The current emphasis in aerospace component development is on creating safe, reliable and cost-effective technologies. However, the intricate design of stage separation systems renders component reliability a critical factor in determining mission success or failure. One of the technical challenges involves the development of various aerospace mechanisms, such as payload separation, heavy propulsion system separation, ejection of auxiliary components and detachment of rigid components. These stage separation mechanisms commonly employ pyrotechnic devices, which, by their operational nature, impart shock to the spacecraft, potentially causing damage or adverse effects on flight instruments. Therefore, it is imperative to explore multiple viable concepts aimed at reducing shock and experimentally ascertain the impact of shock using diverse shock attenuation techniques. While existing literature primarily addresses shock attenuation with distance from the shock source, limited attention has been given to diminishing shock at the location of the shock-generating element. This study employed various shock-attenuating devices, including dampers, metallic foam structures, viscous materials and dampeners, to assess the effectiveness of shock reduction. Furthermore, the study investigated shock reduction resulting from the elimination of rigid connections, such as bolted joints, from pyro-actuated mechanisms. Through a series of experiments, a conclusive analysis was conducted to determine the approach for achieving a substantial reduction in pyro shock.

Mean squared error of prediction is used as the criterion for determining which of two multiple regression models (not necessarily nested) is more predictive. We show that an unrestricted (or true) model with t parameters should be chosen over a restricted (or misspecified) model with m parameters if (Pt2−Pm2)>(1−Pt2)(t−m)/n, where Pt2 and Pm2 are the population coefficients of determination of the unrestricted and restricted models, respectively, and n is the sample size. The left-hand side of the above inequality represents the squared bias in prediction by using the restricted model, and the right-hand side gives the reduction in variance of prediction error by using the restricted model. Thus, model choice amounts to the classical statistical tradeoff of bias against variance. In practical applications, we recommend that P2 be estimated by adjusted R2. Our recommendation is equivalent to performing the F-test for model comparison, and using a critical value of 2−(m/n); that is, if F>2−(m/n), the unrestricted model is recommended; otherwise, the restricted model is recommended.

The treatment of smectites with a hydroxy-Al polymer produced chemically modified clays that had much greater affinities for chlorinated dioxins and biphenyls than untreated clays. For hydroxy-Al-treated kaolinite, the high affinity for chlorinated dioxins is thought to have arisen from an interaction between the hydroxy-Al polymer bound to the clay and the chlorinated dioxin in solution. Thus, the adsorption of dioxins from aqueous solution by hydroxy-Al-treated clays is similar to the adsorption of reactants from the gas phase by metals supported on mineral oxides during catalysis. In both systems, the essentially inert mineral oxide support effectively disperses the active adsorptive agent. At the concentrations of octachlorodioxin used in this study (≤5 ppb), hydroxy-Al-montmorillonite had a distribution coefficient of 90,000 (ml/g), corresponding to about 95% removal efficiency of the dioxin from solution per batch. For hexachlorohiphenyl, the distribution coefficient was 30,000 (ml/g), and the removal efficiency was 85%.

Novel modified clay adsorbents were prepared by blocking cation-exchange sites of an expandable clay, such as montmorillonite, with polymeric or polyvalent inorganic ions and by using cationic surfactants as sources of surface organic carbon. Electrokinetic measurements demonstrated that the adsorbed polycations were essentially nonexchangeable. Adsorption and desorption experiments revealed that about 90% of the cationic surfactant was apparently irreversibly bound to the surface. Flocculation and peptization studies were performed to establish that the adsorbed surfactant moiety was oriented with its hydrocarbon tail towards the surface. Such a configuration of simultaneously adsorbed polycations and cationic surfactants was designated as an inorgano-organo-clay (IOC). As shown in an accompanying paper, these IOCs bind priority pollutants as strongly as granulated activated carbon.

Benzo(a)pyrene (B(a)P), and chlorophenols were sorbed from their respective aqueous solutions onto inorgano-organo-clays (IOCs). Cetyl pyridinium hydroxy-Al montmorillonite (CPC-hydroxy-Al montmorillonite), an IOC, containing only 11–12% surface organic carbon by weight, bound pentachlorophenol strongly, with an observed monolayer capacity of 0.08 mmole/g. The comparable value for granulated activated carbon (GAC) was found to be 0.12 mmole/g. On the other hand, cetyl pyridinium cation-exchanged montmorillonite (CPC-montmorillonite), containing 19.2% surface organic carbon by weight, did not bind pentachlorophenol as efficiently as did IOCs. For benzo(a)pyrene, CPC-hydroxy-Al montmorillonite was found to be a better adsorbent than GAC and CPC-montmorillonite. The significant difference in the sorption potential of the two types of surfactant-laden clays for pentachlorophenol and benzo(a)pyrene was probably due to the surface orientation of the adsorbed organic carbon. For 3,5-dichlorophenol, however, both types of organo-clays exhibited weak binding, which was probably due to the greater aqueous solubility of the dichlorophenol.

Background: With the emergence of antibiotic resistant threats and the need for appropriate antibiotic use, laboratory microbiology information is important to guide clinical decision making in nursing homes, where access to such data can be limited. Susceptibility data are necessary to inform antibiotic selection and to monitor changes in resistance patterns over time. To contribute to existing data that describe antibiotic resistance among nursing home residents, we summarized antibiotic susceptibility data from organisms commonly isolated from urine cultures collected as part of the CDC multistate, Emerging Infections Program (EIP) nursing home prevalence survey. Methods: In 2017, urine culture and antibiotic susceptibility data for selected organisms were retrospectively collected from nursing home residents’ medical records by trained EIP staff. Urine culture results reported as negative (no growth) or contaminated were excluded. Susceptibility results were recorded as susceptible, non-susceptible (resistant or intermediate), or not tested. The pooled mean percentage tested and percentage non-susceptible were calculated for selected antibiotic agents and classes using available data. Susceptibility data were analyzed for organisms with ≥20 isolates. The definition for multidrug-resistance (MDR) was based on the CDC and European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control’s interim standard definitions. Data were analyzed using SAS v 9.4 software. Results: Among 161 participating nursing homes and 15,276 residents, 300 residents (2.0%) had documentation of a urine culture at the time of the survey, and 229 (76.3%) were positive. Escherichia coli, Proteus mirabilis, Klebsiella spp, and Enterococcus spp represented 73.0% of all urine isolates (N = 278). There were 215 (77.3%) isolates with reported susceptibility data (Fig. 1). Of these, data were analyzed for 187 (87.0%) (Fig. 2). All isolates tested for carbapenems were susceptible. Fluoroquinolone non-susceptibility was most prevalent among E. coli (42.9%) and P. mirabilis (55.9%). Among Klebsiella spp, the highest percentages of non-susceptibility were observed for extended-spectrum cephalosporins and folate pathway inhibitors (25.0% each). Glycopeptide non-susceptibility was 10.0% for Enterococcus spp. The percentage of isolates classified as MDR ranged from 10.1% for E. coli to 14.7% for P. mirabilis. Conclusions: Substantial levels of non-susceptibility were observed for nursing home residents’ urine isolates, with 10% to 56% reported as non-susceptible to the antibiotics assessed. Non-susceptibility was highest for fluoroquinolones, an antibiotic class commonly used in nursing homes, and ≥ 10% of selected isolates were MDR. Our findings reinforce the importance of nursing homes using susceptibility data from laboratory service providers to guide antibiotic prescribing and to monitor levels of resistance.

Background: Antibiotics are among the most commonly prescribed drugs in nursing homes; urinary tract infections (UTIs) are a frequent indication. Although there is no gold standard for the diagnosis of UTIs, various criteria have been developed to inform and standardize nursing home prescribing decisions, with the goal of reducing unnecessary antibiotic prescribing. Using different published criteria designed to guide decisions on initiating treatment of UTIs (ie, symptomatic, catheter-associated, and uncomplicated cystitis), our objective was to assess the appropriateness of antibiotic prescribing among NH residents. Methods: In 2017, the CDC Emerging Infections Program (EIP) performed a prevalence survey of healthcare-associated infections and antibiotic use in 161 nursing homes from 10 states: California, Colorado, Connecticut, Georgia, Maryland, Minnesota, New Mexico, New York, Oregon, and Tennessee. EIP staff reviewed resident medical records to collect demographic and clinical information, infection signs, symptoms, and diagnostic testing documented on the day an antibiotic was initiated and 6 days prior. We applied 4 criteria to determine whether initiation of treatment for UTI was supported: (1) the Loeb minimum clinical criteria (Loeb); (2) the Suspected UTI Situation, Background, Assessment, and Recommendation tool (UTI SBAR tool); (3) adaptation of Infectious Diseases Society of America UTI treatment guidelines for nursing home residents (Crnich & Drinka); and (4) diagnostic criteria for uncomplicated cystitis (cystitis consensus) (Fig. 1). We calculated the percentage of residents for whom initiating UTI treatment was appropriate by these criteria. Results: Of 248 residents for whom UTI treatment was initiated in the nursing home, the median age was 79 years [IQR, 19], 63% were female, and 35% were admitted for postacute care. There was substantial variability in the percentage of residents with antibiotic initiation classified as appropriate by each of the criteria, ranging from 8% for the cystitis consensus, to 27% for Loeb, to 33% for the UTI SBAR tool, to 51% for Crnich and Drinka (Fig. 2). Conclusions: Appropriate initiation of UTI treatment among nursing home residents remained low regardless of criteria used. At best only half of antibiotic treatment met published prescribing criteria. Although insufficient documentation of infection signs, symptoms and testing may have contributed to the low percentages observed, adequate documentation in the medical record to support prescribing should be standard practice, as outlined in the CDC Core Elements of Antibiotic Stewardship for nursing homes. Standardized UTI prescribing criteria should be incorporated into nursing home stewardship activities to improve the assessment and documentation of symptomatic UTI and to reduce inappropriate antibiotic use.

We study firm level antecedents that drive different motives of internationalization of emerging economy firms. Based on firm's resource based considerations of asset exploitation versus asset augmentation and locational advantages of host countries, we provide a framework to classify the motives of internationalization of emerging economy firms belonging to knowledge intensive industries. Motives of internationalization have been classified into three broad categories – market-seeking, opportunity-seeking, and strategic asset-seeking. We determine motives behind different modes of internationalization – alliances, acquisitions, and greenfield ventures. Drawing upon the adaptability, amalgamation, and ambidexterity (AAA) advantages from the springboard perspective, we find that firm characteristics like R&D investments, availability of financial slack, firm's ownership structure, and family control shape up its motive of internationalization.

Biological and morphological plasticity in polyphagous insect herbivores allow them to exploit diverse host plant species. Geographical differences in resource availability can lead to preferential host exploitation and result in inconsistent host specialization. Biological and molecular data provide insights into specialization and plasticity of such herbivore populations. In agricultural landscapes, Aphis gossypii encounters several crop and non-crop hosts, which exist in temporal and spatial proximity. We investigated the host-specialization of two A. gossypii host-associated populations (HAPs), which were field collected from cotton and squash (cotton-associated population and melon-associated population), and later maintained separately in the greenhouse. The two aphid populations were exposed to seven plant species (cotton, okra, watermelon, squash, cucumber, pigweed, and morning glory), and evaluated for their host utilization plasticity by estimating aphid's fitness parameters (nymphal period, adult period, fecundity, and intrinsic rate of increase). Four phenotypical characters (body length, head capsule width, hind tibia length and cornicle length) were also measured from the resulting 14 different HAP × host plant combinations. Phylogenetic analysis of mitochondrial COI sequences showed no genetic variation between the two HAPs. Fitness parameters indicated a significant variation between the two aphid populations, and the variation was influenced by host plants. The performance of melon-aphids was poor (up to 89% reduction in fecundity) on malvaceous hosts, cotton and okra. However, cotton-aphids performed better on cucurbitaceous hosts, squash and watermelon (up to 66% increased fecundity) compared with the natal host, cotton. Both HAPs were able to reproduce on two weed hosts. Cotton-aphids were smaller than melon-aphids irrespective of their host plants. Results from this study suggest that the two HAPs in the study area do not have strict host specialization; rather they exhibit plasticity in utilizing several hosts. In this scenario, it is unlikely that host-associated A. gossypii populations would evolve into host-specific biotypes.

Onion thrips, Thrips tabaci (Lindeman), is a prominent species infesting onion and tomato in the northern highlands of Tanzania. It causes considerable leaf damage by direct feeding and also transmits the Iris yellow spot virus (IYSV). Hence, one of the objectives of this study was to identify the most resistant onion entries against T. tabaci. One highly resistant (VI038552) and two resistant onion entries (VI038512 and AVON 1067) were identified against T. tabaci. Besides thrips resistance, the bulb size of VI038512 was also equivalent to one of the commercial varieties, Texas. The highly resistant VI038552 recorded the highest yield, followed by the resistant entry, VI038512. However, the yield of AVON 1067 was significantly lower. Elucidation of the biophysical bases of resistance revealed that there was a significant negative correlation between leaf angle as well as leaf toughness and thrips damage. The total epicuticular wax content in the leaves had a weak and non-significant negative relationship with thrips damage. The scanning electron microscopic study confirmed that the wax crystals occurred as filaments, rods, platelets, tubes and complex dendritic structures, and that they were densely arranged in resistant or moderately resistant entries. Studies on the biochemical basis of resistance confirmed that there was a significant negative relationship between total phenol content and thrips damage. Similarly, the relationship between total foliar amino acids or total sugars and thrips damage was inversely correlated and non-significant. Hence, entries VI038552 and VI038512 could be promising candidates for breeding programmes aimed at developing onion varieties that are resistant to thrips and that are high yielding, which will help to enhance the productivity of onions in sub-Saharan Africa.

The antimicrobial use (AU) option within the National Healthcare Safety Network summarizes antimicrobial prescribing data as a standardized antimicrobial administration ratio (SAAR). A hospital’s antimicrobial stewardship program found that greater involvement of an infectious disease physician in prospective audit and feedback procedures was associated with reductions in SAAR values across multiple antimicrobial categories.

Ferromagnetic/Ferroelectric/Ferromagnetic (Ni/PZT/Ni) tri-layer artificial multiferroelectric structures in spin capacitor configuration were fabricated by sputtering ferromagnetic electrodes on PZT. Magnetocapacitance, magnetoimpedance, and phase angle measurements were carried out by a wide range of frequencies and magnetic fields at room temperature. We also compared the magnetodielectric measurements with Ni/PZT/Ag and Ag/PZT/Ag tri-layers structures. Ni/PZT/Ni spin capacitor shows a significantly different behavior compared to conventional PZT capacitor with Ag electrode and mixed electrode capacitor with one ferromagnetic and one conventional electrode.

Pneumonia due to either Streptococcus pneumoniae (Sp) or Staphylococcus aureus (Sa) accounts for most mortality after influenza and acute respiratory illness (ARI). Because carriage precedes infection, we estimated Sp and Sa carriage to examine the co-colonization dynamics between Sp, Sa and respiratory viruses in the presence of ARI in the oropharynx. We tested oropharyngeal specimens of community subjects (aged ⩾2 years) with ARI for the presence of influenza A and B, 11 other common respiratory viruses, Sp and Sa, using real-time PCR. A total of 338 participants reported 519 ARI episodes of which 119 (35%) carried Sp, 52 (13%) carried Sa and 25 (7%) carried both. Thirty-five subjects tested positive for influenza, of which 14 (40%) carried Sp and six (17%) carried Sa, significantly more than in the influenza-negative group (P = 0·03 and P = 0·04, respectively). In subjects infected by any virus compared to those with no virus, Sp carriage (39·2% vs. 27·9%, P = 0·03) but not Sa carriage (11·6% vs. 14%, P = 0·6) was more frequent. For children, when Sa was present, Sp carriage tended to be less frequent than expected given the presence of viral infection, but not significantly [observed relative risk 1·14, 95% confidence interval (CI) 0·4–3·1; with a relative excess risk due to interaction of –0·11]. Independent of age, Sp carriers were more likely to return that season with subsequent ARI (odds ratio 2·14, 95% CI 1·1–4·3, P = 0·03). Both Sp and Sa carriage rates in the oropharynx increase during influenza infection in children. However, no negative interaction between Sp and Sa was observed. Sp carriers are more likely to suffer subsequent ARI episodes than non-carriers.

In recent years a number of authors have analysed the bending of clamped skew plates under uniform pressure. Many of these solutions are very approximate. Favre and Dorman adopted the Ritz method and their expressions for displacement are restrictive. Based on the generalised method postulated by Lardy, Mirsky has presented a solution which involves considerable algebraic and arithmetic work. Komatsu's paper contains a solution using conformal mapping. Quinlan has given a powerful method to solve skew plate problems involving different boundary conditions and various types of loadings, but no numerical work has been done.

In their earlier paper the first two authors have given a solution to the problem of bending of clamped skew plates. The solution was obtained using the eigenfunctions of a beam. They have shown in their discussion that their results agree with other investigators except Kennedy who has used Galerkin's method. It was surprising to note that though both the authors’ and Kennedy's methods converged well, the results did not agree for all the cases and the difference being maximum for the rhombic case. It was mentioned in the discussion that additional work was desirable to resolve the difference. Hence in this note results using a different approach have been presented both for clamped and simply supported isotropic skew plates subjected to uniformly distributed load and the results are compared with the available ones.
