The discovery of the first electromagnetic counterpart to a gravitational wave signal has generated follow-up observations by over 50 facilities world-wide, ushering in the new era of multi-messenger astronomy. In this paper, we present follow-up observations of the gravitational wave event GW170817 and its electromagnetic counterpart SSS17a/DLT17ck (IAU label AT2017gfo) by 14 Australian telescopes and partner observatories as part of Australian-based and Australian-led research programs. We report early- to late-time multi-wavelength observations, including optical imaging and spectroscopy, mid-infrared imaging, radio imaging, and searches for fast radio bursts. Our optical spectra reveal that the transient source emission cooled from approximately 6 400 K to 2 100 K over a 7-d period and produced no significant optical emission lines. The spectral profiles, cooling rate, and photometric light curves are consistent with the expected outburst and subsequent processes of a binary neutron star merger. Star formation in the host galaxy probably ceased at least a Gyr ago, although there is evidence for a galaxy merger. Binary pulsars with short (100 Myr) decay times are therefore unlikely progenitors, but pulsars like PSR B1534+12 with its 2.7 Gyr coalescence time could produce such a merger. The displacement (~2.2 kpc) of the binary star system from the centre of the main galaxy is not unusual for stars in the host galaxy or stars originating in the merging galaxy, and therefore any constraints on the kick velocity imparted to the progenitor are poor.

We examine the roles of actuaries in UK life offices, along with trends, challenges to and opportunities for actuaries. We carry out an analysis of senior roles in life offices, a questionnaire survey and interviews with relevant senior personnel. We find that actuaries occupy many important roles in life offices and are regarded as having good industry knowledge and technical skills, especially in financial modelling. There are fewer executive directors and more non-executive directors of life offices who are actuaries compared with the position in 1990. A higher proportion of reserved roles is outsourced to consultants than was the case in 1990. Only a small number of Actuarial Function Holders are directors. Actuaries are more siloed than was the case in the past, although actuaries are well represented in the finance and risk functions of many offices. Although actuarial work in connection with the preparation for Solvency II will decline, there will be important ongoing requirements for actuaries following Solvency II implementation. We also see opportunities for actuaries in four areas: in risk management, in financial analysis and management based on Solvency II and international financial reporting standards, in connection with “big data”, and in product development and the customer proposition. There are implications for the examination syllabus, continuing professional development and research.

The Dominion Radio Astrophysical Observatory (DRAO) is carrying out a survey as part of an international collaboration to image the northe, at a common resolution, in emission from all major constituents of the interstellar medium; the neutral atomic gas, the molecular gas, the ionised gas, dust and relativistic plasma. For many of these constituents the angular resolution of the images (1 arcmin) will be more than a factor of 10 better than any previous studies. The aim is to produce a publicly-available database of high resolution, high-dynamic range images of the Galaxy for multi-phase studies of the physical states and processes in the interstellar medium. We will sketch the main scientific motivations as well as describe some preliminary results from the Canadian Galactic Plane Survey/Releve Canadien du Plan Galactique (CGPS/RCPG).

A survey of the Milky Way disk and the Magellanic System at the wavelengths of the 21-cm atomic hydrogen (H i) line and three 18-cm lines of the OH molecule will be carried out with the Australian Square Kilometre Array Pathfinder telescope. The survey will study the distribution of H i emission and absorption with unprecedented angular and velocity resolution, as well as molecular line thermal emission, absorption, and maser lines. The area to be covered includes the Galactic plane (|b| < 10°) at all declinations south of δ = +40°, spanning longitudes 167° through 360°to 79° at b = 0°, plus the entire area of the Magellanic Stream and Clouds, a total of 13 020 deg2. The brightness temperature sensitivity will be very good, typically σT≃ 1 K at resolution 30 arcsec and 1 km s−1. The survey has a wide spectrum of scientific goals, from studies of galaxy evolution to star formation, with particular contributions to understanding stellar wind kinematics, the thermal phases of the interstellar medium, the interaction between gas in the disk and halo, and the dynamical and thermal states of gas at various positions along the Magellanic Stream.

Isolates of avian trypanosomes from nestling sparrowhawks (Accipiter nisus) and from Simulium latipes were compared by isoenzyme electrophoresis with the previously described avian trypanosomes Trypanosoma corvi and T. everetti. Simulium isolates developed into trypomastigotes in semi-defined medium at 37 °C confirming that they belong to the genus Trypanosoma. Cellulose acetate electrophoresis (CAE) and polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (PAGE) methods were employed. A total of 11 enzymes was examined, of which 8 gave satisfactory results for all lysates (MDH, ICD, PGM, 6PGD, SOD, PEP I, PEP II and PEP D). The zymograms of 3 isolates from Simulium and 4 from A. nisus were similar indicating that they were the same organism and the isoenzyme patterns coincided with those of T. corvi. It is concluded that A. nisus and S. latipes are infected with T. corvi. Flagellate infections were found in the midgut, hindgut and rectum of Simulium where large numbers of epimastigotes were found in the lumen and attached to the cuticular intima of the rectal ampullae by hemidesmosomes at the distal end of an expanded flagellum. Out of 285 nestling sparrowhawks 13 (5%) were infected with trypanosomes. In view of their age and inability to preen themselves it is suggested they became infected via infected prey.

Background
Interpersonal communication problems are common among persons with schizophrenia and may be linked, in part, to deficits in theory of mind (ToM), the ability to accurately perceive the attitudes, beliefs and intentions of others. Particular difficulties might be expected in the processing of counterfactual information such as sarcasm or lies.
MethodThe present study included 50 schizophrenia or schizo-affective out-patients and 44 demographically comparable healthy adults who were administered Part III of The Awareness of Social Inference Test (TASIT; a measure assessing comprehension of sarcasm versus lies) as well as measures of positive and negative symptoms and community functioning.
ResultsTASIT data were analyzed using a 2 (group: patients versus healthy adults)×2 (condition: sarcasm versus lie) repeated-measures ANOVA. The results show significant effects for group, condition, and the group×condition interaction. Compared to controls, patients performed significantly worse on sarcasm but not lie scenes. Within-group contrasts showed that patients performed significantly worse on sarcasm versus lie scenes; controls performed comparably on both. In patients, performance on TASIT showed a significant correlation with positive, but not negative, symptoms. The group and interaction effects remained significant when rerun with a subset of patients with low-level positive symptoms. The findings for a relationship between TASIT performance and community functioning were essentially negative.
ConclusionsThe findings replicate a prior demonstration of difficulty in the comprehension of sarcasm using a different test, but are not consistent with previous studies showing global ToM deficits in schizophrenia.

Background
Schizophrenia patients show disturbances on a range of tasks that assess mentalizing or ‘Theory of Mind’ (ToM). However, these tasks are often developmentally inappropriate, make large demands on verbal abilities and explicit problem-solving skills, and involve after-the-fact reflection as opposed to spontaneous mentalizing.
MethodTo address these limitations, 55 clinically stable schizophrenia out-patients and 44 healthy controls completed a validated Animations Task designed to assess spontaneous attributions of social meaning to ambiguous abstract visual stimuli. In this paradigm, 12 animations depict two geometric shapes ‘interacting’ with each other in three conditions: (1) ToM interactions that elicit attributions of mental states to the agents, (2) Goal-Directed (GD) interactions that elicit attributions of simple actions, and (3) Random scenes in which no interaction occurs. Verbal descriptions of each animation are rated for the degree of Intentionality attributed to the agents and for accuracy.
ResultsPatients had lower Intentionality ratings than controls for ToM and GD scenes but the groups did not significantly differ for Random scenes. The descriptions of the patients less closely matched the situations intended by the developers of the task. Within the schizophrenia group, performance on the Animations Task showed minimal associations with clinical symptoms.
ConclusionsPatients demonstrated disturbances in the spontaneous attribution of mental states to abstract visual stimuli that normally evoke such attributions. Hence, in addition to previously established impairment on mentalizing tasks that require logical inferences about others' mental states, individuals with schizophrenia show disturbances in implicit aspects of mentalizing.

It is well established that dietary protein supply can influence the peri-parturient breakdown of immunity to nematode parasites but there is no information on the importance of exposure to nematode larvae during pregnancy for this response. We investigated this by exposing housed pregnant sheep, scanned as carrying two lambs, to a vaccinating infection with a trickle mixed infection of Teladorsagia circumcincta and Trichostrongylus colubriformis larvae (L3) or to no infection during weeks − 9 to − 4 relative to parturition. At the beginning of week − 3 all sheep were treated with anthelmintic to remove any vaccinating worm burden and from week − 2 to week +6 received a trickle challenge infection with the same nematodes. Within each vaccinating treatment there were two nutritional treatments (no. = 20 per subgroup) designed to provide 1.5 or 1.0 and 1.3 or 0.8 of metabolisable protein (MP) requirement during pregnancy and lactation, respectively. Five ewes were necropsied during weeks +1 and +3 to measure worm burdens and mucosal inflammatory cells and the remainder maintained until week +6. Serum levels of total, IgA and IgE antibodies against L3 antigen of each nematode were measured.
Scanning errors and lamb losses resulted in some ewes carrying and/or rearing only one lamb. Numbers of lambs reared was therefore introduced as a treatment effect. Vaccinating infection delayed the peri-parturient rise in faecal egg count (FEC) by an average of 2 weeks but its effect on FEC during the first 6 weeks of lactation was smaller and less persistent than that of dietary MP supply and single- v. twin-suckling.
Populations of both nematodes were lower in association with high MP supply, vaccination and single suckling. These changes were associated with increases in numbers of mucosal mast cells (MMC) as a result of both increased MP supply and vaccination. Evidence for a more rapid return of host ability to limit populations of the abdominal nematode T. circumcincta than of the intestinal nematode T. colubriformis was associated with fewer eosinophils and more globule leucocytes (GL) in abomasal than in intestinal tissue.
None of the serum antibody isotypes was affected by dietary protein supply. Total and IgA antibodies were maintained by a current larval (vaccinating) intake. IgA titres, however, increased progressively during pregnancy, especially in twin-bearing ewes. IgE titres appeared to be sensitive primarily to the reproductive cycle itself, peaking around parturition.
This work supports the conclusion that availability of MP supply influences the recruitment and activity of cells of the immune armoury of the gastro-intestinal tract to nematode parasites. The precise outcome may differ with site and/or nematode species.

Sixty twin- and 60 single-bearing ewes were used in a 2 ✕ 2 ✕ 2 factorial design incorporating nutritional and shearing-cold exposure treatment (no. = 15 per subgroup) to study the effects on periparturient immunity against nematode infection. From week –8 to week –4 relative to parturition, animals grazed ryegrass-white clover pastures at allowances designed to provide either 0·8 (low allowance) or 1·2 (high allowance) of estimated metabolizable energy requirement for a ewe carrying 1·5 lambs. During week –4, half the sheep from each reproductive effort and nutritional group were shorn and exposed to artificial wind and rain for 4 h on each of 4 days consecutively. During the same week, all animals were challenged twice with 1·5 ✕ 104 Teladorsagia circumcincta and 1·5 ✕ 104 Trichostrongylus colubriformis infective third stage larvae to supplement the natural infection from pasture. From week –3 to week + 5 relative to parturition the sheep were run together and offered pasture at rates estimated to enable them to meet their nutrient requirement.
Shearing and cold stress reduced ewe body weight (by up to 4·66 kg per sheep), and temporarily reduced the levels of IgA against T. circumcincta (by proportionately 0·24) and T. colubriformis (0·34), and raised faecal egg count (1·6 to 4·4 fold) but did not affect the parasite-specific total antibody levels in the serum. The low allowance during pregnancy was associated with a 6·09-kg decrease in ewe body weight, decrease in the levels of total antibody and of IgA against both T. circumcincta and T. colubriformis, and increased faecal egg count (by 1·5 to 10·6 fold) during pregnancy and lactation. Faecal egg count was consistently higher (up to 8·8 fold) in twin-bearing and rearing ewes than in single-bearing and rearing ewes except during the first 4 weeks of the experiment. A significant effect of litter size on antibody levels was relatively small when compared with short-term changes (reductions) in antibody levels immediately around parturition. There were significant negative correlations between faecal egg count during late pregnancy and ewe body weight in lactation and significant negative correlations between the levels of total antibody against T. colubriformis and faecal egg counts near the end of the experiment. We conclude that litter size is likely to have greater influence on the resistance of ewes to nematode infections in the periparturient period than either pasture allowance or cold stress within the range of parameters used in this work.

Superconducting thin films of YBa2Cu3O7 are prepared in-situ by on-axis, sputter deposition from a single, composite target. Our planar magnetron target composition of Y:Ba:Cu = 1.08:1.76:4.5 sputtered onto MgO at T~750°C in a 600mTorr Ar-O2 atmosphere yields reproducible superconducting films having Tc(R = 0)>80K and stoichiometry 1:2:3, that are shiny and of near epitaxial, crystalline quality. In order to ensure clean interfaces, YBa2Cu3O7/normal metal bilayers (to form SNS' Josephson junctions) and YBa2Cu3O7/normal metal/insulating barrier trilayers (to form SNIS' proximity tunnel junctions) are grown completely in-situ. (The S' = Pb counter electrode is evaporated ex-situ.) A supercurrent and Shapiro steps are observed in microwave irradiated SNS' (N = Ag) small area (5x10-5cm2) junctions. In SNIS' tunnel junctions, high-quality Pb tunneling is observed.

The climate of the Inner Hebrides is considered as a variant (a) of the climate of the British Isles, and (b) of the European Atlantic seaboard. Its chief characteristics are wetness, and mildness—expressed as minimal variation of temperature both diurnally and seasonally. Other features are the marked effect of topography, particularly on rainfall, cloudiness, and windiness. The ecological significance of these features is stressed.

The committee of the Carte du Ciel in 1910 adopted the following convention : That for Ao stars between magnitudes 5·5 and 6·5 the mean photographic magnitude should equal the mean Harvard visual magnitude. As a corollary, the colour index of Ao stars would then be zero.
The zero point of the photographic magnitudes of the International Polar Sequence was fixed as nearly as possible in accordance with this definition; but it was by no means certain that the magnitudes thus adopted for the few stars of the Sequence represented the zero point defined by all the Ao stars specified.

The following summarizes the activities of various members of the Commission in matters pertaining to stellar photometry during the interval 1932-35:
La partie photométrique des trois derniers volumes du Catalogue Astrographique (zone de Catane entre +46° et +55°) est soigneusement dressée sur le système de Miss Leavitt (Harv. Annals, 81). L’erreur moyenne des grandeurs, d’après la réduction de 100 plaques (zones +51° à + 54°, entre 6h et I2h), n’est que de ± om.o8. Nos réductions photométriques ont été effectuées par la formule
