Mental Health and Psychosocial Support in Response to Onset of the COVID-19 Pandemic: Findings from Action Against Hunger’s Emotional and Stress Management Intervention in Ivory Coast, Liberia, and Sierra Leone

Introduction
In 2020, as in the rest of the world, the COVID-19 pandemic spread in Africa and transformed people’s lives. Adding to the already existing burden of fragile health care systems, especially in low-resource settings, the pandemic response highlighted the need to address the health and well-being of populations in innovative ways. While research findings reported critical impacts on populations’ mental health, few studies assessed this progression within African countries. At the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, Action Against Hunger (ACF), developed and delivered a brief Emotional and Stress Management Intervention (ESMI) to reduce symptoms of emotional distress and increase perceived social support through problem solving techniques and relaxation exercises among adults and youth living in vulnerable communities experiencing a relatively high prevalence of COVID-19 in urban and rural areas in Sierra Leone, Liberia and Ivory Coast.
ObjectivesThe primary aim of this study is to evaluate whether individuals who received ESMI experienced changes in psychological distress and social support following the intervention and the association between change in psychological distress and change in social support for each country.
MethodsThis study consisted of secondary analysis of data collected via routine monitoring of activities by ACF for their ESMI programs implemented in community-based centers and health facilities from May to December 2020. Service delivery mechanisms were adapted to each context and setting (i.e., face to face vs. remote, health facilities vs. home visits, etc.). The main outcomes were psychological distress and social support measured with culturally relevant visual analogue scales. All analyses were performed separately for each country.
ResultsIn total, 1,412 adults and youth (11-17 years old) benefitted from the intervention across all countries and 1,350 were assessed at follow-up. As a result, changes for psychological support and social support with mean scores difference at baseline and follow up were significantly different in all countries. Correlations between changes in distress and changes in social support varied by country, and ranged from negative in Liberia, (r = -.88, p = 0.001), to positive in Ivory Coast (r = .55, p = 0.001), and null in Sierra Leone (r = -.07, p = 0.11). Across countries, the most commonly reported presenting problems were fear of infection, stigma, and socio-economic difficulties, with coping strategies differing by country.
ConclusionsAt the onset of a pandemic crisis, low-intensity psychosocial support activities hold potential for reducing psychological distress and improving social support among adults and youth from vulnerable communities in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Background: Exercise is commonly recommended to patients following a lumbar microdiscectomy although controversy remains as to the timing and protocols for exercise intervention (early vs late intervention). Our study aimed to evaluate low back pain level, fear avoidance, neurodynamic mobility, and function after early versus later exercise intervention following a unilateral lumbar microdiscectomy. Methods: Forty patients who underwent unilateral lumbar microdiscectomy were randomly allocated to early (Group-1) or later (Group-2) exercise intervention group. The low back pain and fear avoidance were evaluated using Oswestry Low Back Pain Disability Questionnaire, Numeric Pain Rating Scale, and Fear-Avoidance Beliefs Questionnaire. The neurodynamic mobility and function were recorded with Dualer Pro IQ Inclinometer, 50-foot walk test, and Patient-Specific Functional Scale. Measurements were performed before surgery and post-surgery (1-2, 4-6, and 8-10 weeks) after exercise intervention. Results: Both groups showed a significant decrease in low back pain levels and fear avoidance as well as a significant improvement in neurodynamic mobility and function at 4 and 8 weeks post-surgery. No significant difference was detected between the two groups. Conclusions: These findings showed that early exercise intervention after lumbar microdiscectomy is safe and may reduce the low back pain, decrease fear avoidance, and improve neurodynamic mobility and function.

Avec le vieillissement de la population, la maladie d’Alzheimer et les pathologies associées représentent un défi majeur de santé publique. Parallèlement, les nouvelles technologies de l’information et de la communication prennent une part de plus en plus importante dans notre vie quotidienne et peuvent être un support tant pour l’évaluation que pour une aide directe des usagers. Les serious games sont des applications informatiques, dont l’intention est de combiner, avec cohérence, à la fois des aspects sérieux (Serious) comme l’enseignement, l’apprentissage, la communication, la rééducation, avec des ressorts ludiques issus du jeu vidéo (Game). Dans le cadre du projet AZ@GAME [2] lauréat AAP e-santé no 1 des Investissements d’Avenir, des jeux sont en cours de développement avec pour objectif de stimuler les capacités cognitives et physiques du patient. Un des problèmes rencontrés concerne l’engagement des sujets à comprendre puis à pratiquer ces jeux. En effet, engagement et motivation diminuent quand le patient rencontre des problèmes d’utilisation. Nous présentons ici un système d’assistance automatisé basé sur la technologie Kinect. Trois groupes de patients (Plaintes mnésique : n = 10 ; âge moyen, 76,6 ; MCI : n = 10 âge moyen, 77,9 ; et maladie d’Alzheimer : n = 10 ; âge moyen, 79,9) ont participés à une séance d’entraînement utilisant un jeu pour stimuler l’attention concentration. Le jeu était proposé avec ou sans l’aide du système. Les résultats indiquent que tous les groupes ont eu de meilleures performances (score et temps de jeu) avec l’aide du système. Ce résultat est tout particulièrement important dans le groupe de patients Alzheimer (score > de 31 % et temps de réalisation < de 10 % avec le système). Compte tenu de ces résultats la prochaine étape aura pour objectif de proposer un système encore plus motivant à une population plus importante de patients.
Using resting-state intrinsic network connectivity to identify suicide risk in mood disorders

Background
Little is known about the neural substrates of suicide risk in mood disorders. Improving the identification of biomarkers of suicide risk, as indicated by a history of suicide-related behavior (SB), could lead to more targeted treatments to reduce risk.
MethodsParticipants were 18 young adults with a mood disorder with a history of SB (as indicated by endorsing a past suicide attempt), 60 with a mood disorder with a history of suicidal ideation (SI) but not SB, 52 with a mood disorder with no history of SI or SB (MD), and 82 healthy comparison participants (HC). Resting-state functional connectivity within and between intrinsic neural networks, including cognitive control network (CCN), salience and emotion network (SEN), and default mode network (DMN), was compared between groups.
ResultsSeveral fronto-parietal regions (k > 57, p < 0.005) were identified in which individuals with SB demonstrated distinct patterns of connectivity within (in the CCN) and across networks (CCN-SEN and CCN-DMN). Connectivity with some of these same regions also distinguished the SB group when participants were re-scanned after 1–4 months. Extracted data defined SB group membership with good accuracy, sensitivity, and specificity (79–88%).
ConclusionsThese results suggest that individuals with a history of SB in the context of mood disorders may show reliably distinct patterns of intrinsic network connectivity, even when compared to those with mood disorders without SB. Resting-state fMRI is a promising tool for identifying subtypes of patients with mood disorders who may be at risk for suicidal behavior.

The Vibrio cholerae O1 (VCO1) El Tor biotype appeared during the seventh cholera pandemic starting in 1961, and new variants of this biotype have been identified since the early 1990s. This pandemic has affected Vietnam, and a large outbreak was reported in southern Vietnam in 2010. Pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE) and multilocus variable-number tandem-repeat analyses (MLVA) were used to screen 34 VCO1 isolates from the southern Vietnam 2010 outbreak (23 patients, five contact persons, and six environmental isolates) to determine if it was genetically distinct from 18 isolates from outbreaks in southern Vietnam from 1999 to 2004, and two isolates from northern Vietnam (2008). Twenty-seven MLVA types and seven PFGE patterns were identified. Both analyses showed that the 2008 and 2010 isolates were distinctly clustered and separated from the 1999–2004 isolates.

Background:
Chronic rhinosinusitis is characterised by persistent inflammation of the sinonasal mucosa. Multiple pathophysiological mechanisms are likely to exist. Previous research has focused predominantly on T-helper type cytokines to highlight the inflammatory mechanisms. However, proteins such as nuclear factor kappa B and transforming growth factor beta are increasingly recognised to have important roles in sinonasal inflammation and tissue remodelling.
Objective:This review article explores the roles of T-helper type cytokines, nuclear factor kappa B and transforming growth factor beta in the pathophysiological mechanisms of chronic rhinosinusitis. An understanding of these mechanisms will allow for better identification and classification of chronic rhinosinusitis endotypes, and, ultimately, improved therapeutic strategies.

A 54-year-old female presented with a two year history of progressive headaches and upper neck pain. The headaches were worse with coughing and bending. Neurological examination was unremarkable including a normal cranial nerve examination. There was no papilloedema. A computed tomogram (CT) demonstrated a midline, posterior fossa, partly fatty, partly solid mass (Figure 1). Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) demonstrated a mixed fatty, solid mass arising from the fourth ventricle and extending downward below the foramen magnum to the C1 level (Figure 2). The solid portions demonstrated enhancement. In addition, in the lateral right cerebellar hemisphere, there was a second, separate, solid, enhancing mass without any connection to the larger central lesion. A subtotal resection of the tumor was achieved through a suboccipital craniectomy.
Corporate Governance and Risk Taking in Pension Plans: Evidence from Defined Benefit Asset Allocations

Based on theoretical advice and empirical evidence suggesting that risk taking in asset allocation enhances pension returns, we evaluate empirically whether good corporate governance leads to a larger allocation of pension assets to risky securities as compared to safe investments. Our findings suggest that firms with good external and internal corporate governance take more risk by investing heavily in equities and allocating a smaller share of the plan assets to cash, government debt, and insurance company accounts. The main underlying mechanisms appear to be higher investment returns and better pension funding status associated with higher equity and lower safe asset allocations.

Non-typhoidal Salmonella are an important but poorly characterized cause of paediatric diarrhoea in developing countries. We conducted a hospital-based case-control study in children aged <5 years in Ho Chi Minh City to define the epidemiology and examine risk factors associated with Salmonella diarrhoeal infections. From 1419 diarrhoea cases and 571 controls enrolled between 2009 and 2010, 77 (5·4%) diarrhoea cases were stool culture-positive for non-typhoidal Salmonella. Salmonella patients were more likely to be younger than controls (median age 10 and 12 months, respectively) [odds ratio (OR) 0·97; 95% confidence interval (CI) 0·94–0·99], to report a recent diarrhoeal contact (8·1% cases, 1·8% controls; OR 5·98, 95% CI 1·8–20·4) and to live in a household with >2 children (cases 20·8%, controls 10·2%; OR 2·32, 95% CI 1·2–4·7). Our findings indicate that Salmonella are an important cause of paediatric gastroenteritis in this setting and we suggest that transmission may occur through direct human contact in the home.

Un nouvel outil a été développé pour optimiser l’efficacité des traitements par le DTPA après blessure, sur la base d’une réduction de la dose efficace engagée. Les simulations montrent, notamment, que pour du 239Pu modérément soluble (type M), des traitements précoces (24 i.v.) étalées sur 4 mois permettent une réduction d’un tiers de la dose, alors que leur prolongement sur 5 ans, avec un intervalle de 2 semaines, peut diminuer la dose d’un facteur 5. En revanche, pour des composés peu solubles (type S), l’efficacité des traitements précoces est négligeable et un gain dosimétrique d’un facteur 3 n’est atteint que pour des traitements effectués 2 fois par mois durant 50 ans. Certaines des hypothèses retenues pour la modélisation ont été validées par les résultats d’expérimentations animales récemment publiés. Enfin, la structure d’un nouveau modèle applicable à la fois au Pu et à l’Am est rapportée, structure tenant compte de la décorporation urinaire et fécale de ces actinides et qui pourrait être adapté à différentes posologies et formes galéniques de DTPA.

The Very Large Telescope (VLT) Observatory on Cerro Paranal (2635 m) in Northern Chile is approaching completion. After the four 8-m Unit Telescopes (UT) individually saw first light in the last years, two of them were combined for the first time on October 30, 2001 to form a stellar interferometer, the VLT Interferometer. The remaining two UTs will be integrated into the interferometric array later this year, so that any two UTs can be used for interferometry. In this article, we will describe the subsystems of the VLTI and the planning for the following years.

Colloidal semiconductor quantum dots (QDs) are luminescent nanoparticles with size- dependent emission spectra spanning a wide range of wavelengths in the visible and near IR. This property, as well as their higher resistance to photo-degradation compared to organic dye labels, makes QDs potentially suitable for certain biomolecule tagging and multiplexing applications. We describe an electrostatic self-assembly approach for conjugating highly luminescent colloidal CdSe-ZnS core-shell QDs with engineered two-domain recombinant proteins to form conjugates for sensing and imaging applications. The design, preparation, and characterization of high quantum yield IgG antibody-binding protein G bioconjugates using luminescence, electrophoretic gel shift, and affinity assays is reported.

Bioactive materials such as calcium phosphate ceramics and bioactive glasses enhance bone tissue formation and then bond to bone tissue. In our work, we question what particular surface feature or features of bioactive materials are responsible for the bone tissue response. In this study we have uncoupled surface charge from surface chemistry, energy, and topography and have examined osteoblast adhesion to titanium surfaces of varying surface charge. We have shown that a negative surface charge promotes osteoblast adhesion by approximately 60% over a neutral surface and that conversely, a positive surface charge inhibits osteoblast adhesion by about 20%. Continued examination of surface characteristics that control cellular responses are warranted with the eventual goal of applying those desirable surface characteristics to any structural biomaterial for bone implant or tissue engineering applications.
