Associations between maternal folate status and choline intake during pregnancy and neurodevelopment at 3–4 years of age in the Alberta Pregnancy Outcomes and Nutrition (APrON) study

Folate and choline are methyl donor nutrients that may play a role in fetal brain development. Animal studies have reported that prenatal folate and choline supplementation are associated with better cognitive outcomes in offspring and that these nutrients may interact and affect brain development. Human studies that have investigated associations between maternal prenatal folate or choline levels and neurodevelopmental outcomes have reported contradictory findings and no human studies have examined the potential interactive effect of folate and choline on children’s neurodevelopment. During the second trimester of pregnancy, maternal red blood cell folate was measured from blood samples and choline intake was estimated using a 24-h dietary recall in 309 women in the APrON cohort. At 3–5 years of age, their children’s neurodevelopment was assessed using the Wechsler Preschool and Primary Scales of Intelligence – Fourth EditionCND, NEPSY-II language and memory subtests, four behavioral executive function tasks, and the Movement Assessment Battery for Children – Second Edition. Adjusted regressions revealed no associations between maternal folate and choline levels during pregnancy and most of the child outcomes. On the Dimensional Change Card Sort, an executive function task, there was an interaction effect; at high levels of choline intake (i.e., 1 SD above the mean; 223.03 mg/day), higher maternal folate status was associated with decreased odds of receiving a passing score (β = −0.44; 95%CI −0.81, −0.06). In conclusion, maternal folate status and choline intake during the second trimester of pregnancy were not associated with children’s intelligence, language, memory, or motor outcomes at 3–4 years of age; however, their interaction may have an influence children’s executive functions.
Food recalls associated with foodborne disease outbreaks, United States, 2006–2016

About 800 foodborne disease outbreaks are reported in the United States annually. Few are associated with food recalls. We compared 226 outbreaks associated with food recalls with those not associated with recalls during 2006–2016. Recall-associated outbreaks had, on average, more illnesses per outbreak and higher proportions of hospitalisations and deaths than non-recall-associated outbreaks. The top confirmed aetiology for recall-associated outbreaks was Salmonella. Pasteurised and unpasteurised dairy products, beef and molluscs were the most frequently implicated foods. The most common pathogen−food pairs for outbreaks with recalls were Escherichia coli-beef and norovirus-molluscs; the top pairs for non-recall-associated outbreaks were scombrotoxin-fish and ciguatoxin-fish. For outbreaks with recalls, 48% of the recalls occurred after the outbreak, 27% during the outbreak, 3% before the outbreak, and 22% were inconclusive or had unknown recall timing. Fifty per cent of recall-associated outbreaks were multistate, compared with 2% of non-recall-associated outbreaks. The differences between recall-associated outbreaks and non-recall-associated outbreaks help define the types of outbreaks and food vehicles that are likely to have a recall. Improved outbreak vehicle identification and traceability of rarely recalled foods could lead to more recalls of these products, resulting in fewer illnesses and deaths.

Objective:
We aimed to identify factors (child diet, physical activity; maternal BMI) associated with body composition of Ghanaian pre-school children.
Design:Longitudinal analysis of the International Lipid-Based Nutrient Supplements (iLiNS)-DYAD-Ghana randomized trial, which enrolled 1320 pregnant women at ≤20 weeks’ gestation and followed them and their infants until 6 and 18 months postpartum, respectively. At follow-up, child age 4–6 years, we collected data on body composition (by 2H dilution), physical activity and diet, extracted dietary patterns using factor analysis, and examined the association of children’s percentage body fat with maternal and child factors by regression analysis.
Setting:Eastern Region, Ghana.
Participants:Children 4–6 years of age.
Results:The analysis included 889 children with percentage body fat and dietary data at follow-up. We identified two major dietary patterns, a snacking and a cooked foods pattern. Percentage body fat was positively associated (standardized β (se)) with maternal BMI at follow-up (0·10 (0·03); P = 0·003) and negatively associated with physical activity (−0·15 (0·05); P = 0·003, unadjusted for child gender), but not associated with the snacking (0·06 (0·03); P = 0·103) or cooked foods (−0·05 (0·07); P = 0·474) pattern. Boys were more active than girls (1470 v. 1314 mean vector magnitude counts/min; P < 0·0001) and had lower percentage body fat (13·8 v. 16·9 %; P < 0·0001).
Conclusions:In this population, maternal overweight and child physical activity, especially among girls, may be key factors for addressing child overweight/obesity. We did not demonstrate a relationship between the dietary patterns and body fatness, which may be related to limitations of the dietary data available.

There is limited evidence on the acceptability, feasibility and cost-effectiveness of task-sharing interventions to narrow the treatment gap for mental disorders in sub-Saharan Africa. The purpose of this article is to describe the rationale, aims and methods of the Africa Focus on Intervention Research for Mental health (AFFIRM) collaborative research hub. AFFIRM is investigating strategies for narrowing the treatment gap for mental disorders in sub-Saharan Africa in four areas. First, it is assessing the feasibility, acceptability and cost-effectiveness of task-sharing interventions by conducting randomised controlled trials in Ethiopia and South Africa. The AFFIRM Task-sharing for the Care of Severe mental disorders (TaSCS) trial in Ethiopia aims to determine the acceptability, affordability, effectiveness and sustainability of mental health care for people with severe mental disorder delivered by trained and supervised non-specialist, primary health care workers compared with an existing psychiatric nurse-led service. The AFFIRM trial in South Africa aims to determine the cost-effectiveness of a task-sharing counselling intervention for maternal depression, delivered by non-specialist community health workers, and to examine factors influencing the implementation of the intervention and future scale up. Second, AFFIRM is building individual and institutional capacity for intervention research in sub-Saharan Africa by providing fellowship and mentorship programmes for candidates in Ethiopia, Ghana, Malawi, Uganda and Zimbabwe. Each year five Fellowships are awarded (one to each country) to attend the MPhil in Public Mental Health, a joint postgraduate programme at the University of Cape Town and Stellenbosch University. AFFIRM also offers short courses in intervention research, and supports PhD students attached to the trials in Ethiopia and South Africa. Third, AFFIRM is collaborating with other regional National Institute of Mental Health funded hubs in Latin America, sub-Saharan Africa and south Asia, by designing and executing shared research projects related to task-sharing and narrowing the treatment gap. Finally, it is establishing a network of collaboration between researchers, non-governmental organisations and government agencies that facilitates the translation of research knowledge into policy and practice. This article describes the developmental process of this multi-site approach, and provides a narrative of challenges and opportunities that have arisen during the early phases. Crucial to the long-term sustainability of this work is the nurturing and sustaining of partnerships between African mental health researchers, policy makers, practitioners and international collaborators.
Scaling laws for the thrust production of flexible pitching panels

We present experimental results on the role of flexibility and aspect ratio in bio-inspired aquatic propulsion. Direct thrust and power measurements are used to determine the propulsive efficiency of flexible panels undergoing a leading-edge pitching motion. We find that flexible panels can give a significant amplification of thrust production of $\mathscr{O}(100{\unicode{x2013}} 200\hspace{0.167em} \% )$ and propulsive efficiency of $\mathscr{O}(100\hspace{0.167em} \% )$ when compared to rigid panels. The data highlight that the global maximum in propulsive efficiency across a range of panel flexibilities is achieved when two conditions are simultaneously satisfied: (i) the oscillation of the panel yields a Strouhal number in the optimal range ($0. 25\lt \mathit{St}\lt 0. 35$) predicted by Triantafyllou, Triantafyllou & Grosenbaugh (J. Fluid Struct., vol. 7, 1993, pp. 205–224); and (ii) this frequency of motion is tuned to the structural resonant frequency of the panel. In addition, new scaling laws for the thrust production and power input to the fluid are derived for the rigid and flexible panels. It is found that the dominant forces are the characteristic elastic force and the characteristic fluid force. In the flexible regime the data scale using the characteristic elastic force and in the rigid limit the data scale using the characteristic fluid force.

The Geriatric Mental State and a new computerized diagnostic system, AGECAT, are briefly described. A nomenclature for designating cases for epidemiological work is introduced. Concordance between AGECAT and psychiatrists' diagnoses for these studies, hospital and community based (total of 541 subjects), achieved overall kappa values of 0·84 for a psychiatric hospital sample and 0·74 for a community sample. The values for depression and organic illness specifically in these settings were psychiatric hospital 0·80/0·86, and community 0·80/0·88, respectively.

The psychological well-being of forty-four breast cancer patients was assessed shortly before and after surgery, and at three and twelve months post-operatively. Regression analysis revealed type of treatment, control over treatment and concern for appearance as significant predictors of nature of subsequent mood state. Results are discussed with reference to the theoretical position that type of severe life event can predict the nature of ensuing psychological disorder.

Three studies are reported using the Geriatric Mental State in one of its community forms on a total of 647 subjects aged over 65 and living in their own homes. The concordance between the computer diagnosis AGECAT and psychiatrists' diagnosis is at least as good in these replication samples as in the original studies (Copeland et al. 1986). AGECAT has been shown to be useful for epidemiological surveys and as a diagnostic guide for non-medical interviewers.

In 1945 we reported (Dick & Bull, 1945) the first observations on the effects of molybdenum in the diet of ruminants in limiting the accumulation of copper in their tissues.
Further observations (Dick, 1952) indicated that there was a third factor which materially altered the control by molybdenum of copper accumulation and this factor, present in lucerne hay, was identified as inorganic sulphate (Dick, 1953a). It was also shown that sulphate regulated molybdenum excretion (Dick, 1953b) in the urine and hence the level of molybdenum in circulating blood (Dick, 1953c).

The objectives of this study were to identify factors associated with Salmonella status at the farm, pen, and pig level; explore the nature of variation in the association between the pen-level Salmonella status and pen-level covariates, and pig-level Salmonella status and pig- and pen-level covariates; and to identify the relative importance of factors operating at geographical, farm, and pen level for Salmonella shedding of pigs. For these purposes, samples from 799 pigs and 374 pens on 80 farms in Ontario in 2004 were collected and bacteriologically tested in a cross-sectional study. Census division was the least variable level, and farm the most variable level for shedding. Increased frequency of disinfection and washing with cold water were positively associated with Salmonella positivity, whereas liquid and mash feed and completely closed barns were sparing factors. After farm, pen was the second most variable level for shedding. However, no measured pen-level variables were associated with Salmonella status of pigs or pens. The shedding of Salmonella at the pig level tended to be associated with pig weight, and there was no random variation around this association. Results of this study suggest that a herd test based on bacteriological culture would probably have higher sensitivity if growing animals of lower weight were sampled instead of market weight animals, and this might be beneficial for Salmonella monitoring.

An analysis is presented of the shock-wave configurations which will occur when a plane shock is incident on a double wedge for which the second wedge may have a greater (concave case) or a smaller (convex case) inclination than the first wedge. It is shown that seven different reflection processes may be expected depending on the Mach number of the incidnet shock Mi and the two wedge angles θ1w and θ2w. These processes may be defined by seven regiouns in the (θ1w,θ2w)-plane, for a given value of Mi. Each of the seven processes has been verified by sequences of shadowgraph and schlieren photographs.
A shock-polar analysis of each of the seven processes has provided infomation about the pressure changes and the wave structures which develop immediately behind the main reflections along the wedge surfaces. These wave structures have been verified experimentally, and two types have been observed; one normal to the reflecting surface, and the other in the form of a regular reflection. The criteria to determine which of thses configurations will occur have not yet been established.
It is believed that the present study will be of value in predicting the loading of shock waves on structures, and may lead to a better understanding of shock reflections form concave and convex cylindrical surfaces.

A non-stationary approach to the reflection of weak plane shocks is suggested as an alternative to the usual pseudo-stationary transformation. For regular reflection the non-stationary model produces results which are identical to those obtained using the pseudo-stationary assumption, but with simpler algebra. For weak Mach reflections, where the predictions of the pseudo-stationary model are in disagreement with experimental results, the non-stationary model predicts accurately the observed shapes and positions of the reflected and Mach stem shocks and the spatially varying flow properties behind these shocks. However, the non-stationary model predicts that the gas flows above and below the contact surface, relative to the triple point, are not quite parallel. Parallel flows could be obtained only in the limiting case of grazing incidence, when the reflected shock was sonic. The model is based on the experimental results presented in Part 1 of this paper.

Shock fronts and fluid-particle trajectories throughout a two-dimensional shock wave flow have been measured by multiple schlieren photography in a detailed study of the Mach reflection from a 10° wedge of plane uniform shocks with Mach numbers of 1.105, 1.240 and 1.415. Correction of optical distortions throughout the field of view permitted the positions and shapes of the shock fronts and the magnitudes and directions of the particle velocities to be measured with a high degree of accuracy. No departure from self-similarity of the flow fields could be detected. The cross-sections of the reflected shocks were found to be circular and centred on a point which moved with the velocity of the flow behind the incident shock. The triple-point trajectories were linear. The velocity of the curved Mach stem shock was found to be constant at any one height above the wedge surface and to decrease monotonically with height. A deviation from perpendicularity was noticed where the Mach stems met the surface of the wedge, the shocks having a slight forward inclination of as much as 1°. The experimental results cannot be completely explained using the classical three-shock theory and an alternative model for weak Mach reflection is developed in Part 2 of this paper.

A photogrammetrical technique has been used to study the interaction of two identical explosively produced spherical shock waves and to compare this interaction with the reflexion of one of the spherical shocks from the ground. It is postulated that there was no energy loss in the interaction of the two shock waves and that the interaction therefore simulated the reflexion of a spherical shock from an ideal non-energyabsorbing surface. The ‘ideal’ reflexions were compared with real reflexions from two types of ground surface: one smooth and the other rough. Experiments were carried out with the centres of the spherical shocks at two separations so that observations could be made of the interaction of shocks of different strength. Significant differences were shown to exist in both the strengths of the Mach shocks and in the triple-point trajectories over the different surfaces. The results are intended to aid in the evaluation of computer codes being developed to simulate spherical-shock reflexions from real surfaces.

Background
Associations between physical health and depression are consistent across cultures among adults up to 65 years of age. In later life, the impact of physical health on depression is much more substantial and may depend on sociocultural factors.
AimsTo examine cross-national differences in the association between physical health and depressive symptoms in elderly people across western Europe.
MethodFourteen community-based studies on depression in later life in nine western European countries contributed to a total study sample of 22 570 respondents aged 65 years and older. Measures were harmonised for depressive symptoms (EURO-D scale), functional limitations and chronic physical conditions.
ResultsIn the majority of the participating samples, the association of depressive symptoms with functional disability was stronger than with chronic physical conditions. Associations were slightly more pronounced in the UK and Ireland.
ConclusionsThe association between physical health and depressive symptoms in later life is consistent across western Europe.

The limitations of establishing neuropsychological diagnosis through psychological testing and psychiatric examination by clinicians are discussed, along with the need to define cases of illness in a standardized way for research. The GMS-HAS-AGECAT package is a standardized assessment of mental state and historical information about onset of illness, from which data are used in a computer-assisted method to derive clinically based diagnoses of the principal types of dementia, depression and other mental illness. Recording is made of co-morbid states and levels of diagnostic confidence. Agreement between psychiatrists on AECAT diagnoses ranges from kappa values of 0.76 to 0.88, and validity has now been tested further by outcome studies. A short description is given of the Medical Research Council, EURODEM, World Health Organization and Pan American Health Organization studies now using this method.

A detailed field and microstructural investigation of mineral fabrics in the late-Caledonian Galway Granite Batholith (∼400 Ma) provides insights into the relationship between emplacement-related deformation and crystallization state. These relationships are used to infer the regional instantaneous strain pattern at the time of intrusion. A Marginal Deformation Zone occurs in the granite along part of its northern sector, where planar fabrics are contact-parallel and dip steeply to the north. Within the Marginal Deformation Zone, the granite has similar patterns of pre- and post-RCMP (Rheologically Critical Melt Percentage) fabrics on either side of the NNE-trending Shannawona Fault Zone, which separates the Western and Central blocks of the batholith. Oblate pre-RCMP fabrics, which intensify towards the contact, are overprinted in a down-temperature continuum of deformation by co-axial post-RCMP fabrics that also become more intense towards the contact. At the southern edge of the Marginal Deformation Zone, deformation ceased before the granite reached its RCMP whereas, close to the contact, deformation ceased at ∼500°C. Within the Central Block, oblate fabrics also developed parallel with internal granite facies boundaries. Throughout the batholith, the fabrics formed by co-axial deformation as a result of lateral expansion operating in successive magma batches at the emplacement level. These intrusion-related fabrics are consistent with other evidence that indicates the Galway Granite was emplaced into a transtensional setting at the end of the Caledonian Orogeny.
A non-destructive immunoblotting technique for visualisation and analysis of the growth dynamics of Rhizoctonia solani

Immunoblotting combined with computer imaging and a simple, non-linear mathematical model were used to demonstrate the potential of a technique for non-destructive visualisation and analysis of fungal growth of Rhizoctonia solani over the surface of non-sterile sand. Immunoblotting detected actively growing regions of mycelium enabling visualisation of individual hyphae at the colony edge. A zone of active growth was detected expanding radially over time. Active growth did not continue in the centre of the fungal colony leading to the development of a ring of mycelium surrounding the inoculum. Change in the density of actively growing mycelium with distance from the inoculum unit was summarised for each colony at each time by a Gaussian function, describing a wave of actively growing mycelium, symmetrical in density about its centre but differing amongst replicate colonies. The effectiveness of the immunoblotting technique to detect differences in colony growth was tested by comparing the growth of replicate colonies for two contrasting isolates of R. solani. When both isolates of R. solani were grown at 23 °C the amplitude of the wave increased to a maximum and then decayed over time, the location of the centre of the wave moved outwards at a constant rate, whilst the width of the wave increased. Increasing the temperature to 28 °, accelerated this intrinsic growth process for one isolate, but retarded growth of the other.
Bacteria associated with Stagonospora (Septoria) nodorum increase pathogenicity of the fungus

In studies with a laboratory isolate of the fungal pathogen Stagonospora (Septoria) nodorum three different isolates of bacteria were closely associated with the fungus. Bacteria were also closely associated with fresh isolates of S. nodorum obtained from artificially and naturally infected field material. Although a range of bacteria was isolated, only one type of bacterium was found to be associated with each isolate of S. nodorum. In co-inoculation studies with pycnidiospores of the fungus on detached leaves, some of the bacterial isolates significantly increased the pathogenicity of the fungus, particularly Xanthomonas maltophilia, Sphingobacterium multivorum, Enterobacter agglomerans and Erwinia amylovora. Evidence is presented indicating that one of the ways that the ‘helper bacteria’ may assist in the establishment of infections is by the production of lipases that were not detected in germinating fungal spores.
