The collisions in a dilute polydisperse suspension of sub-Kolmogorov spheres with negligible inertia settling in a turbulent flow and interacting through hydrodynamics including continuum breakdown on close approach are studied. A statistically significant decrease in ideal collision rate without gravity is resolved via a Lagrangian stochastic velocity-gradient model at Taylor microscale Reynolds number larger than those accessible by current direct numerical simulation capabilities. This arises from the difference between the mean inward velocity and the root-mean-square particle relative velocity. Differential sedimentation, comparable to the turbulent shear relative velocity, but minimally influencing the sampling of the velocity gradient, diminishes the Reynolds number dependence and enhances the ideal collision rate i.e. the rate without interactions. The collision rate is retarded by hydrodynamic interactions between sphere pairs and is governed by non-continuum lubrication as well as full continuum hydrodynamic interactions at larger separations. The collision efficiency (ratio of actual to ideal collision rate) depends on the relative strength of differential sedimentation and turbulent shear, the size ratio of the interacting spheres and the Knudsen number (defined as the ratio of the mean-free path of the gas to the mean radius of the interacting spheres). We develop an analytical approximation to concisely report computed results across the parameter space. This accurate closed form expression could be a critical component in computing the evolution of the size distribution in applications such as water droplets in clouds or commercially valuable products in industrial aggregators.

Collisions in a dilute polydisperse suspension of spheres of negligible inertia interacting through non-continuum hydrodynamics and settling in a slow uniaxial compressional flow are studied. The ideal collision rate is evaluated as a function of the relative strength of gravity and uniaxial compressional flow and it deviates significantly from a linear superposition of these driving terms. This non-trivial behaviour is exacerbated by interparticle interactions based on uniformly valid non-continuum hydrodynamics, that capture non-continuum lubrication at small separations and full continuum hydrodynamic interactions at larger separations, retarding collisions driven purely by sedimentation significantly more than those driven purely by the linear flow. While the ideal collision rate is weakly dependent on the orientation of gravity with the axis of compression, the rate including hydrodynamic interactions varies by more than $100\,\%$ with orientation. This dramatic shift can be attributed to complex trajectories driven by interparticle interactions that prevent particle pairs from colliding or enable a circuitous path to collision. These and other important features of the collision process are studied in detail using trajectory analysis at near unity and significantly smaller than unity size ratios of the interacting spheres. For each case analysis is carried for a large range of relative strengths and orientations of gravity to the uniaxial compressional flow, and Knudsen numbers (ratio of mean free path of the media to mean radius).

Experiments were conducted from 1989 to 1991 on two silt loam and two clay soils to determine the effect of herbicides applied to the previous crop on growth and yield of rice. All herbicides were applied preplant-incorporated at recommended rates adjusted as needed for soil texture. Rice was planted the following year. Imazaquin, imazethapyr, alachlor, metolachlor, clomazone, trifluralin, and atrazine did not injure rice the year following application. Norflurazon was the only herbicide to injure rice on silt loam soils, with injury at one silt loam location in one of two years. Norflurazon and fluometuron residues caused rice injury on clay soils, and chlorimuron residues caused injury in one year on a day soil. This chlorimuron carryover injury was from August-planted soybean but did not occur from June-planted soybean. Norflurazon, fluometuron, and chlorimuron temporarily reduced rice dry matter early in the season. No herbicide reduced either rough rice or percent head rice yield on any of the soils.

Supernova 2012A was discovered on 7.39UT, January, 2012 in the nearby galaxy NGC 3239 at an unfiltered magnitude of 14.6 and classified spectroscopically as a Type IIP event. Here, we present the optical photometric and spectroscopic follow-up of the event during 14d to 130d post explosion.

1. Complex hybrids were produced having twenty-nine chromosomes, consisting of one telocentric and twenty complete chromosomes of T. aestivum (2n = 6x = 42), seven complete chromosomes of Ae. speltoides (2n = 2x = 14) and one telocentric chromosome derived from A. elongatum (2n = 10x = 70). The presence of the Ae. speltoides genome permitted pairing between homoeologous chromosomes at meiosis and the behaviour of the two telocentric chromosomes was observed.
2. The A. elongatum chromosome was seen to pair with chromosomes homoeologous to those of group 6. There was no evidence that it paired with chromosomes of any other group.
3. When the A. elongatum telocentric and those of 6A and 6D occurred in the same configuration it was evident that the telocentrics 6A and 6D were for corresponding chromosome arms, and the A. elongatum telocentric for the opposite arm.
4. The average rate of pairing was much lower for the A. elongatum telocentric than for wheat telocentrics. Previous studies had indicated very good genetic compensation of the A. elongatum chromosome for chromosomes 6A and 6D. It was therefore indicated that genetic equivalence and pairing affinity were not closely related in this case. Some implications of this are discussed.

1. Triticum aestivum ssp. vulgare variety Chinese Spring (2n = 6x = 42) is susceptible to yellow rust caused by Puccinia striiformis while the wild annual grass Aegilops comosa (2n = 14) is resistant to all the physiologic races for which it has been tested.
2. By a backcrossing programme initiated from Chinese Spring × Ae. comosa hybrids, using Chinese Spring as the recurrent parent, a line was isolated with a single chromosome of Ae. comosa, determining rust resistance, added to the full complement of Chinese Spring.
3. The alien chromosome substituted with good genetic compensation only for the chromosomes of homoeologous group 2 of Chinese Spring. This demonstrated that the chromosome determining rust resistance is in homoeologous group 2. It was designated 2M since Ae. comosa has the M genome.
4. In order to induce recombination between 2M and its wheat homoeologues, hybrids were made using Ae. speltoides which has the capacity to suppress the activity of chromosome 5B that normally prevents homoeologous synapsis. A backcrossing programme, using Chinese Spring as the recurrent parent, was reinitiated from the 29-chromosome hybrids carrying chromosome 2M and the haploid complements of Chinese Spring and Ae. speltoides.
5. Selection was practised for rust resistance and ultimately a resistant plant with 42 chromosomes, that formed 21 bivalents at meiosis, was isolated. This plant was heterozygous for a dominant rust resistance allele (Yr8) derived from Ae. comosa. Homozygotes were isolated in its progeny and in this way the rust resistant breeder's variety, Compair, was established.
6. Compair differs from Chinese Spring in its yellow rust resistance which was shown to be determined by a chromosome corresponding to 2D of Chinese Spring. This chromosome of Compair has the short arm, the centromere and a proximal segment of the long arm of chromosome 2M and a distal segment of the right arm of chromosome 2D. The modified chromosome, which is designated 2M/D, arose by homoeologous recombination in the Ae. speltoides hybrid or in the immediately succeeding backcross generations. Chromosome 2M/D carries the Yr8 gene in the proximal segment of the long arm derived from chromosome 2M.
7. In hybrids between Compair and standard wheat varieties, chromosome 2M/D pairs regularly with chromosome 2D so that regular segregation of Yr8 can be expected and Compair treated like any other parental variety in wheat hybridization programmes.
8. This work illustrates the way that homoeologous recombination can be induced and exploited both in cytogenetic analysis in wheat and in practical breeding work. The nature of the meiotic synapsis of chromosome 2M/D with its partial homologues raises questions concerning the means by which chromosome 5B influences the specificity of meiotic synapsis.

The objective was to evaluate the efficacy of a single dose of danofloxacin (6 mg/kg bodyweight) given by the intravenous route for the treatment of acute bovine mastitis induced by intra-cisternal infusion of an Escherichia coli strain (26 cfu into one rear quarter of each cow). Twenty-three Prim'Holstein lactating cows were inoculated. To be challenged, the mammary glands had to be productive, free of pathogenic bacteria, and with somatic cell counts (SCC) of <200 000 cells/ml. The cows were treated on an individual basis when predetermined criteria involving both systemic and local clinical signs were satisfied. Allocation to treatment, danofloxacin or negative saline control, was performed according to a randomized treatment allocation plan. Monitoring during a 21-d period after inoculation included individual clinical examination, bacteriological examination and determination of SCC. Esch. coli was isolated from the milk of all inoculated quarters at the first milking post-inoculation and, together with reference to the clinical scores; the challenge was considered to be successful in 20 of the 23 cows. On study day 7 bacteriological cure rates with danofloxacin and saline control were 89% (8/9) and 44% (4/9) respectively. On days 14 and 21 all milk samples that could be collected were negative for Esch. coli in both groups of animals. Beneficial statistically significant differences were found at the end of the observation period (days 19–21 post treatment) between cows treated with danofloxacin and saline for SCC (P=0·0091) and earlier in the study for milk production (P=0·0003) and udder inflammation (P=0·004). Obvious beneficial trends were recorded in the danofloxacin group for rectal temperature, milk quality, general behaviour and appetite. Danofloxacin-treated cows showed statistically significant lower local clinical scores and a more rapid return to pre-inoculation values. It was concluded that systemically administered danofloxacin is effective in terms of bacteriological results, milk production and both systemic and local signs when used in the treatment of induced acute Esch. coli mastitis. Danofloxacin hastens recovery and return to productivity compared with potential self cure.
Elastodynamic Characterization of Imprinted Nanolines

The advancement of imprint lithography as a method for fabricating nanostructures is impeded by a lack of effective tools for characterizing mechanical properties and geometry at the nanoscale. In this report, we describe the development of methods for determining elastic moduli and cross sectional dimensions of imprinted nanolines from Brillouin light scattering (BLS) measurements using finite-element (FE) and Farnell-Adler models for the vibrational modes. An array of parallel nanoimprinted lines of polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) with widths of ∼65 nm and heights of ∼140 nm served as a model specimen. Several acoustic modes were observed with BLS in the low-gigahertz frequency range, and the forms of the vibrational displacements were identified through correlation with calculations using measured bulk-PMMA moduli and density as input. The acoustic modes include several flexural, Rayleigh-like, and Sezawa-like modes. Fitting of Farnell-Adler calculations to the measured dispersion curves was explored as a means of extracting elastic moduli and nanoline dimensions from the data. Some values obtained from this inversion analysis were unrealistic, which suggests that geometric approximations in the model introduce significant systematic errors. In forward calculations, the frequencies determined with the FE method are found to more closely match measured frequencies. This suggests that the FE approach may be more accurate for inversion analysis. Initial estimates of uncertainties in the FE calculations support this conclusion.
X-Ray Studies of Near-Frictionless Carbon Films.

Carbon-based coatings exhibit many attractive properties that make them good candidates for a wide range of engineering applications. Tribological studies of the films have revealed a close correlation between the chemistry of the hydrocarbon source gases and the coefficients of friction and wear rates of the diamond-like carbon films. Those films grown in source gases with higher hydrogen-to-carbon ratios had much lower coefficients of friction and wear rates than did films derived from source gases with lower hydrogen-to-carbon ratios. The mechanism for this low friction is as yet not properly understood. Ongoing structural characterization of the films at Argonne National Laboratory is gradually revealing this mechanism. Recent studies have included x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), near edge x-ray absorption fine structure (NEXAFS) and x-ray reflectivity (XRR). XPS showed ∼10% oxygen at the surface, which was largely removed after a 1 minute sputter; NEXAFS showed a high sp2:sp3 ratio implying a highly graphitic material; and XRR has given a comprehensive depth profile, with three layers of increasing density as the substrate was approached. The paper discusses the results and correlation with previous friction measurements.

Suppose μ and ν are Borel measures on locally compact spaces X and Y, respectively. A product measure λ can be defined on the Borel sets of X x Y by the formula λ(M) = ∫ν(Mx) dμ, provided that vertical cross section measure ν(Mx) is a measurable function in x. Conditions are summarized for ν(Mx) to be measurable as a function in x, and examples are given in which the function ν(Mx) is not measurable. It is shown that a dense, countably compact set fails to be a Borel set if it contains no nonempty zero set.
