We use newly available micro-data from the 1911 to 1941 Canadian Censuses to investigate the impact of immigration on the Canadian earnings distribution in the first half of the twentieth century. We show that Canadian inequality rose sharply in the inter-war years, particularly in the 1920s, coinciding with two of the largest immigration decades in Canadian history. We find that immigration was not the main force driving changes in the earnings distribution. This results from a combination of self-selection by immigrants, occupational adjustments after arrival, and general equilibrium adjustments in the economy.

We report the results of the first large-scale experiment involving paid political advertising. During the opening months of a 2006 gubernatorial campaign, approximately $2 million of television and radio advertising on behalf of the incumbent candidate was deployed experimentally. In each experimental media market, the launch date and volume of television advertising were randomly assigned. In order to gauge movement in public opinion, a tracking poll conducted brief telephone interviews with approximately 1,000 registered voters each day and a brief follow-up one month after the conclusion of the television campaign. Results indicate that televised ads have strong but short-lived effects on voting preferences. The ephemeral nature of these effects is more consistent with psychological models of priming than with models of on-line processing.

Background
Although significant associations of childhood adversities with adult mental disorders are widely documented, most studies focus on single childhood adversities predicting single disorders.
AimsTo examine joint associations of 12 childhood adversities with first onset of 20 DSM–IV disorders in World Mental Health (WMH) Surveys in 21 countries.
MethodNationally or regionally representative surveys of 51 945 adults assessed childhood adversities and lifetime DSM–IV disorders with the WHO Composite International Diagnostic Interview (CIDI).
ResultsChildhood adversities were highly prevalent and interrelated. Childhood adversities associated with maladaptive family functioning (e.g. parental mental illness, child abuse, neglect) were the strongest predictors of disorders. Co-occurring childhood adversities associated with maladaptive family functioning had significant subadditive predictive associations and little specificity across disorders. Childhood adversities account for 29.8% of all disorders across countries.
ConclusionsChildhood adversities have strong associations with all classes of disorders at all life-course stages in all groups of WMH countries. Long-term associations imply the existence of as-yet undetermined mediators.

From Director Dan Green's report, following this report, it is obvious that the Central Bureau for Astronomical Telegrams (CBAT) continues its excellent work. The Electronic Telegrams (CBETs), established in the previous triennium, have become the regular means for fast communication, with the Circulars providing the official and archival record of discoveries and designations. It is regretted that subscriptions to the printed Circulars continue to decline, but inevitable in this age of electronic communication.

Summary
Introduction
The prevailing myth, in Canada at least, is that the Great Depression of the 1930s came to an end only with the outbreak of World War EL This is not an unreasonable interpretation of events given the prolonged time that the depression went on and the dramatic changes that occurred after 1939. The source of this interpretation is the persistence of unemployment during the decade. The goal of this chapter is to provide a more balanced view. The basic methodology is comparative economic history. We analyse the economic data for Australia and Canada using a simple macroeconomic model of an open economy.
The first conclusion one can draw from the course of real output change in Australia and Canada as revealed in Figures 4.1 and 4.2 is that recovery did not wait until the outbreak of hostilities in 1939. By 1932 in Australia and by 1934 in Canada, real growth was again positive and remained that way for the balance of the decade. The second point is that level of growth differed quite substantially during the recovery period. In Australia the average annual rate of real output expansion was between 3 and 4 per cent while in Canada it moved around a level slightly above 8 per cent. Of course the fall in output between 1930 and 1933 was much sharper in Canada. Thirdly, in both countries growth rates reached a ceiling by the mid-1930s and then cycled around this ceiling.

Samples of curd and cheese, taken throughout cheese-making with milks concentrated to different extents, were examined by light microscopy and by scanning and transmission electron microscopy. The mature cheeses were analysed for textural parameters by instrumental and sensory means. The protein was packed in larger, more compact areas and the fat was more segregated in the curds and cheeses from the more concentrated milks. The protein network increased in coarseness in proportion to the concentration factor of the milk, the relative differences being the same throughout cheese-making into the mature cheese. Thus, the basic structure of the protein network was laid down during the curd firming process and was not fundamentally altered later in cheese-making. The fat/protein interfaeial area in the cheese and the changes in structure during maturation decreased as the concentration factor of the milk increased. The instrumental firmness, cohesiveness and force and compression required to cause fracture, and the sensory firmness, crumbliness, granularity and dryness of the cheese all increased as the concentration factor of the milk increased. The adhesiveness declined and there was little change in elasticity, with increase in milk concentration factor. The textural differences were related to the smaller fat content, lower level of proteolysis, stronger links in the protein matrix and reduced capacity of the fat and protein phases to move relative to each other in the cheeses from the more concentrated milks.

One of the most interesting periods of Canadian economic history is that which encompasses the years 1890 to 1929. During this period, the prairie provinces were largely settled, new staple exports emerged, and regional interdependence increased. Any explanation of national economic growth over these years, then, necessarily involves an examination of the different responses among regions to these new sources of growth. In essence, we are asking the question: what is the relation between the spatial reallocation of economic activity and the growth of the Canadian economy over this period? To answer this question and to look at some of its implications, regional (provincial) gross-value-added estimates for selected years were made.
Regional estimates of gross value added were made for the years 1890, 1910, and 1929. These three years were chosen to satisfy, as closely as possible, the condition that they represent a similar level of economic activity at each point of time. These years were chosen since they are all years of relatively high economic activity. The first two years faced the additional constraint that they had to coincide with census dates. The choice of years of high level economic activity was made in order to avoid biases in the trend rates of growth which would arise if the initial and terminal dates were at different phases of the business cycle. For example, if the initial year coincided with a year of high unemployment and the terminal year low unemployment, then an upward bias in growth rates might have occurred. Initial and terminal dates chosen at the trough of business cycles would also have avoided this potential slope bias.
