Zircon U–Pb dating, whole-rock major oxide, trace element and Sr–Nd isotopic data are presented for the Late Mesozoic mafic intrusive rocks from Yiwulüshan of western Liaoning along the eastern segment of the Yanshan belt, North China craton, with two episodes of magmatism documented. Middle Jurassic hornblende-rich gabbros show enrichment of large ion lithophile elements and light REE, and prominent depletion in high field strength elements, and possess moderately enriched isotopic compositions with (87Sr/86Sr)i ranging from 0.7056 to 0.7065 and ɛNd(t) from −5.0 to −7.1. These features suggest that the gabbros were derived from an amphibole-bearing harzburgitic lithospheric mantle source metasomatized recently by slab-derived fluids. By contrast, Early Cretaceous mafic dykes are gabbroic dioritic to dioritic in composition, with comparable trace element characteristics to continental crust and depleted isotopic signatures ((87Sr/86Sr)i = 0.7048–0.7055, ɛNd(t) = 0 to −3.0). They probably originated from partial melting of a relatively fertile asthenospheric mantle in the spinel stability field, with subsequent lower crustal assimilation and fractional crystallization. These two contrasting mafic intrusive suites, together with multiple Mesozoic mafic volcanic rocks from western Liaoning, documented a localized lithospheric thinning process, mainly through prolonged hydro-weakening or melt–rock interaction and triggered by gravitational collapse, possibly within an evolved post-collisional to within-plate extensional regime.

Two deformational events which developed prior to the Variscan structures can be characterized in the Palaeozoic rocks of the Pyrenees: a Middle (?) Ordovician folding event and a Late Ordovician fracture episode. The Middle (?) Ordovician folding event gives rise to NW–SE- to N–S-oriented, metric- to hectometric-sized folds, without cleavage formation or related metamorphism. These folds can account for the deformation and uplift of the pre-Upper Ordovician (Cambro-Ordovician) sequence and for the formation of the Upper Ordovician unconformity. Ordovician folds control the orientation of the Variscan main-folding-phase minor structures, fold axes and intersection lineation in the Cambro-Ordovician sediments. The Late Ordovician fracture episode gave rise to normal faults affecting the lower part of the Upper Ordovician series, the basal unconformity and the underlying Cambro-Ordovician metasediments. Displacement of some of these faults diminishes progressively upwards of the series and tapers off in the upper part of the Upper Ordovician rocks, indicating that the faults became inactive during Late Ordovician times before deposition of the Ashgillian metasediments. Normal faults can be linked to the Upper Ordovician volcanic activity, which has been extensively described in the Pyrenees. The aforementioned deformation episodes took place after the Early Ordovician magmatic event, which gave rise to a large volume of plutonic rocks in the Pyrenees as in other segments of the European Variscides. This Middle Ordovician contractional event separated two extensional events in the Pyrenees from Early Ordovician to Silurian times. This event prevents us from assuming the existence of a continuous extensional regime through Ordovician and Silurian times, and suggests a more complex evolution of this segment of the northern Gondwana margin during the Ordovician.

The diamictites of the Neoproterozoic Kapp Lyell Sequence in northern Wedel Jarlsberg Land, southwest Spitsbergen, have long been recognized as ancient glacial deposits, but their place within the global stratigraphic framework of ‘snowball Earth’ has remained unclear, owing to the complexity of superimposed Caledonian deformation and to the relatively inaccessible terrain in which they occur. Recently deglaciated exposures of the rocks now provide a more complete picture of the changing environment in which the diamictites were deposited, and new understanding of regional correlations help constrain their place in the global chronostratigraphy of the Cryogenian Period. The 2500 m thick Kapp Lyell Sequence consists of three distinct types of glaciomarine diamictite. The succession begins with about 1000 m of finely laminated diamictite containing abundant lonestones. The millimetre- to centimetre-scale laminae, apparent suspension deposits, consist of sand- to silt-sized particles of quartz and dolomite alternating with thin films of graphitic phyllite. The laminated unit gives way abruptly to 500–1000 m of unsorted, unlayered diamictite that alternates and interfingers with graded beds of conglomerate to sandstone. These apparent turbidite deposits become increasingly prevalent toward the top of the exposed section. Regional lithostratigraphic relationships suggest that the Kapp Lyell sequence corresponds to the second major stage of Neoproterozoic glaciation at c. 635 Ma. The graphitic material in the laminated unit yields δ13C values in the range of −20 to −22 ‰, pointing to a biogenic origin and an active marine biosphere at the time of deposition. The preservation of organic carbon and unusually large ratios of highly reactive Fe to total Fe suggest that low oxygen conditions prevailed in the deep basin that received these sediments. The transition from laminated, to unsorted, to graded diamictites may represent change from (1) a stable ice margin that released rare icebergs into a deep, quiet basin to (2) a collapsing ice sheet that unleashed flotillas of icebergs and large volumes of sediment to (3) submarine landslides that triggered turbidity flows from the rapidly deposited, gravitationally unstable sediments. The Kapp Lyell diamictite sequence appears to chronicle the demise of a large ice mass in this part of the Neoproterozoic world.

The Mesozoic Austral Basin of Patagonia, in southwestern Gondwana, experienced a major tectonic segmentation during Aptian times. Sometime between 121 and 118 Ma (Aptian), the northern part of the Austral Basin, known as the Aisén Basin or Río Mayo Embayment, was inverted, with the sediments overlain by calc-alkaline subaerial volcanic rocks of Aptian to Maastrichtian age. In the southern segment of the Austral Basin, known as the Magallanes Basin, predominantly marine sediments accumulated until Cenozoic times in a back-arc position, relative to a magmatic arc located to the west. The subduction-related N–S-trending volcanic chains of both segments were geographically displaced during Aptian to Late Cretaceous times. In the Aisén segment north of ~49–50° S, the volcanic chain was located further east than the coeval arc in the Magallanes segment. A transform fault connected the trenches of both segments, with the Aisén segment dipping at a shallower angle than the Magallanes segment.

The palaeoproterozoic Svecofennian orogen in southern Finland contains a number of orogenic gold occurrences. The Jokisivu gold deposit, comprising auriferous quartz veins, is hosted by syn-tectonic quartz diorites to gabbros. Mineralization occurs in approximately WNW–ESE- and WSW–ENE-trending shear zones, which probably branch from regional-scale NW–SE-trending shears. Ore zone fabrics post-date regional-scale folding and the metamorphic peak, and can be correlated with late Svecofennian regional shear tectonics (D6; 1.83–1.78 Ga), indicating that mineralization formed during the late stages of orogenic evolution. SIMS and TIMS U–Pb dating of three samples place tight constraints on the age of gold mineralization. Zircons from both unaltered and altered quartz diorites have ages of 1884±4 Ma and 1881±3 Ma, respectively. These are interpreted as the crystallization age of the rock and as providing the maximum age for mineralization. Zircon rims from an altered quartz diorite from the ore zone give ages of c. 1802±15 Ma, which overlap with the 1801±18 Ma titanite (mean Pb–Pb) age from the ore zone. The ages are similar to the age of the pegmatite dyke that cuts the ore zone and whose zircon age of 1807±3 Ma is approximately the same as the 1791±2 Ma monazite age (TIMS) giving the minimum age of the gold mineralization. The mineralization and its structural framework can be correlated with coeval late Svecofennian shear tectonics related to WNW–ESE-oriented shortening in southern Finland. Extensive c. 1.8 Ga granite magmatism, shear zone development and associated gold mineralization are of regional importance also in the northern and western Fennoscandian Shield (Finnish Lapand and Sweden). A Cordilleran-type setting can explain the widespread distribution of magmatism and gold mineralization associated with shortening, as well as the required heat source triggering hydrothermal fluid flow along shear zones.

Analyses of sulphur isotope compositions in sedimentary pyrites from the Vindhyan, Chattisgarh and Cuddapah basins show heavy δ34S (> +25 ‰) values during the Mesoproterozoic. The data provide evidence in support of a hypothesized global Proterozoic sulphidic anoxic ocean where very low concentrations of marine sulphate, bacterially reduced in closed systems, produced δ34S values in pyrites similar to or even heavier than marine sulphate. The extreme environmental conditions induced by these anoxic oceans could have been responsible for the delayed oxygenation of the biosphere and retarded evolution of multicellular life.

Trilobites from the upper unit of the Lower Cambrian Pusa Formation (south-central Spain) substantially antedate other Iberian trilobites, according to widely published correlation schemes, and arguably would be among the earliest trilobites globally. These trilobites, previously only briefly mentioned in texts, are here described and illustrated, and their biochronological context examined. The Pusa Formation trilobites are treated in open nomenclature but with suggested affinity to the genus Abadiella. They are associated with small shelly fossils, including Pelagiella sp., chancellorid spicules and Cupitheca sp., and unidentfied archaeocyathans. Trace fossils from the upper unit of the Pusa Formation, down-section of the trilobites, include Dactyloidites isp. and Rusophycus isp., the latter representing the lowest occurrence of this ichnogenus in the region. This biostratigraphical context demonstrates that the Pusa Formation trilobites are substantially younger than had traditionally been thought. In terms of Iberian regional stages they are Ovetian, not Corduban as previously thought. As a consequence of the data presented here, the definitions of Iberian Lower Cambrian regional stages are discussed and a substantially revised correlation between key Lower Cambrian strata of the Central Iberian and Ossa Morena zones is proposed.

We integrate the different contemporary sources together with new field data on the pyroclastic deposits to make a new volcanological reconstruction of the explosive phases of the 1944 Vesuvius eruption. We adopt the four successive phases of the eruption first defined by Imbò (1945), who made the most detailed contemporary description of the eruption: Phase 1 – effusive, Phase 2 – lava fountains, Phase 3 – mixed explosions and Phase 4 – seismic-explosive. Phase 1 consisted of four days of effusive activity. Phase 2 generated eight successive lava fountains which formed agglutinated spatter in a restricted area around the crater. At distances of > 1 km from the crater, reverse graded, well-sorted, scoria lapilli with up to 94 wt % juvenile material and calculations indicate a volume of 8.2 × 106 m3 DRE (Dense Rock Equivalent) for Phase 2. A short pause in scoria fallout was observed that coincides with the transition between Phases 2 and 3 of the eruption. On the crater rim there is clear evidence for the different phases, owing to the stratification of the deposits; however, away from the crater, stratigraphic breaks suggesting any discontinuity in the eruptive activity are absent. The beginning of Phase 3 is marked by the appearance of abundant dense scoria fragments, coincident with the coarsest part of the lapilli. High-density scoria forms 10 wt % of juvenile material in Phase 2, increasing to 45% in the upper part of Phase 3. Isopach maps derived from field measurements indicate a mean volume of 40.2 × 106 m3 DRE for Phase 3. Distal ash, mainly formed during Phase 3, was dispersed to the SE as far as Albania, and calculations yield a volume of 102 × 106 m3 DRE. Intermittent activity associated with Phase 4 generated ash-rich plumes dispersed towards the SW and contemporary thickness descriptions yield a bulk volume of 4.2 × 106 m3 (2.5 × 106 m3 DRE). Small pyroclastic density currents (PDCs) were observed during Phases 3 and 4. The deposits (200 m from the crater rim) of these currents have been identified on the flanks of the cone. Thin, massive and poorly sorted ash layers, that occur up to 2.5 km from the crater rim, are interpreted to represent the distal facies of these PDCs. Mass discharge rate (MDR) estimates for the paroxysmal phase (end of Phase 2 and start of Phase 3) of this event are around 3.5 × 106 kg/s, however, this increases to > 107 kg/s if the mass of distal ash is taken into account. Column height estimates from fallout isopleths associated with the eruption's paroxysmal phase are > 10 km. Based on the contemporaneous chronicles, we were able to define the type and extent of damage associated with the different styles (or temporal phases) of the eruption. Our calculations demonstrate that the present-day population at risk has doubled compared to 1944. The contemporaneous (and also subsequent) scientific literature underestimated the magnitude and intensity of this eruption and very little attention has been dedicated to the damage that occurred. We suggest that this is at least partly related to the extensive destruction of Neapolitan area and the deaths of tens of thousands of civilians related to the Second World War.

The lower–middle Cambrian transitional interval of Scania is largely represented by condensed limestone beds, lithostratigraphically grouped in the Gislöv Formation (1–5.7 m thick), and the Forsemölla and Exsulans Limestone beds (lower part of the Alum Shale Formation, up to 4 m thick). The strata display a combination of skeletal carbonate productivity, episodic nucleation of phosphate hardground nodules, and polyphase reworking recorded on a platform bordering the NW corner of Baltica. The shell accumulations can be subdivided into three deepening-upward parasequences, separated by distinct erosive unconformities. The parasequences correspond biostratigraphically to the Holmia kjerulfi, Ornamentaspis? linnarssoni and Ptychagnostus gibbus zones, the latter two generally being separated by a stratigraphic gap that includes the middle Cambrian Acadoparadoxides oelandicus Superzone. Except for the Exsulans Limestone, the carbonates reflect development of a prolific epibenthic biota, dominated by filter-feeding nonreefal chancelloriid–echinoderm–sponge meadows, rich in trilobites and brachiopods, and which were subjected to high-energy conditions. The absence of microbial mats or veneers encrusting the erosive surfaces of these event-concentration low-relief shoal complexes may be related to long hiatal episodes resulting in microboring proliferation. High levels of nutrient supply resulted in high primary productivity, eutrophic conditions, glauconite precipitation, phosphogenesis (in some case microbially mediated) and microendolithic infestation. An early-diagenetic mildly reducing environment is suggested by the presence of authigenic (subsequently reworked) pyrite, which contrasts with the syndepositional normal oxygenated conditions reflected by macroburrowing and the abundance of benthic fossils.

Recent field work in the southern Moroccan Sahara (‘Western Sahara’), south of the city of ad-Dakhla, has led to the discovery of several new fossiliferous sites with fossil vertebrates in sedimentary deposits previously reported for the Mio-Pliocene. The sedimentology and geological setting of the studied area are briefly reported here, and at least three units have been identified in successive stratigraphical sequences according to their fossil content. The first preliminary list of vertebrate associations is reported and consists mainly of isolated teeth belonging to selachian and bony fishes, a proboscidean tooth currently assigned to ?Numidotherium sp. and many remains of archaeocete whales (Basilosauridae). At least 48 species of selachians are presently identified; many of them are new and others are recorded in the late Middle Eocene (Bartonian) and Late Eocene (Priabonian) of Wadi Al-Hitan (Egypt) or Wadi Esh-Shallala Formation (Jordan) as in other African localities (e.g. Otodus cf. sokolowi, ‘Cretolamna’ twiggsensis, Xiphodolamia serrata, Misrichthys stromeri, Hemipristis curvatus, Galeocerdo cf. eaglesomi, Propristis schweinfurthi), probably indicating a Late Eocene age for unit 2 of the bedrock successions. The evolutionary trend noticeable on the proboscidean tooth is in agreement with such an assumption, by comparison with the close relative species known from the Eocene of Egypt, Libya and Algeria. Indeed, the faunal associations from the Dakhla area clearly demonstrate the erroneous age of these deposits, previously thought to be Mio-Pliocene. It suggests a correlation in age (late Middle Eocene–Late Eocene) and a similar environment with the famous marine deposits from Egypt and Jordan. It opens new opportunities to understand the biogeography and the surprising similarity of landscape between West and Northeast Africa during the Bartonian–Priabonian period.

The Jiuhuashan–Qingyang complex is one of the Mesozoic granite complexes in the NE Yangzte Block, China. New petrographical and petrochemical data show that the complex comprises a dominant granodiorite–monzogranite, the Qingyang body, which was intruded by the Jiuhuashan granite body. The two are characterized by distinct mineral components and trace element patterns. Compared to the Qingyang granodiorite and monzogranite, the Jiuhuashan granite is enriched in Rb, Th, U, Nb, Ta, Hf, Yb and Lu, and depleted in Ba, Sr, Nd, Sm, Eu, Gd and Ti, which are ascribable to the separation of plagioclase and biotite, and crystallization of thorite and fergusonite during the magmatism. New LA-ICPMS zircon U–Pb dating suggests that the crystallization age of the Qingyang body is 139–133 Ma, and the Jiuhuashan granite followed at 127 Ma. Moreover, the new zircon U–Pb dates reveal that Archaean materials were involved in the formation of these magmas, and that a sodium-rich metasomatic event occurred at about 100 Ma. The CHIME monazite and zircon ages studied for the Jiuhuashan body agree well with the LA-ICPMS zircon ages. Integrating this information with previous studies for granites in the NE Yangtze Block and in the coastal area of SE China, we believe that all of these Late Mesozoic granites were produced under the tectonic regime of palaeo-Pacific plate subduction towards the SE China continent in a NW direction, but the granites in the NE Yangtze Block are basically derived by crustal melting with limited mixing of juvenile material during the magma generation.

Myotragus palomboi n.sp. (Artiodactyla, Caprinae) is described from the Early Pliocene of Mallorca (Balearic Islands, western Mediterranean). This species is the earliest representative of the Myotragus lineage known to date in the Balearic Islands. A metatarsal, and several teeth and postcranial remains were found in a karstic deposit located on the east coast of the island, near Caló den Rafelino (Manacor), together with remains of Hypolagus, two rodent species, an insectivore and several reptiles. The metatarsal and phalanges of the new bovid are short and robust and display a combination of characters only observed in Myotragus. The presence of a larger p2, a metatarsal robustness index lower than in M. pepgonellae (the earliest known species to date), together with the morphology of the incisors, all suggest that M. palomboi should be considered as the ancestor of M. pepgonellae. Short metapodials and the reduction of p2 displayed by M. palomboi could be linked to a first stage of evolution in insular conditions. The arrival of this bovid to the island of Mallorca probably took place during the Mediterranean Messinian Salinity Crisis (Late Miocene, 5.6–5.32 Ma ago). Although the relationship of the new taxon to other fossil caprines cannot be definitively established, it could be phylogenetically close to the Late Miocene European species Aragoral mudejar and Norbertia hellenica.

The large Variscan Karkonosze Granite in the West Sudetes, representative of the vast Variscan granite plutonism in Central Europe and located adjacent to regional tectonic suture and strike-slip-zones, has been difficult to date precisely; a range of published data varies between c. 304 and 328 Ma. However, the granite is cut by locally numerous lamprophyre and other dykes. Dating of the dyke rocks, emplaced shortly after the granite intrusion and cooled more rapidly, provides a promising tool for the verification of published SHRIMP results on the granite itself. SHRIMP zircon geochronology of a studied micromonzodiorite dyke indicates substantial admixture of inherited zircons of c. 2.0, 1.4 Ga (207Pb–206Pb minimum ages), and c. 570 (and 500?) Ma. The average concordia age of the main magmatic population of the zircons in the dyke is 313 ± 3 Ma (2σ); however, the true magmatic age might be older, around 318 Ma. This would constrain the age of the hypabyssal magmatism in the Karkonosze Massif and the minimum age of the host Karkonosze Granite. Thus, the Karkonosze Granite is confirmed as representative of an early phase of Variscan granite plutonic activity in the central-European Variscides.

In the abstract and caption to Figure 6a of the above publication (Jensen, Palacios & Martí Mus, 2010), ‘Rusophycus isp.’ should read ‘Rusophycus cf. avalonensis’.

The Palaeontinidae (Insecta: Cicadomorpha) from the Upper Jurassic Solnhofen Limestone of Bavaria are revised. The diagnostic characters for three monotypic genera Eocicada Oppenheim, 1888, Prolystra Oppenheim, 1888 and Archipsyche Handlirsch, 1906 are reassessed based on newly discovered material. Beloptesis gigantea (Weyenbergh, 1874), B. oppenheimi Handlirsch, 1906, Limacodites mesozoicus Handlirsch, 1906, and Protopsyche braueri Handlirsch, 1906 are considered to be junior synonyms of Prolystra lithographica Oppenheim, 1888. Eocicada lameerei Handlirsch, 1908 is a junior synonym of E. microcephala Oppenheim, 1888. A key to the species of Solnhofen Palaeontinidae is presented. Solnhofen Palaeontinidae and most Cretaceous Palaeontinidae most probably form a monophyletic group based on the following characters: costal area narrow, vein RA branching from stem R basally, vein ScP not fused with vein RA, clavus much reduced and hindwing smaller. Furthermore, Solnhofen Palaeontinidae are probably basal to Cretaceous Palaeontinidae by the mesonotum lacking distinct longitudinal carinae. A fast succession from early to more derived Palaeontinidae took place during Late Jurassic times. Early Palaeontinidae declined sharply in the Late Jurassic, probably owing to the rise of newly evolved insectivorous animals like early birds and mammals. Late Palaeontinidae with better flight ability survived and became a dominant insect group during latest Jurassic times.

New U–Pb sensitive high-mass resolution ion microprobe (SHRIMP) data from detrital zircons within the Orlica–Śnieżnik Dome provide new insights into the stratigraphic and palaeogeographic position of assumed relict Precambrian basement preserved in the Variscan collisional orogen of the West Sudetes, SW Poland. Hitherto, the Młynowiec Formation and the Stronie Formation within the Orlica–Śnieżnik Dome were assumed to represent two metavolcano-sedimentary successions of Proterozoic and early Palaeozoic age, respectively. However, when previous U–Pb data and mapping data from the Orlica–Śnieżnik Dome are combined with the new detrital zircon isotopic ages both from paragneisses within the Młynowiec Formation and from light-coloured quartzites and mica schists within the Stronie Formation, the result strongly suggests that the protoliths of these two formations actually form a continuous succession. This continuous succession is herein designated the Młynowiec–Stronie Group. The rocks of this group were deposited during middle Cambrian–early Ordovician times (c. 520–470 Ma), presumably at the northern edge of West Gondwana after the 10–20 Ma period of tectonic quiescence that followed the terminal stage of the Cadomian collisions. Monotonous Młynowiec metagreywackes form the lower part of the succession, and the lithologically diverse schistose Stronie Formation forms its upper part. The change from greywacke (Młynowiec) to volcano-sedimentary (Stronie) facies coincided with the onset of rather short-lived volcanic activity which climaxed around 505–495 Ma and which supplied the volcanogenic components to the Stronie Formation. No ‘Cadomian unconformity’ has been observed in the region. Xenocrystic zircons from the Młynowiec–Stronie Group retain records of Archaean (3.0–2.3 Ga), Palaeoproterozoic (2.1–1.8 Ga) and Neoproterozoic to early Cambrian (660–530 Ma) zircon-forming events. These zircon ages, together with the lack of 1.7–1.2 Ga zircon ages, suggest that the source areas for the metasedimentary rocks may have been the West Africa craton, which therefore differs from the Amazonian affinity of the adjacent Brunovistulia Terrane. Nevertheless, two zircons, c. 1.0 and 1.1 Ga old, respectively, indicate that the Młynowiec–Stronie Group sedimentary basin must have still been within the delivery reach of detritus ultimately derived from the Grenvillian-age belt(s). The detrital components of the supracrustal formations of the Orlica–Śnieżnik Dome were mainly derived from Neoproterozoic zircon-bearing crystalline rocks that were accreted to, and included in, the Cadomian basement in several intrusive pulses that culminated at 660–640 Ma, 620 Ma and 570–530 Ma.

Ultrapotassic plutons from several domains of the Variscan orogenic belt have been in turn interpreted as syn- to post-orogenic due to their age spread, but assessment of their geodynamic setting and source regions is still open to interpretation. In the Svoge region (Bulgaria), at the southern margin of the Balkan orogen, peralkalic plutons are hosted within Ordovician pelites. The main intrusion, with lamproitic affinity, which hosts monzodiorite xenoliths and a polyphase syenite suite, was emplaced at a shallow level. 40Ar–39Ar dating by step-heating of amphibole and biotite yielded a Early Carboniferous intrusion age for the main body (337 ± 4 and 339.1 ± 1.6 Ma). The lamproite intrusion is silica-rich compared with bona fide lamproites and characterized by moderate LILE and LaN/YbN enrichments. Sr and Nd isotopic data (initial ϵNd in the range −4.87 to −5.88) suggest an origin in a depleted lithospheric mantle, possibly refertilized by eo-Variscan subduction. The high-K syn-tectonic plutonism in several zones of the Variscan orogen (Bohemian, Austro-Alpine, Vosges, French and Corsica domains) is consistent with a derivation of high-K magmatism from partial melting of metasomatized mantle following the subduction along the collision front between Gondwana and Laurasia.

Phosphatized articulated palaeoscolecid scleritome fragments with attached Hadimopanella Gedik, 1977 plates are described from the lower Cambrian Mernmerna Formation of South Australia. Hadimopanella is principally known from single, isolated, button-shaped, phosphatic sclerites. The new articulated material from South Australia reveals for the first time the configuration of plates referable to Hadimopanella within the scleritome. The scleritome fragments represent the main trunk sections of the cuticle with anterior and posterior terminations lacking. Each annulus on the trunk is ornamented by rows of irregularly alternating Hadimopanella plates. The large majority of plates display a single, centrally located, conical node referable to the form species H. apicata Wrona, 1982. However, individual plates display considerable morphological variation with plates situated along the flattened trunk margin identical to the form species H. antarctica Wrona, 1987. The South Australian material displays the detailed scleritome configuration of cuticular plates and platelets and demonstrates irrefutably that plates of the form species H. apicata and H. antarctica occur as mineralized cuticular elements on the same palaeoscolecid scleritome.

Silicic volcanism at c. 168 Ma has been identified previously on the Antarctic Peninsula, and the Mapple Formation, which includes those volcanic rocks, has been defined and documented from one area of the east coast of Graham Land. Based on age and geochemical criteria, correlations have been made to the extensive Chon Aike Province of South America, which has been demonstrated to be one of the largest silicic volcanic provinces in the world. Rhyolitic and intermediate composition volcanic successions from six separate localities on the east coast of the Antarctic Peninsula are described here and are confirmed as correlatives of the Mapple Formation, based on newly acquired geochronology and field observations. They are dominantly rhyolitic crystal tuffs and/or ignimbrites with ages in the interval 162–168 Ma, overlapping with the age of the Mapple Formation (167–171 Ma) at the type locality. Andesitic agglomerates are also described, which are included in the same event and demonstrate the occurrence of rare intermediate volcanism, which is also seen in the Chon Aike Province. A new group, the Graham Land Volcanic Group, is defined here, and criteria are established which allow the separation of some volcanic successions out of the previously defined Antarctic Peninsula Volcanic Group, which takes no account of tectonic setting, eruption age or geochemistry.

Potassium–argon (K–Ar) ages on whole rock samples have been measured on lavas from the subaerial Samoa Islands, which form a broadly linear volcanic chain that extends from the ESE to the WNW for about 360 km. The Manu'a Islands near the southeast limit of the chain exhibit youthful ages, with most <0.4 Ma, in keeping with the geological observations. Tutuila consists of several volcanoes, and previous work yielded a mean K–Ar age of 1.26 ± 0.15 Ma for the shield-building volcanism. Upolu, to the WNW of Tutuila, gives a mean age of 2.15 ± 0.35 Ma for the shield-building phase, represented by the Fagaloa Volcanics, with much of the island covered by significantly younger volcanic rocks. Savai'i, further to the WNW, is dominated by youthful volcanism, extending into historic times. In a restricted area, adjacent to the NE coast of Savai'i, previously thought to have volcanic rocks correlating with the Fagaloa Volcanics of Upolu, the ages are much younger than those on Upolu, lying between 0.32 and 0.42 Ma. Considering only the subaerial volcanism from Ta'u to Upolu, but also including Vailulu'u, the volcanism has migrated in a systematic ESE direction at 130 ± 8 mm a−1 over 300 km in the last 2.2 Ma. This rate is nearly twice that obtained from GPS measurements of Pacific Plate motion of 72 mm a−1 at N64°W in this area. However, if the much older age of shield-building volcanism from the submarine foundations of Savai'i is included, the regression yields a volcanic migration rate of 72 ± 14 mm a−1, in keeping with the measured GPS rate and consistent with a hotspot origin for the island chain. This suggests that the volcanic migration rates determined from the age of subaerial volcanism can be considerably overestimated, and this is now evident in other Pacific Ocean island chains. Clearly, the ages of the main shield-building volcanism from subaerial volcanism are minima, and if the older submarine lavas can be measured, these may yield a migration rate more in keeping with current plate motions.
