Characterising ice slabs in firn using seismic full waveform inversion, a sensitivity study

The density structure of firn has implications for hydrological and climate modelling, and ice-shelf stability. The structure of firn can be evaluated from depth models of seismic velocity, widely obtained with Herglotz–Wiechert inversion (HWI), an approach that considers the slowness of refracted seismic arrivals. However, HWI is strictly appropriate only for steady-state firn profiles and the inversion accuracy can be compromised where firn contains ice layers. In these cases, full waveform inversion (FWI) may yield more success than HWI. FWI extends HWI capabilities by considering the full seismic waveform and incorporates reflected arrivals. Using synthetic firn density profiles, assuming both steady- and non-steady-state accumulation, we show that FWI outperforms HWI for detecting ice slab boundaries (5–80 m thick, 5–80 m deep) and velocity anomalies within firn. FWI can detect slabs thicker than one wavelength (here, 20 m, assuming a maximum frequency of 60 Hz) but requires the starting velocity model to be accurate to ±2.5%. We recommend for field practice that the shallowest layers of velocity models are constrained with ground-truth data. Nonetheless, FWI shows advantages over established methods, and should be considered when the characterisation of firn ice slabs is the goal of the seismic survey.

However, HWI is appropriate only for steady-state firn profiles and the inversion accuracy can be compromised where firn contains ice layers. In these cases, Full Waveform Inversion (FWI) can be more successful than HWI. FWI extends HWI capabilities by considering the full seismic waveform and incorporates reflected arrivals, thus offering a more accurate estimate of a velocity profile. We show the FWI characterisation of the velocity model has an error of only 1.7% for regions (vs. 4.2% with HWI) with an ice slab (20 m thick, 40 m deep) in an otherwise steady-state firn profile.
Characterizing the Outburst of the Supermassive Black Hole in M87

M87, in the Virgo cluster, allows us to study the interaction of a supermassive black hole (SMBH) with its hot gaseous atmosphere. Deep Chandra observations reveal a nearly circular shock front with a Mach number of 1.2 and a radius of 13 kpc which is driven by a central cavity inflated by an SMBH outburst began 12 million years ago. An outburst with an energy of a ~5×57 ergs and a duration of ~2 Myrs provides a good match to all the constraints. For an outburst repetition rate of about 12 Myrs (the outburst age), the outburst energy is sufficient to balance the radiative cooling of the gas. The outburst duration in M87 argues for a “gentle” (long duration) outburst that does not generate strong shocks and where much of the outburst energy is deposited in the cavities that then transfer energy to the surrounding gas as they buoyantly rise.

Relationships between the X-ray and radio behavior of black hole X-ray binaries during outbursts have established a fundamental coupling between the accretion disks and radio jets in these systems. I begin by reviewing the prevailing paradigm for this disk-jet coupling, also highlighting what we know about similarities and differences with neutron star and white dwarf binaries. Until recently, this paradigm had not been directly tested with dedicated high-angular resolution radio imaging over entire outbursts. Moreover, such high-resolution monitoring campaigns had not previously targetted outbursts in which the compact object was either a neutron star or a white dwarf. To address this issue, we have embarked on the Jet Acceleration and Collimation Probe Of Transient X-Ray Binaries (JACPOT XRB) project, which aims to use high angular resolution observations to compare disk-jet coupling across the stellar mass scale, with the goal of probing the importance of the depth of the gravitational potential well, the stellar surface and the stellar magnetic field, on jet formation. Our team has recently concluded its first monitoring series, including (E)VLA, VLBA, X-ray, optical, and near-infrared observations of entire outbursts of the black hole candidate H 1743-322, the neutron star system Aquila X-1, and the white dwarf system SS Cyg. Here I present preliminary results from this work, largely confirming the current paradigm, but highlighting some intriguing new behavior, and suggesting a possible difference in the jet formation process between neutron star and black hole systems.

Summary
Legislatures are critical institutions in the effective functioning of a democratic system and in the policy-making process. In terms of the framework developed in Part I, Congress is the most natural arena for the institutionalized political exchanges necessary to sustain effective public policies. The ability of the congressional arena to play such a role varies substantially from country to country. At the more proactive and constructive end of the spectrum, the U.S. Congress is able to develop its own legislative proposals and has an active role in directing the policy agenda as well as in overseeing policy implementation. Congress itself is institutionalized in a manner that facilitates intertemporal exchanges and that leads to the accumulation of policy capabilities (Weingast and Marshall 1988; Krehbiel 1991). This, in turn, is associated with legislators having the right human capital characteristics to make them productive in those roles (Diermeier, Keane, and Merlo 2005).
The extensive literature on the U.S. Congress provides a detailed and relatively comprehensive understanding of this institution and a set of widely accepted truisms. Members of the U.S. Congress serve long terms in office. They specialize in the topics of committees on which they serve. They play an active role in the policy-making process. As an institution, the U.S. Congress engages in considerable oversight of the public bureaucracy, and it is at the center of policy making.

The Desert Migrations Project is a new interdisciplinary and multi-dimensional collaborative project between the Society for Libyan Studies and the Department of Antiquities. The geographical focus of the study is the Fazzan region of southwest Libya and in thematic terms we aim to address the theme of migration in the broadest sense, encompassing the movement of people, ideas/knowledge and material culture into and out of Fazzan, along with evidence of shifting climatic and ecological boundaries over time. The report describes the principal sub-strands of the project's first season in January 2007, with some account of research questions, methods employed and some preliminary results. Three main sub-projects are reported on. The first concerns the improved understanding of long-term climatic and environmental changes derived from a detailed palaeoenvironmental study of palaeolake sediments. This geo-science work runs alongside and feeds directly into both archaeological sub-projects, the first relating to prehistoric activity and mobility around and between a series of palaeolakes during wetter climatic cycles; the second to the excavation of burials in the Wadi al-Ajal, exploring the changing relationship between material culture, identity and ethnicity across time, from prehistory to the early Islamic period (the span of the main cemetery zones). In addition, some rock art research and a survey of historic period sites was undertaken in the Wadi ash-Shati and Ubari sand sea.

Degradation of phosphors in field emission displays (FED's) is described and related to electron beam stimulated surface reactions between ZnS and residual gas in the vacuum system. The requirements for producing and maintaining vacuums in FED packages is reviewed and limitations associated with the size of the FED's are discussed. It is concluded that vacuum production and maintenance is critical to the performance of FED's, and this is not a simple task.

Following a description of the purpose and participating members in the Phosphor Technology Center of Excellence, research on the growth and characterization of modulation doped ZnS:Mn and of Ca0.95Sr0.05Ga2S4:6%Ce are reported. ZnS:Mn has been grown using MOCVD and incorporation of Mn in 1 to 5 layers from 5 to 20 nm thick separated by layers of pure ZnS from 5 to 50 nm thick. This is shown to result in lower threshold voltages for ACTFELD displays. The luminescence spectra from sputter deposited, cerium-doped thiogallate thin films were measured and the diffusion of thin ZnS passivation layers versus temperature of heat treatment was discussed.
