and crustose lichens (Parmelia subrudecta, Xanthoria ectaneoides, Parmelia conspersa, Aspicilia radiosa, Caloplaca sp. and Ochrolechia parella) on three mafic rocks have been studied. The bioweathering results in more or less extensive fragmentation and corrosion of the mineral surfaces immediately beneath the lichen thalli and in the formation, in the thallus or at the rock-lichen interface, of secondary products. The significant amounts of whewellite found in all interfaces, and the bipiramids of weddellite detected at the serpentine rock-Ochrolechia parella interface, suggest that the oxalic acid secreted by the mycobiont is the chemical substance principally involved. The capacity of the lichens to alter their rock substrata does not appear to be related to their thallus morphology.
