Summary
In 2015, a robust strain of slash fiction began to explore the nature of the intimacy shared between aides-de-camp Alexander Hamilton and John Laurens during the American Revolution. Comparing this vast body of writing to popular genres of eighteenth-century fiction, this chapter frames the phenomenon known as "Historical Lams" (Lams being a portmanteau formed by fusing the first syllables of each surname) as the great queer epistolary novel that got away. More precisely, I examine how literary fandom surrounding the Hamilton-Laurens bond ultimately theorizes the cultural function of fiction through eighteenth-century discourses integral to the rise of the novel. I conclude by arguing that this literature offers a valuable framework for reconsidering the world-building potential of reception in the making of queer pasts.

This work characterizes the vanishing of the Fourier coefficients of all CM (Complex Multiplication) eta quotients. As consequences, we recover Serre’s characterization about that of $\eta(12z)^{2}$ and recent results of Chang on the pth coefficients of $\eta(4z)^{6}$ and $\eta(6z)^{4}$. Moreover, we generalize the results on the cases of weight 1 to the setting of binary quadratic forms.

Summary
What do Deborah Sampson/Robert Shurtliff, Charity Bryant, Sylvia Drake, and Fitz-Greene Halleck all share in common? Each illustrates the need for a queer crip method in early American studies. Too often, disciplinary conventions have isolated the queer past from disability history. Stories of gender variance and sexual difference have deployed ableist rhetorics to legitimize recuperation. Meanwhile, histories of disability have highlighted the way preindustrial divisions of labor led families to make accommodations for disabilities without challenging heterosexist suppositions about what counts as kinship. This chapter examines the discursive tools of self-fashioning, erotic built interiors, and sensorial aesthetics that early national figures harnessed to compose queer disabled livelihoods. In a reconsideration of the focus on (de)pathologization in queer theory and disability studies, I propose a method attuned to sites of microhistorical transition, where queer disabled embodiment permitted a tailoring of one’s world to identities, intimacies, and forms of communication otherwise unattainable.

Summary
This chapter reads the late nineteenth-century genres of American naturalism and regionalism through the prism of climate, and finds that their authors depict characters whose characteristics are shaped by their responses to their ambient environments, including climate, and by the inherited effects of their ancestors’ adaptations to theirs. It argues that their thinking about climate was informed by the popular Lamarckian science of their post-Darwinian evolutionary era, by the climate theory of the historian Hippolyte Taine, and by turn-of-the-century geography. In the decades during which Frank Norris, Charles Chesnutt, Edith Wharton, and Hamlin Garland were at work on questions of determinism and/or a “determined indeterminacy,” climatic, genetic, medico-psychiatric, and sociological models of identity vied for authority. The writers drew their representations of the making of Americans from these competing claims.

Background
The prevalence of mental disorders among Black, Latino, and Asian adults is lower than among Whites. Factors that explain these differences are largely unknown. We examined whether racial/ethnic differences in exposure to traumatic events (TEs) or vulnerability to trauma-related psychopathology explained the lower rates of psychopathology among racial/ethnic minorities.
MethodsWe estimated the prevalence of TE exposure and associations with onset of DSM-IV depression, anxiety and substance disorders and with lifetime post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in the Collaborative Psychiatric Epidemiology Surveys, a national sample (N = 13 775) with substantial proportions of Black (35.9%), Latino (18.9%), and Asian Americans (14.9%).
ResultsTE exposure varied across racial/ethnic groups. Asians were most likely to experience organized violence – particularly being a refugee – but had the lowest exposure to all other TEs. Blacks had the greatest exposure to participation in organized violence, sexual violence, and other TEs, Latinos had the highest exposure to physical violence, and Whites were most likely to experience accidents/injuries. Racial/ethnic minorities had lower odds ratios of depression, anxiety, and substance disorder onset relative to Whites. Neither variation in TE exposure nor vulnerability to psychopathology following TEs across racial/ethnic groups explained these differences. Vulnerability to PTSD did vary across groups, however, such that Asians were less likely and Blacks more likely to develop PTSD following TEs than Whites.
ConclusionsLower prevalence of mental disorders among racial/ethnic minorities does not appear to reflect reduced vulnerability to TEs, with the exception of PTSD among Asians. This highlights the importance of investigating other potential mechanisms underlying racial/ethnic differences in psychopathology.

The deep subsurface of other planetary bodies is of special interest for robotic and human exploration. The subsurface provides access to planetary interior processes, thus yielding insights into planetary formation and evolution. On Mars, the subsurface might harbour the most habitable conditions. In the context of human exploration, the subsurface can provide refugia for habitation from extreme surface conditions. We describe the fifth Mine Analogue Research (MINAR 5) programme at 1 km depth in the Boulby Mine, UK in collaboration with Spaceward Bound NASA and the Kalam Centre, India, to test instruments and methods for the robotic and human exploration of deep environments on the Moon and Mars. The geological context in Permian evaporites provides an analogue to evaporitic materials on other planetary bodies such as Mars. A wide range of sample acquisition instruments (NASA drills, Small Planetary Impulse Tool (SPLIT) robotic hammer, universal sampling bags), analytical instruments (Raman spectroscopy, Close-Up Imager, Minion DNA sequencing technology, methane stable isotope analysis, biomolecule and metabolic life detection instruments) and environmental monitoring equipment (passive air particle sampler, particle detectors and environmental monitoring equipment) was deployed in an integrated campaign. Investigations included studying the geochemical signatures of chloride and sulphate evaporitic minerals, testing methods for life detection and planetary protection around human-tended operations, and investigations on the radiation environment of the deep subsurface. The MINAR analogue activity occurs in an active mine, showing how the development of space exploration technology can be used to contribute to addressing immediate Earth-based challenges. During the campaign, in collaboration with European Space Agency (ESA), MINAR was used for astronaut familiarization with future exploration tools and techniques. The campaign was used to develop primary and secondary school and primary to secondary transition curriculum materials on-site during the campaign which was focused on a classroom extra vehicular activity simulation.

Digenean metacercariae of fishes from the lagoon flats of Palmyra Atoll, Eastern Indo-Pacific

Although many studies on the taxonomy of digenean trematodes of marine fishes have been completed in the Eastern Indo-Pacific (EIP) marine ecoregion, only a few have considered metacercarial stages. Here, the results are presented of a taxonomic survey of the digenean metacercariae of fishes from Palmyra Atoll, a remote and relatively pristine US National Wildlife Refuge located 1680 km SSW of Hawaii. Up to 425 individual fish were collected, comprising 42 fish species, from the sand flats bordering the lagoon of the atoll. Quantitative parasitological examinations of each fish were performed. Morphological descriptions of the encountered digenean metacercariae are provided, together with their prevalence, mean intensities, host and tissue-use. Up to 33,964 individuals were recovered representing 19 digenean metacercaria species from eight families. The species composition of digeneans in lagoon fishes at Palmyra Atoll is a subset of what has previously been reported for the EIP. Further, the large diversity and abundance of metacercariae reported in this study highlight the utility of including this group in future ecological research in the EIP marine ecoregion.

Point prevalence of diabetes, obesity, hyperlipidaemia, hypertension and smoking in outpatients on clozapine

Objectives: Patients with schizophrenia are known to be at higher risk than the general population of cardiovascular disease. Clozapine has been associated in the literature with high levels of cardiovascular risk factors such as weight gain, diabetes, hyperlipidaemia and hypertension. We set out to determine the prevalence of these risk factors in a population of Irish psychiatric patients.
Method: In February 2006 we measured body mass index, fasting blood glucose, haemoglobin A1c (HbA1c), lipid levels, mean blood pressure and smoking rates among all outpatients prescribed clozapine attending an urban, community based mental health service.
Results: There were 50 outpatients (33 male; 17 female) on clozapine and they had been taking it for a mean of 5.4 years (mean daily dose 428.8mg). The mean body mass index was 28.3. Patients had gained a mean of 8kg since commencing clozapine. One patient had been diagnosed with diabetes. Of the other 49 none met diagnostic criteria for diabetes. The mean fasting blood glucose was 5.5mmol/l and the mean HbA1c was 5.7%. One patient was on treatment for hyperlipidaemia. The mean fasting cholesterol among the other 49 patients was 5.4mmol/l, while the mean fasting triglycerides was 2.1 mmol/l. Thirty (61.2%) had a fasting cholesterol greater than 5.0mmol/l, while 18 (36.7%) had triglycerides of greater than 2.0mmol/l. Three patients were on treatment for hypertension. Thirty-six of the 50 (72%) smoked (mean 13 cigarettes per day).
Conclusions: The prevalence of obesity, diabetes, hyperlipidaemia and hypertension in this population was high but lower than might have been expected from US studies. It is important that cardiovascular risk factors are closely monitored and actively addressed in this at risk population.
Contributions of parental alcoholism, prenatal substance exposure, and genetic transmission to child ADHD risk: a female twin study

Background. Genetic influences have been shown to play a major role in determining the risk of attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). In addition, prenatal exposure to nicotine and/or alcohol has also been suggested to increase risk of the disorder. Little attention, however, has been directed to investigating the roles of genetic transmission and prenatal exposure simultaneously.
Method. Diagnostic telephone interview data from parents of Missouri adolescent female twin pairs born during 1975–1985 were analyzed. Logistic regression models were fitted to interview data from a total of 1936 twin pairs (1091 MZ and 845 DZ pairs) to determine the relative contributions of parental smoking and drinking behavior (both during and outside of pregnancy) as risk factors for DSM-IV ADHD. Structural equation models were fitted to determine the extent of residual genetic and environmental influences on ADHD risk while controlling for effects of prenatal and parental predictors on risk.
Results. ADHD was more likely to be diagnosed in girls whose mothers or fathers were alcohol dependent, whose mothers reported heavy alcohol use during pregnancy, and in those with low birth weight. Controlling for other risk factors, risk was not significantly increased in those whose mothers smoked during pregnancy. After allowing for effects of prenatal and childhood predictors, 86% of the residual variance in ADHD risk was attributable to genetic effects and 14% to non-shared environmental influences.
Conclusions. Prenatal and parental risk factors may not be important mediators of influences on risk with much of the association between these variables and ADHD appearing to be indirect.
Selective dorsal rhizotomy: meta-analysis of three randomized controlled trials

This study is a comparative analysis and meta-analysis of three randomized clinical trials. Children with spastic diplegia received either ‘selective’ dorsal rhizotomy (SDR) plus physiotherapy (SDR+PT) or PT without SDR (PT-only). Common outcome measures were used for spasticity (Ashworth scale) and function (Gross Motor Function Measure [GMFM]). Baseline and 9- to 12-month outcome data were pooled (n=90). At baseline, 82 children were under 8 years old and 65 had Gross Motor Function Classification System level II or III disability. Pooled Ashworth data analysis confirmed a reduction of spasticity with SDR+PT (mean change score difference –1.2; Wilcoxon p<0.001). Pooled GMFM data revealed greater functional improvement with SDR+PT (difference in change score +4.0, p=0.008). Multivariate analysis in the SDR+PT group revealed a direct relationship between percentage of dorsal root tissue transected and functional improvement. SDR+PT is efficacious in reducing spasticity in children with spastic diplegia and has a small positive effect on gross motor function.
Sensitive enhanced diffusivities for flows with fluctuating mean winds: a two-parameter study

Enhanced diffusion coefficients arising from the theory of periodic homogenized averaging for a passive scalar diffusing in the presence of a large-scale, fluctuating mean wind superimposed upon a small-scale, steady flow with non-trivial topology are studied. The purpose of the study is to assess how the extreme sensitivity of enhanced diffusion coefficients to small variations in large-scale flow parameters previously exhibited for steady flows in two spatial dimensions is modified by either the presence of temporal fluctuation, or the consideration of fully three-dimensional steady flow. We observe the various mixing parameters (Péclet, Strouhal and periodic Péclet numbers) and related non-dimensionalizations. We document non-monotonic Péclet number dependence in the enhanced diffusivities, and address how this behaviour is camouflaged with certain non-dimensional groups. For asymptotically large Strouhal number at fixed, bounded Péclet number, we establish that rapid wind fluctuations do not modify the steady theory, whereas for asymptotically small Strouhal number the enhanced diffusion coefficients are shown to be represented as an average over the steady geometry. The more difficult case of large Péclet number is considered numerically through the use of a conjugate gradient algorithm. We consider Péclet-number-dependent Strouhal numbers, S = QPe−(1+γ), and present numerical evidence documenting critical values of γ which distinguish the enhanced diffusivities as arising simply from steady theory (γ < −1) for which fluctuation provides no averaging, fully unsteady theory (γ ∈ (−1, 0)) with closure coefficients plagued by non-monotonic Péclet number dependence, and averaged steady theory (γ > 0). The transitional case with γ = 0 is examined in detail. Steady averaging is observed to agree well with the full simulations in this case for Q [les ] 1, but fails for larger Q. For non-sheared flow, with Q [les ] 1, weak temporal fluctuation in a large-scale wind is shown to reduce the sensitivity arising from the steady flow geometry; however, the degree of this reduction is itself strongly dependent upon the details of the imposed fluctuation. For more intense temporal fluctuation, strongly aligned orthogonal to the steady wind, time variation averages the sensitive scaling existing in the steady geometry, and the present study observes a Pe1 scaling behaviour in the enhanced diffusion coefficients at moderately large Péclet number. Finally, we conclude with the numerical documentation of sensitive scaling behaviour (similar to the two-dimensional steady case) in fully three dimensional ABC flow.

We apply a likelihood analysis to pulsar detections, pulsar upper limits, and diffuse background measurements from the OSSE and EGRET instruments to constrain the γ-rays pulsar luminosity law. We find a steeper dependence on period and magnetic field at OSSE than at EGRET energies. We also find that pulsars may be an important component of the OSSE diffuse flux, but are most likely not important for EGRET. We estimate that as many as half of the unidentified EGRET sources may be γ-rays pulsars. Furthermore, we predict that GLAST will detect roughly 1000 γ-rays pulsars, only 100 of which are currently known.
