A site for deep ice coring at West Hercules Dome: results from ground-based geophysics and modeling

Hercules Dome, Antarctica, has long been identified as a prospective deep ice core site due to the undisturbed internal layering, climatic setting and potential to obtain proxy records from the Last Interglacial (LIG) period when the West Antarctic ice sheet may have collapsed. We performed a geophysical survey using multiple ice-penetrating radar systems to identify potential locations for a deep ice core at Hercules Dome. The surface topography, as revealed with recent satellite observations, is more complex than previously recognized. The most prominent dome, which we term ‘West Dome’, is the most promising region for a deep ice core for the following reasons: (1) bed-conformal radar reflections indicate minimal layer disturbance and extend to within tens of meters of the ice bottom; (2) the bed is likely frozen, as evidenced by both the shape of the measured vertical ice velocity profiles beneath the divide and modeled ice temperature using three remotely sensed estimates of geothermal flux and (3) models of layer thinning have 132 ka old ice at 45–90 m above the bed with an annual layer thickness of ~1 mm, satisfying the resolution and preservation needed for detailed analysis of the LIG period.

Introduction
Body dysmorphic disorder (BDD) is characterized by a preoccupation with misperceived defects in appearance. Neuropsychological studies and neuroimaging studies of face perception suggests visual processing abnormalities in individuals with BDD, which may involve focus on details at the expense of configural elements.
ObjectiveThe objective of the current functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) study was to determine whether individuals with BDD have abnormal patterns of brain activation when visually processing non-face objects (houses).
MethodsFourteen medication-free subjects with BDD and fourteen matched healthy controls engaged in a matching task of photographs of houses that were
a) unaltered,
b) high spatial frequency (high detail elements only), or
c) low spatial frequency (low detail elements only).
The main outcome measure was group differences in blood oxygen level-dependent fMRI signal changes.
ResultsBDD subjects demonstrated lesser activity relative to controls in left parahippocampal gyrus, left lingual gyrus, and bilateral precuneus for low spatial frequency images and relatively greater activity in the frontal pole, left superior frontal gyrus, bilateral anterior cingulate gyrus, and bilateral paracingulate gyrus for high spatial frequency images (Figure 1).
ConclusionsIndividuals with BDD have abnormal brain activation patterns when viewing houses for both detailed and configural/holistic visual elements. These results suggest general abnormalities in higher- and lower-order visual processing in individuals with BDD, beyond that for appearance-related stimuli.
Extending the interval between second vaccination and slaughter: I. Effects on growth, scrotal size and stress responses of immunocastrated ram lambs

Immunocastration provides a less invasive means of castrating lambs. Considering increasing consumer awareness, the efficacy of this technique on commercial slaughter lambs needs to be further investigated and its effects on growth and stress responses need to be established. This study compared the growth rate, testes size and stress responses of immunocastrated lambs with that of lambs physically castrated with a Burdizzo clamp, as well as intact rams. A total of 40 Dohne Merino ram lambs (average live weight = 45.4±3.68 kg) were randomly allocated to the following four treatment groups: control (intact; R), Burdizzo-castrated (on day 2; B), immunocastrated with a 4-week (ICS4), or a 6-week (ICS6) interval between the second immunocastration vaccination and slaughter. Within the immunocastration treatments, the reaction to vaccination was assessed through injection site scoring, recording the local injection site surface temperature and assigning a walking score. The response to Burdizzo castration was assessed by scoring the reaction during the procedure, testes palpation reaction, walking gait and measuring testis temperature. Additional parameters recorded included BW, serum cortisol concentration, scrotal circumference and rectal temperature. Pain behaviours were described for the short-, medium- and long-term effects after the two methods of castration. Predominantly, tissue-hardening and bruising occurred at the injection sites of immunocastrates, but little effect was observed on walking comfort and no effect on injection site temperature or rectal temperatures. After Burdizzo castration, lambs spent more time in abnormal postures, and from day 3 (D3) to D8 of the trial, discomfort was observed during testes palpation and walking in B lambs. Serum cortisol concentrations were elevated in B lambs on D3 and D15, indicating physiological stress. Thus, immunocastration improved the welfare of castrated lambs as assessed by cortisol secretion, scrotal swelling and pain behaviours, without influencing growth rate.

Immunocastration improves the welfare of castrated commercial slaughter lambs; however, the time-point at which this technique influences semen quality and sperm production has not yet been established for various vaccination schedules. Furthermore, the effect of extended intervals between second vaccination and slaughter needs to be investigated regarding continued testosterone suppression in immunocastrated lambs. The effect of extending the interval between second immunocastration vaccination and slaughter from four to six weeks on the reproductive capacity of Dohne Merino lambs was examined. A total of 40 Dohne Merino lambs were stratified according to initial weight (45.4±3.68 kg) and randomly assigned to four treatments that included intact control rams (R), Burdizzo-castrated lambs (B) and lambs immunocastrated with either four (ICS4) or six (ICS6) weeks between second vaccination and slaughter. Blood and semen samples were collected throughout the study period to determine serum testosterone concentrations, evaluate semen quality and assess sperm viability. Semen samples from R showed improvement over the trial. Throughout the collection period, B lambs had low serum testosterone concentrations, poor sperm motility and sperm viability, as expected. However, a slight increase in the percentage of live sperm in semen samples from B lambs towards the end of the collection period indicated poor success rates of the technique in some lambs. Burdizzo-castration also caused testes tissue necrosis and abscessing, indicating physiological stress. Semen appearance scores varied for both immunocastrated treatments, but the mass motility scores decreased over time. The ICS6 lambs showed a consistent and continuous decline in serum testosterone concentrations and sperm viability, with an increased percentage of dead abnormal sperm in the semen samples at the end of the study. The ICS4 treatment was successful in interrupting serum testosterone production and reducing semen quality; however, not as consistently as the ICS6 treatment. Primary immunocastration vaccination influenced serum testosterone concentrations but consistently low levels were only realised for both treatments after secondary vaccination. Although all castration treatments influenced testes size and colour, the six-week vaccination-to-slaughter interval caused a greater decrease in testes cut surface L* (lightness) colour values and in seminiferous tubule circumference. Extending the interval between second immunocastration vaccination and slaughter resulted in a more consistent and reliable influence on reproductive capacity of immunocastrated lambs. Thus, immunocastration is a suitable alternative to Burdizzo-castration regarding the interruption of testosterone production and testis functioning.
HIV and viral hepatitis coinfection analysis using surveillance data from 15 US states and two cities

Coinfection with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and viral hepatitis is associated with high morbidity and mortality in the absence of clinical management, making identification of these cases crucial. We examined characteristics of HIV and viral hepatitis coinfections by using surveillance data from 15 US states and two cities. Each jurisdiction used an automated deterministic matching method to link surveillance data for persons with reported acute and chronic hepatitis B virus (HBV) or hepatitis C virus (HCV) infections, to persons reported with HIV infection. Of the 504 398 persons living with diagnosed HIV infection at the end of 2014, 2.0% were coinfected with HBV and 6.7% were coinfected with HCV. Of the 269 884 persons ever reported with HBV, 5.2% were reported with HIV. Of the 1 093 050 persons ever reported with HCV, 4.3% were reported with HIV. A greater proportion of persons coinfected with HIV and HBV were males and blacks/African Americans, compared with those with HIV monoinfection. Persons who inject drugs represented a greater proportion of those coinfected with HIV and HCV, compared with those with HIV monoinfection. Matching HIV and viral hepatitis surveillance data highlights epidemiological characteristics of persons coinfected and can be used to routinely monitor health status and guide state and national public health interventions.
Volume and velocity changes at Mittivakkat Gletscher, southeast Greenland

We document changes for Mittivakkat Gletscher, the peripheral glacier in Greenland with the longest field-based observed mass-balance and surface velocity time series. Between 1986 and 2011, this glacier changed by −15% in mean ice thickness and −30% in volume. We attribute these changes to summer warming and lower winter snow accumulation. Vertical strain compensated for ∼60% of the elevation change due to surface mass balance (SMB) in the lower part, and ∼25% in the upper part. The annual mean ice surface velocity changed by −30%, which can be fully explained by the dynamic effect of ice thinning, within uncertainty. Mittivakkat Gletscher summer surface velocities were on average 50–60% above winter background values, and up to 160% higher during peak velocity events. Peak velocity events were accompanied by uplift of a few centimeters.

Role of radiotherapy in adenoid cystic carcinoma of the head and neck

This study retrospectively reviewed 183 cases of adenoid cystic carcinoma treated over 40 years. The local recurrence free survival rate was 68.2 per cent at five years and 40.8 per cent at 10 years. At 10 years, local recurrence free survival was significantly worse following radiotherapy alone (0 per cent), compared with surgery alone (41.8 per cent, p = 0.004) or combined with post-operative radiotherapy (43.5 per cent, p = 0.001). Neither tumour stage three or four, perineural invasion, solid subtype nor involved margins predicted local recurrence. Treatment with radiotherapy alone resulted in worse survival than surgery alone (p = 0.002) or combined with post-operative radiotherapy (p = 0.001). Survival rates following local recurrence (n = 34) were higher following surgery (p = 0.006) but not significantly improved following radiotherapy (p = 0.139). Chemotherapy for distant metastases did not prolong survival (p = 0.747) but did result in improved eating and aesthetics scores, while decreasing overall physical health. These results indicate that surgery is preferable for primary and recurrent adenoid cystic carcinoma of the head and neck. The incidence of local recurrence following surgery and postoperative radiotherapy was similar to surgery alone cases although the latter had less adverse prognostic features. Contemporary chemotherapy may benefit quality of life but not survival in patients with distant metastases due to adenoid cystic carcinoma of the head and neck.

Introducing a concept of real, as opposed to nominal, inequality of income or wealth suggests some historical reinterpretations, buttressed by a closer look at consumption by the rich. The purchasing powers of different income classes depend on how relative prices move. Relative prices affected real inequality more strongly in earlier centuries than in the twentieth. Between 1500 and about 1800, staple food and fuels became dearer, while luxury goods, especially servants, became cheaper, greatly widening the inequality of lifestyles. Peace, industrialization, and globalization reversed this inegalitarian price effect in the nineteenth century, at least for England.

We used high-pressure grown GaN single crystal substrates to fabricate dislocation free optoelectronic devices like light emitting diodes and laser diodes structures. The latter ones demonstrated laser action under optical pumping condition with the threshold of about 200 kW/cm2 at room temperature. In the present paper we would focus on the specific aspects of the homoepitaxial growth by MOVPE method including epi-ready substrate preparation and surface polarity choice. We believe that our results demonstrate clearly the feasibility of device fabrication based on high-pressure grown GaN bulk crystals.

Sub-0.2 nm probes can now be readily obtained on Schottky field-emission microscopes[1]. However environmental instabilities are proving to be the limiting factors for atomic resolution spectroscopy and distortion-free annular-dark field imaging, as a result of the long acquisition times (comparable to those required for inline holography[2]), and from the serial nature of the scanning system where instabilities result in image distortions rather than reductions in contrast. Troubleshooting the two most common environmental problems are discussed here.
Electromagnetic interference can cause beam deflections in both the scanning system and the spectrometer [3](< 0.3 mG r.ms for 0.3nm, < 0.2 mG for 0.2 nm). These are most easily dealt with before the machine is installed, as substantial rewiring may be necessary. There is little that can be done about quasi-DC fields, such as from elevators and nearby trains and buses. Major sources of AC electromagnetic interference are unbalanced electrical loads.

Summary
Introduction
During the last 100 years, concerns over the degradation of the karoo have had a major impact on the development of agricultural policy for South Africa. Government commissions of inquiry into stock disease (Anon, 1877), drought (Anon, 1923) and desert encroachment (Anon, 1951) and other state agricultural initiatives such as the 1960s Stock Reduction Scheme (Pringle et al., 1982), the privatization of karoo communal lands (Boonzaier et al., 1990) and the National Grazing Strategy (Du Toit et al., 1991) have all either highlighted the desertification issue or have sought to limit the rate and extent of karoo degradation. Unlike the Sahel, for example, where there has been a significant decrease in annual rainfall since 1966 (UNEP, 1992), the perceived negative changes in the karoo landscape and declining agricultural productivity have been attributed directly to agricultural impacts, and in particular to overgrazing (Acocks, 1953; Dean and Macdonald, 1994). It is generally believed that it has been the mismatch of agricultural land use practices with the production potential of the land which has led to widespread desertification in arid and semi-arid South Africa (Milton et al., 1994b; Badenhorst, 1995). Although this is a powerful indictment against the stewardship of the many generations of South Africans who have lived off the karoo, it is important to assess its veracity. To do this we need to understand how karoo landscapes have been utilized in the past and to assess the ecological impact of contemporary agricultural practices on the region.
There are two main agricultural production systems in the karoo with widely differing histories, forms of land tenure, institutional arrangements, land use practices and production objectives.

The key requirements for photovoltaic modules to be accepted for large-scale terrestrial applications are (i) low material cost, (ii) high efficiency with good stability, (iii) low manufacturing cost with good yield and (iv) environmental safety. Thin films of amorphous silicon alloy are inexpensive; the products are also environmentally benign. The challenge has been to improve the stable efficiency of these modules and transfer the R&D results into production. Using a multijunction, multi-bandgap approach to capture the solar spectrum more efficiently, we have developed one-square-foot modules with initial efficiency of 11.8% After 1000 h of one-sun light soaking, a stable efficiency of 10.2% was obtained. Both the efficiency values were confirmed by National Renewable Energy Laboratory. The technology has been transferred to production using an automated roll-to-roll process in which different layers of the cell structure are deposited in a continuous manner onto stainless steel rolls, 14′ wide and half a mile long. The rolls are next processed into modules of different sizes. This inexpensive manufacturing process produces high efficiency modules with subcell yields greater than 99% The key features of the technology transfer and future scope for improvement are discussed.

This paper reports upon a new technique for the formation of epitaxial Pd2Si on (100) silicon using thin predeposited titanium layers. Improvements in the quality of epitaxy in Pd2Si on {111} silicon by this technique will also be shown. A preliminary model for the formation of epitaxy will be given. Discrepancies between this model and results in the literature will be discussed and experiments suggested to resolve the uncertainties.
