The 2001/02 austral summer was the warmest summer on record in Taylor Valley, Antarctica, (∼78° S) since continuous records of temperature began in 1985. The highest stream-flows ever recorded in the Onyx River, Wright Valley, were also recorded that year (the record goes back to the 1969/70 austral summer). In early January 2002, a groundwater seep was observed flowing in the southwest portion of Taylor Valley. This flow has been named ‘Wormherder Creek’ (WHC) and represents an unusual event, probably occurring on a decadal time-scale. The physical characteristics of this feature suggest that it may have flowed at other times in the past. Other groundwater seeps, emanating from the north-facing slope of Taylor Valley, were also observed. Little work has been done previously on these very ephemeral seeps, and the source of water is unknown. These features, resembling recently described features on Mars, represent the melting of subsurface ice. The Martian features have been interpreted as groundwater seeps. In this paper we compare the chemistry of the WHC groundwater seep to that of the surrounding streams that flow every austral summer. The total dissolved solids content of WHC was ∼6 times greater than that of some nearby streams. The Na : Cl and SO4 : Cl ratios of the seep waters are higher than those of the streams, but the Mg : Cl and HCO3 : Cl ratios are lower, indicating different sources of solutes to the seeps compared to the streams. The enrichment of Na and SO4 relative to Cl may suggest significant dissolution of mirabilite within the previously unwetted soil. The proposed occurrence of abundant mirabilite in higher-elevation soils of the dry valley region agrees with geochemical models developed, but not tested, in the late 1970s. The geochemical data demonstrate that these seeps could be important in ‘rinsing’ the soils by dissolving and redistributing the long-term accumulation of salts, and perhaps improving habitat suitability for soil biota. The H4SiO4 concentration is 2–3 times greater in WHC than in the surrounding streams, indicating a large silicate-weathering component in the seep waters.

Fibroblast growth factor (FGF)-2 (basic) is a potent angiogenic molecule involved in tumor progression, and is one of several growth factors with a central role in ovarian carcinogenesis. We hypothesized that common single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in the FGF2 gene may alter angiogenic potential and thereby susceptibility to ovarian cancer. We analyzed 25 FGF2 tgSNPs using five independent study populations from the United States and Australia. Analysis was restricted to non-Hispanic White women with serous ovarian carcinoma (1269 cases and 2829 controls). There were no statistically significant associations between any FGF2 SNPs and ovarian cancer risk. There were two nominally statistically significant associations between heterozygosity for two FGF2 SNPs (rs308379 and rs308447; p < .05) and serous ovarian cancer risk in the combined dataset, but rare homozygous estimates did not achieve statistical significance, nor were they consistent with the log additive model of inheritance. Overall genetic variation in FGF2 does not appear to play a role in susceptibility to ovarian cancer.

Numerous studies have used the Howells Peruvian sample from the province of Yauyos as the morphological representative for South America. Although Peru has a rich history of investigations of human skeletal remains, biological distance studies based on craniometrics are limited to nonexistent. This study examines the morphological variation found in Peru using the Howells sample and three additional coastal (Makatampu and Ancón) and highland (Cajamarca) samples. The between-group variation and the degree of among-group differentiation were tested using a canonical discriminant analysis and Mahalanobis D², respectively. All groups are significantly different from the Yauyos sample and results indicate a closer morphological affinity between coastal groups and the two highland groups.

Objective.
Prior-approval antimicrobial stewardship programs (ASPs) improve patient outcomes and decrease antimicrobial resistance. These benefits would be limited if physicians circumvented ASP efforts. We evaluated whether prescribers wait until after the prior-approval period to order restricted antimicrobial therapy that is in conflict with guidelines or unnecessary.
Design.A cross-sectional study design and a retrospective cohort study design.
Setting.A tertiary care, academic medical center with a prior-approval ASP that was active between 8 AM and 10 PM.
Methods. We evaluated whether there was an increase in the proportion of orders for antimicrobial therapy that involve restricted (vs nonrestricted) antimicrobials during the first hour that the ASP is inactive (ie, the first hour that prior approval is not required), compared with the remainder of the day. We also evaluated whether restricted antimicrobial therapy ordered during this first hour is less likely to be continued when the ASP becomes active the next day, compared with that ordered during the preceding hour.
Results.A greater proportion of the antimicrobial therapy orders placed between 10:00 PM and 10:59 PM were for restricted agents, compared with orders placed during other periods (57.0% vs 49.9%; P = .02). Surgical patients for whom antimicrobial therapy orders were placed between 10:00 PM and 10:59 PM were less likely to have that antimicrobial therapy continued, compared with patients whose therapy was ordered between 9:00 PM and 9:59 PM (60.0% vs 98.1%; P <.001). Nonsurgical patients whose therapy orders were placed between 10:00PM and 10:59 PM were also less likely to have the ordered antimicrobial therapy continued, compared with patients whose therapy was ordered between 9:00 PM and 9:59 PM (70.8% vs 84.2%; P = .01).
Conclusion.Physicians avoid having to obtain prior approval for therapy involving restricted antimicrobials by waiting until restrictions are no longer active to place orders. Compared with restricted antimicrobial therapy ordered when the ASP is active, these courses of therapy are less often continued by the ASP, suggesting that they are more likely to be in conflict with guidelines or unnecessary.

The X-ray crystallographic structures of two mutants (K206Q and H207E) of the N-lobe of human transferrin (hTF/2N) have been determined to high resolution (1.8 and 2.0 Å, respectively). Both mutant proteins bind iron with greater affinity than native hTF/2N. The structures of the K206Q and H207E mutants show interactions (both H-bonding and electrostatic) that stabilize the interaction of Lys296 in the closed conformation, thereby stabilizing the iron bound forms.

Neogene deposits of the northern Dominican Republic contain a diverse fossil assemblage that is especially rich in corals and mollusks. To see if faunal change was concordant or discordant within and among taxa and decipher factors controlling distributions, we compared distributions of coral communities, the gastropod families Strombidae and Marginellidae, and the bivalve family Corbulidae. We also incorporated published ranges for the Cardiidae (Vokes, 1989), Cancellariidae (Jung and Petit, 1990), and the columbellid genus Strombina (Jung, 1986).
First and last appearances of individual mollusk species were diachronous among sections. Within the sections, however, first and last appearances of mollusk species tended to coincide. Concordance of species ranges could be caused by unconformities or faults, be an artifact of sampling, or indicate similar responses by species to environmental changes. Neither stratigraphic gaps nor faults appear to correspond to concordant first or last appearances. Although the absence of mollusk taxa generally corresponds to less intense sampling, sampling intensity is highly correlated with the presence of macrofossils and therefore, taxa absence is probably real. First and last appearances do coincide with paleoenvironmental changes such as rapid deepening, introduction of marine conditions, increased intensity of erosional bottom currents, and changes from reefal to sand flat facies.
Comparisons among taxa also helped elucidate other distributions patterns. For instance, comparing coral communities to strombid ranges showed that strombid diversity increased in grass flats (inhabited by free living corals) and reefal deposits, indicating similar ecologic preferences to many modern strombid species. Using the coral fauna to distinguish a grass flat community from other shallow marine facies also helped explain corbulid abundances as environmentally induced, with lower numbers in grass flat deposits.
Simultaneous comparison of species distributions within diverse taxa can help explain the nature of species occurrences. For several mollusk taxa from the Neogene of the Dominican Republic, the general correspondence in distribution patterns across taxa indicates that paleoenvironmental conditions were controlling species distributions.
