Intact moral decision-making in adults with moderate-severe traumatic brain injury

Background and aim:
Deficits in decision-making are a common consequence of moderate-severe traumatic brain injury (TBI). Less is known, however, about how individuals with TBI perform on moral decision-making tasks. To address this gap in the literature, the current study probed moral decision-making in a sample of individuals with TBI using a widely employed experimental measure.
Methods/hypothesis:We administered a set of 50 trolley-type dilemmas to 31 individuals with TBI and 31 demographically matched, neurotypical comparison participants. We hypothesized that individuals with TBI would be more likely to offer utilitarian responses to personal dilemmas than neurotypical peers.
Results:In contrast to our hypothesis, we observed that individuals with TBI were not more likely to offer utilitarian responses for personal dilemmas.
Conclusion:Our results suggest that moral decision-making ability is not uniformly impaired following TBI. Rather, neuroanatomical (lesion location) and demographic (age at injury) characteristics may be more predictive of a disruption in moral decision-making than TBI diagnosis or injury severity alone. These results inform the neurobiology of moral decision-making and have implications for characterizing patterns of spared and impaired cognitive abilities in TBI.

The first demonstration of laser action in ruby was made in 1960 by T. H. Maiman of Hughes Research Laboratories, USA. Many laboratories worldwide began the search for lasers using different materials, operating at different wavelengths. In the UK, academia, industry and the central laboratories took up the challenge from the earliest days to develop these systems for a broad range of applications. This historical review looks at the contribution the UK has made to the advancement of the technology, the development of systems and components and their exploitation over the last 60 years.

We describe an ultra-wide-bandwidth, low-frequency receiver recently installed on the Parkes radio telescope. The receiver system provides continuous frequency coverage from 704 to 4032 MHz. For much of the band ( ${\sim}60\%$ ), the system temperature is approximately 22 K and the receiver system remains in a linear regime even in the presence of strong mobile phone transmissions. We discuss the scientific and technical aspects of the new receiver, including its astronomical objectives, as well as the feed, receiver, digitiser, and signal processor design. We describe the pipeline routines that form the archive-ready data products and how those data files can be accessed from the archives. The system performance is quantified, including the system noise and linearity, beam shape, antenna efficiency, polarisation calibration, and timing stability.

Background
We evaluated the effectiveness and cost-effectiveness of the Incredible Years® Teacher Classroom Management (TCM) programme as a universal intervention, given schools’ important influence on child mental health.
MethodsA two-arm, pragmatic, parallel group, superiority, cluster randomised controlled trial recruited three cohorts of schools (clusters) between 2012 and 2014, randomising them to TCM (intervention) or Teaching As Usual (TAU-control). TCM was delivered to teachers in six whole-day sessions, spread over 6 months. Schools and teachers were not masked to allocation. The primary outcome was teacher-reported Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ) Total Difficulties score. Random effects linear regression and marginal logistic regression models using Generalised Estimating Equations were used to analyse the outcomes. Trial registration: ISRCTN84130388.
ResultsEighty schools (2075 children) were enrolled; 40 (1037 children) to TCM and 40 (1038 children) to TAU. Outcome data were collected at 9, 18, and 30-months for 96, 89, and 85% of children, respectively. The intervention reduced the SDQ-Total Difficulties score at 9 months (mean (s.d.):5.5 (5.4) in TCM v. 6.2 (6.2) in TAU; adjusted mean difference = −1.0; 95% CI−1.9 to −0.1; p = 0.03) but this did not persist at 18 or 30 months. Cost-effectiveness analysis suggested that TCM may be cost-effective compared with TAU at 30-months, but this result was associated with uncertainty so no firm conclusions can be drawn. A priori subgroup analyses suggested TCM is more effective for children with poor mental health.
ConclusionsTCM provided a small, short-term improvement to children's mental health particularly for children who are already struggling.

Summary
Malcolm Edwards’ interview with Wolfe first appeared in Vector, May– June 1973, following the publication of The Fifth Head of Cerberus: Three Novellas(1972). Although Wolfe had only published his first short story, ‘The Dead Man’, in 1965, his work had already attracted critical acclaim. ‘The Island of Doctor Death and Other Stories’ (1970) and ‘Against the Lafayette Escadrille’ (1972) had both earned Nebula Award nominations (in 1971 and 1973 respectively); and ‘The Fifth Head of Cerberus’, the opening novella of the collection, had been shortlisted for both the Hugo and Nebula Awards in 1973. Here Wolfe discusses his life and early career.
ME: Could you first of all tell us something about your background, how you came into writing, and why sf?
GW: I was born in Brooklyn, New York. This came home to me, to me who had always called myself a Texan and thought of myself as a Texan, when I read that Thomas Wolfe ‘warmed up’ for writing by walking the night streets of Brooklyn. He was from the hill country of northwest North Carolina and so was my great, great grandfather – making us, at least presumptively, distant cousins. Hemingway sharpened twenty pencils and Willa Cather read a passage from her Bible, but Thomas Wolfe, bless him, swung his big body down Brooklyn streets and may have been thrashing out some weighty problem in Of Time and the Riverduring the early hours of Thursday 7 May, 1931. I hope so. I like to think of him out there on the sidewalk worrying about Gene Gant and flaying NYU.
At any rate I was born in that city at the southwestern tip of Long Island. My parents lived in New Jersey at the time, but they moved and moved. To Peoria, where I played with Rosemary Dietsch who lived next door, and her brothers Robert and Richard. To Massachusetts, where little Ruth McCann caught her hand in our car door. To Logan, Ohio, my father's home, where Boyd Wright and I got stung by bumble bees that had nested in our woodshed. To Des Moines, where a redheaded boy taught me chess while we were both in the second grade. Then to Dallas for a year, and at last to Houston, which became my home town, the place I was ‘from’.

This study reports the effects of a 12-week multimodular cognitive rehabilitation training program on memory performance in two groups of older adults. In the Memory Training module, participants were instructed on the nature of memory and how to improve memory performance; internal and external strategies were described and practiced over the training sessions. Memory performance was assessed by four tests: Alpha Span, Brown-Peterson, Hopkins Verbal Learning Test − Revised (HVLT-R), and Logical Stories. One group received training on entry into the study (Early Training Group, ETG), the other after a 3-month delay (Late Training Group, LTG). The results showed no training-related improvement in working memory (Alpha Span), primary memory (Brown-Peterson, HVLT-R), or recognition memory (HVLT-R). While the most direct analyses of a training effect (analyses of covariance) rarely demonstrated significant effects, exploratory analyses provided some evidence for a training benefit in several measures of secondary memory (Logical Stories; HVLT-R) and strategic processing (Brown-Peterson; Logical Stories; HVLT-R). Positive results were largely restricted to the ETG, possibly because the LTG lost motivation as a consequence of their delayed training. The results need to be treated with caution, but are promising for the rehabilitation of memory functioning in older adults (JINS, 2007, 13, 132–142.)

Introduction
Although the total global reservoir of carbon is massive (more than 1019 kg), only a very small fraction of this carbon is actively involved in the fluxes of the carbon cycle, most of the Earth's carbon being locked away in sediments, in carbonate in oceans and in igneous rocks and fossil fuels. The Earth's active carbon pool consists of carbon in living organisms, carbon in the atmosphere and carbon in soil organic matter. It has been estimated that the mass of carbon in soil organic matter amounts to about 3 × 1015 kg and this is approximately five times the size of the atmospheric pool (Bohn, 1976). The latter pool is approximately the same size as that in living organisms.
Components of soil organic matter
Soil organic matter can, initially, be largely sub-divided into three main fractions:
(a) The decomposing residues of plants (as well as animals and microbes).
(b) The living soil biota – microorganisms, animals and plant roots.
(c) Resistant organic matter – chemically/physically protected.
Under most circumstances, more than 90% of soil organic matter is in resistant forms, although there is a continual flow of carbon from one pool to another. Figure 3.1 illustrates how this continual ‘processing’ of soil organic matter occurs. Generally, the system is in a state of dynamic equilibrium, with the organic matter pools remaining more or less constant with time.
Decomposing residues of plants
By far the most important input to soil organic matter is in the form of plant residues.

Summary
It doesn't matter who you are or where you are, your very existence and survival depend upon the chemical reactions taking place all the time in soil. Indeed, this book itself owes its existence to the same reactions. The paper originates from trees grown in soil, the ink is from chemicals traceable back to the soil, and the authors are mere links in a complex food chain passing through soil-based cycles. The longevity of their role depends upon soil-derived food and regulation of the composition of the atmosphere by chemical reactions controlling the growth of photo synthesising plants. Of all the scientific disciplines that interact to make up the complex web of environmental science, soil chemistry could therefore be regarded as the most central. It is worth elaborating upon this concept, because any vague and fuzzy images the reader might have of possible applications of soil chemistry should then spring sharply into focus.
Figure 1.1 is an attempt to demonstrate the central role of soil chemistry, and its major interactions with other aspects of science. The outer ring of topics is impressive in its scope, but is by no means exhaustive. We could, for example, include terrestrial and aquatic zoology, since soils affect plants and water quality, and hence animal life. Plants may influence climate on a local scale and, in the long term, on a global scale, so we could add meteorology.

Having considered at some length in Chapters 2 and 3 the nature and origins of both the inorganic and organic components of soil, we are now in a position to consider how these components interact with water to regulate the chemical composition of the soil solution. These chemical and physicochemical interactions govern the chemical composition of the plant root environment, and hence short-term nutrient availability to plants. They also regulate drainage water chemistry, and are therefore clearly of great importance. It is appropriate to begin by looking more closely at the cation exchange behaviour of soils.
Cation-exchange properties of soil clays
The existence of cation-exchange properties of smectites and vermiculite has already been mentioned in Chapter 2. So far, however, we have only considered cation exchange from negatively charged sites arising as a consequence of isomorphous substitution by cations of similar size but with lower charge, occurring in interlayer spacings. Generally the cations in the interlayer spacings are only labile when the spacing is ca 1.4 nm or more. In addition to negative charge arising as a result of isomorphous substitution, it also occurs at the edges of crystals where valences would otherwise be incompletely satisfied. The individual clay particles in a moist soil will thus be surrounded by a layer of hydrated, positively charged cations. This, in turn, creates a localised zone of positive charge, which will attract anions from the soil solution, creating an electrical double layer.

What is soil fertility?
The term ‘soil fertility’ is difficult to define precisely. Generally it describes an overall soil condition which is the combined product of various natural processes and management options. A ‘fertile soil’ is one which is capable of producing a desired crop with favourable yield and quality characteristics. Large areas of the world still suffer from severe restrictions to agricultural productivity as a result of soil chemical, physical and/or biological limitations. The example of excessive salt build up has been mentioned previously (Chapter 4). It has been suggested that approximately 35% of the world's irrigated land suffers from suboptimal productivity (Carter, 1982).
For any production system to be sustainable, nutrient inputs and outputs must be balanced over a reasonable timescale. The nutritional requirements of individual plant species vary considerably and therefore the fertility of a soil varies for individual plant species (Brown & Jones, 1977). Removal of nutrient elements with the harvested crop is a major potential cause of decline in soil fertility, and losses should therefore be replenished. Typical values for the amounts of major nutrients removed by a range of crops are shown in Table 5.1. While in the present context chemical aspects of fertility are of prime concern, it is difficult to separate these from the closely linked physical and biological processes.
Natural levels of fertility are seldom adequate to sustain a reasonable long-term degree of agricultural productivity.
