Mesoporous silica is of current interest for therapeutic applications, such as drug delivery, because of its small size and internal pore structure into which small molecules can be adsorbed. However, while the toxicity literature is extensive for micron-sized crystalline silica due to occupational health concerns, there is relatively little information available for mesoporous silica. Here, solid silica and mesoporous silica particles are characterized using SEM, DLS, XRD, and BET analysis; and their toxicities assessed using a modified MTT assay for cell viability and DPPP assay for lipid peroxidation. On a mass basis, mesoporous silica reduces cell viability from 82 ± 8% to 73 ± 16% compared to solid silica, likely due to the decreased density and therefore increased number of particles and particle surface area. This modest increase in toxicity, compared to the dramatic 600X increase in total surface area for mesoporous silica, from both pore and particle surfaces, suggests that the toxicity mechanism depends on the surface area available to the cell and not the total surface area. DPPP results support this conclusion and indicate that membrane lipid peroxidation is involved.

The factors potentially leading to the development of periodic hypoxia were investigated based on field studies performed over a series of two years between November, 1997 and November, 1999. This was attempted by investigating both hard and soft seafloor. Descriptive and predictive models were developed that incorporated physical, chemical and biological data derived from the present study and previous work and were used to anticipate future possible crashes of the faunal communities due to hypoxia/anoxia. It was concluded that periodic hypoxia at Ardbear is a natural event caused by several factors to varying degrees. The results of the present study indicate that the major controlling factors for oxygen depletion are the shallow depth of the system, coupled with the development of thermal stratification during periods of calm ambient meteorological conditions of the warmer summer months. In addition, a soft, muddy bottom and highly productive plankton blooms exacerbate conditions in a system already predisposed to hypoxia.

A credible account of the neurobiology underlying cognitive development cannot afford to ignore the recently demonstrated innate regionalisation of the neocortex as well as the ontogeny of corticocortical phenomena, only for the latter does the timing of development permit control by external events and this is most likely to occur at later stages in the fine tuning of cortical microcircuitry.
