The Maser Monitoring Organisation is a collection of researchers exploring the use of time-variable maser emission in the investigation of astrophysical phenomena. The forward directed aspects of research primarily involve using maser emission as a tool to investigate star formation. Simultaneously, these activities have deepened knowledge of maser emission itself in addition to uncovering previously unknown maser transitions. Thus a feedback loop is created where both the knowledge of astrophysical phenomena and the utilised tools of investigation themselves are iteratively sharpened. The project goals are open-ended and constantly evolving, however, the reliance on radio observatory maser monitoring campaigns persists as the fundamental enabler of research activities within the group.

Recently, remarkable progress has been made in understanding the formation of high mass stars. Observations provided direct evidence that massive young stellar objects (MYSOs), analogously to low-mass ones, form via disk-mediated accretion accompanied by episodic accretion bursts, possibly caused by disk fragmentation. In the case of MYSOs, the mechanism theoretically provides a means to overcome radiation pressure, but in practice it is poorly studied - only three accretion bursts in MYSOs have been caught in action to date. A significant contribution to the development of the theory has been made with the study of masers, which have proven to be a powerful tool for locating “bursting” MYSOs. This overview focuses on the exceptional role that masers play in the search and study of accretion bursts in massive protostars.

Summary
Exploring the effectiveness of the use of anthologies as a discursive and theoretical platform for celebrating and registering the emergence of Caribbean feminist work, this essay surveys these publications and maps the emergence of Caribbean feminist criticism as a mode of theoretical challenge that enacted a transformative critical praxis that not only centred women’s lived experiences, but also fostered transnational alliances, dialogues and partnerships among women. In reading these texts, the essay notes how a politics of inclusion proved necessary for reclaiming and reconceptualizing Caribbean female histories and reading narratives of gendered lives, alongside an expanded focus on racialized transnational subjects that complicated a black–white paradigm. The essay argues that anthologies disrupt the centrality and singularity of authorship, authority and knowledge production.

Summary
Renowned Egyptian writer and feminist Nawal El Saadawi's phenomenal novel Zeina is strategically set against the backdrop of revolution in Cairo. Revolutionary in its own rights, the novel chronicles female resistance to patriarchal mandates. The poignant and searing critique of the masculinist Egyptian regime should come as no surprise. Mona Eltahawy reminds us that, according to a 2013 Thomson Reuters Foundation poll of women's rights following the Arab Spring, Egypt ‘was judged to be the single worst country for women's rights, scoring badly in almost every category, including gender violence, reproductive rights, treatment of women in the family and female inclusion in politics and the economy’ (Eltahawy Headscarves and Hymens: 24). Shedding light on the precarious position in which feminists in the region find themselves, Khadidiatou Guéye is quick to point out that in the Arab region most women writers’ ‘feminist ideologies clash with the Muslim background of their cultures’ (‘Tyrannical Femininity’: 160). While religion is undoubtedly one of the tools of female oppression, Eltahawy surmises: ‘Whether our politics are tinged with religion or with military rule, the common denominator is the oppression of women’ (18). A consummate feminist and the leading spokeswoman on the status of women in the Arab region, El Saadawi exposes, even as she challenges, the male-centric, patriarchal regime that perpetuates female oppression.
The illegitimate daughter of Bodour, a young university studentturned- literary-critic and distinguished professor, and Nessim, a young revolutionary, Zeina, the eponymous heroine, is abandoned by her mother on the streets of Cairo when Nessim is killed during one of many demonstrations of the repressive patriarchal system. Forced to carry this secret, Bodour writes a fictionalised account of her life, which mysteriously gets stolen. In a novel where female bodies are subject to the worst form of subjugation, colonisation, and body theft, the novel's title, The Stolen Novel, is apt. The theft of Bodour's text/body appears to be an act of revenge for the idea of the book germinated ‘specifically on a night that passed like a terrifying nightmare or an ephemeral dream of paradise when she had eaten the forbidden fruit’ (32).

The RadioAstron space-VLBI mission has successfully detected extragalactic H2O MegaMaser emission regions at very long Earth to space baselines ranging between 1.4 and 26.7 Earth Diameters (ED). The preliminary results for two galaxies, NGC 3079 and NGC 4258, at baselines longer than one ED indicate masering environments and excitation conditions in these galaxies that are distinctly different. Further observations of NGC 4258 at even longer baselines are expected to reveal more of the physics of individual emission regions.

Objective
Many jurisdictions in the USA and globally are considering raising the prices of sugar-sweetened beverages (SSB) through taxes as a strategy to reduce their consumption. The objective of the present study was to identify whether the rationale provided for an SSB price increase affects young adults’ behavioural intentions and attitudes towards SSB.
DesignParticipants were randomly assigned to receive one of eight SSB price increase rationales. Intentions to purchase SSB and attitudes about the product and policy were measured.
SettingA forty-six-item cross-sectional Internet survey.
SubjectsUndergraduate students (n 494) at a large US Midwestern university.
ResultsRationale type was significantly associated with differences in participants’ purchasing intentions for the full sample (F7,485=2·53, P=0·014). Presenting the rationale for an SSB price increase as a user fee, an effort to reduce obesity, a strategy to offset health-care costs or to protect children led to lower SSB purchasing intentions compared with a message with no rationale. Rationale type was also significantly associated with differences in perceptions of soda companies (F7,485=2·10, P=0·043); among low consumers of SSB, messages describing the price increase as a user fee or tax led to more negative perceptions of soda companies.
ConclusionsThe rationale attached to an SSB price increase could influence consumers. However, these message effects may depend on individuals’ level of SSB consumption.

Summary
Executive Summary
This chapter addresses changes in weather and climate events relevant to extreme impacts and disasters. An extreme (weather or climate) event is generally defined as the occurrence of a value of a weather or climate variable above (or below) a threshold value near the upper (or lower) ends (‘tails’) of the range of observed values of the variable. Some climate extremes (e.g., droughts, floods) may be the result of an accumulation of weather or climate events that are, individually, not extreme themselves (though their accumulation is extreme). As well, weather or climate events, even if not extreme in a statistical sense, can still lead to extreme conditions or impacts, either by crossing a critical threshold in a social, ecological, or physical system, or by occurring simultaneously with other events. A weather system such as a tropical cyclone can have an extreme impact, depending on where and when it approaches landfall, even if the specific cyclone is not extreme relative to other tropical cyclones. Conversely, not all extremes necessarily lead to serious impacts. [3.1]
Many weather and climate extremes are the result of natural climate variability (including phenomena such as El Niño), and natural decadal or multi-decadal variations in the climate provide the backdrop for anthropogenic climate changes. Even if there were no anthropogenic changes in climate, a wide variety of natural weather and climate extremes would still occur. [3.1]
A changing climate leads to changes in the frequency, intensity, spatial extent, duration, and timing of weather and climate extremes, and can result in unprecedented extremes. Changes in extremes can also be directly related to changes in mean climate, because mean future conditions in some variables are projected to lie within the tails of present-day conditions. Nevertheless, changes in extremes of a climate or weather variable are not always related in a simple way to changes in the mean of the same variable, and in some cases can be of opposite sign to a change in the mean of the variable. Changes in phenomena such as the El Nino-Southern Oscillation or monsoons could affect the frequency and intensity of extremes in several regions simultaneously. [3.1]
