Batch sorption experiments at fixed initial Np(V) concentration (∼1 × 10−6 M 237Np), M/V ratio (4 g L−1), and ionic strength (0.1 molal NaNO3) were conducted to determine the effects of varying pH and on Np(V) sorption on SAz-1 montmorillonite. The results show that Np(V) sorption on montmorillonite is strongly influenced by pH and . In the absence of CO2, Np(V) sorption increases over the entire pH range examined (∼3 to ∼10), with measured sorption coefficients (KD) of about 10 mL g−1 at pH < 6 to KD ∼ 1000 mL g−1 at a pH of 10.5. However, for experiments open to atmospheric CO2 (), Np(V) sorption peaks at KD ∼ 100 mL g−1 at pH of 8 to 8.5 and decreases at higher or lower pH. A comparison of the pH-dependence of Np(V) sorption with that of Np(V) aqueous speciation indicates a close correlation between Np(V) sorption and the stability field of the Np(V)-hydroxy complex NpO2OH0 (aq). In the presence of CO2 and aqueous carbonate, sorption is inhibited at pH > 8 due to formation of aqueous Np(V)-carbonate complexes. A relatively simple 2-site Diffuse-Layer Model (DLM) with a single Np(V) surface complexation reaction per site effectively simulates the complex sorption behavior observed in the Np(V)-H2O-CO2-montmorillonite system. The good agreement between measured and DLM-predicted sorption values suggests that surface complexation models based on parameters derived from a limited set of data could be useful in extrapolating radionuclide sorption over a range of geochemical conditions. Such an approach could be used to support transport modeling and could provide a better alternative to the current use of constant KD values in performance assessment transport calculations.

To investigate the symptoms of SARS-CoV-2 infection, their dynamics and their discriminatory power for the disease using longitudinally, prospectively collected information reported at the time of their occurrence. We have analysed data from a large phase 3 clinical UK COVID-19 vaccine trial. The alpha variant was the predominant strain. Participants were assessed for SARS-CoV-2 infection via nasal/throat PCR at recruitment, vaccination appointments, and when symptomatic. Statistical techniques were implemented to infer estimates representative of the UK population, accounting for multiple symptomatic episodes associated with one individual. An optimal diagnostic model for SARS-CoV-2 infection was derived. The 4-month prevalence of SARS-CoV-2 was 2.1%; increasing to 19.4% (16.0%–22.7%) in participants reporting loss of appetite and 31.9% (27.1%–36.8%) in those with anosmia/ageusia. The model identified anosmia and/or ageusia, fever, congestion, and cough to be significantly associated with SARS-CoV-2 infection. Symptoms’ dynamics were vastly different in the two groups; after a slow start peaking later and lasting longer in PCR+ participants, whilst exhibiting a consistent decline in PCR- participants, with, on average, fewer than 3 days of symptoms reported. Anosmia/ageusia peaked late in confirmed SARS-CoV-2 infection (day 12), indicating a low discrimination power for early disease diagnosis.

Background
Different diagnostic interviews are used as reference standards for major depression classification in research. Semi-structured interviews involve clinical judgement, whereas fully structured interviews are completely scripted. The Mini International Neuropsychiatric Interview (MINI), a brief fully structured interview, is also sometimes used. It is not known whether interview method is associated with probability of major depression classification.
AimsTo evaluate the association between interview method and odds of major depression classification, controlling for depressive symptom scores and participant characteristics.
MethodData collected for an individual participant data meta-analysis of Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9) diagnostic accuracy were analysed and binomial generalised linear mixed models were fit.
ResultsA total of 17 158 participants (2287 with major depression) from 57 primary studies were analysed. Among fully structured interviews, odds of major depression were higher for the MINI compared with the Composite International Diagnostic Interview (CIDI) (odds ratio (OR) = 2.10; 95% CI = 1.15–3.87). Compared with semi-structured interviews, fully structured interviews (MINI excluded) were non-significantly more likely to classify participants with low-level depressive symptoms (PHQ-9 scores ≤6) as having major depression (OR = 3.13; 95% CI = 0.98–10.00), similarly likely for moderate-level symptoms (PHQ-9 scores 7–15) (OR = 0.96; 95% CI = 0.56–1.66) and significantly less likely for high-level symptoms (PHQ-9 scores ≥16) (OR = 0.50; 95% CI = 0.26–0.97).
ConclusionsThe MINI may identify more people as depressed than the CIDI, and semi-structured and fully structured interviews may not be interchangeable methods, but these results should be replicated.

Pollen grains and spores, plant macrofossils, and sponge spicules from a 7.2-m sediment core from Jackson Pond dating back to 20,000 yr B.P. are the basis for new interpretations of vegetational, limnological, and climatic changes in central Kentucky. During the full-glacial interval (20,400 to 16,800 yr B.P.) upland vegetation was closed spruce forest with jack pine as a subdominant. Aquatic macrophyte and sponge assemblages indicate that the site was a relatively deep, open pond with low organic productivity. During late-glacial time (16,800 to 11,300 yr B.P.) spruce populations continued to dominate while jack pine declined and sedge increased as the vegetation became a more open, taiga-like boreal woodland. Between 11,300 and 10,000 yr B.P., abundances of spruce and oak pollen oscillated reciprocally, possibly reflecting the Younger Dryas oscillation as boreal taxa underwent a series of declines and increases at the southern limit of their ranges before becoming extirpated and replaced by deciduous forest. In the early Holocene (10,000 to 7300 yr B.P.) a mesic deciduous woodland developed; it was replaced by xeric oak-hickory forest during the middle Holocene between 7300 and 3900 yr B.P. Grass increased after 3900 yr B.P., indicating that the presettlement vegetation mosaic of mixed deciduous forest and prairie (the “Kentucky Barrens”) became established in central Kentucky after the Hypsithermal interval. Sponge spicules increased in number during the Holocene, reflecting reduced water depths in the pond. Sediment infilling, as well as climatic warming and the expansion of fringing shrub thickets, increased nutrient and habitat availability for freshwater sponges.

Bulk silicon-germanium (SiGe) alloys and two SiGe thick films (4 and 5 μm) on Si wafers were tested with the electron probe microanalyzer (EPMA) using wavelength dispersive spectrometers (WDS) for heterogeneity and composition for use as reference materials needed by the microelectronics industry. One alloy with a nominal composition of Si0.86Ge0.14 and the two thick films with nominal compositions of Si0.90Ge0.10 and Si0.75Ge0.25 on Si, evaluated for micro- and macroheterogeneity, will make good microanalysis reference materials with an overall expanded heterogeneity uncertainty of 1.1% relative or less for Ge. The bulk Ge composition in the Si0.86Ge0.14 alloy was determined to be 30.228% mass fraction Ge with an expanded uncertainty of the mean of 0.195% mass fraction. The thick films were quantified with WDS-EPMA using both the Si0.86Ge0.14 alloy and element wafers as reference materials. The Ge concentration was determined to be 22.80% mass fraction with an expanded uncertainty of the mean of 0.12% mass fraction for the Si0.90Ge0.10 wafer and 43.66% mass fraction for the Si0.75Ge0.25 wafer with an expanded uncertainty of the mean of 0.25% mass fraction. The two thick SiGe films will be issued as National Institute of Standards and Technology Reference Materials (RM 8905).

Water waves are familiar to all of us and we encounter them in a variety of guises in many places, be it crashing to shore at the beach, rippling concentrically outward where a pebble lands in a pond or simply splashing at the sides of the bath. The study of waves can be simplified by idealising them as graphs, each graph being thought of as a cross-section of a physical wave at an instant in time. A sequence of such graphs can represent the progress of the wave as time passes.

An approach is developed for including aspects of mechanistic models of radionuclide sorption into performance assessment (PA) calculations. Water chemistry data from the vicinity of Yucca Mountain (YM), Nevada are screened and used to calculate the ranges in key parameters that could exert control on radionuclide sorption behavior. Using a diffuse-layer surface complexation model, sorption parameters for Np(V) and U(VI) are calculated based on the chemistry of each water sample. Model results suggest that lognormal probability distribution functions (PDFs) of sorption parameters are appropriate for most of the samples; the total calculated range is almost five orders of magnitude for Np(V) sorption and nine orders of magnitude for U(VI) sorption, but most samples fall in a narrower range. Finally, statistical correlation between the calculated Np(V) and U(VI) sorption parameters can be included as input into PA sampling routines, so that the value selected for one radionuclide sorption parameter is conditioned by its statistical relationship to the others. The approaches outlined here can be adapted readily to current PA efforts, using site-specific information to provide geochemical constraints on PDFs for radionuclide transport parameters.

A systematic study of both proton and deuteron NMR in hydrogenated amorphous silicon films has revealed significant resonance shifts among various resolved components. The shifts include both paramagnetic and diamagnetic displacements of resolved spectral features from trapped molecular hydrogens. The shifts depend on film quality and deposition conditions. Some of the shifts vary as 1/T and reflect Curie susceptibilities characteristic of local regions of differing dangling bond densities. Spectra from relatively immobile hydrogen molecules trapped in nanovoids are shifted diamagnetically and broadened as temperature decreases. Hydrogens tightly bound to Si do not show similar changes and thus are more remote from dangling bonds and other magnetic defects. Similar spectrally-resol ved shifts have been observed in a-Ge and a-SiGe films and are correlated with film photovoltaic quality as measured by mobility-lifetime products.

Light-induced rearrangements in a-Si:H,D during and after illumination have been studied by deuteron magnetic resonance (DMR). A film sample was deposited on a 230°C Al substrate by plasma decomposition of S1H4 and D2. The high quality film contained 4 at.% H and 4 at. % D. DMR spectra of fast-relaxing components were examined at 700 msec or less after radio frequency saturation. At 30 K these showed a broad central signal (primarily nanovoid-trapped HD and D2), part of which shifted paramagnetically during illumination. No comparable shifts were shown by spectral components from Si-bonded hydrogen or from microvoid-contained dense fluid hydrogen. The observed post-illumination shifts vanished upon 150°C dark anneal and reflected light-induced metastable magnetic changes in the surroundings of hydrogen trapped in nanovoids.

We report on the results of a UV-Optical spectral monitoring of the bright Seyfert 1 galactic nuclei Mkn 335. This campaign began in June, 1989, and ended in June, 1991. Ultraviolet spectra of fourteen epochs at nearly uniform sampling of 30-day intervals, except when the object was inaccessible from the IUE satellite, have been obtained, of which twelve were coordinated with quasi-simultaneous ground-based optical observations made at Lick Observatory.

We give a complete description of the additive Dyer-Lashof operations on the Hopf ring with coefficients in . We re-prove a result of Ravenel and Wilson [9] giving the operations on the element and give formulae for the operations on the other generators.
