South American Maize and Political Economy of the Middle and Late Formative Soconusco Region of Guatemala

We present macrobotanical, starch, and phytolith data from artifacts and sediments from Middle Formative La Blanca (1000–600 cal BC) and Late Formative El Ujuxte (600 cal BC–cal AD 115 ) in the Soconusco region in Guatemala. Potential economic plants identified included palm (cf. Arecaceae), two varieties of maize (Zea mays), guava (Psidium guajava), bean (Phaseolus), chili peppers (Capsicum), squash (Cucurbitaceae), custard apple (Annonaceae), coco plum (Chrysobalanaceae), lerén (Calathea), arrowroot (Maranta), and bird-of-paradise (Heliconia). The results suggest that control of food production and consumption was critical for the transition from complex chiefdoms during the Middle Formative to the archaic state in the Late Formative. The arrival of a more productive South American variety of maize at El Ujuxte (about 2549 BP) allowed elites to exploit an already existing broad-based economic system and to use the maize-based religious system to increase control over maize agricultural practices and maintain power through ideology and disciplinary power. These data suggest that the arrival of fully domesticated South American maize likely influenced the overall development of Mesoamerican state-level societies.

Background
Several hypotheses may explain the association between substance use, posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and depression. However, few studies have utilized a large multisite dataset to understand this complex relationship. Our study assessed the relationship between alcohol and cannabis use trajectories and PTSD and depression symptoms across 3 months in recently trauma-exposed civilians.
MethodsIn total, 1618 (1037 female) participants provided self-report data on past 30-day alcohol and cannabis use and PTSD and depression symptoms during their emergency department (baseline) visit. We reassessed participant's substance use and clinical symptoms 2, 8, and 12 weeks posttrauma. Latent class mixture modeling determined alcohol and cannabis use trajectories in the sample. Changes in PTSD and depression symptoms were assessed across alcohol and cannabis use trajectories via a mixed-model repeated-measures analysis of variance.
ResultsThree trajectory classes (low, high, increasing use) provided the best model fit for alcohol and cannabis use. The low alcohol use class exhibited lower PTSD symptoms at baseline than the high use class; the low cannabis use class exhibited lower PTSD and depression symptoms at baseline than the high and increasing use classes; these symptoms greatly increased at week 8 and declined at week 12. Participants who already use alcohol and cannabis exhibited greater PTSD and depression symptoms at baseline that increased at week 8 with a decrease in symptoms at week 12.
ConclusionsOur findings suggest that alcohol and cannabis use trajectories are associated with the intensity of posttrauma psychopathology. These findings could potentially inform the timing of therapeutic strategies.

The perinatal period is a vulnerable time for the development of psychopathology, particularly mood and anxiety disorders. In the study of maternal anxiety, important questions remain regarding the association between maternal anxiety symptoms and subsequent child outcomes. This study examined the association between depressive and anxiety symptoms, namely social anxiety, panic, and agoraphobia disorder symptoms during the perinatal period and maternal perception of child behavior, specifically different facets of development and temperament. Participants (N = 104) were recruited during pregnancy from a community sample. Participants completed clinician-administered and self-report measures of depressive and anxiety symptoms during the third trimester of pregnancy and at 16 months postpartum; child behavior and temperament outcomes were assessed at 16 months postpartum. Child development areas included gross and fine motor skills, language and problem-solving abilities, and personal/social skills. Child temperament domains included surgency, negative affectivity, and effortful control. Hierarchical multiple regression analyses demonstrated that elevated prenatal social anxiety symptoms significantly predicted more negative maternal report of child behavior across most measured domains. Elevated prenatal social anxiety and panic symptoms predicted more negative maternal report of child effortful control. Depressive and agoraphobia symptoms were not significant predictors of child outcomes. Elevated anxiety symptoms appear to have a distinct association with maternal report of child development and temperament. Considering the relative influence of anxiety symptoms, particularly social anxiety, on maternal report of child behavior and temperament can help to identify potential difficulties early on in mother–child interactions as well as inform interventions for women and their families.

Rigid ryegrass population VLR69 has become resistant to nine classes of herbicides after 21 yr of exposure to five herbicides in five different chemical classes. The population was exposed to diuron in 17 seasons and is resistant to diuron (4 fold) and chlorotoluron (8 fold) when compared with a reference susceptible population (VLR1). VLR69 had six seasons of exposure to chlorsulfuron and exhibits a high level of resistance to chlorsulfuron (> 20 fold) and triasulfuron (> 25 fold) and a lesser change in sensitivity to sulfometuron (7 fold); however, 4% of the population has a high level of resistance to sulfometuron. Resistance to atrazine (5 fold), simazine (6 fold), and ametryn (10 fold) was observed after five seasons of exposure to atrazine. There is a high level of resistance to all aryloxyphenoxypropionate herbicides after only two exposures to diclofop eight generations prior to testing the population. The population was cross-resistant to tralkoxydim (> 9.5 fold) and sethoxydim (1.8 fold). There was a small change in sensitivity to paraquat (1.4 fold) after three generations of exposure. The population displayed cross-resistance to: imazaquin (7 fold), imazapyr (2.5 fold), metribuzin (8.7 fold), and metolachlor (2 fold) but was susceptible to oxyfluorfen and dinitroaniline herbicides. There was also a small shift in sensitivity to tridiphane (1.6 fold).

Non-invasive genetic identification confirms the presence of the Endangered okapi Okapia johnstoni south-west of the Congo River

The okapi Okapia johnstoni, a rainforest giraffid endemic to the Democratic Republic of Congo, was recategorized as Endangered on the IUCN Red List in 2013. Historical records and anecdotal reports suggest that a disjunct population of okapi may have occurred south-west of the Congo River but the current distribution and status of the okapi in this region are not well known. Here we describe the use of non-invasive genetic identification for this species and assess the success of species identification from dung in the wild, which varied throughout the range. This variation is probably attributable to varying okapi population densities and/or different sample collection strategies across the okapi's distribution. Okapi were confirmed to occur south-west of the Congo River, in scattered localities west of the Lomami River. We demonstrated that non-invasive genetic methods can provide information on the distribution of cryptic, uncommon species that is difficult to obtain by other methods. Further investigation is required to genetically characterize the okapi across its range and to investigate the biogeographical processes that have led to the observed distribution of okapi and other fauna in the region.

The objective was to characterize the endoscopic appearance of the glossoepiglottic fold (GEF) in normal horses. Six clinically normal adult Quarter Horses between 5 and 7 years of age were used and ranged from 480 to 520 kg body weight. Prior to oropharyngeal endoscopic examination, all horses had demonstrated normal function of the upper respiratory tract during high-speed treadmill examination. The horses were cantered at between 6.5 and 8.0 m s− 1 on a high-speed treadmill until fatigued and unable to maintain position on the treadmill. All horses were able to canter for at least 5 min. Oropharyngeal endoscopy was performed under intravenous general anaesthesia. The ventral aspect of the epiglottis and the GEF were examined with the aid of a specially designed epiglottic elevator. The endoscopic appearance of the oropharynx was documented using digital image capture technology Karl Storz AIDA™ Vet compact data archiving system (Karl Storz Veterinary Endoscopy America Inc., Goleta, CA, USA). In all horses, the GEF attached to the most caudo ventral aspect of the base of the epiglottis. The mucosa of the GEF was consistently plicated in the transverse plane, and in no horse, was there plication in the sagittal plane only. The clinical relevance included malformations of the GEF, which have been implicated in the etiopathogenesis of dorsal displacement of the soft palate. The results of this study may facilitate the differentiation of normal oropharyngeal anatomy from malformations (frenula) that may contribute to upper airway dysfunction.
Patiriella pseudoexigua (Asteroidea: Asterinidae): a cryptic species complex revealed by molecular and embryological analyses

Cryptic lineages were identified within a morphologically uniform group of sea stars distributed from Australia to Japan. Among eight populations, all of which have been referred to Patiriella pseudoexigua, we found seven unique mitochondrial DNA sequences clustered into four distinct lineages. These four lineages formed a monophyletic group in which sister clades were separated by small genetic distances but could be differentiated from each other on the basis of reproductive differences. The four lineages thus appear to be separate but very closely related species. Examination of reproduction in several Queensland populations revealed that one population (Statue Bay) consisted of hermaphroditic intragonadal brooders with live-born offspring while other populations (Townsville, Bowen, Airlie Beach) consisted of dioecious free-spawners with a planktonic larva. The brooded larvae from central Queensland populations closely resembled brooded embryos and larvae of a Japanese lineage, while the planktonic larvae from northern Queensland were similar to the original description of planktonic larvae from a Taiwan population. However, each of the viviparous lineages was more closely related to a lineage with planktonic larval development than the viviparous lineages were to each other. Patiriella pseudoexigua thus comprises at least four species with different reproductive phenotypes in which viviparous brooding appears to have evolved in parallel. Based on previous taxonomic work we propose the following names for these four lineages: the dioecious free-spawner from northern Queensland (including the P. pseudoexigua type locality) is P. pseudoexiguasensu stricto; the viviparous brooder from central Queensland is undescribed and here referred to as Patiriella sp. nov; the dioecious free-spawner from Taiwan is temporarily referred to as Patiriella sp. (a senior name for this species may be P. pentagonus); and the hermaphrodite brooder from Japan should be raised to specific status and referred to by the new combination P. pacifica.
