Pliocene–Pleistocene sedimentary development of the syntectonic Polis graben, NW Cyprus: evidence from facies analysis, nannofossil biochronology and strontium isotope dating

The recently uplifted and exposed Pliocene and Pleistocene sedimentary infill of the neotectonic Polis graben provides an excellent opportunity to understand extensional basin development in a marine setting. Fieldwork, facies analysis and dating using nannofossils and strontium isotopes reveal how the sedimentary conditions evolved during infill of the Polis graben during Pliocene and Pleistocene time, and allow a composite succession for the depocentre to be determined for the first time. Six lithofacies are recognized in the northern Polis graben, allowing evolving palaeoenvironments to be inferred. By the end of Miocene time (Messinian) a major c. N–S-trending graben was established; extensional faulting continued during the Pliocene–Pleistocene until recent time. Post-Messinian salinity crisis deposition began with deposition of hemipelagic muds (c. 5.08–2.76 Ma), equivalent to the Nicosia Formation. This was followed by upwards incoming of repeated normal-graded bioclastic carbonates (couplets) (c. 2.76–1.6 Ma), which are interpreted as age-equivalents of the Athalassa Formation elsewhere in Cyprus. The upwards sudden facies change is explained by tectonically controlled shallowing which enabled neritic carbonate production on the basin margins. The appearance of basement-derived material (e.g. ophiolitic extrusive detritus) in the highest stratigraphic levels of the basin fill in the north (c. 1.7–1.6 Ma) reflects onset of rapid surface uplift focused on the Troodos ophiolitic massif. Overall, the syntectonic basin infill appears to document a two-stage, pulsed uplift related to early-stage collision of the African and Eurasian plates in the easternmost Mediterranean region.

Introduction: Decreasing readmission rates and return emergency department (ED) visits represent a major challenge for health organizations. Seniors are especially vulnerable to discharge adverse events which can result in unplanned readmissions and loss of physical, functional and/or cognitive capacity. The ACE Collaborative is a national quality improvement initiative that aims to improve care of elderly patients. We aimed to adapt Mount Sinai’s Care Transitions program to our local context in order to decrease avoidable readmissions and ED visits among seniors. Methods: We performed a prospective pre/post implementation cohort study. We recruited frail elderly hospitalized patients (≥50 years old) discharged to home and at risk of readmission (modified LACE index score≥7/12). We excluded patients being discharged to long-term nursing homes or institutions. Our intervention is based on selected strategic ACE Care Transitions best practices: transition coach, telehealth personal response services and a structured discharge checklist. The intervention is offered to selected patients before hospital discharge. Our primary outcome is a 30-day post-discharge composite of hospital readmission and return ED visit rate. Our secondary outcomes are functional autonomy, satisfaction with care transition, quality of life, caregiver strain and healthcare resource use at recruitment and at 30-days follow-up. Hospital-level administrative data is also collected to measure global effect of practice changes. Results: The project is currently ongoing and preliminary results are available for the pre-implementation cohort only. Patients in this cohort (n=33) were mainly men (61%), aged 75±10 years and presented an OARS score (Activities of Daily Living instrument that ranges from 0-28) of 5.6±4.9. At 30 days post-discharge, the patients in our cohort had a 42.4% readmission rate (14 hospitalisations) and a 54.5% return ED visit rate (18 visits). For the same time period, readmission and return ED rates for all patients in the same corresponding age-group at the hospital level were 14.4% and 21.9%, respectively. Further results for our post-intervention cohort will be presented at CAEP 2017. Conclusion: Our cohort of elderly patients have high readmission and return ED visit rates. Our ongoing quality improvement project aims to decrease these readmissions and ED visits.

New age data from Sr isotope analysis and both planktonic foraminifera and nannofossils are presented and discussed here for the Upper Eocene–Upper Miocene sedimentary rocks of the Değirmenlik (Kythrea) Group. New dating is also given of some Cretaceous and Pliocene sediments. In a revised stratigraphy the Değirmenlik (Kythrea) Group is divided into ten formations. Different Upper Miocene formations are developed to the north and south of a regionally important, E–W-trending syn-sedimentary fault. The samples were dated wherever possible by three independent methods, namely utilizing Sr isotopes, calcareous nannofossils and planktonic foraminifera. Some of the Sr isotopic dates are incompatible with the nannofossil and/or the planktonic foraminiferal dates. This is mainly due to reworking within gravity-deposited or current-affected sediments. When combined, the reliable age data allow an overall biostratigraphy and chronology to be erected. Several of the boundaries of previously defined formations are revised. Sr data that are incompatible with well-constrained biostratigraphical ages are commonly of Early Miocene age. This is attributed to a regional uplift event located to the east of Cyprus, specifically the collision of the Anatolian (Eurasian) and Arabian (African) plates during Early Miocene time. This study, therefore, demonstrates that analytically sound Sr isotopic ages can yield geologically misleading ages, particularly where extensive sediment reworking has occurred. Convincing ages are obtained when isotopic dating is combined with as many forms of biostratigraphical dating as possible, and this may also reveal previously unsuspected geological events (e.g. tectonic uplift or current activity).

Summary
ABSTRACT
Annual precipitation on the Caribbean island of Puerto Rico has decreased steadily during the twentieth century, on average by 16%. The reduced rainfall manifested itself in the form of regular water rationings for millions of inhabitants during the 1990s. This chapter examines the link between the reduction in precipitation and the land-cover change using a combination of energy balance measurements and meso-scale atmospheric modeling. The explanation of the reduction in precipitation proved to be different than expected. Based on measurements made earlier over rain forest and pasture in Amazonia, a forest-covered island was expected to be cooler because of the higher transpiration of forest compared to grassland. The opposite proved to be the case: transpiration by a coastal wetland forest was less than that of an adjacent, well-watered grassland. In addition, the forest's albedo was 8% lower than that for the grassland. Together, these two factors caused the sensible heat flux over the forest to be twice that over the grassland. The surface energy balance observations over forest and grassland were used in a meso-scale atmospheric circulation model (RAMS) to simulate the meteorological effects of island-wide deforestation. The simulations indicated that the development of a sea breeze during the day dominates the climate on the island. In model runs in which the island was assumed to be completely covered with forest, the sea breeze was considerably stronger than when the vegetation had been transformed to grassland. A new neurological mouse mutant, Nijmegen waltzer (symbol nv), that causes circling and head-shaking without deafness, a marked tendency for aggressiveness, and reduced weight, is described. It is a single autosomal recessive, with complete penetrance and variable expression, and is probably located in linkage group I.

Background
Both mental disorders and personality characteristics are associated with impaired work functioning, but these determinants have not yet been studied together. The aim of this paper is to examine the impairing effects that mental disorders and personality characteristics (i.e. neuroticism, locus of control and self-esteem) have on work functioning.
MethodData for a representative sample of 3570 working people were derived from the first two waves of the Netherlands Mental Health Survey and Incidence Study (NEMESIS), a prospective cohort study in the Dutch adult population.
ResultsHigher neuroticism, more external locus of control and lower self-esteem were each significantly associated with subsequent impairment in work functioning, independently of any effects from mental disorders. Associations between mental disorders and subsequent work impairment disappeared once personality traits were taken into account. Personality traits did not moderate the relationships between mental disorders and work functioning.
ConclusionsWorking people with vulnerable personalities have a greater risk of impaired work functioning, independent of the risk from any mental disorder they may have.

This paper discusses the characterization and optimization of organic solar cells based on a bulk heterojunction consisting of an alternating copolymer, containing a fluorene and a benzathiadiazole unit with two neighboring thiophene rings, and a fullerene derivative (PCBM). The resulting power conversion efficiency amounts 3.9±0.2 % (AM1.5, 100 mW/cm2) and these polymer solar cells are therefore considered auspicious for further research.
