Summary
Perinatal mental illnesses are common and carry significant morbidity for the mother and infant, the family and wider society. Suicide remains a leading cause of maternal death. Pregnancy, childbirth and the transition into parenthood presents a unique life stage where a combination of physical, biological and psychological stressors can leave many women vulnerable to developing perinatal mental illness. This is a time where individuals often reflect on their own experiences of parenting and early life trauma can be reactivated. In addition, there is now consistent evidence that perinatal mental illness is not confined to maternal mental health problems. Approximately 10% of fathers experience postnatal depression and a recent study by the National Childbirth Trust has shown that 38% of all first-time fathers are concerned about their mental health.
The perinatal period is a time in a family’s life when they are in contact with many health professionals.
29 Smoking as a Risk Factor: Altered Brain Activity in Areas Associated with Preclinical Alzheimer's Disease

Objective:
Those at genetic risk for Alzheimer's Disease (AD) because of the ApoE ε4 allele show differences in activation during olfactory information processing and memory in areas such as MTL structures, entorhinal cortex, posterior cingulate, precuneus, and inferior parietal lobule, suggesting preclinical AD neuropathology and olfactory impairment as a biomarker for predicting later AD onset (Murphy, 2019). The effects of smoking on AD have varied, with early studies suggesting either no effect or protective effects, and recent studies suggesting smoking as a risk factor for AD but with the need for further investigation in preclinical stages. Therefore, this study focused on olfaction and smoking as risk factors for preclinical AD neuropathology by studying differences in fMRI BOLD signal changes in smokers and nonsmokers during olfactory tasks.
Participants and Methods:Archival data from 25 non-demented older adults recruited from the UCSD Alzheimer's Disease Research Center who completed an Assessment Scale-Cognitive Subscale (ADAS-Cog) and functional MRI scans at 3T, acquired during performance of an odor identification task. Odor Identification (OI) measured correct (hits) or incorrect (misses) identification of odors presented by an olfactometer to deliver the odor stimuli in short, controlled durations during fMRI scanning.
Results:fMRI data were preprocessed using fMRIprep, smoothed at 4mm, scaled, and first level analyses were conducted using 3dDeconvolve in AFNI with time points corresponding to hits and misses as regressors. Differences between smokers and nonsmokers revealed smokers show a larger difference in BOLD signal change from hits minus misses at five significant clusters (p = 0.01 with the minimum cluster size [voxels] at 42). Peak areas of significant clusters included the right precuneus, right calcarine gyrus, left inferior parietal lobule, left superior parietal lobule, and left middle occipital gyrus. Analyses suggested a greater difference in activity between hits and misses in smokers compared to nonsmokers, with more activity during hits.
Conclusions:Differences in activation between smokers and nonsmokers during an olfactory identification task, with greater activity in smokers during hits, suggests greater effort to correctly identify an odor. These findings of hyperactivation in areas (such as the precuneus and inferior parietal lobule) are similar to findings of hyperactivation during odor memory observed in studies of ε4 carriers during preclinical stages. Results provide further insight into smoking as a risk factor for AD. Moreover, results suggest the risk of smoking could potentially be reflected in altered activity in olfactory information processing networks in preclinical stages of AD. The study highlights the need for research to further understand the role smoking plays in the development of AD and the use of olfaction as a biomarker to aid in disease detection, prevention, and stage-associated treatments.

We conducted research to evaluate various herbicides for POST false-green kyllinga control in cool-season turfgrass (primarily creeping bentgrass). In a preliminary evaluation, single and sequential applications of halosulfuron-methyl (70 g ai ha−1), mesotrione (175 g ai ha−1), and sulfentrazone (140 g ai ha−1), as well as a single application of imazosulfuron (740 g ai ha−1), were evaluated in New Jersey. Imazosulfuron and sequential applications of halosulfuron-methyl controlled false-green kyllinga >93% at 9 and 18 wk after initial treatment (WAIT). Sulfentrazone and mesotrione controlled false-green kyllinga <50%. Additional experiments were conducted to evaluate single and sequential applications of halosulfuron-methyl (70 g ha−1), imazosulfuron (420 and 740 g ha−1), and sulfentrazone (140 g ha−1) in New Jersey and Indiana at two locations in each state. At 12 WAIT, imazosulfuron generally controlled false-green kyllinga more effectively than other treatments at all locations. Sequential applications of imazosulfuron controlled false-green kyllinga 100% at 12 WAIT. Halosulfuron-methyl was less effective in Indiana than in New Jersey. Sulfentrazone controlled false-green kyllinga <40% at 12 WAIT. This research demonstrates that imazosulfuron is more effective than halosulfuron-methyl and sulfentrazone for POST false-green kyllinga control in cool-season turf.

Summary
Endophytes have the potential to contribute to the sustainable production of bioenergy crops such as the perennial rhizomatous grass Miscanthus. They can improve plant growth on marginal land that is otherwise unsuitable for conventional agriculture and can also reduce the need for environmentally damaging chemical inputs including fertilisers and pesticides. This chapter outlines current knowledge of Miscanthus endophytes and presents new data on the diversity of root and shoot fungal endophytes isolated from three Miscanthus species (M. sacchariflorus, M. sinensis and M. ×giganteus). Malt extract, potato dextrose and Czapek Dox media were compared for isolation and growth of the endophytes. The endophytes were then identified using DNA barcoding with three DNA loci (nrITS, nrLSU and TEF). nrITS and nrLSU were found to be the most reliable and consistent barcoding regions. Internal transcribed spacer (ITS) had the highest discriminating potential and is thus recommended for single locus barcoding of endophytes in Miscanthus. Most new isolates were Ascomycota belonging to Pezizomycotina with representatives from Dothideomycetes, Eurotiomycetes and Sordariomycetes. One Basidiomycota species was recovered (a known soil yeast Rhodotorula). Comparisons between Miscanthus endophyte species composition and its better-known sister genus Saccharum (including sugarcane) are provided.
Characterizing circumnuclear starbursts in the local universe with the VLA

Nuclear rings are excellent laboratories to study star formation (SF) under extreme conditions. We compiled a sample of 9 galaxies that exhibit bright nuclear rings at 3-33 GHz radio continuum observed with the Jansky Very Large Array, of which 5 are normal star-forming galaxies and 4 are Luminous Infrared Galaxies (LIRGs). Using high frequency radio continuum as an extinction-free tracer of SF, we estimated the size and star formation rate of each nuclear ring and a total of 37 individual circumnuclear star-forming regions. Our results show that majority of the SF in the sample LIRGs take place in their nuclear rings, and circumnuclear SF in local LIRGs are much more spatially concentrated compared to those in the local normal galaxies and previously studied nuclear and extra-nuclear SF in normal galaxies at both low and high redshifts.

Summary
INTRODUCTION
The oil and gas sector is recognised as being at risk of corrupt practices. Some of the largest fines for bribery and corruption globally have related to the activities of oil and gas companies.
This chapter provides an overview of key anti-bribery and corruption (ABC) legislation and conventions that affect the oil and gas sector. It analyses the primary challenges and concerns affecting risk profiles of companies entering into JOAs, and provides guidance and practical advice on putting in place adequate ABC measures to deal with these risks.
KEY LEGISLATION AND INSTRUMENTS
UK: BRIBERY ACT 2010
The UK Bribery Act 2010 (Bribery Act) came into force on 1 July 2011. It criminalises the giving and receiving of bribes, bribery of foreign public officials and, significantly for companies, includes an offence of failing to prevent bribery by persons performing services for or on their behalf (associated persons) (Section 7 Offence). Such an association can arise from a company ‘ s relationship with contractors, suppliers, distributors or, as tends to be more common in the energy sector, joint venture partners. A company can be criminally liable for bribery committed by an associated person even if the company was unaware of the bribe. However, the company has a full defence if it can demonstrate that, despite a particular case of bribery, it nevertheless had ‘ adequate procedures ‘ in place to prevent persons associated with it from committing bribery.
The Bribery Act provides the most comprehensive anti-bribery legislation to date with a wide territorial reach. For an offence to come within the scope of the Bribery Act, it must have been committed in the UK or, if committed outside the UK, the off ender must have a close connection with the UK. Specifically, the Bribery Act applies if the offence was committed by a UK citizen, a person usually resident in the UK, or a company incorporated under the laws of the UK. Senior officers of a company that has engaged in bribery can also be prosecuted for the offence. International energy companies that carry on a business or part of a business in the UK, wherever in the world they may be incorporated or formed, will likely be caught by the Bribery Act.

Summary
This chapter provides empirical and theoretical understanding of cognition. Today localizationism dominates neuroscience, ranging from single cell recording to functional magnetic resonance imaging (FMRI), while anti-localizationism has a new home in dynamical systems modeling. Cognitive science encompasses both. It is sometimes said that the cognitive revolution stemmed from seizing on a new technology, the digital computer, as a metaphor for the mind. Artificial neural network represents a counterpoint to discrete computation. Symbolic architectures share a commitment to representations whose elements are symbols and operations on those representations that typically involve moving, copying, deleting, comparing, or replacing symbols. The chapter highlights just two trends: the expansion of inquiry down into the brain (cognitive neuroscience) and out into the body and world (embedded and extended cognition). The expansion outward has been more diverse, but the transitional figure clearly is James J. Gibson.

One consequence of “high stakes testing” in Tuscaloosa area schools has been exclusion of materials science faculty from any meaningful participation in middle and high school classrooms. Beyond the loss of resources from the classroom that Materials Science faculty and their students represent, this also has negative consequences for faculty wanting to build ties to schools to address NSF’s “broader impact” criteria. A group of STEM and Education faculty at The University of Alabama have been testing a team based approach designed to overcome the systemic constraints that prevent effective STEM/K-12 collaboration. Teams consisting of a high school teacher, a STEM faculty member, and a STEM graduate student have spent three weeks during summer 2010 to identify/develop and implement an inquiry based science experiments. The experiments are being tested on science campers at McWane Science Center prior to being assessed in the teachers’ classrooms during the fall semester. The experiments were chosen by each team and represent significant advances over those currently available in the schools. By setting a problem that no team member is able to solve alone an environment was produced where success requires meaningful collaboration. Preliminary qualitative evaluation indicates deeper understanding of the school environment by the STEM faculty and greater respect for the skills teachers bring to this endeavor. Successes in this pilot program have generated credibility with the local school district, opening the door to scaling up the project, and developing further positive ties. Incorporation of lead teachers from Alabama Science in Motion also allows the experiments developed to be widely disseminated throughout Alabama, as well as providing a mechanism to identify existing experiments to enhance.
Development of porcine embryos and offspring after intracytoplasmic sperm injection with liposome transfected or non-transfected sperm into in vitro matured oocytes

The objective of this study was to evaluate in vitro and in vivo development of porcine in vitro matured (IVM) porcine oocytes fertilised by intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) and the possibility of producing transgenic embryos and offspring with this procedure. Activated ICSI oocytes had a higher pronuclear formation than non-activated ICSI oocytes (mean 64.8±17.3% vs 28.5±3.4%, p<0.05). When the zygotes with two pronuclei were cultured to day 2, there was no difference (p<0.05) in the cleavage rate (mean 60.0±7.0% vs 63.3±12.7%) between the two groups. The blastocyst rate in the activation group was significantly higher than that in the non-activation group (mean 30.0±11.6% vs 4.6±4.2%, p<0.05). After injection of the sperm transfected with DNA/liposome complex, destabilised enhanced green fluorescent protein (d2EGFP) expression was not observed on day 2 in either cleaved or uncleaved embryos. But from day 3, some of the embryos at the 2-cell to 4-cell stage started to express d2EGFP. On day 7, about 30% of cleaved embryos, which were in the range of 2-cell to blastocyst stage, expressed d2EGFP. However, for the IVF oocytes inseminated with sperm transfected with DNA/liposome complex, and for oocytes injected with sperm transfected with DNA/liposome complex, and for oocytes injected with DNA/liposome complex following insemination with sperm not treated with DNA/liposome complex, none of the embryos expressed d2EGFP. Sixteen day 4 ICSI embryos derived from sperm not treated with DNA/liposome complex were transferred into a day 3 recipient. One recipient delivered a female piglet with normal birthweight. After transfer of the ICSI embryos derived from sperm transfected with DNA/liposome complex, none of the four recipients maintained pregnancy.
