Note: Addison’s hymn, based on Psalm 23, had appeared in Spectator 441 (Saturday, 26 July 1712). Gottsched sent her translation to Johann Christoph Gottsched on 10 November 1734. It was published in Luise Gottsched, Briefe, ed. Dorothea von Runckel, 3 vols. (Dresden: Harpeter, 1771–72), 1:160–61.

Source text: Madeleine de Scudéry, Les Bains de Thermopyle

Note: Les Bains de Thermopyle had first appeared as an episode in Scudéry’s novel Artamène ou le Grand Cyrus (1649–53) and was reprinted in the Conversations sur divers sujets (1680) before being reissued as a stand-alone work in 1732. Gottsched had a copy of the 1732 edition in her library. She mentioned that she had begun and then abandoned the translation in a letter to Johann Christoph on 1 December 1734.
