Gravitational waves from coalescing neutron stars encode information about nuclear matter at extreme densities, inaccessible by laboratory experiments. The late inspiral is influenced by the presence of tides, which depend on the neutron star equation of state. Neutron star mergers are expected to often produce rapidly rotating remnant neutron stars that emit gravitational waves. These will provide clues to the extremely hot post-merger environment. This signature of nuclear matter in gravitational waves contains most information in the 2–4 kHz frequency band, which is outside of the most sensitive band of current detectors. We present the design concept and science case for a Neutron Star Extreme Matter Observatory (NEMO): a gravitational-wave interferometer optimised to study nuclear physics with merging neutron stars. The concept uses high-circulating laser power, quantum squeezing, and a detector topology specifically designed to achieve the high-frequency sensitivity necessary to probe nuclear matter using gravitational waves. Above 1 kHz, the proposed strain sensitivity is comparable to full third-generation detectors at a fraction of the cost. Such sensitivity changes expected event rates for detection of post-merger remnants from approximately one per few decades with two A+ detectors to a few per year and potentially allow for the first gravitational-wave observations of supernovae, isolated neutron stars, and other exotica.

BiCuTeO is a potential thermoelectric material owing to its low thermal conductivity and high carrier concentration. However, the thermoelectric performance of BiCuTeO is still below average and has much scope for improvement. In this study, we manipulated the nominal oxygen content in BiCuTeO and synthesized BiCuTeOx (x = 0.94–1.06) bulks by a solid-state reaction and pelletized them by a cold-press method. The power factor was enhanced by varying the nominal oxygen deficiency due to the increased Seebeck coefficient. The thermal conductivity was also reduced due to the decrease in lattice thermal conductivity owing to the small grain size generated by the optimal nominal oxygen content. Consequently, the ZT value was enhanced by ∼11% at 523 K for stoichiometric BiCuTeO0.94 compared to BiCuTeO. Thus, optimal oxygen manipulation in BiCuTeO can enhance the thermoelectric performance. This study can be applied to developing oxides with high thermoelectric performances.

Objective
We aimed to investigate the prevalence of grade 1, 2 and 3 thinness among Chinese children and to explore their associations with socio-economic status (SES).
DesignA population, school-based cross-sectional study using multistage, stratified cluster random sampling. Grade 1, 2 and 3 thinness, overweight, obesity and severe obesity were defined by the International Obesity Task Force BMI cut-offs.
SettingSeven districts of Shanghai, China.
SubjectsChinese children aged 3–12 years (n 84 075).
ResultsIn boys and girls, respectively, the prevalence of grade 1 thinness was 8·89 % and 11·78 %, of grade 2 thinness was 2·80 % and 3·74 %, and of grade 3 thinness was 2·23 % and 2·93 %. Compared with urban children, suburban children had higher prevalence of thinness. Children whose parent had low education had higher prevalence of grade 1, 2 and 3 thinness than those whose parent had high education. The prevalence of grade 2 and 3 thinness, obesity and severe obesity in low-SES children was higher than that in high-SES children, and the prevalence of grade 1 thinness was lower than that in high-SES children. Particular patterns of prevalence of grade 1, 2 and 3 thinness appeared in low-, middle- and high-SES children.
ConclusionsThe study describes associations of SES with grade 1, 2 and 3 thinness, overweight, obesity and severe obesity in Shanghai children. The patterns of thinness and obesity in Shanghai provide further insights into BMI patterns in mega-cities in developing countries.

A void free 3C-SiC film grown on Si(100) can be achieved by low pressure chemical vapor deposition using the modified four-step method. The diffusion step plays an important role to enhance the quality of the 3C-SiC buffer layer on Si(100). X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy was used to characterize the bonding characteristics of the 3C-SiC buffer layer of about 10 nm thick. The Si-C bonds are partially formed on the as-carburized Si(100) before the diffusion step. The ratio of C-C to Si-C bonds on the as-carburized Si(100) is about 7:3, which can be lowered to about 1:9 after the diffusion step at 1350 oC for 5 min or at 1300 oC for 7 min. According to XPS data and Fick's second law, the diffusivity of Si across the 3C-SiC interlayer are determined to be 2.2×10-16 cm2/s and 3.13×10-16 cm2/s at 1300°C and 1350°C, respectively. The derived activation energy is 1.6 eV for the diffusion of Si atoms in the 3C-SiC buffer layer.

Plasma immersion ion implantation (PIII) is a technique of material processing and surface modification, using controllable negative high voltage pulsed bias to attract the ion generated from the plasma. The method using PIII treatment quickly improves the performance of solar cell made of crystalline silicon, including monocrystalline, multicrystalline and polycrystalline silicon. Hydrogen ions are attracted and quickly implanted into solar cell under a predetermined negative pulse voltage, thus, the passivation of the crystal defects of the solar cell can be realized in a short period. Meanwhile, the properties of the antireflection layer can not be damaged as the proper operating conditions are used. Consequently, the series resistance can be significantly reduced and the filling factor increases as a result. Both the short-circuit and the open-circuit voltage can be increased. The efficiency can be enhanced.

Copper metallization for GaAs was evaluated by using Cu/Ta/GaAs multilayers for its thermal stability. A thin Ta layer of 30 nm thickness was sputtered on the GaAs substrate as the diffusion barrier before copper film metallization. As judged from the results of sheet resistance, X-ray diffraction, Auger electron spectroscopy and transmission electron microscopy, the Cu/Ta films on GaAs were very stable up to 500 °C without Cu migration into GaAs. After 550 °C annealing, the interfacial mixing of Ta with GaAs substrate occurred, resulting in the formation of TaGa2 and TaAs2, and the diffusion of Ga and As through the Ta layer formed the Cu3Ga and Cu3As phases at the Cu/Ta interface. After 600 °C annealing, the reaction of GaAs with Ta and Cu formed TaAs and Cu3Ga, as a result of Cu migration and interfacial instability.

After the closing of Bureau International de L'Heure (BIH) and the establishment of International Earth Rotation Service (IERS) at the end of 1987. Shanghai Observatory has been the institute where the astrometric latitude and time observational data are collected and treated. During the past four years, about 75,293 measurements in latitude or time determination have been obtained by the 64 optical astrometric instruments over the world from which the five-day Earth Rotation Parameters of the 1988–1990 period have still been reduced. Twelve Quarterly Report on the optical ERP have been distributed. Since the beginning of 1991 the regular reduction of the ERP has been stopped but the collecting of the observational data is still going on in Shanghai Observatory in order to meet the requirements of the scientists who are still interested on the studies concerned with these observations. There are still 42 optical astrometric instruments taking part into the regular observations at the moment.
