A flagship for Austral temperate forest conservation: an action plan for Darwin's frogs brings key stakeholders together

Darwin's frogs Rhinoderma darwinii and Rhinoderma rufum are the only known species of amphibians in which males brood their offspring in their vocal sacs. We propose these frogs as flagship species for the conservation of the Austral temperate forests of Chile and Argentina. This recommendation forms part of the vision of the Binational Conservation Strategy for Darwin's Frogs, which was launched in 2018. The strategy is a conservation initiative led by the IUCN SSC Amphibian Specialist Group, which in 2017 convened 30 governmental, non-profit and private organizations from Chile, Argentina and elsewhere. Darwin's frogs are iconic examples of the global amphibian conservation crisis: R. rufum is categorized as Critically Endangered (Possibly Extinct) on the IUCN Red List, and R. darwinii as Endangered. Here we articulate the conservation planning process that led to the development of the conservation strategy for these species and present its main findings and recommendations. Using an evidence-based approach, the Binational Conservation Strategy for Darwin's Frogs contains a comprehensive status review of Rhinoderma spp., including critical threat analyses, and proposes 39 prioritized conservation actions. Its goal is that by 2028, key information gaps on Rhinoderma spp. will be filled, the main threats to these species will be reduced, and financial, legal and societal support will have been achieved. The strategy is a multi-disciplinary, transnational endeavour aimed at ensuring the long-term viability of these unique frogs and their particular habitat.

We have studied the Pulsed-Laser Melting (PLM) effects on Ti implanted GaP to form an Intermediate Band (IB). Structural analysis has been carried out by means of Time of Flight Secondary Ion Mass Spectroscopy (ToF-SIMS), Raman spectroscopy and Glancing Incidence X-Ray Diffraction (GIXRD). After the PLM annealing, Ti concentration is over the Mott limit. Nevertheless, the Raman spectra show a forbidden TO vibrational mode of GaP. This result suggests the formation of crystalline domains with a different orientation in the annealed region regarding to the GaP unannealed substrate. This conclusion has been corroborated by GIXRD measurements. As a result of the polycrystalline lattice, a drop of the mobility is produced.

We have analyzed the degree of crystalline lattice recovery in samples implanted with Ti concentrations well above the Mott limit and subsequently Pulsed-Laser Melting (PLM) annealed by means of Raman spectroscopy and Rutherford Backscattering Spectroscopy (RBS). Since very recently, theoretical studies predicted Ti interstitial sites for the Intermediate Band (IB) formation, the knowledge of the Ti impurity lattice location after PLM annealing is an essential point that can be elucidated by means of RBS measurements. After PLM annealings, Raman and RBS measurements have shown a decrease in the lattice crystalline quality as implanted dose is increased, yielding a significantly improvement of the lattice quality at the highest energy density studied. The RBS channeling spectra show that after PLM annealings Ti impurities are mostly occupying interstitial lattice sites.
ToF-SIMS Study of Pulsed Laser Melting Energy Density on Ti Implanted Si for Intermediate Band

An exhaustive study on the resulting impurity profile in Si samples implanted with Ti with high doses and subsequently Pulsed-Laser Melting (PLM) annealed is presented. Two different effects are shown to be present in the two different stages of the annealing. In the melting stage the box-shaped effect tends to increase the thickness of the implanted layer and to decrease the maximum peak concentration as the energy density of the annealing increases. On the contrary, in the solidifying stage, the snow-plow effect decreases the thickness of the layer and increases the maximum peak concentration as the energy density of the annealing increases. Moreover, as a direct consequence of the snow-plow effect, part of the impurities is expelled from the sample by the surface.
Substrate influence on the high-temperature annealing behavior of GaN: Si vs sapphire

We have studied the effects of rapid thermal annealing at 1300°C on GaN epilayers grown on AlN buffered Si(111) and on sapphire substrates. After annealing, the epilayers grown on Si display a stained surface. Scanning electron microscopy and optical confocal images revealed the presence of crater-shaped inhomogeneities that develop around protruding nuclei with tipically 50 micron diameter. Energy dispersive x-ray microanalysis yields a high concentration of Si in the crater regions as well as non-stoichiometric concentrations of Ga and N, with an excess of N.
Micro-Raman spectra obtained within the crater region exhibit Raman peaks associated with Si3N4 but no trace of GaN modes, while focused ion beam milling of this region leads to the accumulation of metallic Ga in the etched area. These results suggest that a substantial migration of Si from the substrate takes place during the annealing, which severely alters the material in the crater regions. Such annealing effects, which are not observed in GaN grown on sapphire, constitute a severe drawback for a widespread use of Si(111) substrates when high-temperature processing is required.

Summary
Introduction
The causes of preterm delivery can be viewed from a number of different perspectives. Similarly, the concept of “prevention of preterm delivery” can be approached in different ways. Causes can be conceptualized along the spectrum from macro-level social and political forces all the way to immediate biological antecedents of the event (Figure 3.1). Contributing causes of preterm delivery in an individual case could be poverty, cocaine use, and placental abruption, comprising a cascade of events that ultimately requires medical intervention and delivery before term. In principle, interventions to interrupt that cascade can be considered at any of the points along the way.
This chapter considers only a subset of possible determinants of preterm delivery. For those processes operating at the societal level, such as poverty and geography, the comments will be brief. Although the ultimate determinants of preterm delivery may be based on these societal forces, societal changes occur slowly, and preventive measures are urgently needed. Thus, our focus is on individual attributes and behaviors, with a particular focus on those that can be modified, such as tobacco use or physical exertion.
To lay a foundation for the chapter, we first discuss some concepts of causality as they relate to preterm delivery; then we describe key sociodemographic patterns associated with prematurity, as presented in Berkowitz and Papiernik's comprehensive 1993 review.

Summary
Introduction
In this chapter we will examine the nature of the southern boreal forest, explicitly its transition with the cool temperate deciduous forest that occurs to its south. Although this mixed deciduous and conifer forest occurs on portions of several continents in the northern hemisphere, it is most intact and most studied in North America as the northern hardwood and conifer biome (Braun 1950; Curtis 1959). Therefore, although we will describe this zone in other regions, we will concentrate on the North American expression of it. For convenience, we will also adopt the shortened common name ‘northern hardwoods’ for the cool temperate and largely deciduous forest to the south while recognizing that certain conifers are also important components of this forest.
The southern boreal forest contains extreme contrasts in ecosystem properties corresponding to the locations of different species within a mosaic landscape. These properties are accentuated at its boundary with the northern hardwoods and conifers, which are transitional to the deciduous forests to the south. Within these two biomes, each genus, and in some cases different species within each genus, affects ecosystem properties in different ways. Such properties include nutrient cycling and productivity, disturbance type and frequency, and suitability as an animal habitat. Consequently, there are strong feedbacks between succession, species dominance, resource limitation, disturbance regimes, and trophic structure (Fig. 8.1). These feedbacks may be stabilizing or destabilizing, the latter often causing cycles at various times and in various places.
