Summary
This chapter reviews the contribution of the learning sciences to teacher learning research, with particular consideration of how cognitive, sociocognitive, sociocultural, and improvement-focused perspectives extend teacher learning research. Learning scientists study all phases of teacher learning, including preservice education (before becoming a teacher), the first few years of teaching, and ongoing mastery throughout the career. Research often focuses on teaching practices – what teachers do in the classroom and how they move from novice to expert performance. Teacher learning can be supported through collaboration with other teachers in a professional learning community (PLC); through coaching and mentoring; through videos of expert teaching practice; and through educative curriculum materials.

Tuberculosis (TB) remains an important cause of hospitalization and mortality in the United States. Prevention of TB transmission in acute care facilities relies on prompt identification and implementation of airborne isolation, rapid diagnosis, and treatment of presumptive pulmonary TB patients. In areas with low TB burden, this strategy may result in inefficient utilization of airborne infection isolation rooms (AIIRs). We reviewed TB epidemiology and diagnostic approaches to inform optimal TB detection in low-burden settings. Published clinical prediction rules for individual studies have a sensitivity ranging from 81% to 100% and specificity ranging from 14% to 63% for detection of culture-positive pulmonary TB patients admitted to acute care facilities. Nucleic acid amplification tests (NAATs) have a specificity of >98%, and the sensitivity of NAATs varies by acid-fast bacilli sputum smear status (positive smear, ≥95%; negative smear, 50%–70%). We propose an infection prevention strategy using a clinical prediction rule to identify patients who warrant diagnostic evaluation for TB in an AIIR with an NAAT. Future studies are needed to evaluate whether use of clinical prediction rules and NAATs results in optimized utilization of AIIRs and improved detection and treatment of presumptive pulmonary TB patients.

Backgrounding of feeder cattle is a growing specialty operation in the so-called “Fescue Belt” grasslands of the South (Bradford et al.). Backgrounding is largely a seasonal enterprise, consisting of the purchase of weaned calves that are placed on pasture and supplemental feed for several months and then resold for placement in feedlots. Since feeder calf and feeder cattle prices are among the most volatile of all classes of cattle, backgrounders face considerable price risk (Russell and Franzmann). In principle, hedging could shift this risk, but there has been a question whether hedging can be worthwhile, given the additional costs and financial obligations involved.

Summary
Introduction
Supercontinuum (SC) generation, the creation of broadband spectral components from an intense light pulse passing through a nonlinear medium, is of great theoretical interest as well as having numerous applications in optical frequency metrology, bio-imaging and spectroscopy (Dudley et al., 2006). In particular, the demonstration of efficient SC generation in a silica photonic crystal fibre (PCF) and silica fibre tapers using a Ti:Sapphire laser (Birks et al., 2000, Ranka et al., 2000) had a striking impact on this research field. The advent of this new class of waveguide, capable of engineered dispersion and strong confinement of light, facilitated research on the fundamental study of the evolution of ultra-fast pulses in highly nonlinear wave-guides, as well as the development of practical broadband light sources using the proper combination of fibres and laser pulses. Although the successful demonstration of ultra-broadband light generation often spanning more than an octave has been made in silica fibre, the small Kerr nonlinear coefficient of silica still limits its practicality. The ideal SC light source would use a compact, low power pulsed laser. This goal has motivated the study of SC generation in waveguides with higher nonlinear coefficients and lower energy thresholds or decreased device length to initiate the nonlinear process. Several approaches based on this idea have been reported utilising highly nonlinear material in a fibre geometry such as lead-silicate, bismuth and chalcogenide fibres (Brambilla et al., 2005, Leong et al., 2006, Mägi et al., 2007), and in a planar waveguide geometry including silicon (Boyraz et al., 2004), AlGaAs (Siviloglou et al., 2006) and chalcogenide waveguides (Psaila et al., 2007, Lamont et al., 2008).

Summary
Teacher learning is an active area for research in education, and although the learning sciences have not been primarily focused on teacher learning, teacher education, or professional development, we argue that the perspectives our field brings to the study of teachers' learning offer great promise. Learning sciences researchers – guided by the cognitive, sociocognitive, sociocultural, and systems-oriented perspectives that are prevalent in our field – have made contributions to and extended research on teacher learning in new and significant directions.
Fostering change in classroom learning and teaching is a central concern of the learning sciences, and teachers are a cornerstone of nearly all formal instructional systems. Teachers are the ultimate interpreters of any classroom-based intervention, and are responsible for a large amount of variance in the effects of instructional interventions – this is known as the “teacher effect” (Nye, Konstantopoulos, & Hedges, 2004). If learning sciences researchers are interested in translating research into practice to effect change at the classroom level – and we believe that they are – it is imperative that the field pay careful attention to how teachers learn their craft and learn to effectively enact the innovations (technologies, curricula, etc.) that emerge from learning sciences research (Fishman et al., 2004).

Optical pump-probe measurements were performed on planar slab waveguides containing silicon nanocrystals in an attempt to measure optical gain from photo-excited silicon nanocrystals. Two experiments were performed, one with a continuous-wave probe beam and a pulsed pump beam, giving a time resolution of approximately 25 ns, and the other with a pulsed pump and probe beam, giving a time resolution of approximately 10 ps. In both cases the intensity of the probe beam was found to be attenuated by the pump beam, with the attenuation increasing monotonically with increasing pump power. Time-resolved measurements using the first experimental arrangement showed that the probe signal recovered its initial intensity on a time scale of 45-70 μs, a value comparable to the exciton lifetime in Si nanocrystals. These data are shown to be consistent with an induced absorption process such as confined carrier absorption. No evidence for optical gain was observed.

George Will, the well-known pundit, once observed: “A society's recreation is charged with moral significance. Sport—and a society that takes it seriously—would be debased if it did not strictly forbid things that blur the distinction between the triumph of character and the triumph of chemistry.” In opposition, Dan Duchaine, the highly publicized “steroid guru” and counter-culture columnist, declared: “There comes a time for many in competitive athletics where winning is more important than those initial goals of health, recreation, and relaxation.” The parallels of these two philosophies to life in general are patent simply by substituting “sports” and “winning” for “career” and “success,” respectively.
This paper will review the basis for banning anabolic steroids in athletics, and consider especially the recent medical findings that support this prohibition. This survey leads into a discussion of the available deterrents, and the secondary, but essential, role of random drug testing as a final safeguard.

Between November 1982 and July 1984, five patients at a 110-bed pediatric hospital were diagnosed with invasive filamentous fungal infection; three had invasive aspergillosis (IA) and two had invasive zygomycosis (IZ). All five had underlying hematologic malignancy (HM). In a case-control study, these five HM patients (cases) were compared to 10 autopsied HM patients without evidence of aspergillosis or zygomycosis (controls). Cases and controls did not differ in underlying disease or in the degree of immunosuppression, as measured by duration of granulocytopenia and number of platelet transfusions. However, case-patients were more likely than controls to have been hospitalized during the construction of a hospital addition (p<0.02, Fisher's exact test [FET]). Four (80%) of five HM patients autopsied during the period of construction had IA or IZ compared with one (5%) of 21 autopsied before construction began (p=0.001, FET). These findings suggest that, in a population of comparably immunosuppressed patients, construction activity may represent an independent risk factor for IA or IZ. Hospitals caring for such patients should take precautions which minimize exposure of these patients to construction or renovation activity.

Disease outbreaks involving public whirlpools have been reported frequently since their use has become popular in recent years. Because public whirlpools are often used by persons who have only transient contact, infections resulting from their use are difficult to identify, and published reports probably represent only a small portion of a larger public health problem. Most published outbreaks have reported Pseudomonas aeruginosa contamination of the whirlpool as a result of failure to operate the pool according to recommended practices. Maintaining the microbiologic quality of whirlpool water and preventing infection absolutely require regular operation and maintenance, including monitoring and record keeping by qualified personnel.

1. Glucose metabolism and changes in the concentrations of several hormones in jugular plasma were measured in growing lambs fed on fresh pasture ad lib. One group of lambs acted as control while the second received a continuous abomasal infusion supplying 44 g sodium caseinate + 0·5 g L-methionine/d.
2. Hormone concentrations were determined by radioimmunoassay procedures and glucose irreversible loss measured from continuous infusion of D-[U–14C]glucose.
3. Protein infusion increased plasma concentrations of insulin, glucagon and thyroxine (T4), depressed those of growth hormone, prolactin and somatostatin and had no effect on triiodothyronine (T3) concentrations. Cortisol concentrations also tended to be slightly higher in the plasma of protein-infused lambs.
4. Increases in herbage intake within the ad lib. range were associated with increases in plasma insulin and glucagon concentrations and decreases in growth hormone concentration, and it is suggested that these effects could be mediated in part by the accompanying increases in protein absorption from the intestines. The T4:T3 value also decreased with increasing herbage intake, and it is suggested this was due to conversion of T4 to T3.
5. After correction by covariance to equal herbage intake, rates of irreversible glucose loss for control and protein-infused lambs were 9·2 and 10·0 mg/min per kg body-weight0·75. It was calculated that respectively 0·12 and 0·19 of the total glucose production in control and protein-infused lambs could be accounted for by net synthesis from protein.
6. It was concluded that changes in the circulating concentration of several hormones in protein-infused compared with control lambs were likely to have been implicated in protein deposition forming a greater proportion of energy retention in the infused lambs (0·41 v. 0·27).
