Glacial ripping involves glaciotectonic disintegration of rock hills and extensive removal of rock at the ice-sheet bed, triggered by hydraulic jacking caused by fluctuating water pressures. Evidence from eastern Sweden shows that glacial ripping caused significant subglacial erosion during the final deglaciation of the Fennoscandian ice sheet, distinct from abrasion and plucking (quarrying). Here we analyse the ice drag forces exerted onto rock obstacles at the base of an ice sheet, and the resisting forces of such rock obstacles: glaciotectonic disintegration requires that ice drag forces exceed the resisting forces of the rock obstacle. We consider rock obstacles of different sizes, shapes and fracture patterns, informed by natural examples from eastern Sweden. Our analysis shows that limited overpressure events, unfavourable fracture patterns, low-transmissivity fractures, slow ice and streamlined rock hamper rock hill disintegration. Conversely, under fast ice flow and fluctuating water pressures, disintegration is possible if the rock hill contains subhorizontal, transmissive fractures. Rock steps on previously smooth, abraded surfaces, caused by hydraulic jacking, also enhance drag forces and can cause disintegration of a rock hill. Glacial ripping is a physically plausible erosion mechanism, under realistic glaciological conditions prevalent near ice margins.

In western Canada, more money is spent on wild oat herbicides than on any other weed species, and wild oat resistance to herbicides is the most widespread resistance issue. A direct-seeded field experiment was conducted from 2010 to 2014 at eight Canadian sites to determine crop life cycle, crop species, crop seeding rate, crop usage, and herbicide rate combination effects on wild oat management and canola yield. Combining 2× seeding rates of early-cut barley silage with 2× seeding rates of winter cereals and excluding wild oat herbicides for 3 of 5 yr (2011 to 2013) often led to similar wild oat density, aboveground wild oat biomass, wild oat seed density in the soil, and canola yield as a repeated canola–wheat rotation under a full wild oat herbicide rate regime. Wild oat was similarly well managed after 3 yr of perennial alfalfa without wild oat herbicides. Forgoing wild oat herbicides in only 2 of 5 yr from exclusively summer annual crop rotations resulted in higher wild oat density, biomass, and seed banks. Management systems that effectively combine diverse and optimal cultural practices against weeds, and limit herbicide use, reduce selection pressure for weed resistance to herbicides and prolong the utility of threatened herbicide tools.

Nonlinear effects on the receptivity of cross-flow in the swept Hiemenz boundary layer are investigated. Numerical simulations are generated using a vorticity form of the Navier–Stokes equations. Steady perturbations are established using surface suction and blowing distributed along the spanwise direction as either a periodic strip or a band of small holes. The method of excitation, the size and the location of the prescribed forcing are shown to have a significant influence on the receptivity of the boundary layer. Blowing holes are found to excite perturbations with considerably larger magnitudes than those generated using a periodic suction and blowing strip. A semi-logarithmic relationship is derived that relates the initial amplitude of the linear-only disturbances with the location at which the absolute magnitude of the chordwise primary Fourier harmonic attains a stationary point or a size of approximately one-tenth of the free-stream spanwise velocity. Furthermore, the size of the physical chordwise velocity perturbation about this position can be estimated directly from the linear-only solutions. This would suggest that, for sufficiently small initial amplitudes, the onset of some nonlinear flow development properties can be predicted directly from a linear receptivity analysis.

Background
Information about the cost-effectiveness of early intervention programmes for first-episode psychosis is limited.
AimsTo evaluate the cost-effectiveness of an intensive early-intervention programme (called OPUS) (trial registration NCT00157313) consisting of enriched assertive community treatment, psychoeducational family treatment and social skills training for individuals with first-episode psychosis compared with standard treatment.
MethodAn incremental cost-effectiveness analysis of a randomised controlled trial, adopting a public sector perspective was undertaken.
ResultsThe mean total costs of OPUS over 5 years (€123683, s.e. = 8970) were not significantly different from that of standard treatment (€148751, s.e. = 13073). At 2-year follow-up the mean Global Assessment of Functioning (GAF) score in the OPUS group (55.16, s.d. = 15.15) was significantly higher than in standard treatment group (51.13, s.d. = 15.92). However, the mean GAF did not differ significantly between the groups at 5-year follow-up (55.35 (s.d. = 18.28) and 54.16 (s.d. = 18.41), respectively). Cost-effectiveness planes based on non-parametric bootstrapping showed that OPUS was less costly and more effective in 70% of the replications. For a willingness-to-pay up to €50000 the probability that OPUS was cost-effective was more than 80%.
ConclusionsThe incremental cost-effectiveness analysis showed that there was a high probability of OPUS being cost-effective compared with standard treatment.

We postulated previously that variables related to pulmonary flow are independent predictors of levels of atrial natriuretic peptide in children with congenital heart disease. The aim of this study was to test this hypothesis in relation to other hemodynamic and clinical variables.
During catheterization we measured the levels of plasma N-terminal atrial natriuretic peptide prohormone in the plasma of 68 children with congenital heart disease. All had undergone complete clinical, echocardiographic and invasive hemodynamic investigations. The influence on the prohormone was analyzed for 10 different variables in a multiple linear regression model. The variability could be explained in large parts (adjusted R2 = 77.2%) by variations in atrial pressures or sizes, together with the degree of excessive pulmonary blood flow and signs of heart failure.
A value for atrial natriuretic peptide prohormone above 800 pmol/1 predicted hemodynamic imbalance (defined as elevated pressures in left or right atrium or the pulmonary arteries, and/or Qp/Qs > 1.5) with a specificity of 94%, a sensitivity of 73%, a positive likelihood ratio of 12.2, and a negative likelihood ratio of 0.29.
In conclusion, variables related to pulmonary blood flow are influential determinants of the levels of atrial natriureic peptide in children with congenital heart disease. Atrial pressures, and symptoms of heart failure are also of major importance.

This overview examines available circum-Antarctic glacial history archives on land, related to developments after the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM). It considers the glacial-stratigraphic and morphologic records and also biostratigraphical information from moss banks, lake sediments and penguin rookeries, with some reference to relevant glacial marine records. It is concluded that Holocene environmental development in Antarctica differed from that in the Northern Hemisphere. The initial deglaciation of the shelf areas surrounding Antarctica took place before 10 000 14C yrs before present(BP), and was controlled by rising global sea level. This was followed by the deglaciation of some presently ice-free inner shelf and land areas between 10 000 and 8000 yr BP. Continued deglaciation occurred gradually between 8000 yr BP and 5000 yr BP. Mid-Holocene glacial readvances are recorded from various sites around Antarctica. There are strong indications of a circum-Antarctic climate warmer than today 4700–2000 yr BP. The best dated records from the Antarctic Peninsula and coastal Victoria Land suggest climatic optimums there from 4000–3000 yr BP and 3600–2600 yr BP, respectively. Thereafter Neoglacial readvances are recorded. Relatively limited glacial expansions in Antarctica during the past few hundred years correlate with the Little Ice Age in the Northern Hemisphere.
