Research in judgment and decision making generally ignores the distinction between factual and subjective feelings of ownership, tacitly assuming that the two correspond closely. The present research suggests that this assumption might be usefully reexamined. In two experiments on the endowment effect we examine the role of subjective ownership by independently manipulating factual ownership (i.e., what participants were told about ownership) and physical possession of an object. This allowed us to disentangle the effects of these two factors, which are typically confounded. We found a significant effect of possession, but not of factual ownership, on monetary valuation of the object. Moreover, this effect was mediated by participants’ feelings of ownership, which were enhanced by the physical possession of the object. Thus, the endowment effect did not rely on factual ownership per se but was the result of subjective feelings of ownership induced by possession of the object. It is these feelings of ownership that appeared to lead individuals to include the object into their endowment and to shift their reference point accordingly. Potential implications and directions for future research are discussed.

Two experiments examined the impact on the decoy effect of making salient the possibility of post-decision regret, a manipulation that has been shown in several earlier studies to stimulate critical examination and improvement of decision process. Experiment 1 (N = 62) showed that making regret salient eliminated the decoy effect in a personal preference task. Experiment 2 (N = 242) replicated this finding for a different personal preference task and for a prediction task. It also replicated previous findings that external accountability demands do not reduce, and may exacerbate, the decoy effect. We interpret both effects in terms of decision justification, with different justification standards operating for different audiences. The decoy effect, in this account, turns on accepting a weak justification, which may be seen as adequate for an external audience or one’s own inattentive self but inadequate under the more critical review triggered by making regret possibilities salient. Seeking justification to others (responding to accountability demands) thus maintains or exacerbates the decoy effect; seeking justification to oneself (responding to regret salience) reduces or eliminates it. The proposed mechanism provides a theoretical account both of the decoy effect itself and of how regret priming provides an effective debiasing procedure for it.

Mercier and Sperber (M&S) argue that reasoning has evolved primarily as an adjunct to persuasive communication rather than as a basis for consequential choice. Recent research on decision-related regret suggests that regret aversion and concomitant needs for justification may underpin a complementary mechanism that can, if appropriately deployed, convert M&S's facile arguer into an effective decision maker, with obvious evolutionary advantages.

The base rate fallacy is directly dependent on a particular judgment paradigm in which information may be unambiguously designated as either “base rate” or “individuating,” and in which subjects make two-stage sequential judgments. The paradigm may be a poor match for real world settings, and the fallacy may thus be undefined for natural ecologies of judgment.

Regret is often symptomatic of the defective decisions associated with “temporary preference” problems. It may also help overcome these defects. Outcome regret can modify the relative utilities of different payoffs. Process regret can motivate search for better decision processes or trap-evading strategies. Heightened regret may thus be functional for control of these self-defeating choices.

Summary
Introduction
Naturalistic decision making (NDM) is gaining some currency as a label for a loose grouping of nonstandard models of individual decision making. These models, although very different from one another, all address the descriptive inadequacies of the classical, subjective expected utility (SEU) view of economic rationality and its closer descendants, such as prospect theory (Kahneman & Tversky, 1979) and generalized utility theory (Camerer, 1992). Continuing work within the SEU tradition is essentially conservative, aiming to preserve the important achievements of the theory while adding modifications to accommodate the most embarrassing empirical violations. NDM theories, in contrast, are generally more radical. They conceive of decision making in ways quite different from SEU theory.
The source of this radicalism is simple: SEU theory appears to offer little descriptive purchase on a broad range of everyday decision phenomena. Decisions are frequently made under time pressure, precluding the sorts of careful balancing and computation SEU implies. Decisions are made in dynamic, uncertain, or ambiguous environments, making the notion of an “expectation” problematic. Goals and preferences may be unclear, making notions of stable, known utilities hard to apply. There may be multiple participants, with shifting roles as collaborators, advisors, or opponents. (See Orasanu and Connolly, 1993, for a sample of this critical literature.) Because observations of organizational contexts suggest that these complicating factors are often present, NDM takes organizational decision making as a primary domain of application.
