The effect of 3,6-dichloro-o-anisic acid (dicamba) was studied on wild buckwheat (Polygonum convolvulus L.) and wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) at two growth stages. Wild buckwheat, treated when 5 to 8 cm tall, was very susceptible to dicamba which caused rapid dehydration of the leaves and growth of callus tissue at stem internodes. Wild buckwheat, treated when flowering, increased in growth 2 days after treatment and then decreased after 4 days. Wheat growth tended to increase in all plant parts after treatment with dicamba at both the 2 to 3-leaf and the boot stages. Dicamba increased the RNA and protein content in wild buckwheat at both growth stages and in wheat at the boot stage. Dicamba affected the transition temperature and precipitation of reconstituted nucleohistone but not the uncombined nucleic acid or histone in vitro, indicating that a DNA-histone-dicamba complex had occurred. The binding of dicamba to protein varied with different proteins and reduced the UV absorbance of the bound proteins.

Background:
Volumetric atrophy and microstructural alterations in diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) measures of the hippocampus have been reported in people with Alzheimer's disease (AD) and mild cognitive impairment (MCI). However, no study to date has jointly investigated concomitant microstructural and volumetric changes of the hippocampus in dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB).
Methods:A total of 84 subjects (23 MCI, 17 DLB, 14 AD, and 30 healthy controls) were recruited for a multi-modal imaging (3T MRI and DTI) study that included neuropsychological evaluation. Freesurfer was used to segment the total hippocampus and delineate its subfields. The hippocampal segmentations were co-registered to the mean diffusivity (MD) and fractional anisotropy (FA) maps obtained from the DTI images.
Results:Both AD and MCI groups showed significantly smaller hippocampal volumes compared to DLB and controls, predominantly in the CA1 and subiculum subfields. Compared to controls, hippocampal MD was elevated in AD, but not in MCI. DLB was characterized by both volumetric and microstructural preservation of the hippocampus. In MCI, higher hippocampal MD was associated with greater atrophy of the hippocampus and CA1 region. Hippocampal volume was a stronger predictor of memory scores compared to MD within the MCI group.
Conclusions:Through a multi-modal integration, we report novel evidence that the hippocampus in DLB is characterized by both macrostructural and microstructural preservation. Contrary to recent suggestions, our findings do not support the view that DTI measurements of the hippocampus are superior to volumetric changes in characterizing group differences, particularly between MCI and controls.

We studied neuroinflammation in individuals with late-life, depression, as a risk factor for dementia, using [11C]PK11195 positron emission tomography (PET). Five older participants with major depression and 13 controls underwent PET and multimodal 3T magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), with blood taken to measure C-reactive protein (CRP). We found significantly higher CRP levels in those with late-life depression and raised [11C]PK11195 binding compared with controls in brain regions associated with depression, including subgenual anterior cingulate cortex, and significant hippocampal subfield atrophy in cornu ammonis 1 and subiculum. Our findings suggest neuroinflammation requires further investigation in late-life depression, both as a possible aetiological factor and a potential therapeutic target.

The haemocytes of adults of the stonefly, Acroneuria arenosa Pictet, are described and figured as they appear in vivo in the wings and as fixed and stained elements in blood films prepared in four different ways. The adequacy of the blood films is judged by comparing the haemocytes there with those in vivo, and the cell complex is interpreted from both aspects. Four categories of haemocytes, the prohaemocytes, plasmatocytes, granular haemocytes, and hyaline haemocytes, are denoted and characterized within these visual limits. The validity of one category, the hyaline haemocytes, is questioned on the basis of cell counts and cell morphology but is tentatively retained. Variations in the haemocyte complex during the adult life is considered. The progressive decrease in relative numbers of circulating plasmatocytes with age is shown to be due to their adherence to the walls of wing veins and presumably to other tissues within the body.

Photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting for hydrogen production is a promising technology that uses sunlight and water to produce renewable hydrogen with oxygen as a by-product. In the expanding field of PEC hydrogen production, the use of standardized screening methods and reporting has emerged as a necessity. This article is intended to provide guidance on key practices in characterization of PEC materials and proper reporting of efficiencies. Presented here are the definitions of various efficiency values that pertain to PEC, with an emphasis on the importance of solar-to-hydrogen efficiency, as well as a flow chart with standard procedures for PEC characterization techniques for planar photoelectrode materials (i.e., not suspensions of particles) with a focus on single band gap absorbers. These guidelines serve as a foundation and prelude to a much more complete and in-depth discussion of PEC techniques and procedures presented elsewhere.
