In 2008 January the 24th Chinese expedition team successfully deployed the Chinese Small Telescope ARray (CSTAR) to Dome A, the highest point on the Antarctic plateau. CSTAR consists of four 14.5cm optical telescopes, each with a different filter (g, r, i and open) and has a 4.5°×4.5° field of view (FOV). Based on the CSTAR data, initial statistics of astronomical observational site quality and light curves of variable objects were obtained. To reach higher photometric quality, we are continuing to work to overcome the effects of uneven cirrus cloud cirrus, optical “ghosts” and intra-pixel sensitivity. The snow surface stability is also tested for further astronomical observational instrument and for glaciology studies.

While the summit of the Antarctic Plateau has long been expected to harbor the best ground-based sites for terahertz (THz) frequency astronomical investigations, it is only recently that direct observations of exceptional THz atmospheric transmission and stability have been obtained. These observations, in combination with recent technological advancements in astronomical instrumentation and autonomous field platforms, make the recognition and realization of terahertz observatories on the high plateau feasible and timely. Here, we will explore the context of terahertz astronomy in the era of Herschel, and the crucial role that observatories on the Antarctic Plateau can play. We explore the important scientific questions to which observations from this unique environment may be most productively applied. We examine the importance and complementarity of Antarctic THz astronomy in the light of contemporary facilities such as ALMA, CCAT, SOFIA and (U)LDB ballooning. Finally, building from the roots of THz facilities in Antarctica to present efforts, we broadly highlight future facilities that will exploit the unique advantages of the Polar Plateau and provide a meaningful, lasting astrophysical legacy.

Summary
Key points
1. Ferns both respond to and impact ecosystem nutrient cycling.
2. Most ferns and lycophytes acquire nutrients through roots and generally in association with endomycorrhizal fungi. Ferns also acquire nutrients through direct absorption from decomposing litter and exceptionally through association with either ants or nitrogen-fixing cyanobacteria.
3. At a local scale, the vegetative cover and richness of ferns appears to be greatest on sites with high fertility. However, ferns probably make the greatest proportional contribution to total plant biomass on infertile soils.
4. Nutrient levels of fern leaves span a wide range of nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) concentrations but ferns still have low N concentrations relative to seed plants. The decomposition rates of fern litter vary widely among species and habitats.
5. Ferns have low leaf calcium (Ca) concentrations relative to seed plants at any given site. Variation among sites in the amount of fern biomass will influence soil Ca cycling.
Introduction
Soil fertility and associated soil biodiversity are critical drivers of vegetation composition and function (Bardgett, 2005), even in human-modified ecosystems (Yaalon, 2007). Adaptations to persist and compete for nutrients on sites of varying fertility drive the development of variation among species and help to determine how species are distributed across the landscape (Grime, 2002; Callaway, 2007). Contrary to the popular notion that ferns are poorly adapted to current environmental conditions, they present a bewildering array of strategies and have radiated into the same habitats as seed plants.

PLATO is a fully-robotic observatory designed for operation in Antarctica. It generates its own electricity (about 1 kW), heat (sufficient to keep two 10-foot shipping containers comfortably above 0°C when the outside temperature is at -70°C), and connects to the internet using the Iridium satellite system (providing ~30 MB/day of data transfer). Following a successful first year of operation at Dome A during 2008, PLATO was upgraded with new instruments for 2009.

In January 2005, members of a Chinese expedition team were the first humans to visit Dome A on the Antarctic plateau, a site predicted to be one of the very best astronomical sites on earth. In 2006, the Chinese Center for Antarctic Astronomy (CCAA) was founded to promote the development of astronomy in Antarctica, especially at Dome A. CCAA has since taken part in two traverses to Dome A, organized by the Polar Research Institute of China (PRIC), in the austral summers of 2007/2008 and 2008/2009. These traverses resulted in the installation of many site-testing and science instruments, supported by the PLATO observatory. The Chinese Small Telescope ARray (CSTAR) has produced excellent results from Dome A. Our future plans include further site-testing work, and the following full-scale science instruments: three 0.5-m Antarctic Schmidt Telescopes (AST3), and a proposed 4-m telescope for wide-field infrared high spatial-resolution surveys. The first AST3 telescope is under construction and is scheduled for installation in 2011.

The THz spectral region includes a number of important transitions which allow us to trace the evolution of the interstellar medium. Because of the opacity of the atmosphere in this spectral range, the best sites for ground-based THz observations are on the Antarctic Plateau; of these sites, Dome A is expected to be the best. THz survey science can be carried out with small telescopes, easing logistical constraints. By deploying a submillimetre-wave tipper/ telescope to Dome A, we have trialled several technologies for such an instrument, and we are able to test whether the site quality is sufficient for THz surveys.

PLATO is a 6 tonne completely self-contained robotic observatory that provides its own heat, electricity, and satellite communications. It was deployed to Dome A in Antarctica in January 2008 by the Chinese expedition team, and is now in its second year of operation. PLATO is operating four 14.5cm optical telescopes with 1k × 1k CCDs, a wide-field sky camera with a 2k × 2k CCD and Sloan g, r, i filters, a fibre-fed spectrograph to measure the UV to near-IR sky spectrum, a 0.2m terahertz telescope, two sonic radars giving 1m resolution data on the boundary layer to a height of 180m, a 15m tower, meteorological sensors, and 8 web cameras. Beginning in 2010/11 PLATO will be upgraded to support a Multi Aperture Scintillation Sensor and three AST3 0.5m schmidt telescopes, with 10k × 10 CCDs and 100TB/annum data requirements.

Summary
In the absence of a compelling model of moral functioning, the field of moral development has been languishing and is in critical need of resuscitation. Although in recent years some important conceptual insights have been advanced, corresponding empirical paradigms have been in short supply; and so the most promising theories remain largely unsubstantiated and without practical “legs.” As a further consequence, moral educators have had few viable frameworks on which to base intervention efforts. This vacuity is primarily attributable to the once inordinate interest in moral rationality, an interest that initially gave spark to the field and fanned its flames for a time, but is an enterprise now reduced to a few smoldering embers.
This focus on moral cognition arose through the magisterial contributions of Piaget (1932/1977) and Kohlberg (1969) who heralded the cognitive revolution within psychology. These structural-developmental theorists forcefully advocated the notion that the fundamental core of moral functioning entailed processes of deliberative moral judgment. Their models embraced the formalist assumptions of the philosophical mindset of the Enlightenment Era, which conceptualized human nature dualistically, pitting rationality against personality. Moral rationality was hoisted onto a pedestal, regarded as not only necessary to define the moral quality of situations, but also as imbued with sufficient oomph to motivate moral action. In striking contrast, however, emotions, personal desires, and other aspects of personality were tossed into the garbage “bag of virtues” (Kohlberg, 1981, p. 78), regarded as potentially contaminating influences that the moral agent must eschew in order to adhere to the purer dictates of reason.

Differences in moral reasoning concerning hypothetical versus real-life conflicts were examined with a sample of 44 youths (aged 15–18 years) who were classified as psychopathic, delinquent, or normal. All subjects were individually interviewed and assessed on (a) Hare's Psychopathy Checklist, (b) two of Kohlberg's hypothetical moral dilemmas, and (c) a subject-generated real-life moral dilemma. The results revealed that the normal youths attained a higher level of moral reasoning than either the delinquents or psychopaths. All groups scored lower on the real-life than the hypothetical dilemmas, indicating that hypothetical dilemmas may best elicit a person's level of moral reasoning competence, whereas real-life dilemmas may entail factors that lower the level of reasoning used in a situation of moral conflict. These two dilemma types also were found to elicit differing moral orientations. Finally, psychopaths were found to orient more to egoistic concerns than did delinquents when discussing real-life dilemmas.

Dome A, the summit of the Antarctic plateau, is expected to have even better atmospheric conditions for ground-based astronomy than Dome C. Instruments to evaluate and exploit Dome A's astronomical potential must operate within logistical constraints, which are currently very stringent. Instrumentation now at Dome A exemplifies the techniques and solutions required by this environment. Future instrumentation and infrastructure will allow the qualities of the site to be exploited much more fully.
