In 2018, the Alliance for Open Media (AOMedia) finalized its first video compression format AV1, which is jointly developed by the industry consortium of leading video technology companies. The main goal of AV1 is to provide an open source and royalty-free video coding format that substantially outperforms state-of-the-art codecs available on the market in compression efficiency while remaining practical decoding complexity as well as being optimized for hardware feasibility and scalability on modern devices. To give detailed insights into how the targeted performance and feasibility is realized, this paper provides a technical overview of key coding techniques in AV1. Besides, the coding performance gains are validated by video compression tests performed with the libaom AV1 encoder against the libvpx VP9 encoder. Preliminary comparison with two leading HEVC encoders, x265 and HM, and the reference software of VVC is also conducted on AOM's common test set and an open 4k set.

Objectives
Population-based colorectal cancer (CRC) screening programs that use a fecal immunochemical test (FIT) are often faced with a noncompliance issue and its subsequent waiting time (WT) for those FIT positives complying with confirmatory diagnosis. We aimed to identify factors associated with both of the correlated problems in the same model.
MethodsA total of 294,469 subjects, either with positive FIT test results or having a family history, collected from 2004 to 2013 were enrolled for analysis. We applied a hurdle Poisson regression model to accommodate the hurdle of compliance and also its related WT for undergoing colonoscopy while assessing factors responsible for the mixture of the two outcomes.
ResultsThe effect on compliance and WT varied with contextual factors, such as geographic areas, type of screening units, and level of urbanization. The hurdle score, representing the risk score in association with noncompliance, and the WT score, reflecting the rate of taking colonoscopy, were used to classify subjects into each of three groups representing the degree of compliance and the level of health awareness.
ConclusionOur model was not only successfully applied to evaluating factors associated with the compliance and the WT distribution, but also developed into a useful assessment model for stratifying the risk and predicting whether and when screenees comply with the procedure of receiving confirmatory diagnosis given contextual factors and individual characteristics.

Objective
To investigate the reciprocal relationship between unhealthy eating behaviours and depressive symptoms from childhood to adolescence.
DesignUnhealthy eating behaviours were measured by the frequencies of eating foods with excess salt, sugar or fat in the past week. Depressive symptoms in the past two weeks were measured using a seven-item scale. Hierarchical linear growth models were used to analyse longitudinal associations between unhealthy eating behaviours and depressive symptoms. Time-fixed variables (sex, parents’ education level and household monthly income) and time-varying variables (parents’ marital status, family activities, body weight, vegetable or fruit consumption, exercising and smoking) were controlled for.
SettingThe Child and Adolescent Behaviors in Long-Term Evolution study, which commenced in 2001 and has annual follow-up.
SubjectsStudents (n 2630) followed from 2nd grade (8 years old in 2002) to 11th grade.
ResultsThe frequency of unhealthy eating behaviours in the previous year and the difference between the frequency in the previous and successive year were positively associated with the initiation and growth rate of depressive symptoms. Depressive symptoms in the previous year and the difference in depressive symptoms between the previous and successive year were positively associated with the initial state and growth rate of unhealthy eating behaviours.
ConclusionsOur results suggest a reciprocal relationship between depressive symptoms and unhealthy eating behaviours. This relationship should be considered when developing programmes targeting depressive symptoms and unhealthy diet in children and adolescents.

This paper reports a visual tracking system that can track moving objects in real-time with a modest workstation equipped with a pan-tilt device. The algorithm essentially has three parts: (1) feature detection, (2) tracking and (3) control of the robot head. Corners are viewpoint invariant, hence being utilised as the beacon for tracking. Tracking is performed in two stages of Kalman filtering and affine transformation. A technique of reducing greatly the computational time for the correlaton is also described. The Kalman filter predicts intelligently the fovea window and reduced computation dramatically. The affine transformation deals with the unexpected events when there is partial occlusion.

The electrical characteristics of thin gate dielectrics prepared by low temperature (850 °C) two-step N20 nitridation (LTN) process are presented. The gate oxides were grown by wet oxidation at 800 °C and then annealed in N2O at 850 °C. The oxide with N2O anneal, even for low temperature (850 °C), had nitrogen incorporation at oxide/silicon interface. The charge trapping phenomena and interface-state generation (ΔDitm) induced by constant current stressing were reduced and charge-to-breakdown (Qbd) under constant current stressing was increased. This LTN oxynitride was used as gate dielectric for N-channel MOSFET, whose hot-canrier immunity was shown improved and reverse short channel effect (RSCE) was suppressed.
