Objectives: Loneliness is a modifiable risk factor for depression and dementia in older age. Validated interventions are needed to mitigate the impact of loneliness in older adults. Some evidence suggests that mindfulness meditation may reduce stress, improve mood and cognitive function, and may also impact loneliness per se. Many meditation apps offer an accessible way to meditate at home. However, robust research is needed to assess the benefits of meditation using this technology for older adults. Muse is a meditation app that analyzes brain signals during meditation and provides users with real-time neurofeedback on their level offocus.

Methods: We conducted a pilot, randomized controlled trial to establish the acceptability and feasibility of a remote, mindfulness intervention using Muse in older adults, and to obtain preliminary data on its impact on mood and cognition. Twenty-six adults reporting feeling lonely were enrolled and randomized to an 8-week Muse- based meditation (MM) or a brain- training active control (BT) program. The MM group completed meditation sessions with real- time neurofeedback and guided meditation sessions using Muse. The BT group completed cognitively challenging games on the commercially available Peak app and listened to podcasts. The groups were matched on the amount of interactions with study staff and total program duration. Outcome measures included standardized self-report scales of loneliness, stress, depression, well-being, quality of life, sleep disturbance, resilience, and mindfulness. Staff blinded to program assignment administered cognitive tasks of episodic memory, working memory, and sustained attention, as well as a breath counting task. Assessments were taken at Pre, Mid, and Post intervention, and after a 2-month and 4-month (4M) follow-upperiod.

Results: Participants found both programs engaging and the remote assessments were feasible. The MM group showed a greater improvement in depressive symptoms, and psychological andphysical QOL, compared to the BT group, at Post and at 4M.

Conclusions: A Muse-based mindfulness program is an acceptable and accessible intervention for older adults. A large-scale randomized trial is warranted to evaluate the efficacy of this intervention in this group.

Our pilot study evaluated the feasibility, effectiveness, and implementation of a group-based lifestyle-integrated functional exercise (Mi-LiFE) program for older adults in an interprofessional primary care practice. A physical therapist taught participants how to integrate strength and balance activities into daily routines during one individual and four group sessions, and two follow-up phone calls. Feasibility outcomes were recruitment, adherence, and retention over 6 months. Physical activity (PA) (accelerometer, International Physical Activity Questionnaire [IPAQ]), Short Physical Performance Battery (SPPB), and health-related quality of life (EuroQol Five-Dimensional Questionnaire with 3 Levels [EQ5D-3L]) were evaluated at baseline and 6 months. Of the 123 eligible individuals, 39 per cent participated and 61 per cent were not interested or unreachable. Forty-eight participants (mean ± standard deviation [SD] age = 81 ± 5 years; body mass index [BMI] = 28 ± 5 kg/m2; 60% women; moderate-to-vigorous PA = 49 ± 87 minutes/week) enrolled. Four participants withdrew prior to intervention. Thirty-two participants (67%) were retained at follow-up. Daily diary-documented adherence was 50 per cent at 6 months, and 77 per cent attended more than four sessions. No statistically significant changes in moderate-to-vigorous PA and SPPB outcomes were observed; yet self-reported strength and balance PA and quality of life significantly improved at follow-up. The Mi-LiFE program is feasible with acceptable recruitment and attendance rates alongside modifications to address retention and adherence challenges. These findings inform the feasibility of future pragmatic exercise programs in primary care for older adults.

Janus spheres, micron-sized silica spheres half-coated with platinum, move rectilinearly away from the platinum side in aqueous hydrogen peroxide. Upon self-assembling, these colloidal particles can form dimers with different conformations that exhibit both rectilinear and rotational modes of motion depending upon the relative orientation of each Janus sphere. At the micron length-scale, stochastic rotational Brownian dynamics is of the order of deterministic dynamics, and their coupling results in effective diffusion, in addition to passive translational diffusion. For dimers with rotary motion, the dynamic coupling leads to spiral trajectories for an ensemble average of the displacement vector.

The HealthAgents project aims to provide a decision support system for brain tumour diagnosis using a collaborative network of distributed agents. The goal is that through the aggregation of the small data sets available at individual hospitals, much better decision support classifiers can be created and made available to the hospitals taking part. In this paper, we describe the technicalities of the HealthAgents framework, in particular how the interoperability of the various agents is managed using semantic web technologies. On the broad scale the architecture is based around distributed data-mart agents that provide ontological access to hospitals’ underlying data that has been anonymized and processed from proprietary formats into a canonical format. Classifier producers have agents that gather the global data from participating hospitals such that classifiers can be created and deployed as agents. The design on a microscale has each agent built upon a generic-layered framework that provides the common agent program code, allowing rapid development of agents for the system. We believe that our framework provides a well-engineered, agent-based approach to data sharing in a medical context. It can provide a better basis on which to investigate the effectiveness of new classification techniques for brain tumour diagnosis.

In this paper, we analyze the special security requirements for software support in health care and the HealthAgents system in particular. Our security solution consists of a link-anonymized data scheme, a secure data transportation service, a secure data sharing and collection service, and a more advanced access control mechanism. The novel security service architecture, as part of the integrated system architecture, provides a secure health-care infrastructure for HealthAgents and can be easily adapted for other health-care applications.

In the past decade, the pandemics of highly pathogenic avian influenza H5N1 and the novel H1N1 influenza have both illustrated the potential of influenza viruses to rapidly emerge and spread widely in animals and people. Since both of these viruses are zoonotic, these pandemics have been the driving force behind a renewed commitment by the medical and veterinary professions to practice One World, One Health for the control of infectious diseases. The discovery in 2004 that an equine origin H3N8 influenza virus was the cause of an extensive epidemic of respiratory disease in dogs in the USA came as a surprise; at that time dogs were thought to be refractory to infection with influenza viruses. In 2007, a second emerging canine influenza was confirmed in Korea, but this time the causal virus was an H3N2 avian influenza virus. This review focuses on recent events associated with equine and canine influenza viruses. While these viruses do not appear to be zoonotic, the close association between humans and dogs, and to a lesser extent horses, demands that we develop better surveillance and control strategies for emerging diseases in companion animals within the context of One World, One Health.

The lactic acid bacteria (LAB) play an important role in the production of fermented foods. The development of concentrated cultures of LAB, for inoculating the production vat directly (bulk starters), has eliminated many problems traditionally involved in their preparation and maintenance by the food industry. For industrial use, LAB are often preserved in a frozen or dried form, the latter preparations having lower transport and storage costs (Kets et al. 1996). Dried cultures, however, lose viability/activity during storage, especially when kept at room temperature (Champagne et al. 1991; Teixeira et al. 1995a,b; Castro et al. 1996). Attempts to improve the survival of LAB during drying have already been tried (Linders et al. 1997b; Gardiner et al. 2000). Previous results indicated a direct relationship between the presence of compatible solutes in LAB and their ability to survive drying conditions. Such solutes include amino acids, amino acid derivatives, quaternary amines, sugars and tetrahydropyrimidines (Kets & De Bont, 1994; Kets et al. 1994, 1996).
