Reflectance Spectroscopy of Beidellites and Their Importance for Mars

Beidellites may exist on Mars and represent intermediate alteration products; their presence would indicate different alteration environments than previously identified because montmorillonite is a low-grade alteration mineral whereas beidellite is a higher-temperature alteration mineral, and often represents a step toward illite formation. The reflectance spectra of beidellites are under study to support their orbital detection on Mars, where spectral signatures of other Al-rich phyllosilicates have been observed. Reflectance spectra of ten Al-rich smectites are presented here which include pure beidellites and Al smectites having compositions between those of beidellite and montmorillonite, and emphasis is placed here on the OH combination bands near 4545 cm−1 (2.2 μm) as these vibrational features are commonly used in the identification of phyllosilicates on Mars. Shifts were observed in the Al2OH band centers, which occur near 4590 cm−1 (2.18 μm) in reflectance spectra of beidellite and near 4525 cm−1 (2.21 μm) in reflectance spectra of montmorillonite. These are compared with the Al2OH bending vibrations observed near 941–948 cm−1 (10.5–10.6 μm) for beidellite and near 918–926 cm−1 (10.8–10.9 μm) for montmorillonite. Although the octahedral site cation composition provides the greatest influence on the vibrational energies of the M2OH groups, the tetrahedral site cation composition also influences these vibrations. Shifts were observed in the Si-O-Al bending vibrations from 552 and 480 cm−1 (18.1 and 20.8 μm) in beidellite spectra to 544 and 475 cm−1 (18.4 and 21.0 μm) in montmorillonite spectra. Gaussian modeling of the 4545 cm−1 (2.2 μm) bands led to the discrimination of four overlapping bands in each of the ten Al smectite spectra examined in this study. Shifts in the band center and area of the primary spectral band are coordinated with substitution of Al for Si in the tetrahedral sheet. This is consistent with beidellites having a greater tetrahedral layer charge than montmorillonites. The observed spectral differences were sufficiently large that these Al-rich smectites can be differentiated in orbital data of Mars. A pure beidellite-type spectrum is observed in an isolated Al phyllosilicate-bearing outcrop in Libya Montes, a region where Fe-rich smectite is common but Al-rich smectite is rare. Beidellite-type reflectance spectra were also observed in one area of the Nili Fossae region. In contrast, a variety of Al phyllosilicates were found in the ancient rocks at Mawrth Vallis, including some smaller clay-bearing regions exhibiting spectral signatures more consistent with beidellite-like than montmorillonite-like chemistry.
Interpretation of Reflectance Spectra of Clay Mineral-Silica Mixtures: Implications for Martian Clay Mineralogy at Mawrth Vallis

The Al-clay-rich rock units at Mawrth Vallis, Mars, have been identified as mixtures of multiple components based on their spectral reflectance properties and the known spectral character of pure clay minerals. In particular, the spectral characteristics associated with the ~2.2 μm feature in Martian reflectance spectra indicate that mixtures of AlOH- and SiOH-bearing minerals are present. The present study investigated the spectral reflectance properties of the following binary mixtures to aid in the interpretation of remotely acquired reflectance spectra of rocks at Mawrth Vallis: kaolinite-opal-A, kaolinite-montmorillonite, montmorillonite-obsidian, montmorillonite-hydrated silica (opal), and glass-illite-smectite (where glass was hydrothermally altered to mixed-layer illite-smectite). The best spectral matches with Martian data from the present study’s laboratory experiments are mixtures of montmorillonite and obsidian having ~50% montmorillonite or mixtures of kaolinite and montmorillonite with ~30% kaolinite. For both of these mixtures the maximum inflection point on the long wavelength side of the 2.21 μm absorption feature is shifted to longer wavelengths, and in the case of the kaolinite-montmorillonite mixtures the 2.17 μm absorption found in kaolinite is of similar relative magnitude to that feature as observed in CRISM (Compact Reconnaissance Imaging Spectrometer for Mars) data. The reflectance spectra of clay mixed with opal and of hydrothermally altered glass-illite-smectite did not represent the Martian spectra observed in this region as well. A spectral comparison of linear vs. intimate mixtures of kaolinite and montmorillonite indicated that for these sieved samples, the intimate mixtures are very similar to the linear mixtures with the exception of the altered glass-illite-smectite samples. However, the 2.17 μm kaolinite absorption is stronger in the intimate mixtures than in the equivalent linear mixture. Modified Gaussian Modeling of absorption features observed in reflectance spectra of the kaolinite-montmorillonite mixtures indicated a strong correlation between percent kaolinite in the mixture and the ratio of the area of the 2.16 μm band found in kaolinite to the area of the 2.20 μm band found in montmorillonite.

Over the last 25 years, radiowave detection of neutrino-generated signals, using cold polar ice as the neutrino target, has emerged as perhaps the most promising technique for detection of extragalactic ultra-high energy neutrinos (corresponding to neutrino energies in excess of 0.01 Joules, or 1017 electron volts). During the summer of 2021 and in tandem with the initial deployment of the Radio Neutrino Observatory in Greenland (RNO-G), we conducted radioglaciological measurements at Summit Station, Greenland to refine our understanding of the ice target. We report the result of one such measurement, the radio-frequency electric field attenuation length $L_\alpha$. We find an approximately linear dependence of $L_\alpha$ on frequency with the best fit of the average field attenuation for the upper 1500 m of ice: $\langle L_\alpha \rangle = ( ( 1154 \pm 121) - ( 0.81 \pm 0.14) \, ( \nu /{\rm MHz}) ) \,{\rm m}$ for frequencies ν ∈ [145 − 350] MHz.

US public health laboratories began reporting Escherichia coli O157 isolates to CDC in 1996. We describe temporal and geographical patterns of isolates reported from 1996 to 2011 and demographics of persons whose specimens yielded isolates. We calculated annual E. coli O157 isolation rates/100 000 persons by patient's state of residence, county of residence, age, and sex using census data. The average annual isolation rate was 0·84. The average isolation rate in northern states (1·52) was higher than in southern states (0·43). Counties with ⩾76% rural population had a lower isolation rate (0·67) than counties with ⩽25%, 26–50%, and 51–75% rural populations (0·81, 0·92, and 0·81, respectively). The highest isolation rate (3·19) was in children aged 1–4 years. Infections were seasonal with 49% of isolates collected during July to September. Research into reasons for higher incidence in northern states and for seasonality could guide strategies to prevent illnesses.

This expedition to Iceland was concerned with ice depth soundings of the largest ice cap in Europe and involved both the development of impulse radar systems and the use of satellite survey equipment for locating experimental stations and ice depth traverses (Fig 1). Vatnajökull, which translated means ‘water-ice’, is a temperate ice sheet and measures approximately 140 km east to west and 100 km north to south, thereby occupying more space than all other glaciers in Europe combined. Ice depth studies had previously been limited to seismic experiments conducted during the French-Icelandic expedition of 1951 when some 33 individual soundings were recorded. A few gravitational studies have also been made. It was not until 1976, however, that a first glacier base profile was obtained by a joint Cambridge-Icelandic expedition using electronic equipment developed at the University of Cambridge (see Polar Record, Vol 18, No 115, p 375–77). From that expedition some understanding of the electrical properties of ice was deduced and it became possible to design equipment that, theoretically, could measure the deepest parts of the ice cap. It was agreed in Reykjavik, in July 1976, to carry out a joint expedition in 1977 using a Mark II British instrument to survey Vatnajökull, at least in part, time and weather permitting. Owing to unforseen difficulties it was only possible for Cambridge University members to carry out this work.
Characterization of Theileria parva which infects waterbuck (Kobus defassa)

Theileria-free waterbuck (Kobus defassa) born in captivity were successfully infected with Theileria parva sporozoites derived from ticks infected by feeding on African buffalo (Syncerus caffer). All waterbuck underwent mild infections with the development of sporadic schizont and piroplasm parasitosis when inoculated with sporozoite doses lethal to cattle. A carrier state of T. parva was demonstrated by feeding clean R. appendiculatus nymphs on two of these infected waterbuck. Tick batches from these waterbuck on 2 of 5 occasions transmitted lethal Theileria infections to cattle. In a separate experiment, waterbuck cells were infected and transformed in vitro by T. parva sporozoites derived from buffalo but not by cattle-derived T. parva (Muguga) sporozoites. Waterbuck cells infected in vitro with T. parva isolated from buffalo were inoculated into autologous waterbuck but no infections developed. Theileria parva isolates generated in this study from various sources were characterized using anti-T. parva schizont monoclonal antibodies (MAbs), and it was found that buffalo-derived and waterbuck-passaged isolates had different profiles. Species-specific synthetic oligonucleotide probes, restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) analysis with cloned T. parva DNA probes, and DNA sequence analysis of the p67 sporozoite antigen gene confirmed that the waterbuck-passaged parasite was T. parva. The Tpr repetitive probe hybridization patterns from the waterbuck-passaged parasites were different from the other samples tested. The ribosomal genotype of the waterbuck-passaged T. parva was similar to that of cattle-derived T. parva Muguga. Analyses with both probes and MAbs suggested that a minor parasite population present within the T. parva 7014 buffalo- derived stock had been selected during waterbuck passage. A variable region of the p67 sporozoite antigen gene of the waterbuck-passaged T. parva was similar to that of cattle-derived T. parva stocks and different from that of buffalo- derived parasites. Based on these results, methods were suggested to confirm and quantitate the involvement of waterbuck in the epidemiology of cattle theileriosis.

Twenty 9- to 12-year-olds with specific language impairment (SLI) were compared with 18 age-matched controls on auditory discrimination tasks, using a three-interval, two-alternative forced-choice format. The first task used minimal word pairs in silence and in noise. Nonspeech tasks involved discriminating direction of frequency glides and had two versions: (a) the glide moved from 500 to 1500 Hz, and duration was adaptively decreased; (b) all glides lasted 250 ms, and the frequency range was adaptively modified until a threshold was reached. Control and SLI groups did not differ on the glide tasks. Around half the children in both groups accurately discriminated 20 ms glides. There was a small but significant group difference on the speech-in-noise task, and scores were weakly related to literacy level. Perception of brief, transient, nonspeech stimuli is not abnormal in the majority of school-aged children with SLI.

The accidental melting of radioactive sources is impossible to prevent completely because some radioactive sources are extremely difficult to detect. When a radioactive source is melted, the people involved have concern for their safety, and there can also be very large costs to the steel plant. The aim of this study, sponsored by the European Commission, has been to give guidance to steel makers on the radiation safety aspects of an incident, and on what measures should be taken to minimize the impact on the steel plant.

Grammatical specific language impairment (G-SLI) has been proposed as a distinct subtype of language impairment. We assessed a large sample of twins between the ages of 7 and 13 years on language comprehension tests sensitive to G-SLI. The sample included 37 same-sex twin pairs selected for the presence of language impairment (LI) in one or both twins and 104 twin pairs from the general population. The number and patterns of errors in those with LI replicated findings from previous studies of G-SLI. Qualitative markers of G-SLI were derived from the tests. Out of 144 children for whom complete data were available, 2 scored positive on all five markers and 9 scored positive on four of the five markers. Most children who made grammatical errors characteristic of G-SLI had co-occurring deficits in other areas. These results raise questions for theories that treat this disorder as an all-or-none modular deficit.

The impact of mixed, nematode infection upon a group of animals will depend upon the number of nematodes present, how they are distributed among hosts and whether individuals that are heavily parasitized with one species are more likely to be heavily parasitized with other species. A survey of over 500 six-month-old, Scottish Blackface lambs from a single farm in Southwest Strathclyde identified 7 different categories of nematodes in the abomasum and small intestine. There were considerable differences among years and among nematodes in the prevalence and mean intensity of infection. Ostertagia circumcincta was present in nearly all lambs and judged by prevalence and intensity is one of the most successful of all parasitic nematodes. Each category of nematodes had a skewed distribution; most animals had relatively few worms but a small proportion had many worms. The variances of the number of nematodes in each category were approximately equal to the square of the mean. The counts of adult O. circumcincta followed a negative binomial distribution, but the negative binomial distribution did not provide a good description of the observed values for the other species. These other species had a lower prevalence and possibly some sheep were not exposed to infection. There was no significant genetic variation among lambs in the number of nematodes present and therefore the differences among these lambs were unlikely to be a consequence of genetic differences in host susceptibility. Lambs with increased numbers of one species were more likely to have increased numbers of the other species, but the correlations were weak and may reflect covariation in exposure to different parasites.
Bandgap Shifting of an Ultra-Thin InGaAs/InP Quantum Well Infrared Photodetector via Rapid Thermal Annealing

We demonstrate that SiO2 cap rapid thermal annealing in ultra-thin p-type InGaAs/InP quantum wells can be used to produce large blue shifts of the band edge. A substantial bandgap blue shift, as much as 292.5 meV at 900°C has been measured and the value of the bandgap shift can be controlled by the anneal time. Theoretical modeling of the intermixing effect on the energy levels is performed based on the effective bond-orbital method, and we obtain a very good fit to the photoluminescence data. Compared to the as-grown detector, the peak spectral response of the annealed detector was shifted to longer wavelength without any major degradation in the responsivity characteristics.

A monolithic quantum well infrared photodetector (QWIP) structure has been presented that is suitable for dual bands in the two atmospheric transmission windows of 3 – 5.3 μm and 7.5 – 14μm, respectively. The proposed structure employs dual stacked, strain InGaAs/AlGaAs and latticematched GaAs/AlGaAs quantum well infrared photodetector for mid wavelength and long wavelength detection. The response peak of the strain InGaAs/AlGaAs quantum well is at 4.9 μm and the lattice-matched GaAs/AlGaAs is at 10.5μm; their peak sensitivities are in the spectral regions of 3 – 5.3mu;m and 7.5 – 14μm. The peak responsivity when the dual-band QWIP is biased at 5 Volts is ∼0.065A/W at 4.9μm and ∼0.006A/W at 10.5μm; at this voltage the dual-band QWIP is more sensitive at the shorter wavelengths due to its larger impedance thus exhibiting wavelength tunability characteristics with bias. Additionally, single colored 4.9 and 10.5μm QWIPs were fabricated from the dual-band QWIP structure to study the bias-dependent behavior and also to understand the effects of growing the strain layer InGaAs/AlGaAs QWIP on top of the lattice-matched GaAs/AlGaAs QWIP. In summary, two stack dual-band QWIPs using GaAs/AlGaAs and strained InGaAs/AlGaAs multiquantum wells have been demonstrated with peak spectral sensitivities in the spectral region of 3 – 5.3μm and 7.5 – 14μm. Also, the voltage tunable dual-band detection have been realized for this kind of QWIP structure.

P-type InGaAs/InP quantum-well infrared photodetectors operated at 4.55 μm require the growth of ultra-thin (10 Å) quantum wells. We report a study of interfaces in QWIPs grown by gas-source molecular beam epitaxy in which we optimized the group V source supply sequence so that a 6 K photoluminescence linewidth as narrow as 8.4 meV was observed from a structure with 10 Å wells. Analysis of the PL suggests that interface roughness was minimized. Cross-sectional scanning tunneling microscopy, double crystal x-ray diffraction, and cross-sectional tunneling electron microscopy confirmed that high-quality interfaces and uniform layers were obtained. Using the derived structural parameters, photocurrent spectral response was theoretically predicted for these QWIPs and then experimentally verified.
Growth and Characterization of AlGaN/GaN Heterostructures with Multiple Quantum Wells by PAMBE

AlGaN/GaN heterostructures with multiple quantum wells were grown by plasmaassisted molecular beam epitaxy (PAMBE). Structural and optical properties of the heterostructures were analyzed using x-ray diffraction, cathodoldminescence, and photoluminescence. Interband transitions were clearly observed in the GaN quantum wells at both room- and liquid-helium temperatures. The efficiency of the interband recombination due to the confinement effect was greatly enhanced in the thinner quantum wells. The functional dependence of the interband peaks on the well thickness is shown to be in good agreement with the calculated positions of the quantized levels in the wells.

A shift in the peak response wavelength and a broadening of the photoresponse spectrum is demonstrated for intersubband absorption in n-doped GaAs/AIGaAs multiple quantum well detectors following intermixing of the well and barrier layers during rapid thermal annealing. In general, a decrease in performance is observed for the RTA QWIPs when compared to the as-grown detectors. The peak absolute response of the annealed QWIPs is lower by almost a factor of four, which results in corresponding decrease in quantum efficiency. In addition, the noise performance results in a detectivity which is five times lower than that of QWIPs fabricated from as-grown structures.
Relationship between puberty in heifers and the cessation of luteal activity after nutritional restriction

The relationship between puberty and the cessation of luteal activity after nutritional restriction was evaluated in 15 Angus × Hereford heifers. Heifers attained puberty at a body weight of 297 (s.e. 6) kg and a body condition score (BCS) of 5·5 (s.e. 0·1) on a scale of 1 (emaciated) to 9 (obese). After 154 (s.e. 16) days of nutritional restriction, heifers became anoestrus at a weight of 273 (s.e. 8) kg and a BCS of 3·0 (s.e. 0·2). The Spearman's rank correlation coefficient between date of-puberty and date of cessation of luteal activity was (r = –0·49; P < 0·06). This indicates that the heifers that attained puberty first were the last to cease luteal activity during nutritional restriction.
