Reliable anti-collision control algorithms conforming with the rules regulating traffic at sea, the International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea (COLREG), are essential for the deployment of autonomous vessels in waters shared with other ships. The development of such methods is an active field of research. However, little attention has been given to how these rules are interpreted by experienced mariners, and how such information can be parametrised for use in automatic control systems and autonomous ships. This paper presents a method for exploiting historical automatic identification system (AIS) data to characterise parameters indicating the prevalent practices at sea in encounters with high collision risk. The method has been tested on data gathered in areas off the Norwegian coast over several years. Statistics on relevant parameters from the resulting dataset and the relation between them is presented. The results indicate that the strongest influence on vessel behaviour is the type of situation, and the amount of land and grounding hazards in the vessel's proximity.
The development and efficacy of a paediatric cardiology fellowship online preparatory course

Background:
The transition from residency to paediatric cardiology fellowship is challenging due to the new knowledge and technical skills required. Online learning can be an effective didactic modality that can be widely accessed by trainees. We sought to evaluate the effectiveness of a paediatric cardiology Fellowship Online Preparatory Course prior to the start of fellowship.
Methods:The Online Preparatory Course contained 18 online learning modules covering basic concepts in anatomy, auscultation, echocardiography, catheterisation, cardiovascular intensive care, electrophysiology, pulmonary hypertension, heart failure, and cardiac surgery. Each online learning module included an instructional video with pre-and post-video tests. Participants completed pre- and post-Online Preparatory Course knowledge-based exams and surveys. Pre- and post-Online Preparatory Course survey and knowledge-based examination results were compared via Wilcoxon sign and paired t-tests.
Results:151 incoming paediatric cardiology fellows from programmes across the USA participated in the 3 months prior to starting fellowship training between 2017 and 2019. There was significant improvement between pre- and post-video test scores for all 18 online learning modules. There was also significant improvement between pre- and post-Online Preparatory Course exam scores (PRE 43.6 ± 11% versus POST 60.3 ± 10%, p < 0.001). Comparing pre- and post-Online Preparatory Course surveys, there was a statistically significant improvement in the participants’ comfort level in 35 of 36 (97%) assessment areas. Nearly all participants (98%) agreed or strongly agreed that the Online Preparatory Course was a valuable learning experience and helped alleviate some anxieties (77% agreed or strongly agreed) related to starting fellowship.
Conclusion:An Online Preparatory Course prior to starting fellowship can provide a foundation of knowledge, decrease anxiety, and serve as an effective educational springboard for paediatric cardiology fellows.
Soil steaming to disinfect barnyardgrass-infested soil masses

Reusing soil can reduce environmental impacts associated with obtaining natural fresh soil during road construction and analogous activities. However, the movement and reuse of soils can spread numerous plant diseases and pests, including propagules of weeds and invasive alien plant species. To avoid the spread of barnyardgrass in reused soil, its seeds must be killed before that soil is spread to new areas. We investigated the possibility of thermal control of barnyardgrass seeds using a prototype of a stationary soil steaming device. One Polish and four Norwegian seed populations were examined for thermal sensitivity. To mimic a natural range in seed moisture content, dried seeds were moistened for 0, 12, 24, or 48 h before steaming. To find effective soil temperatures and whether exposure duration is important, we tested target soil temperatures in the range 60 to 99 C at an exposure duration of 90 s (Experiment 1) and exposure durations of 30, 90, or 180 s with a target temperature of 99 C (Experiment 2). In a third experiment, we tested exposure durations of 90, 180, and 540 s at 99 C (Experiment 3). Obtaining target temperatures was challenging. For target temperatures of 60, 70, 80, and 99 C, the actual temperatures obtained were 59 to 69, 74 to 76, 77 to 83, and 94 to 99 C, respectively. After steaming treatments, seed germination was followed for 28 d in a greenhouse. Maximum soil temperature affected seed germination, but exposure duration did not. Seed premoistening was of influence but varied among temperatures and populations. The relationships between maximum soil temperature and seed germination were described by a common dose–response function. Seed germination was reduced by 50% when the maximum soil temperature reached 62 to 68 C and 90% at 76 to 86 C. For total weed control, 94 C was required in four populations, whereas 79 C was sufficient in one Norwegian population.
Hot water and cutting for control of Impatiens glandulifera

Ornamental jewelweed (Impatiens glandulifera Royle) is an alien invasive plant in Europe. This annual plant often grows in riparian habitats where herbicides are prohibited. Several studies have reported the negative effect on ecosystem and ecosystem services by this species. However, limited research is published on control measures and the aim of our study was to explore use of hot water and cutting to control I. glandulifera. A lab experiment showed that the lethal water temperature for seed was between 45 and 50 C. In a pot experiment with seeds in soil, emergence of I. glandulifera was reduced by 78% and 93% compared with the untreated control with volumes of hot water (80 C) of 7.2 and 14.5 L m−2, respectively. When treatments were conducted on relatively tall plants (almost 60 cm) in late June, hot water gave significantly better control than cutting. Compared with an untreated control, I. glandulifera cover was reduced by 97% and 79% after hot water and cutting, respectively. Application of hot water to smaller (<40 cm) and less developed plants (BBCH 12–13) in early June and cutting of plants with visible flower buds (mid-July) led to no significant difference in cover. Compared with an untreated control, I. glandulifera cover was reduced by 99% (cut below first node) and 91% (hot water and cut above first node). When relatively tall plants (almost 60 cm) were treated, hot water use was high (31.1 L m−2) and required twice as many work hours (4.8 min m−2) as cutting (2.4 min m−2). When smaller plants (<40 cm) were targeted, work hours and hot water use were reduced to 2.1 min m−2 and 13.7 L m−2, respectively.
Utility of serial 12-lead electrocardiograms in children with Marfan syndrome

Objectives
The goal of this study was to assess the utility of serial electrocardiograms in routine follow-up of paediatric Marfan patients.
MethodsChildren ⩽18 years who met the revised Ghent criteria for Marfan syndrome and received a 12-lead electrocardiogram and echocardiogram within a 3-month period were included. Controls were matched by age, body surface area, gender, race, and ethnicity, and consisted of patients assessed in clinic with a normal cardiac evaluation. Demographic, clinical, echocardiographic, and electrocardiographic data were collected.
ResultsA total of 45 Marfan patients (10.8 [2.4–17.1] years) and 37 controls (12.8 [1.3–17.1] years) were included. Left atrial enlargement and left ventricular hypertrophy were more frequently present on 12-lead electrocardiogram of Marfan patients compared with controls (12 (27%) versus 0 (0%), p<0.001; and 8 (18%) versus 0 (0%), p=0.008, respectively); however, only two patients with left atrial enlargement on 12-lead electrocardiogram were confirmed to have left atrial enlargement by echocardiogram, and one patient had mild left ventricular hypertrophy by echocardiogram, not appreciated on 12-lead electrocardiogram. QTc interval was longer in Marfan patients compared with controls (427±16 versus 417±22 ms, p=0.03), with four Marfan patients demonstrating borderline prolonged QTc intervals for gender.
ConclusionsWhile Marfan patients exhibited a higher frequency of left atrial enlargement and left ventricular hypertrophy on 12-lead electrocardiograms compared with controls, these findings were not supported by echocardiography. Serial 12-lead electrocardiograms in routine follow-up of asymptomatic paediatric Marfan patients may be more appropriate for a subgroup of Marfan patients only, specifically those with prolonged QTc interval at their baseline visit.
Reduced plasma concentration of branched-chain amino acids in sarcopenic older subjects: a cross-sectional study

Branched-chain amino acids (BCAA) are essential amino acids that are necessary for muscle mass maintenance. Little is known about the plasma concentrations of BCAA and the protein intake in relation to sarcopenia. We aimed to compare the non-fasting plasma concentrations of the BCAA and the dietary protein intake between sarcopenic and non-sarcopenic older adults. Norwegian older home-dwelling adults (≥70 years) were invited to a cross-sectional study with no other exclusion criteria than age. Sarcopenic subjects were defined by the diagnostic criteria by the European Working Group on Sarcopenia in Older People. Non-fasting plasma concentrations of eight amino acids were quantified using NMR spectroscopy. Protein intake was assessed using 2×24-h dietary recalls. In this study, ninety out of 417 subjects (22 %) were sarcopenic, and more women (32 %) than men (11 %) were sarcopenic (P<0·0001). Sex-adjusted non-fasting plasma concentrations of leucine and isoleucine, and the absolute intake of protein (g/d), were significantly lower among the sarcopenic subjects, when compared with non-sarcopenic subjects (P=0·003, P=0·026 and P=0·003, respectively). A similar protein intake was observed in the two groups when adjusted for body weight (BW) and sex (1·1 g protein/kg BW per d; P=0·50). We show that sarcopenia is associated with reduced non-fasting plasma concentration of the BCAA leucine and isoleucine, and lower absolute intake of protein. More studies are needed to clarify the clinical relevance of these findings, related to maintenance of muscle mass and prevention of sarcopenia.

Summary
We have some knowledge about how to live in a changing environment. The term ‘stability’ is a foreign word in our language. Our search for adaptation strategies is therefore not connected to ‘stability’ in any form, but is instead focused on constant adaptation to changing conditions.

Climate change is likely to affect the Sámi regions in Norway, Sweden, Finland and Russia, with greater variability in temperature, precipitation and wind, and higher winter temperatures (ACIA, 2005; Tyler et al., 2007). These factors strongly affect snow quality and quantity, with snow quality as a crucial factor for reindeer herding. Considering their experience obtained through time and their traditional ecological knowledge, the pastoral practices of Sámi herders are inherently well suited to handle huge variations in climatic conditions. Reindeer herding and its natural environment have always been subject to large variability in weather patterns, and skilful adaptation to these past variations offers important insights on adaptation to climate change. In particular, it is crucial to recognize the importance of traditional ecological knowledge (Berkes, 2008).
The adaptation of Sámi reindeer herding to climate change is conditioned by its political and socio-economic environment (ACIA, 2005, p. 971; E. S. Reinert, 2006; Tyler et al., 2007). Important parts of the traditional adaptive strategies – the composition of herds and the flexibility to move reindeer herds between summer and winter pastures – are challenged by nation–state policies restricting herd diversity and mobility and by rigid regulations.

Of the 12 children who represent the complete cohort of Norwegian patients surviving the complete palliative operative programme for hypoplastic left heart syndrome, 10 were studied by a pediatric cardiologist, a pediatric neurologist, a neuropsychologist and a child psychiatrist. We found significant morbidity. Hemodynamic function was relatively uncompromised in eight of the patients, but one had significant cyanosis due to use of an operative technique subsequently abandoned and one had obstruction of the flow of blood from the left to the right atrium. Five children had disturbances of rhythm, with one requiring insertion of a pacemaker. One child had epilepsy. Delayed motor development, most often to mild degree, was found in seven children, while six had attention problems. Mental retardation was found in two children and autistic traits in one. Despite these various problems, the parents were seemingly satisfied with their own lives, and the quality of life of their children.
Does social support from family and friends work as a buffer against reactions to stressful life events such as terminal cancer?

Objective: To examine the relationship between social support and emotional functioning and stress reactions. Our hypothesis is that patients who reported a high degree of social support will experience better emotional functioning and less serious stress reactions than patients with a low degree of social support.
Method: The sample was comprised of 434 patients at the Palliative Medicine Unit (PMU), University Hospital of Trondheim in Norway. The patients completed a questionnaire monthly including questions about social support from the MacAdam's Scale, subjective stress measured by the Impact of Event Scale (IES), and emotional functioning measured by the subscale in the EORTC QLQ-30.
Results: Although our hypothesis was not supported at the baseline assessment, it was supported at the second assessment, 2 months later. Patients with high social support reported better emotional functioning and less serious stress reactions, in terms of lower scores on the IES avoidance subscale, than patients with a low degree of social support.
Significance of the results: The mixed findings may indicate that social support has only small effects on emotional functioning and stress reactions. Our results on the second assessment indicate, however, that social support might work as a buffer against reactions toward external stressful events such as terminal cancer.

Deformation migration in an orogen-scale shear zone array: an example from the Basal Briançonnais Thrust, internal Franco-Italian Alps

Combined structural, geochemical and isotopic studies have allowed an understanding of the timing and nature of an orogen-scale fault array. The results indicate that the deformation loci within the internal western Alps, during the Alpine collision, occurred as a foreland propagating thrust sequence. The east to west deformation migration within the internal zones is apparently in-sequence in relation to the external zones. Rb–Sr white mica dating of syn-kinematic greenschist-facies mineral assemblages from the Basal Briançonnais Thrust indicate that thrusting ceased between 27 and 32 Ma, several million years after shearing in the hinterland and several million years prior to shearing in the foreland. The Briançonnais Domain, which constitutes the hanging wall to the Basal Briançonnais Thrust, preserves two major shearing episodes. The first, with a top-to-the-northwest overshear, has been tentatively dated at 45 Ma. The second, a very pervasive, east–west orientated, greenschist-facies event was previously dated at 34 Ma on the hinterland margin of the Briançonnais Domain and has now been dated at 27–32 Ma on the foreland margin of the Briançonnais Domain. The period between 34 and 27 Ma apparently dates the migration of deformation through the relict European passive margin, represented by the Briançonnais Domain. This is believed to be in response to overthrusting of Adria/Africa and its associated subduction complex. Structural mapping indicates that the present Basal Briançonnais Thrust in the Col du Petit St Bernard region, Franco-Italian Alps, is a break-back thrust which cuts through an already imbricated pile. Geochronological evidence suggests that the early imbrication of the Briançonnais stratigraphy occurred prior to full interaction of the European and Adria/African plates, that is, during subduction, docking and escape from the subduction complex under Adria. Therefore, although the present Basal Briançonnais Thrust is a break-back thrust in terms of local structural geometries, it is an in-sequence foreland-propagating structure. Geochronological, micro-structural and micro-chemical data indicate that the Briançonnais Domain in the Col du Petit St Bernard zone is formed from granitoid material which intruded and cooled at approximately 320 Ma. During the Alpine event, deformation and metamorphism were insufficient to affect the Sr isotopic system. This suggests that this portion of the Briançonnais Domain was probably subducted to much shallower depths and underwent much less pervasive deformation than the other internal European basement material.
