Gully pot sediments and pavement and road gutter dusts have been collected from the city of Coventry in the West Midlands, UK. These samples have been subjected to metallic element analysis and the activity of a number of gamma-emitting radionuclides have been measured in order to assess whether they exceed published trigger or action levels, and whether their disposal or dispersal may have implications for receiving landfills and/or water courses. Results indicate above-background levels of metallic elements in dusts and sediments with Cu and Zn exceeding ICRCL action levels in some cases. The highest activities of some radionuclides are found in road gutter and street dusts and the lowest activities are found in gully pot sediments. Road dusts are more likely to be recirculated into the ambient air by passing traffic and could potentially pose a risk to pedestrians. The effective dose rates calculated for these dusts and sediments indicate that some samples approach and even exceed the 1 mSv y—1 limit to members of the public recommended by ICRP (1991). Some individual nuclides exceed their clearance levels laid down in the revised basic safety standards of the 1993b Radioactive Substances Act, 1993 (DoETR, 1999), by as much as 2.5 times. This is especially true of 210Pbun and 7Be, two fallout nuclides, and also of 40K.

Population genetics theory predicts that differences in breeding systems should be an important factor in the dynamics of selfish genetic elements, because of different intensities of selection on both hosts and elements. We examined population frequencies of transposable elements (TEs) in natural populations of the self-fertilizing nematode Caenorhabditis elegans and its outcrossing relative Caenorhabditis remanei. We identified a Tc1-like class of elements in the C. remanei genome with homology to the terminal inverted repeats of the C. elegans Tc1 transposon, which we name mTcre1. We measured levels of insertion polymorphism for all 32 Tc1 elements present in the genome sequence of the C. elegans N2 strain, and 16 mTcre1 elements from the genome sequence of the C. remanei PB4641 strain. We show that transposons are less polymorphic and segregate at higher frequencies in C. elegans compared with C. remanei. Estimates of the intensity of selection based on the population frequencies of polymorphic elements suggest that transposons are selectively neutral in C. elegans, but subject to purifying selection in C. remanei. These results are consistent with a reduced efficacy of natural selection against TEs in selfing populations, but may in part be explained by non-equilibrium TE dynamics.

Because of the uniformity of the text, NT papyri are well suited to codicological reconstruction. If there are two or more pieces of papyrus from the same codex, sound reconstructions are often possible. But good methodology will account for the fibre orientation of the fragments. Flawed conclusions are the inevitable result of neglecting such analysis. Skeat erred in this direction as regards [prod ]64+67 and [prod ]4. Nevertheless, his contribution in the area was substantial and enduring. It only remains for scholars to appreciate the insights that codicology can bring to the study of the NT text.

A high-level record structure for the international communication of 14C data bases is proposed. The record structure is based on the high-level communication format first proposed by the authors at the 23rd International Symposium on Archaeometry, Naples, 1983 and does not require the abandonment of existing systems. A description is given of an implementation of the high-level system at Harwell, with examples of retrieval in an international format (the Radiocarbon date list format) and a keyword-organized local format.

The Roman military site at Longthorpe, west of Peterborough, was discovered by observation from the air in 1961: no traces now remain on the surface. Excavations between 1967 and 1973 have shown that a 27-acre fortress with timber buildings, accommodating a legionary vexillation together with auxiliary troops, was succeeded by an 11-acre fort. The period of occupation extended from c. 44/8 to c. 62. Crop marks observed from the air at Orton Stanch, 400 m. south-east of the fortress, have led to the discovery of a native farmstead. Excavations there by Messrs. A. Challands, G. B. Dannell and Dr. J. P. Wild have shown that agricultural activities were intermitted for the period of the occupation of the fortress, the settlement being replaced by a large industrial establishment or worksdepot involved in pottery manufacture and possibly in bronze-working with clear military connections. The present report describes the excavation of the fortress: the industrial site is to be published in a future volume of Britannia.
