Criddleite, TlAg2Au3Sb10S10, a New Gold-Bearing Mineral from Hemlo, Ontario, Canada1

Criddleite, ideally TlAg2Au3Sb10S10, is a rare constituent within the Hemlo gold deposit, Hemlo, Ontario, Canada. The mineral occurs as 20 to 50 µm-sized lath-like, tabular or anhedral grains usually surrounding or penetrating aurostibite, or associated with native antimony, native gold and stibnite. Criddleite is opaque with a metallic lustre and a black streak. It has been synthesized by reacting TlSbS2 and high purity Ag, Au, Sb and S in an evacuated silica glass tube at 400 °C. The measured density of the synthetic material is 6.86; the calculated density is 6.57 g/cm3. The difference is due to minor admixed aurostibite, native antimony and a dyscrasite-like phase within the charge. VHN25 is 94–129. Mohs hardness (calc.) = 3–3 ½. In reflected plane-polarized light in air, natural criddleite is weakly bireflectant with a discernible reflectance pleochroism from grey-blue to slightly greenish grey-blue. The mineral has a distinct to moderate anisotropy with rotation tints in shades of buff to slate grey. Reflectance spectra and colour values for both natural and synthetic criddleite are given. X-ray study showed that synthetic criddleite is monoclinic (pseudotetragonal) with refined unit-cell parameters a = 20.015(2), b = 8.075(2), c = 7.831(2) Å, β = 92.01(2)°, V = 1264.9 ± 1.0 Å3 and a:b:c = 2.4786: 1:0.9698. The space group choices are A2/m(12), A2(5) or Am(8), diffraction aspect A*/*. The seven strongest lines in the X-ray powder diffraction pattern [d in Å (I) (hkl)] are: 5.63(90) (011), 3.91(50) (002), 3.456(50) (320), 2.860(70) (700), 2.813(100) (022), 2.018(60) (040) and 1.959(70) (004). Electron microprobe analyses are reported of natural criddleite in five polished sections of drill core from four holes. The averaged empirical formulae, based on 26 atoms, are Tl0.92Ag1.99Au2.93Sb9.87S10.28 (natural) and Tl0.94Ag2.03Au2.89Sb9.76S10.38 (synthetic).
Fossil Beetle Evidence for a Short Warm Interval near 40,000 yr B.P. at Titusville, Pennsylvania

A brief cold–warm–cold climate change during the middle Wisconsinan is described for the first time in North America, based on fossil beetle assemblages at Titusville, Pennsylvania. AMS dating of insect chitin and wood suggests the change occurred between 39,000 and 43,500 yr B.P. Basal peats in river terrace deposits contain arctic–subarctic beetle species representing a climate similar to that found at treeline in Canada, where mean July temperatures range from 10° to 13°C. These cold-adapted beetles were replaced by species representing a climate similar to the mixed coniferous–deciduous forests of southern Canada, where mean July temperatures range from 18° to 20°C. In turn, these warmer-adapted beetles were replaced by arctic–subarctic species in the upper part of the section, representing a climate with mean July temperatures in the range 10°–13°C. The brief warm interval is informally designated the Titusville interstade. The difference in temperature between the colder and warmer intervals is about 5°–7°C. The Titusville interstade is correlated with the Upton Warren Interstade of the British Isles which is of similar age and intensity. It is also correlated with the high sea-surface temperature interval between Heinrich events 4 and 5 represented in North Atlantic sediment cores.

The growing attention paid to the evaluation of health care has focused on hospitalbased techniques. Meanwhile, a variety of diagnostic, therapeutic, and administrative technologies have become important, though inadequately understood, additions to diverse health care settings outside of the hospital – notably ambulatory care centers, physicians' offices, and the home. This special section is devoted to an analysis of the technology used in these settings, particularly in the context of primary care.

An experimental study was conducted to measure the growth rates of mechanically generated surface water waves when subjected to a fully developed turbulent channel airflow. The study was designed to test the accuracy of the growth rates predicted by Miles's (1962b) theory. For a series of wave frequencies (from 2·04 to 6·04 Hz at 0·50 Hz increments) and centre-line wind velocities (0·20, 1·12 and 1·84 m/s) wave amplitudes were measured at three stations (2–21, 3–43 and 4·65 m) downwind from a wave generator. In addition, for centre-line velocities of 1–12 and 1·84 m/s, U* (the velocity at the outer edge of the viscous sublayer) and U1, (the shear velocity) were obtained from measured mean velocity and Reynolds stress profiles. The wave amplitude measurements at the wind velocity of 0·20 m/s provided attenuation rate estimates which agreed reasonably well with theoretical attenuation rates based on viscous effects both on the walls and in the bulk of the water. The amplitude measurements at the wind velocities of 1·12 and 1·84m/s provided growth rate estimates which were compared with theoretical growth rates (computed using the wave frequency, U1 and U* predicted by Miles's (1962b) theory. At 1·12m/s Miles's growth rateswere two to five times larger than those measured; at 1·84 m/s Miles's growth rates were about two times larger.

We give conditions which determine if cat of a map go up when extending over a cofibre. We apply this to reprove a result of Roitberg giving an example of a

Failure analysis in the microelectronic industry via TEM has long dealt with the specimen preparation spatial resolution problem—the ability to prepare useful TEM specimens at very small pre-selected locations. This problem is made more difficult with time because, while device structures become smaller and more dense, the failure rate of individual devices is extremely low and dropping. TEM analysts, therefore, must prepare specimens that optimally present a single faulty component within an ocean of a billion or more similar components. Sophisticated electrical testers can find the faulty component and transfer its coordinates to a FIB tool where the failure can be marked. Cross section TEM specimens are appropriate when it is suspected that the failure is caused by a defect in the stack of metal and insulators constructed on the top of the device substrate (usually silicon). Plan view TEM specimens are appropriate when the electrical signature of the failure indicates that the fault lies in the Si itself-dislocations or some other crystal defect.

Summary
Introduction
The practice and theory of modern central banking revolve around the inflationary tendencies inherent in the conflict between the short- and long-run effects of monetary expansion and in the temptations of monetary financing of government spending. They should also revolve around the conflict between the benefits of shielding the central bank from political pressures and the principle of accountability to the public of those who make critically important policy decisions.
The earliest central banks were set up to provide financing for governments, and to help develop the financial system, often by bringing order to the note issue. As the practice of central banking developed during the nineteenth century, the central bank took on the primary responsibility for protecting the stability of the financial system and the external value of the currency. The mandate given to the central bank in legislation passed during the 1930s and 1940s–in the Great Depression and the heyday of the Keynesian revolution–typically included both monetary stability and the promotion of full employment and maximum levels of production. Then, as the inflationary forces that destroyed the Bretton Woods system gathered strength in the 1960s and 1970s, the focus of monetary policy shifted to the maintenance of the domestic value of the currency.

Non-traumatic, sudden death in young patients has been described in several studies, but most of these studies have involved highly selected populations. This study examined consecutive cases of non-traumatic, prehospital, sudden death in young patients (age 2–35 years) in a six-year period in an urban EMS system. One-hundred-seven cases were identified; however, seven cases were excluded because of occult trauma or lack of documentation. Of the 100 cases studied, drug and/or toxin exposure was the most common etiology (32%), followed by cardiac (22%) and pulmonary (20%). This is the first study which describes all cases of non-traumatic, prehospital, sudden death in young patients presenting to an EMS system. Implications of these data for EMS personnel are discussed.

The dependence of the superconducting properties of RBa2Cu3−xMxOz (R = Y, Gd, M = Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, and x = 0.0, 0.025, 0.05, 0.1, 1.0, 3.0) on the oxidizing environment used during the processing (sintering/annealing) of these materials has been investigated. Samples of nominal composition, YBa2Cu3Oz, were prepared from the same starting materials and subjected to two different controlled heat treatments, under both controlled oxygen and ozone atmospheres. Measurements of ac electrical resistance versus temperature indicate that the critical temperatures are increased, and the widths of the superconducting transitions are narrowed for identically heat-treated samples when processed under ozone atmosphere rather than under an oxygen environment. Thermogravimetric analysis data indicate this trend to be correlated with increased oxygen content and thermal stability. This effect is also observable for materials with metal substitution for Cu, although the measured Tc's are generally lower for increased values of x. The End Game in Presidential Nominations

This study shows that a simple, empirically derived rule accounts well for the outcome of multi-ballot, majority-rule conventions in the period 1848-1948 and that the same rule would have enabled one to predict correctly the outcome of all contested presidential nominations since 1952 before any candidate had achieved majority support in the Associated Press'polls of delegates. The rule's success suggests two conclusions about the behavior of delegates: (1) that their guesses about outcomes are based on objective cues, similarly interpreted, and (2) that the trend in voting for candidates, in addition to the level of support they attract, is an important element of such cues. The study's findings also suggest that delegates in recent years do not contrast sharply with their predecessors in their predilection for bandwagon voting.
