The unique gold pendant found at Chrysolakkos, Malia, Crete, in 1930 has been variously interpreted, and usually is said to represent a pair of bees. This vague interpretation is discussed, and it is pointed out that the three discs that are suspended from the pendant closely resemble the fruits of a native Cretan herb, Tordylium apulum. Megascolia maculata, a member of the order Hymenoptera, is proposed as the model for the insects. Like a gold toggle pin, also from Chrysolakkos, the pendant demonstrates that Cretan goldsmiths were capable of creating aesthetically pleasing work by paying close attention to the local flora and fauna and used examples as the models for their unique jewellery

Objective
To assess the extent of error present in self-reported weight data in the Women’s Health Initiative, variables that may be associated with error, and to develop methods to reduce any identified error.
DesignProspective cohort study.
SettingForty clinical centres in the USA.
ParticipantsWomen (n 75 336) participating in the Women’s Health Initiative Observational Study (WHI-OS) and women (n 6236) participating in the WHI Long Life Study (LLS) with self-reported and measured weight collected about 20 years later (2013–2014).
ResultsThe correlation between self-reported and measured weights was 0·97. On average, women under-reported their weight by about 2 lb (0·91 kg). The discrepancies varied by age, race/ethnicity, education and BMI. Compared with normal-weight women, underweight women over-reported their weight by 3·86 lb (1·75 kg) and obese women under-reported their weight by 4·18 lb (1·90 kg) on average. The higher the degree of excess weight, the greater the under-reporting of weight. Adjusting self-reported weight for an individual’s age, race/ethnicity and education yielded an identical average weight to that measured.
ConclusionsCorrelations between self-reported and measured weights in the WHI are high. Discrepancies varied by different sociodemographic characteristics, especially an individual’s BMI. Correction of self-reported weight for individual characteristics could improve the accuracy of assessment of obesity status in postmenopausal women.

Objective
To evaluate whole-genome sequencing (WGS) as a molecular typing tool for MRSA outbreak investigation.
DesignInvestigation of MRSA colonization/infection in a neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) over 3 years (2014–2017).
SettingSingle-center level IV NICU.
PatientsNICU infants and healthcare workers (HCWs).
MethodsInfants were screened for MRSA using a swab of the anterior nares, axilla, and groin, initially by targeted (ring) screening, and later by universal weekly screening. Clinical cultures were collected as indicated. HCWs were screened once using swabs of the anterior nares. MRSA isolates were typed using WGS with core-genome multilocus sequence typing (cgMLST) analysis and by pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE). Colonized and infected infants and HCWs were decolonized. Control strategies included reinforcement of hand hygiene, use of contact precautions, cohorting, enhanced environmental cleaning, and remodeling of the NICU.
ResultsWe identified 64 MRSA-positive infants: 53 (83%) by screening and 11 (17%) by clinical cultures. Of 85 screened HCWs, 5 (6%) were MRSA positive. WGS of MRSA isolates identified 2 large clusters (WGS groups 1 and 2), 1 small cluster (WGS group 3), and 8 unrelated isolates. PFGE failed to distinguish WGS group 2 and 3 isolates. WGS groups 1 and 2 were codistributed over time. HCW MRSA isolates were primarily in WGS group 1. New infant MRSA cases declined after implementation of the control interventions.
ConclusionWe identified 2 contemporaneous MRSA outbreaks alongside sporadic cases in a NICU. WGS was used to determine strain relatedness at a higher resolution than PFGE and was useful in guiding efforts to control MRSA transmission.

Summary
Australia is a paradoxical continent; an isolated, arid island, a fragment of ancient Gondwanaland. To the earliest European mariners who crossed the Indian Ocean and chanced upon the western coasts of the Great Southland or New Holland, the land in its pristine state appeared barren because it was clothed with drab, apparently useless scrub and forest that yielded no easily recognisable fruits or vegetables. They encountered no ‘civilised’ people and saw neither towns, field crops, orchards, vineyards, cattle nor sheep. The swans were black and many of the four-legged animals did not walk on allfours but hopped. Added to these anomalies, the European visitors usually had the greatest difficulty finding fresh water. Yet, Australia's unique flora (which this essay will emphasise) is richly diverse and of great scientific interest. Joseph Banks recognised the paradox when, shortly after departing in 1770, he wrote: ‘Of Plants in general the countrey afforded a far larger variety than its barren appearance seemed to promise’ (Banks 1770, f 262).
In the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries the passage across the Indian Ocean from the Cape of Good Hope to the Spice Islands was beset with hazards of many kinds. It was a very long voyage; ships from Europe often took a whole year to reach Java, especially if they went by the usual route from the Cape along the African coast in a north-easterly direction and through the tropics. However, in 1611 Hendrick Brouwer discovered that by sailing south to about 40°S and then heading east at that latitude for about a thousand Dutch miles (around 7000km) before turning north, the voyage could be shortened by about four months. As well as being quicker, this southern route, in latitudes later nicknamed the Roaring Forties, was cooler and healthier than the tropical one.
Brouwer's discovery was discussed by the directors of the Dutch East India Company (VOC) who favoured it and issued a Seynbrief (also termed a Selyaesorder) on 15 August 1617, instructing its captains to attempt this passage. Yet, it also presented many difficulties, mainly because it was not easy at that time for mariners in sailing ships to calculate distances travelled, and any vessel that maintained this course for more than a thousand Dutch miles would arrive in uncharted waters.

The study of brain development and that of behavioral development have historically proceeded independently of one another. This is an unfortunate set of circumstances, given that the disciplines concerned with development—for example, developmental psychology, pediatrics, psychiatry, clinical psychology, and the neurosciences—have much to learn from each other. Drawing on recent advances in the developmental brain and behavioral sciences, we illustrate the transdisciplinary approach our group has adopted in the service of uniting the research on brain and behavior in the context of development. We specifically report on our nonhuman primate and human studies that collectively illustrate our “genes to behavior” approach to the study of development. Our goal in summarizing our research in this fashion is to promote discussion about promising templates for how research on brain, behavior, and development might proceed into the 21st century.

The mechanical properties of interfaces in Ti/Al2O3 composites were characterized by four point bending and fiber pushout tests. To determine the bi-material fracture toughness with four point bending tests, planar interfaces were evaluated as sandwich composites. By changing the processing temperature from 700°C to 1000°C, the interfacial fracture energy was found to increase ug to 950°C. It then decreases when the processing temperature is further increased to 1000°C. This is because of the formation of the intermetallic compound (Ti3Al). Interfacial shear strength and interfacial frictional stress of 323MPa and 312 MPa were obtained, respectively, by performing pushout tests of the Al2O3 fiber reinforced Ti matrix composites. These values are smaller than the shear yielding strength of the Ti matrix which is 525 MPa.
