PILOT (the Pathfinder for an International Large Optical Telescope) is a proposed 2.5-m optical/infrared telescope to be located at Dome C on the Antarctic plateau. The atmospheric conditions at Dome C deliver a high sensitivity, high photometric precision, wide-field, high spatial resolution, and high-cadence imaging capability to the PILOT telescope. These capabilities enable a unique scientific potential for PILOT, which is addressed in this series of papers. The current paper presents a series of projects dealing with the distant (redshift >1) Universe, that have been identified as key science drivers for the PILOT facility. The potential for PILOT to detect the first populations of stars to form in the early Universe, via infrared projects searching for pair-instability supernovae and gamma-ray burst afterglows, is investigated. Two projects are proposed to examine the assembly and evolution of structure in the Universe: an infrared survey searching for the first evolved galaxies at high redshift, and an optical survey aimed at characterising moderate-redshift galaxy clusters. Finally, a large-area weak-lensing survey and a program to obtain supernova infrared light-curves are proposed to examine the nature and evolution of dark energy and dark matter.

PILOT (the Pathfinder for an International Large Optical Telescope) is a proposed 2.5-m optical/infrared telescope to be located at Dome C on the Antarctic plateau. Conditions at Dome C are known to be exceptional for astronomy. The seeing (above ∼30 m height), coherence time, and isoplanatic angle are all twice as good as at typical mid-latitude sites, while the water-vapour column, and the atmosphere and telescope thermal emission are all an order of magnitude better. These conditions enable a unique scientific capability for PILOT, which is addressed in this series of papers. The current paper presents an overview of the optical and instrumentation suite for PILOT and its expected performance, a summary of the key science goals and observational approach for the facility, a discussion of the synergies between the science goals for PILOT and other telescopes, and a discussion of the future of Antarctic astronomy. Paper II and Paper III present details of the science projects divided, respectively, between the distant Universe (i.e. studies of first light, and the assembly and evolution of structure) and the nearby Universe (i.e. studies of Local Group galaxies, the Milky Way, and the Solar System).

In Southdown sheep, which grazed and were fed during the day to maintain body weight and were housed at night, there was no clear effect of ambient temperature on hoof growth. In these sheep, equatorial or reversed photoperiods did not influence hoof growth.
In an indoor experiment over 19 months on Merino sheep, with natural light and temperature, fleece accumulated normally between spring shearings. Hoof growth in winter was low at a low level of nutrition but was not reduced in sheep at a higher nutritional level. It fell dramatically at both levels of nutrition in the first month after shearing.
Hoof growth was measured in Merino and Southdown sheep exposed to equatorial daylength in two climate-room experiments in which ambient temperature was varied. Fleece length was kept short and nearly constant by clipping. Hoof growth was greatly reduced by low temperature. At a given ambient temperature it was more rapid when ambient temperature was rising from month to month than when it was falling. The low hoof growth observed in the cold was associated with low hoof temperature and there was some evidence suggestive of reduced blood flow to the skin of the lower legs.
These temperature effects would complicate the use of hoof growth as an index of nutrition.

The excitation characteristics of the current-driven ion acoustic instability are studied, using a linearized kinetic model for a weakly ionized, unmagnetized plasma. Convective instability is predicted for typical low-pressure positive column conditions. The calculated spatial growth rates show a variation with frequency, which is similar to that of the amplitude variation with frequency of the self-excited instability measured in our positive column experiments in helium and argon. The comparison between theory and experiment indicates that ion Landau damping is significant for typical experimental conditions.

Surveys by digital side-scan sonar, RoxAnnTM acoustic ground discrimination systems, multibeam echosounder and a sub-bottom profiling system showed that a Modiolus modiolus reef, in the Irish Sea off Pen Llŷn, north-west Wales, had a distinctive morphology and acoustic characteristics. The extent of the reef could therefore be determined and the benthic structure reliably mapped. The biogenic reef is in an area with moderately strong tidal currents and overlays lag gravel and cobbles with patchy sand veneers. The mussels form an undulating surface, orientated perpendicular to the current, with an average wavelength of 11.7 m and amplitude of 0.24 m that is significantly different from the surrounding seabed. Reef deposits reach a thickness of 1 m on top of the underlying lag gravels. The characteristic reef surface morphology helps distinguish the reef from the surrounding seabed on side-scan sonar and multibeam echosounder records and the undulations create the spatial complexity that influences the small-scale distribution of the associated epifauna, and infauna, reported in papers II and III of this series. The M. modiolus reef was recorded in the same location 40 y ago and has probably persisted there for over 150 y. Monitoring implications are discussed.

High-dielectric constant (high-κ) oxide growth on hexagonal-GaN (on sapphire) is examined for potential use in enhancement-mode metal oxide semiconductor field effect transistor (MOSFET). Enhancement-mode MOSFET devices (ns > 4×1013 cm−2) offer significant performance advantages, such as greater efficiency and scalability, as compared to heterojunction field effect transistor (HFET) devices for use in high power and high frequency GaN-based devices. High leakage current and current collapse at high drive conditions suggests that the use of a high-κ insulating layer is principle for enhancement-mode MOSFET development. In this work, rare earth oxides (Sc, La, etc.) are explored due to their ideal combination of permittivity and high band gap energy. However, a substantial lattice mismatch (9-21%) between the rare earth oxides and the GaN substrate results in mid-gap defect state densities and growth dislocations. The epitaxial growth of the rare earth oxides by molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) on native oxide passivated-GaN is examined in an effort to minimize these growth related defects and other growth-related limitations. Growth of the oxide on GaN is characterized analytically by RHEED, XRD, and XPS. Preliminary MOS electrical analysis of a 50 Å La2O3 on GaN shows superior leakage performance as compared to significantly thicker Si3N4 dielectric.

Feeding lowland sheep on straw-based systems during pregnancy is practised on many livestock/arable farms. Simple mixes of molassed sugar beet feed and distillers dark grains have been cost effective supplements for March-lambing ewes fed straw and produced satisfactory ewe and lamb performance (Chapple et al., 1998 and 2001). An ensiled mix of pressed sugar beet pulp and dried maize distillers grains (Praize, Trident Feeds) has been fed as the sole diet for finishing lambs (Pattinson et al., 2001) but there is little information on feeding Praize to pregnant ewes. The objective of this study was to compare ewe and lamb performance when March-lambing ewes were fed on a straw-based system and supplemented with either a cereal/protein home-mix, Praize or one of two dried sugar beet pulp/protein mixes.

If G is a finite group, then the usual version of the Green correspondence applies to finitely generated kG-modules when k is a field of characteristic p > 0 or a p-adic ring. The paper presents a categorical version of the Green correspondence and a version of the Burry–Carlson–Puig theorem that remain valid for arbitrary modules and coefficient rings. In this generality, however, it is not clear whether the Green correspondent of a finitely generated module is always finitely generated.

Adherent diamond coatings up to ∼35 um thick have been grown by microwave plasma CVD (MPCVD) on sintered tungsten carbide (WC) substrates and their erosive wear properties investigated under high velocity air-sand erosion testing. Two different sintered tungsten carbide (WC) substrates have been investigated and compared, the binder being either 6%Co or 5%Ni by weight. Coating properties are sensitive functions of surface pre-treatment and deposition procedures. Adherent coatings offer significantly better erosion resistance compared to uncoated substrates, with the erosion rate being lower by up to a factor between ∼5 and 20 for particle test velocities of 148 ms-1 and 63 ms-1 respectively. Films with low residual stress appear to exhibit longer times to failure which tends to occur catastrophically along the coating-substrate interface.

Single crystals of R1Ba2Cu3O7–8, (R=Y, Eu and Gd), have been irradiated with 0.4–1.0 MeV electrons in directions near the c-axis. An incident threshold electron energy for producing flux pinning defects has been found. In-situ TME studies found no visible defects induced by electron irradiation. This means that point defects or small clusters ( ≤ 20 Å) are responsible for the extra pinning. A consistent interpretation of the data suggests that the most likely pinning defect is the displacement of a Cu atom from the CuO2 planes.

An experiment was conducted during 2 years to evaluate industry Coopworth, industry Romney and Waihora Romney ewes (a strain selected for 10 years for increased ewe productivity) in a variety of nutritional and management treatment combinations. Waihora Romneys were most productive with small and inconsistent differences between industry Romneys and Coopworths. Conventional cross-classified analyses of variance did not reveal large, consistent nor economically important ewe genotype × nutritional treatment or year interactions. Additional analyses were designed to investigate whether the ewe genotypes responded to changes in the nutritional and(or) management environment with similar quantitative changes in production. A sensitive genotype would be one that responded to environmental changes with relatively large changes in productivity; a stable genotype would be one whose changes in production in response to a variable environment were smaller. By several statistical procedures designed to assess relative ‘sensitivity’ v. ‘stability’, Waihora Romney ewes appeared to be the most stable, with industry Romney and Coopworth ewes similar in their sensitivity.

The radial pulsations of very luminous, low-mass models (L/M ˜ 104, solar units), which are possible representatives of the R CrB stars, have been examined. These pulsations are extremely nonadia–batic. We find that there are in some cases at least one extra (“strange”) mode which makes interpretation difficult. The blue instability edges are also peculiar, in that there is an abrupt excursion of the blue edge to the blue for L/M sufficiently large. The range of periods of the model encompasses observed periods of the Cepheid-like pulsations of actual R CrB stars.

Summary
Abstract
We propose primal-chaos black holes (PCBHs) as candidates for the missing mass. Beginning with a discussion of the mystery of the missing mass, in its various formulations, we motivate PCBHs as “dark matter.” Envisioning black hole production from colliding gravity waves, we develop a model of time symmetric, axially symmetric gravity waves by making use of the Brill methodology. Through numerical spectral-element techniques, the geometry of space is determined. We discuss trapped surfaces as the signatures of impending collapse to a black hole, and are thereby able to identify, through numerical relaxation, which geometries will undergo gravitational collapse. We are thus able to determine the critical wave amplitude at which black hole production from imploding gravity waves begins. We conclude with a brief discussion of observational limits.
Introduction
“I just can't understand it. All the young men I know are retiring.” So exclaimed Mrs. Niels Bohr in a post-war visit to Princeton on seeing Paul Dirac look from floor to ceiling and back again to floor in a desperate effort to answer her question, “Who is there now at Cambridge? Is Robert Frisch still there?”
“Frisch is retiring. I cannot remember who else is there, except me.”
Any thought of Brill retiring is foreign to anyone who sees him in action, as vigorous now as he was in his Princeton undergraduate (A.B. 1954) and graduate (Ph. D. 1959) days.
