In the course of an artificially triggered avalanche, a particle tracking procedure is combined with supplementary measurements, including Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) positioning, terrestrial laser scanning and Doppler radar measurements. Specifically, an intertial measurement unit is mounted inside a rigid sphere, which is placed in the avalanche track. The sphere is entrained by the moving snow, recording translational accelerations, angular velocities and the flux density of Earth's magnetic field. Based on the recorded data, we present a threefold analysis: (i) a qualitative data interpretation, identifying different particle motion phases which are associated with corresponding flow regimes, (ii) a quantitative time integration algorithm, determining the corresponding particle trajectory and associated velocities on the basis of standard sensor calibration, and (iii) an improved quantitative evaluation relying on a novel in situ sensor calibration technique, which is motivated by the limitations of the given dataset. The final results, i.e. the evolution of the angular orientation of the sensor unit, translational and rotational velocities and estimates of the sensor trajectory, are assessed with respect to their reliability and relevance for avalanche dynamics as well as for future design of experiments.

Background
Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) is a fast-acting intervention for major depressive disorder. Previous studies indicated neurotrophic effects following ECT that might contribute to changes in white matter brain structure. We investigated the influence of ECT in a non-randomized prospective study focusing on white matter changes over time.
MethodsTwenty-nine severely depressed patients receiving ECT in addition to inpatient treatment, 69 severely depressed patients with inpatient treatment (NON-ECT) and 52 healthy controls (HC) took part in a non-randomized prospective study. Participants were scanned twice, approximately 6 weeks apart, using diffusion tensor imaging, applying tract-based spatial statistics. Additional correlational analyses were conducted in the ECT subsample to investigate the effects of seizure duration and therapeutic response.
ResultsMean diffusivity (MD) increased after ECT in the right hemisphere, which was an ECT-group-specific effect. Seizure duration was associated with decreased fractional anisotropy (FA) following ECT. Longitudinal changes in ECT were not associated with therapy response. However, within the ECT group only, baseline FA was positively and MD negatively associated with post-ECT symptomatology.
ConclusionOur data suggest that ECT changes white matter integrity, possibly reflecting increased permeability of the blood–brain barrier, resulting in disturbed communication of fibers. Further, baseline diffusion metrics were associated with therapy response. Coherent fiber structure could be a prerequisite for a generalized seizure and inhibitory brain signaling necessary to successfully inhibit increased seizure activity.

Results of acoustic emission tests on cylindrical specimens under compression are reported. Deformation-rate-controlled tests with strain rates ranging from 1.1 × 10-6 s-1 to 2.6 × 10-3 s-1 at temperatures between T = -11.2°Cand T = -1.7°C were performed. The investigated snow was fine-grained, with a density varying between 220 and 380 kgm-3. The acoustic emission was measured with two distinct piezoelectric sensors: a wide-band sensor (frequency 100–1000 kHz) and a resonant sensor (frequency 35–100 kHz). The relationship between the applied strain rate and the measured maximum acoustic-emission rate as a function of temperature and density was found to obey a power law, which is valid for the ductile behaviour range. The quantitative and qualitative effects produced on the acoustic emissions during the transition from ductile to brittle behaviour, occurring at strain rates of approximately 1 × 10-3 s-1, are reported. Finally, the influence of the load history on the acoustic emissions of snow is discussed on the basis of a cyclic test, including deformation-controlled loading steps and relaxation steps, performed at different strain rates and different relaxation times.

The date of the Late Bronze Age Minoan eruption of the Thera volcano has provoked much debate among archaeologists, not least in a recent issue of Antiquity (‘Bronze Age catastrophe and modern controversy: dating the Santorini eruption’, March 2014). Here, the authors respond to those recent contributions, citing evidence that closes the gap between the conclusions offered by previous typological, stratigraphic and radiometric dating techniques. They reject the need to choose between alternative approaches to the problem and make a case for the synchronisation of eastern Mediterranean and Egyptian chronologies with agreement on a ‘high’ date in the late seventeenth century BC for the Thera eruption.

Cross-sectional echocardiography was performed on 108 healthy children (7 days – 17 years old) and 55 children (6 months - 16.5 years old) with interatrial communication. Right ventricular end-diastolic volume, end-systolic volume, stroke volume, ejection fraction, muscle volume, and the ratio of muscle to cavity were calculated on the basis of outlined cavity and myocardium of an apical fourchamber view.
In the normal subjects right ventricular end-diastolic volume, end-systolic volume, stroke volume and muscle volume correlated with body surface area (end-diastolic volume: y=12.5x+7.8x2, r=0.99; end-systolic volume: y=4.8x+3.6x2, r=0.98; stroke volume: y=7.7x+4.2x2, r=0.98; muscle volume: y=14.1x+2.9x2, r=0.97), muscle/cavity ratio (0.85±0.17) and ejection fraction (58.9 ± 6.2%) were unrelated to body surface area. In the subjects with interatrial communication, the right ventricular volumes were significantly larger (p<0.001) than the normal values with a linear relationship to the ratio of pulmonary to systemic flows.
Right ventricular volumes can be determined in normal children with acceptable repeatability using a standard apical four-chamber view. The growth related normal values provide a basis for future quantitative studies.

The present article is in part a corollary to an earlier one on Populism and a further chapter in an exploration into that complex movement in the contemporary French novel which is in revolt against nineteenth-century individualism and all the involved subjectivisms, the affected preciosity and even the dishevelled formlessness of the “littérature snob.” The branch of the movement I propose to discuss is sometimes referred to by critics as a new classicism, and though the term is misleading it can stand. Jules Romains himself expresses the sense of cleavage between two literatures when he says: Je crois … qu'un peu partout une certaine période de littérature coupée du réel, tournée avec trop de complaisance vers l‘étude d‘états dâmes fragiles, infiniment particuliers et périssables est en train de se clore.

Needless to say, it is not with an American agrarian revolt of the end of last century, nor with the fortunes of a German political party that this paper is concerned, but rather with that fruitful and significant grouping of a score or more of contemporary French novelists under the banner of a common conception of the novel, its aims and appropriate media. If the name “Populism” is misleading because of certain political implications, one can at least be thankful that André Thérive and Léon Lemonnier in the consultations that preceded the launching of the new school a little over three years ago rejected labels such as “humilism” and “demotism” which might have proved even more puzzling.
