Dicamba is a herbicide used for the control of broadleaf weeds in wheat. Dicamba, applied within the recommended growth stage interval, reduced the grain yield of Wakefield winter wheat by 95% in a herbicide sensitivity study at Michigan State University. Growers have also reported yield loss when using dicamba on Wakefield. Field and greenhouse experiments were conducted to characterize the response of Wakefield winter wheat to dicamba and to compare this response to that of ‘Harus’ winter wheat, a cultivar that is not considered sensitive to dicamba. This research was conducted to characterize the sensitivity of Wakefield to dicamba and to develop visual methods for detecting sensitivity of wheat cultivars to dicamba. Field experiments confirmed that dicamba affects the number of spikelets and the seed weight of Harus and Wakefield similarly. However, dicamba, applied within the recommended application interval, caused small, shriveled (underdeveloped) seeds to occur in Wakefield in the field and greenhouse. These seeds weighed very little, did not contribute to grain yield, and could not be harvested mechanically. Dicamba reduced the number of fully developed seeds of Wakefield by as much as 62% in the field and 92% in the greenhouse when applied within the recommended application interval. The number of fully developed seeds of Harus was reduced in the field only when dicamba was applied later than the recommended application interval. Decreases in grain yield due to dicamba were caused primarily by decreases in the number of fully developed seeds. Greenhouse experiments indicated that pollen abnormalities were only a minor cause of the development of underdeveloped seeds.

Mathematical programming-based systems analysis is used to examine the consequences of alternative operation configuration for the agricultural operations within the Texas Department of Criminal Justice. Continuation versus elimination of the total operation as well as individual operating departments are considered. Methodology includes a firm systems operation model combined with capital budgeting and an integer programming based investment model. Results indicate the resources realize a positive return as a whole, but some enterprises are not using resources profitably. The integer investment model is found to be superior for investigating whether to continue multiple interrelated enterprises.

The impact of a monopolist or monopsonist on the price and output performance in comparison with perfectly competitive markets is well documented. These markets are coordinated through spot market exchanges.

The seventh annual Teaching and Learning Conference (TLC) was held in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, from February 5 to 7, 2010, with 224 attendees onsite. The theme for the meeting was “Advancing Excellence in Teaching Political Science.” Using the working-group model, the TLC track format encourages in-depth discussion and debate on research dealing with the scholarship of teaching and learning.

Using time resolved ultrafast spectroscopy, we have demonstrated that the far infrared (FIR) excitations in ferroelectric crystals may be modified through an arsenal of control techniques from the fields of guided waves, geometrical and Fourier optics, and optical pulse shaping. We show that LiNbO3 and LiTaO3 crystals of 10–250 μm thickness behave as slab waveguides for phonon-polaritons, which are admixtures of electromagnetic waves and lattice vibrations, when the polariton wavelength is on the order of or greater than the crystal thickness. Furthermore, we show that ferroelectric crystals are amenable to processing by ultrafast laser ablation, allowing for milling of user-defined patterns designed for guidance and control of phonon-polariton propagation. We have fabricated several functional structures including THz rectangular waveguides, resonators, splitters/couplers, interferometers, focusing reflectors, and diffractive elements. Electric field enhancement has been obtained with the reflective structures, through spatial shaping, of the optical excitation beam used for phonon-polariton generation, and through temporal pulse shaping to permit repetitive excitation of a phonon-polariton resonant cavity.

Despite several trials showing reductions in tone and improvements in gait, the relation between botulinum toxin A (BTX-A) dose and response has rarely been investigated. A double-blind randomized comparison of two doses of BTX-A in children with spastic hemiplegic cerebral palsy (n=48, mean age 7 years 6 months, range 3 to 15 years) was undertaken. The two doses selected were representative of the lower and the higher doses used in clinical practice (24 units/kg body weight and 8 units/kg body weight). Using gait analysis we evaluated hip, knee, and ankle joint kinetics and sagittal kinematics throughout the gait cycle. Gastrocnemius muscle length was calculated at each visit using the method described by Eames and used as our primary outcome measure. Our secondary outcome variable was maximum ankle angle measured during stance and swing phases. In summary, we found that there were indications that 24 units/kg body weight was more effective and lasted longer than 8 units/kg. Analysis in terms of absolute dose suggested that the dose–response correlation was non-linear, and that the optimal range lay between 200 and 500 units BTX-A (Dysport).

Summary
The methods described below are those commonly used in the study of living microbial mats. Coverage here is not exhaustive; for some methods not here discussed only literature references are indicated. The material here presented (including appended tabulations of data: Tables 20.5–20.7) is relevant to the studies discussed in Chapter 6.
Preserved and Sectioned Material of Whole Mat (J. D. Farmer)
Syringe cores (30 cc) of mat are subsampled by slicing with a razor blade, and are fixed in a mixture of 3% glutaraldehyde and 1% formalin in pond water immediately following collection. Dehydrated samples are infiltrated with Spurr's Low Viscosity Embedding Medium (Spurr 1969; Polysciences, Inc.) under vacuum for several hours. A two-step graded series, beginning with a 50:50 mixture of resin and 100% ethanol for 2 hours, was found to enhance penetration. The hard cure schedule recommended by Polysciences is followed in order to obtain the hardest embedment for thin sections. Embedments are prepared in plastic “peel-a-way” molds (Polysciences, Inc.) and cured at 70°C for 8 hours.
Sections (20 to 30 µm thick, in order to facilitate comparisons with thin sections of fossil stromatolites) are prepared by hand grinding, following a modification of standard petrographic methods (Nye et al. 1972). Organisms in sections prepared from Spurr's resin can be stained using a 1% solution of toluidine blue in distilled water. A 1% solution of alizarine red in dilute HC1 is an effective counterstain for detecting carbonate.

Summary
Introduction
Modern microbial mats are structurally coherent macroscopic accumulations of microorganisms. Mats are widely distributed on earth. They are found in a surprisingly large number of diverse environments from the equatorial zones to both polar regions. They vary in size from extensive terrestrial and hypersaline mats that cover areas several square kilometers in extent to minute mats only a few square centimeters in area found in small thermal springs. They vary in thickness from massive accumulations measured in meters, such as those in the Persian Gulf and the Red Sea region, to thin films less than a few millimeters in thickness. In addition to being highly varied in size, modern microbial mats are also very diverse in morphology, community structure, and physiological characteristics. What do such mats have in common? Under what conditions do they form? What is the basis of their diversity? What insight do they provide, if any, to the interpretation of the widespread stromatolites of the Proterozoic?
A Terminology
Microbial mats are accretionary cohesive microbial communities which are often laminated and found growing at the sediment-water (occasionally sediment-air) interface. Most mats stabilize unconsolidated sediment. The mats are comprised of the various microorganisms that accumulate along with their metabolic products. The most conspicuous of these products is usually a copious amount of extracellular polysaccharide which helps hold the cells together to form a cohesive structure.
