Understanding the distribution and extent of suitable habitats is critical for the conservation of endangered and endemic taxa. Such knowledge is limited for many Central African species, including the rare and globally threatened Grey-necked Picathartes Picathartes oreas, one of only two species in the family Picathartidae endemic to the forests of Central Africa. Despite growing concerns about land-use change resulting in fragmentation and loss of forest cover in the region, neither the extent of suitable habitat nor the potential species’ distribution is well known. We combine 339 (new and historical) occurrence records of Grey-necked Picathartes with environmental variables to model the potential global distribution. We used a Maximum Entropy modelling approach that accounted for sampling bias. Our model suggests that Grey-necked Picathartes distribution is strongly associated with steeper slopes and high levels of forest cover, while bioclimatic, vegetation health, and habitat condition variables were all excluded from the final model. We predicted 17,327 km2 of suitable habitat for the species, of which only 2,490 km2 (14.4%) are within protected areas where conservation designations are strictly enforced. These findings show a smaller global distribution of predicted suitable habitat forthe Grey-necked Picathartes than previously thought. This work provides evidence to inform a revision of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List status, and may warrant upgrading the status of the species from “Near Threatened” to “Vulnerable”.

Objective:
To develop and evaluate a program to presvent hospital-acquired pneumonia (HAP).
Design:Prospective, observational, surveillance program to identify HAP before and after 7 interventions. An order set automatically triggered in programmatically identified high-risk patients.
Setting:All 21 hospitals of an integrated healthcare system with 4.4 million members.
Patients:All hospitalized patients.
Interventions:Interventions for high-risk patients included mobilization, upright feeding, swallowing evaluation, sedation restrictions, elevated head of bed, oral care and tube care.
Results:HAP rates decreased between 2012 and 2018: from 5.92 to 1.79 per 1,000 admissions (P = .0031) and from 24.57 to 6.49 per 100,000 members (P = .0014). HAP mortality decreased from 1.05 to 0.34 per 1,000 admissions and from 4.37 to 1.24 per 100,000 members. Concomitant antibiotic utilization demonstrated reductions of broad-spectrum antibiotics. Antibiotic therapy per 100,000 members was measured as follows: carbapenem days (694 to 463; P = .0020), aminoglycoside days (154 to 61; P = .0165), vancomycin days (2,087 to 1,783; P = .002), and quinolone days (2,162 to 1,287; P < .0001). Only cephalosporin use increased, driven by ceftriaxone days (264 to 460; P = .0009). Benzodiazepine use decreased between 2014 to 2016: 10.4% to 8.8% of inpatient days. Mortality for patients with HAP was 18% in 2012% and 19% in 2016 (P = .439).
Conclusion:HAP rates, mortality, and broad-spectrum antibiotic use were all reduced significantly following these interventions, despite the absence of strong supportive literature for guidance. Most interventions augmented basic nursing care. None had risks of adverse consequences. These results support the need to examine practices to improve care despite limited literature and the need to further study these difficult areas of care.

The mRNAs accumulated in oocytes provide support for embryo development until embryo genomic activation. We hypothesized that the maternal mRNA stock present in bovine oocytes is associated with embryo development until the blastocyst stage. To test our hypothesis, we analyzed the transcriptome of the oocyte and correlated the results with the embryo development. Our goal was to identify genes expressed in the oocyte that correlate with its ability to develop to the blastocyst stage. A fraction of oocyte cytoplasm was biopsied using micro-aspiration and stored for further expression analysis. Oocytes were activated chemically, cultured individually and classified according to their capacity to develop in vitro to the blastocyst stage. Microarray analysis was performed on mRNA extracted from the oocyte cytoplasm fractions and correlated with its ability to develop to the blastocyst stage (good quality oocyte) or arrest at the 8–16-cell stage (bad quality oocyte). The expression of 4320 annotated genes was detected in the fractions of cytoplasm that had been collected from oocytes matured in vitro. Gene ontology classification revealed that enriched gene expression of genes was associated with certain biological processes: ‘RNA processing’, ‘translation’ and ‘mRNA metabolic process’. Genes that are important to the molecular functions of ‘RNA binding’ and ‘translation factor activity, RNA binding’ were also enriched in oocytes. We identified 29 genes with differential expression between the two groups of oocytes compared (good versus bad quality). The content of mRNAs expressed in metaphase II oocytes influences the activation of the embryonic genome and enables further develop to the blastocyst stage.

Photoreflectance (PR) modulation spectroscopy was performed to investigate surface properties of GaN films grown on sapphire substrates. From the period of the Franz-Keldysh oscillations, the surface electric field across the GaN space charge region was found to be (197 ± 11) kV/cm, which corresponds to a surface state density of 1.0×1012 cm−2. A surface barrier height of 0.71 eV was determined by fitting the dependence of the PR intensities on pump beam power density. We suggest that a deep level is formed at 2.68 eV above the GaN valence band edge due to the large density of surface states.

Waveguide prism-coupling methods were used to measure the ordinary and extraordinary refractive indices of AlxGa1-xN films grown on sapphire substrates by HVPE and MOCVD. Several discrete wavelengths ranging from 442 nm to 1064 nm were used and the results were fit to one-term Sellmeier equations. The maximum standard uncertainty in the refractive index measurements was ± 0.005 and the maximum standard uncertainty in the self-consistent calculation for film thickness was ± 15 nm. Analysis of normal-incidence spectroscopic transmittance and reflectance measurements, correlated with the prism-coupling results, was used to determine the ordinary refractive index as a continuous function of wavelength from the band gap wavelength of each sample (between 252 nm and 364 nm) to 2500 nm. The Al compositions of the samples were determined using energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy analysis (EDS). HVPE grown samples had compositions x = 0.279, 0.363, 0.593, and 0.657. MOCVD samples had x = 0.00, 0.419, 0.507, 0.618, 0.660, and 0.666. The maximum standard uncertainty in the absolute EDS-determined value for x was ± 0.02.

Low electron energy cathodoluminescence (LEECL) was used to examine polishing-induced damage in a bulk high-pressure grown GaN single-crystal platelet. The Ga-polarity face of the platelet was mechanically polished; chemically-assisted ion-beam etching (CAIBE) to a depth of 200 nm was performed on a portion of this face. Low-temperature (15 K) CL spectra of the polished-only and polished+CAIBE regions of the Ga-face were taken at 2.8 kV, 5.4 kV, and 10.6 kV (corresponding to average electron penetration depths of 19 nm, 56 nm, and 170 nm). The low-temperature CL spectrum of the unpolished, N-polarity face was taken at 10.6 kV. In the near-band-edge region, all the CL spectra from the Ga-polarity face show a narrow peak near 3.47 eV, ascribed to donor-bound exciton recombination, and several overlapping peaks at lower energy (3.1 eV to 3.4 eV), ascribed to defect-related levels or to donor-acceptor pair recombination. Functional curve-fitting analysis enabled deconvolution of the spectra into the sum of an asymmetric peak (the donor-bound exciton) and several symmetric Gaussian peaks (the lower energy, defect-related or donor-acceptor peaks). The linewidth of the donor-bound exciton peak decreased with increasing penetration depth, and also decreased on going from the polished-only to the polished+CAIBE region. The relative intensity of a defect-related peak at ≈3.325 eV showed a similar decreasing trend with increasing penetration depth or with CAIBE treatment. The LEECL results suggest that the thickness of the polishing damage layer is approximately 400 nm; the 200 nm CAIBE step is thus insufficient to completely remove the damage.

Aluminum gallium nitride (AlxGa1−xN) films, grown by metalorganic chemical vapor deposition on sapphire, were characterized by low-temperature cathodoluminescence (CL) and photoluminescence (PL), and room-temperature optical absorbance. The aluminum fractions are estimated to range from x = 0 to x = 0.444. Most films were silicon-doped. The absorption spectra have a Urbach (exponential) form below the bandgap. The width of the Urbach edge, EU, increases with Al fraction, x, as EU = (0.045 +1 0.104x) eV. The luminescence (CL or PL) spectra show a relatively narrow band-edge peak and a broad deep-level peak. The full-widths at half-maximum of the band-edge CL peaks (measured at T = 15 K) are remarkably similar to the Urbach absorption widths, EU (measured at T = 300 K). PL spectra were obtained from the top surfaces and the film-substrate interfaces of several films. The interface PL spectra of some films show an extra peak 0.15 eV to 0.45 eV below the bandgap, which is ascribed to structural defects or impurity phases localized near the interface. The energy of the band-edge luminescence peak shifts with excitation mode (CL, top-surface PL, or interface PL). This effect is attributed to the variation of the excitation depth, between the top surface and film-substrate interface, with excitation mode, together with the depth variation of film properties such as residual stress or aluminum fraction.

A controlled study of community care in serious mental illness (SMI) was carried out. Patients with SMI were randomised to have hospital care or be looked after by a community psychiatric care team in a Daily Living Programme (DIP). The day-to-day work of a clinical team with the difficulties encountered in delivering community psychiatric care in an inner city is described. There were seven deaths from self-harm during the 45-month study. One DIP patient committed homicide. An ordeal by media following this and the suicides are described. Lessons learnt include the need for the community care team to be responsible for discharge from any in-patient phases and for attention to team morale, especially during adversity, and to time spent working under pressure.

The need continues for new powerful but insensitive explosive ingredients, which match the performance of RDX with the insensitivity of TATB. One approach has been to take the inherent stability of an aromatic heterocycle, combine this with the explosive insensitivity and thermal stability associated with alternating amino and nitro groups, and to supplement the performance of the molecule with an energy contribution from the N-oxide functionality. The synthesis, characterization and properties (both sensitivity and performance) of aminonitropyridine-l-oxides and aminonitropyrimidine-1,3-dioxides will be described.

Cathodoluminescence (CL) spectroscopy in a scanning electron microscope was used to identify and to map the spatial distribution of luminescent defects in a synthetic diamond single crystal. Several defect CL bands were observed in the 1.5-3.5 eV region: (i) a band with a zero-phonon line at 2.156 eV, attributed to a center containing nitrogen and atomic vacancies; (ii) a broadband centered at ∼2.2 eV, tentatively attributed to a boron-containing center; (iii) a doublet line at 2.33 eV, attributed to a nitrogen-containing center; (iv) a zero-phonon line at 2.555 eV, attributed to a nickel-containing center; (v) a broadband centered at ∼2.85 eV, attributed to a dislocation-related center; and (vi) a zero-phonon line at 3.188 eV, attributed to a center containing nitrogen and a carbon interstitial. Lines due to free and acceptor-bound excitons were observed in the 5.0-5.4 eV region. The spatial variation of the CL was examined in the vicinity of regions of relatively high dislocation density (∼106 dislocations cm−2), which had been found in a previous x-ray diffraction imaging experiment. A quantitative analysis was made of the spatial variation of the band intensities. Upon moving from a relatively defect-free region to the center of a high dislocation density region, the intensities of defect bands (i) and (v) increased by very large factors (these bands were observed only within the high dislocation density regions); the intensity of defect band (vi) increased by a factor of ∼2; the acceptor-bound exciton intensity increased by a factor of 1.3; the intensities of defect bands (ii)-(iv) decreased by a factor of ∼2; and the free exciton intensity decreased by a factor of ∼7.5.

Raman spectroscopy was used to examine the structure of polycrystalline and epitaxial barium titanium oxide thin films grown by metal-organic chemical vapor deposition. The Raman spectra confirmed the presence of the tetragonal ferroelectric phase of BaTiO3 and also revealed several other Ba-Ti-O phases. These films were also characterized by X-ray diffraction and TEM imaging. The structural information provided by the Raman spectra was qualitatively consistent with the X-ray and TEM results. The temperature dependencies of the Raman spectra of two films were examined in the range 25°C-175°C. Raman peaks due to tetragonal BaTiO3 were observed at temperatures well above 132°C, which is the tetragonal-cubic phase transition temperature for bulk single-crystal BaTiO3. This may indicate stabilization of the tetragonal phase by an anisotropic film-substrate interaction or by inter-grain stresses.
