Objective:
Processing speed declines with age and is a strong predictor of age-related cognitive decline in other domains, and in predicting who will need help with tasks of daily living in later years. Higher cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF) reflects better cardiopulmonary health and is related to maintenance of processing speed and cognition into late life. On the other hand, white matter lesions (WML) are reflective of age-related brain network disconnections from damage to white matter tracts in the brain. Lower CRF and higher WML burden have each been related to poorer cognitive performance. Although higher CRF provides a protective effect on cognition, the combined effects of CRF and WML on processing speed have yet to be determined. Specifically, whether CRF and WML independently affect processing speed or if WML moderates the effect of CRF on processing speed is yet to be established. We predicted WML may moderate CRF benefits on cognitive aging if CRF-related cognitive benefits are weakened by high WML load. Here, we test this question with the gold-standard measure of CRF, maximal exercise oxygen uptake (relative VO2 max, mL/kg/min) during a graded exercise test, and a validated neuropsychological measure of processing speed, the Digit Symbol Substitution Test (DSST).
Participants and Methods:CRF, DSST scores, and WML volumes of cognitively normal adults (n=91) aged 55-80 years were included in this analysis. The WML data was corrected for total intracranial volume and was log transformed. A linear regression model included the number of accurately completed items on the DSST as the dependent variable and age, sex, relative VO2 max, WML volumes and the interaction between relative VO2 max and WML volume as the predictor variables.
Results:Main effects of age, sex, VO2 max and WML volume on the DSST were observed. Greater age, higher WML volume, and lower relative VO2 max were associated with poorer performance on the DSST. In addition, females (n=55) performed better than males (n=36) on the DSST. No significant interaction was observed between VO2 max and WML volume on DSST scores.
Conclusions:Our results show that 1) WML and relative VO2 max independently contribute to processing speed performance in older adults as measured by the DSST, and 2) WML do not moderate the relation between VO2 max and the DSST. Strengths of this study include gold-standard measurement of CRF and WML volumes as predictors of performance on the DSST in older adults. Further research is warranted to understand how vascular aging and brain health indicators interactively or interdependently impact cognition in aging.
A reason-based explanation for moral dumbfounding

The moral dumbfounding phenomenon for harmless taboo violations is often cited as a critical piece of empirical evidence motivating anti-rationalist models of moral judgment and decision-making. Moral dumbfounding purportedly occurs when an individual remains obstinately and steadfastly committed to a moral judgment or decision even after admitting inability to provide reasons and arguments to support it (Haidt, 2001). Early empirical support for the moral dumbfounding phenomenon led some philosophers and psychologists to suggest that affective reactions and intuitions, in contrast with reasons or reasoning, are the predominant drivers of moral judgments and decisions. We investigate an alternative reason-based explanation for moral dumbfounding: that putatively harmless taboo violations are judged to be morally wrong because of the high perceived likelihood that the agents could have caused harm, even though they did not cause harm in actuality. Our results indicate that judgments about the likelihood of causing harm consistently and strongly predicted moral wrongness judgments. Critically, a manipulation drawing attention to harms that could have occurred (but did not actually occur) systematically increased the severity of moral wrongness judgments. Thus, many participants were sensitive to at least one reason — the likelihood of harm — in making their moral judgments about these kinds of taboo violations. We discuss the implications of these findings for rationalist and anti-rationalist models of moral judgment and decision-making.
Ethnic differences in physical and mental multimorbidity in working age adults with a history of depression and/or anxiety

Background
The current study used data from an ethnically diverse population from South London to examine ethnic differences in physical and mental multimorbidity among working age (18–64 years) adults in the context of depression and anxiety.
MethodThe study included 44 506 patients who had previously attended Improving Access to Psychological Therapies services in the London Borough of Lambeth. Multinomial logistic regression examined cross-sectional associations between ethnicity with physical and mental multimorbidity. Patterns of multimorbidity were identified using hierarchical cluster analysis.
ResultsWithin 44 056 working age adults with a history of depression or anxiety from South London there were notable ethnic differences in physical multimorbidity. Adults of Black Caribbean ethnicity were more likely to have physical multimorbidity [adjusted relative risk ratio (aRRR) = 1.25, 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.15–1.36] compared to adults of White ethnicity. Relative to adults of White ethnicity, adults of Asian ethnicity were more likely to have physical multimorbidity at higher thresholds only (e.g. 4 + conditions; aRRR = 1.53, 95% CI 1.17–2.00). Three physical (atopic, cardiometabolic, mixed) and three mental (alcohol/substance use, common/severe mental illnesses, personality disorder) multimorbidity clusters emerged. Ethnic minority groups with multimorbidity had a higher probability of belonging to the cardiometabolic cluster.
ConclusionIn an ethnically diverse population with a history of common mental health disorders, we found substantial between- and within-ethnicity variation in rates of physical, but not mental, multimorbidity. The findings emphasised the value of more granular definitions of ethnicity when examining the burden of physical and mental multimorbidity.

Summary
Introduction
Water is the foundation of all ecosystems, whether terrestrial or aquatic. In terrestrial ecosystems freshwater not only provides critical water supply for transpiration during plant photosynthesis and drinking water for animals, but also transports, redistributes and stores energy, nutrients and contaminants. In aquatic and snow ecosystems, water is the medium in which the ecosystem functions and so its state mediates all transactions in these systems. Ecosystems are not passive responders to water but through their structure and function can manage water and associated microclimate – forests, grasslands, organic terrain wetlands, and beaver ponds being just a few examples.
This chapter will examine the surface water budget in terms of the water continuity equation as a manifestation of the hydrological cycle. To solve the continuity equation for water, the chapter will review hydrological processes and how they interact with vegetation, animals, soils, geomorphology and climate in the context of the catchment. The coupling of the mass and energy continuity equations in controlling hydrological processes will be discussed. How hydrological processes and their ecosystem interactions are managed by humans will be introduced. Then the chapter will review calculation schemes for the surface water budget via one-dimensional land surface schemes and catchment-based hydrological models, noting the data requirements, uncertainty and limitations of these models and the balance required between model complexity and physical representation of hydrology. This will give the conceptual ideas and basic mathematics of conservation laws and transport processes that form the basis of many models in the forthcoming chapters.
Hydrological Processes as a Fundamental Component of Aquatic and Terrestrial Ecosystems
Hydrological Cycle
The hydrological cycle is the flow and storage of water, as liquid, solid or vapor, on and near the Earth's surface. This cycling is a fundamental function of the Earth system and, through its associated latent energy transformations and other influences on land surface characteristics, ensures the habitability of the planet. A representation of the global hydrological cycle is found in Figure 4.1 where it can be seen that there are substantial flows between ocean and land – evaporation and river discharge from land transfer water directly to the oceans or through precipitation and ocean water is evaporated and then forms precipitation over land.

The present study assessed the effects of mild dehydration on cognitive performance and mood of young males. A total of twenty-six men (age 20·0 (sd 0·3) years) participated in three randomised, single-blind, repeated-measures trials: exercise-induced dehydration plus a diuretic (DD; 40 mg furosemide); exercise-induced dehydration plus placebo containing no diuretic (DN); exercise while maintaining euhydration plus placebo (EU; control condition). Each trial included three 40 min treadmill walks at 5·6 km/h, 5 % grade in a 27·7°C environment. A comprehensive computerised six-task cognitive test battery, the profile of mood states questionnaire and the symptom questionnaire (headache, concentration and task difficulty) were administered during each trial. Paired t tests compared the DD and DN trials resulting in >1 % body mass loss (mean 1·59 (sd 0·42) %) with the volunteer's EU trial (0·01 (sd 0·03) %). Dehydration degraded specific aspects of cognitive performance: errors increased on visual vigilance (P = 0·048) and visual working memory response latency slowed (P = 0·021). Fatigue and tension/anxiety increased due to dehydration at rest (P = 0·040 and 0·029) and fatigue during exercise (P = 0·026). Plasma osmolality increased due to dehydration (P < 0·001) but resting gastrointestinal temperature was not altered (P = 0·238). In conclusion, mild dehydration without hyperthermia in men induced adverse changes in vigilance and working memory, and increased tension/anxiety and fatigue.

Summary
INTRODUCTION
The incidence of diabetes continues to grow at a staggering pace. The United States' Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimate that 23.6 million people or 7.8% of the U.S. Population has diabetes, with 1.6 million new cases being diagnosed each year. These figures are even more astonishing when one considers worldwide estimates. Close to 4 million deaths in the 20–79 year old age group may be attributed to diabetes in 2010, accounting for 6.8% of global all-cause mortality in this age group. The number of people with diabetes worldwide is expected to reach 366 million people by 2030, more than double the estimated 177 million people affected with the disease in 2000. The increased disease prevalence is accompanied by an increase in associated comorbidities. The literature estimates that patients with diabetes have nearly a 25% lifetime risk of developing a foot ulcer with more than 50% of these ulcers becoming infected and requiring hospitalization. In fact, at least 20% of all diabetes-related hospital admissions are due to diabetic foot ulcers. Associated with foot ulcers and infection is the incidence of amputation. It has been conservatively reported that, worldwide, a major amputation takes place every 30 seconds with over 2500 limbs lost per day. At least 60% of all non-traumatic lower extremity amputations are related to complications of diabetes. People with diabetes who have had one amputation have a 68% risk of having another in the next 5 years and have a 50% mortality rate in the 5 years following the initial amputation.

Zoonoses are those diseases of animals that can be transmitted to man or vice versa. These may be caused by bacteria, parasites, or more rarely by viruses. This paper will concentrate mainly on the zoonotic bacteria Salmonella spp., Campylobacter spp., E. coli O157 and Yersinia spp. Foodborne disease, often described as food poisoning, is defined as disease due to the consumption of food contaminated with microorganisms or their toxins. In 2000, the most common causes of food poisoning in humans in Great Britain were Campylobacter spp. (60340 cases) and Salmonella spp. (16567 cases). Less than 100 cases of Yersinia spp. infections were reported in humans in England and Wales. Results from surveillance of zoonotic organisms in farm livestock were presented at two conferences organised by MAFF in 2000. The main results are outlined in table 1. It is not possible to guarantee the complete absence from meat of bacteria that can cause infections in people. Thorough cooking of foods should kill all vegetative bacteria. Nevertheless, it is also important that steps are taken throughout the supply chain to minimise the transfer of the bacteria that could cause foodborne disease.
The Effect of Nitrogen Ion Implantation on the Abrasive Wear Resistance of the Ti-6Al-4V/UHMWPE Couple

Nitrogen ion implantation was investigated as a means of improving the wear resistance of Ti-6Al-4V alloy and the performance of the Ti-6Al-4V/ultra high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) wear couple. Included in the pin-on-disc wear study were cobalt-chromium and stainless steel controls as well as non-ion-implanted Ti-6Al-4V. Ion implanted Ti-6Al-4V and the control alloys exhibited minor scratching whereas non-ion-implanted Ti-6AI-4V exhibited definite wear scars. Gravimetric analysis of the UHMWPE discs revealed no significant difference between those worn against ion implanted Ti-6Al-4V and the control alloys. Discs worn against non-ionimplanted Ti-6Al-4V, however, exhibited significantly more weight loss than the other couples. The results of this testing indicate that nitrogen ion implantation improves the wear resistance of Ti-6Al-4V with an attendant decrease in the amount of polyethylene abrasive wear.
