We are interested in the modelling of multi-dimensional turbulent hydraulic jumps in convergent radial flow. To describe the formation of intensive eddies (rollers) at the front of the hydraulic jump, a new model of shear shallow water flows is used. The governing equations form a non-conservative hyperbolic system with dissipative source terms. The structure of equations is reminiscent of generic Reynolds-averaged Euler equations for barotropic compressible turbulent flows. Two types of dissipative term are studied. The first one corresponds to a Chézy-like dissipation rate, and the second one to a standard energy dissipation rate commonly used in compressible turbulence. Both of them guarantee the positive definiteness of the Reynolds stress tensor. The equations are rewritten in polar coordinates and numerically solved by using an original splitting procedure. Numerical results for both types of dissipation are presented and qualitatively compared with the experimental works. The results show both experimentally observed phenomena (cusp formation at the front of the hydraulic jump) as well as new flow patterns (the shape of the hydraulic jump becomes a rotating square).

A two-layer long-wave approximation of the homogeneous Euler equations for a free-surface flow evolving over mild slopes is derived. The upper layer is turbulent and is described by depth-averaged equations for the layer thickness, average fluid velocity and fluid turbulent energy. The lower layer is almost potential and can be described by Serre–Su–Gardner–Green–Naghdi equations (a second-order shallow water approximation with respect to the parameter $H/L$, where $H$ is a characteristic water depth and $L$ is a characteristic wavelength). A simple model for vertical turbulent mixing is proposed governing the interaction between these layers. Stationary supercritical solutions to this model are first constructed, containing, in particular, a local turbulent subcritical zone at the forward slope of the wave. The non-stationary model was then numerically solved and compared with experimental data for the following two problems. The first one is the study of surface waves resulting from the interaction of a uniform free-surface flow with an immobile wall (the water hammer problem with a free surface). These waves are sometimes called ‘Favre waves’ in homage to Henry Favre and his contribution to the study of this phenomenon. When the Froude number is between 1 and approximately 1.3, an undular bore appears. The characteristics of the leading wave in an undular bore are in good agreement with experimental data by Favre (Ondes de Translation dans les Canaux Découverts, 1935, Dunod) and Treske (J. Hydraul Res., vol. 32 (3), 1994, pp. 355–370). When the Froude number is between 1.3 and 1.4, the transition from an undular bore to a breaking (monotone) bore occurs. The shoaling and breaking of a solitary wave propagating in a long channel (300 m) of mild slope (1/60) was then studied. Good agreement with experimental data by Hsiao et al. (Coast. Engng, vol. 55, 2008, pp. 975–988) for the wave profile evolution was found.

We derive a dispersive model of shear shallow water flows which takes into account a non-uniform horizontal velocity. This model generalizes the Green–Naghdi model to the case of shear flows. Besides the classical dispersion term in the Green–Naghdi model related to the acceleration of the free surface, it also contains a new dispersion parameter related to the flow structure. This parameter is related to the second moment of the velocity fluctuation with respect to the vertical coordinate. The distinction between shearing and turbulence based on the scale of variation of the velocity fluctuation is proposed. In particular, an equation for the turbulence generation is derived. Solitary waves for this model are obtained in explicit form. Comparison of solitary wave profiles with experimental ones is also performed. The agreement is very good apart from the small region near the top of the wave.

A conservative hyperbolic two-parameter model of shear shallow-water flows is used to study the classical turbulent hydraulic jump. The parameters of the model, which are the wall enstrophy and the roller dissipation coefficient, are determined from measurements of the roller length and the deviation from the Bélanger equation of the sequent depth ratio (experimental data by Hager & Bremen, J. Hydraul. Res., vol. 27, 1989, pp. 565–585; and Hager, Bremen & Kawagoshi, J. Hydraul. Res., vol. 28, 1990, pp. 591–608). Stationary solutions to the model describe with a good accuracy the free-surface profile of the hydraulic jump. The model is also capable of predicting the oscillations of the jump toe. We show that if the upstream Froude number is larger than ${\sim }1. 5$, the jump toe oscillates with a particular frequency, while for the Froude number smaller than 1.5 the solution becomes stationary. In particular, we show that for a given flow discharge, the oscillation frequency is a decreasing function of the Froude number.

We derive a mathematical model of shear flows of shallow water down an inclined plane. The non-dissipative part of the model is obtained by averaging the incompressible Euler equations over the fluid depth. The averaged equations are simplified in the case of weakly sheared flows. They are reminiscent of the compressible non-isentropic Euler equations where the flow enstrophy plays the role of entropy. Two types of enstrophies are distinguished: a small-scale enstrophy generated near the wall, and a large-scale enstrophy corresponding to the flow in the roller region near the free surface. The dissipation is then added in accordance with basic physical principles. The model is hyperbolic, the corresponding ‘sound velocity’ depends on the flow enstrophies. Periodic stationary solutions to this model describing roll waves were obtained. The solutions are in good agreement with the experimental profiles of roll waves measured in Brock’s experiments. In particular, the height of the vertical front of the waves, the shock thickness and the wave amplitude are well captured by the model.

A multiphase hyperbolic model for dynamic and irreversible powder compaction is built. Four important points have to be addressed in this case. The first one is related to the irreversible character of powder compaction. When a granular media is subjected to a loading–unloading cycle, the final volume is lower than the initial one. To deal with this hysteresis phenomenon, a multiphase model with relaxation is built. During loading, mechanical equilibrium is assumed corresponding to stiff mechanical relaxation, while during unloading non-equilibrium mechanical transformation is assumed. Consequently, the sound speed of the limit models are very different during loading and unloading. These differences in acoustic properties are responsible for irreversibility in the compaction process. The second point is related to dynamic effects, where pressure and shock waves play an important role. Wave dynamics is guaranteed by the hyperbolic character of the equations. Phase compressibility as well as configuration energy are taken into account. The third point is related to multi-dimensional situations that involve material interfaces. Indeed, most processes with powder compaction entail free surfaces. Consequently, the model should be able to solve interfaces separating pure fluids and granular mixtures. Finally, the fourth point is related to gas permeation that may play an important role in some specific powder compaction situations. This poses the difficult question of multiple-velocity description. These four points are considered in a unique model fitting the frame of multiphase theory of diffuse interfaces (Saurel & Abgrall, J. Comput. Phys., vol. 150, 1999, p. 425; Kapila et al., Phys. Fluids, vol. 13, 2001, p. 3002; Saurel et al., J. Comput. Phys., vol. 228, 2009, p. 1678). The ability of the model to deal with these various effects is validated on basic situations, where each phenomenon is considered separately. Except for the material EOS (hydrodynamic and granular pressures and energies), which are determined on the basis of separate experiments found in the literature, the model is free of adjustable parameter.

The conservation of mass, momentum and energy are not sufficient to close a system of jump relations for shocks propagating in a heterogeneous mixture of compressible fluids. We propose here a closed set of relations corresponding to a two-stage structure of shock fronts. At the first stage, microkinetic energy due to the relative motion of mixture components is produced at the shock front. At the second stage, this microkinetic energy disappears inducing strong variations in the thermodynamical states that reach mechanical equilibrium. The microkinetic energy produced at the shock front is estimated by using an idea developed earlier for turbulent shocks in compressible fluids. The relaxation zone between the shocked state and the equilibrium state is integrated over a thermodynamic path a justification of which is provided. Comparisons with experiments on shock propagation in a mixture of condensed materials confirm the proposed theory.

The simplest model of isotropic compressible turbulence consists of the Euler equations augmented by the equation for the turbulent energy. This model can also be viewed as the Euler equations for a continuum with two independent entropies. One of them is a conventional thermodynamic entropy, and the other is associated with the turbulent energy. The shock relations for this model are examined. It is shown that the turbulent entropy cannot exceed some critical value. We propose a closed set of Rankine–Hugoniot relations for the description of shock waves in such a medium based on this estimation.
