This essay aims to situate the emergence of Siddha medicine as a separate medical system in the erstwhile Madras Presidency of colonial India within a broader socio-economic context. Scholars who have worked on Siddha medicine have stressed more on political dimensions like nationalism and sub-nationalism with inadequate attention to the interplay of various (other) factors including contemporary global developments, changes in the attitude of the colonial State and especially to the new promises held by the greater deference shown to indigenous medical systems from the 1920s. If the construction of ‘national medicine’ based on the Sanskrit texts and the accompanying marginalisation of regional texts and practices were the only reasons for the emergence of Siddha medicine as presented by scholars, it leaves open the question as to why this emergence happened only during the third decade of the twentieth century, though the marginalisation processes started during the first decade itself. This paper seeks to find an answer by analysing the formation of Siddha medical identity beyond the frameworks of nationalism and sub-nationalism. Further, it explicates how material factors served as immediate cause along with the other, and more ideational factors related to the rise of the Dravidian political and cultural movement.

To monitor inflammation in a meaningful way, the markers used must be valid: they must reflect the inflammatory process under study and they must be predictive of future health status. In 2009, the Nutrition and Immunity Task Force of the International Life Sciences Institute, European Branch, organized an expert group to attempt to identify robust and predictive markers, or patterns or clusters of markers, which can be used to assess inflammation in human nutrition studies in the general population. Inflammation is a normal process and there are a number of cells and mediators involved. These markers are involved in, or are produced as a result of, the inflammatory process irrespective of its trigger and its location and are common to all inflammatory situations. Currently, there is no consensus as to which markers of inflammation best represent low-grade inflammation or differentiate between acute and chronic inflammation or between the various phases of inflammatory responses. There are a number of modifying factors that affect the concentration of an inflammatory marker at a given time, including age, diet and body fatness, among others. Measuring the concentration of inflammatory markers in the bloodstream under basal conditions is probably less informative compared with data related to the concentration change in response to a challenge. A number of inflammatory challenges have been described. However, many of these challenges are poorly standardised. Patterns and clusters may be important as robust biomarkers of inflammation. Therefore, it is likely that a combination of multiple inflammatory markers and integrated readouts based upon kinetic analysis following defined challenges will be the most informative biomarker of inflammation.

The cixiid species Reptalus quinquecostatus, R. cuspidatus, R. panzeri and R. melanochaetus are widely distributed in Europe and are receiving growing attention because of their potential role as phytoplasma vectors. Identifying the Reptalus species is restricted to a few specialist entomologists and relies on the morphology of the male genitalia, hampering the identification of juveniles and females. This study provides the tools for species discrimination by integrating the morphological description, which is primarily for the genus identification, with new molecular assays, based on both ribosomal and mitochondrial DNA. PCR-RFLP assays carried out on the mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase I gene (COI) with AluI provided species-specific profiles for the four Reptalus species. Amplification of a ribosomal internal transcribed spacer (ITS2) region produced species-specific fragments of different sizes for R. quinquecostatus, R. melanochaetus, R. cuspidatus and R. panzeri. The digestion of the ITS2 PCR product with TaqI allowed the discrimination of these latter two species. This molecular identification key ensures reliable results and can be successfully applied not only to adults, but also to the nymphs feeding on the roots. The identification of the nymphs (i) extends the collection period of these monovoltine species to the whole year (adults are present for a short summer period) and (ii) allows the unambiguous identification of their actual host plants because nymphs are steady on the root system while adults tend to disperse onto other plants. Fast and reliable identification of the Reptalus species provides useful help in monitoring activities and, therefore, in designing rational control strategies to protect crops from phytoplasma infection.

Rapidly solidified Au80Fe20 ribbons were prepared either by melt spinning or by solidstate quenching of a homogenised master alloy. The as-quenched sample displays a paramagnetic behavior indicating a perfect solid solution of Fe in the Au matrix. Subsequent anneals have been performed to induce the precipitation of Fe particles. X-ray diffraction technique have been exploited to determine the alloy microstructure. The structural stability have been studied by measuring electrical properties in isothermal and tempering condition. The variation of magnetisation and electrical resistance have been measured after submitting the samples to plastic deformation. A logarithmic relaxation of the electrical resistance is observed in all studied samples after deformation. Magnetic hysteresis loops have been measured in as-quenched and annealed samples at different temperatures. X-ray diffraction and magnetic measurements indicate that thermal treatments have been successful in inducing the precipitation of both bcc and fcc Fe clusters.
