Ecosystem services related to biodiversity, including cultural services, are essential for agricultural production such as viticulture. In agricultural landscapes, pesticides and mechanization threaten biodiversity, lead to landscape simplification and may reduce ecosystem services. On the other hand, consumers are more and more aware of environmental issues in food production. We investigated if landscape complexity, including soil management practices, was (i) appreciated by visitors and (ii) presented by winegrowers and tourism professionals in the French vineyards with the designation of geographical origin (DGO) ‘Coteaux du Layon’. Our goal was to determine if landscape complexity provides cultural ecosystem services such as aesthetics beneficial for the wine trade and the DGO region's attractiveness. We analyzed the iconographic content and the composition of landscape photographs on 50 websites to investigate if local winegrowers and tourism professionals associate biodiversity in the landscape and soil management practices with wine promotion. A questionnaire was realized to study the perception of local landscapes by interviewing 192 visitors of the region. The benefits of landscape complexity and soil management practices favoring biodiversity in viticulture were known and appreciated by many visitors, even if photographs of wine and traditional practices appeared to encourage wine purchasing. Local winegrowers’ representation of the DGO region only partially served these preferences; instead they mainly presented the wine-growing region by photographs focusing on wine bottles and vineyards. Consumer's preferences showed that complex landscapes could provide cultural ecosystem services that winegrowers are still less aware of. Therefore, complexity-targeted landscape planning including vegetation cover in soil management should be included in policy recommendations as agroecological measures for sustainable DGO production.

Diving induces large pressure during water entry accompanied by the creation of cavity and water splash ejected from the free water surface. To minimize impact forces, divers streamline their shape at impact. Here, we investigate the impact forces and splash evolution of wedges entering water as a function of the wedge opening angle. A gradual transition from impactful to smooth entry is observed as the wedge angle decreases. After submersion, the wedge experiences significantly smaller drag forces (two-fold smaller) than immersed wedges. Our experimental findings compare favourably with existing force models upon the introduction of empirically based corrections. We experimentally characterize the shapes of the cavity and splash created by the wedge and find that they are independent of the entry velocity at short times, but that the splash exhibits distinct variations in shape at later times. We propose a one-dimensional model of the splash that takes into account gravity, surface tension and aerodynamic forces. The model shows, in conjunction with experimental data, that the splash shape is dominated by the interplay between a destabilizing Venturi-suction force due to air rushing between the splash and the water surface and a stabilizing force due to surface tension. Taken together, these findings could direct future research aimed at understanding and combining the mechanisms underlying all stages of water entry in application to engineering and bio-related problems, including naval engineering, disease spreading or platform diving.

A magnesium–lithium (Mg–Li) hybrid battery consists of an Mg metal anode, a Li+ intercalation cathode, and a dual-salt electrolyte with both Mg2+ and Li+ ions. The demonstration of this technology has appeared in literature for few years and great advances have been achieved in terms of electrolytes, various Li cathodes, and cell architectures. Despite excellent battery performances including long cycle life, fast charge/discharge rate, and high Coulombic efficiency, the overall research of Mg–Li hybrid battery technology is still in its early stage, and also raised some debates on its practical applications. In this regard, we focus on a comprehensive overview of Mg–Li hybrid battery technologies developed in recent years. Detailed discussion of Mg–Li hybrid operating mechanism based on experimental results from literature helps to identify the current status and technical challenges for further improving the performance of Mg–Li hybrid batteries. Finally, a perspective for Mg–Li hybrid battery technologies is presented to address strategic approaches for existing technical barriers that need to be overcome in future research direction.

Plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PECVD) is being developed as a flexible coating technology for a variety of oxides. In this paper we discuss the synthesis of transparent conducting oxides (TCOs), insulating oxides and electrochromic oxides. Tin oxide was synthesized using mixtures of SnCl4 and O2. By proper control of processing conditions the resistivity of this material may be varied from 10-3 < ρ < 105 Ω-cm. Films of varying resistivity were employed as buffer layers in CdS/CdTe solar cells. Preliminary device results have demonstrated that integration of a tin oxide buffer layer was very beneficial for cell performance. In addition, we demonstrate the PECVD synthesis of WO3 from WF6/O2/H2/Ar mixtures. The plasma process space that yielded adherent, transparent tungsten oxide was established. The deposited films were both amorphous and reversibly electrochromic. High temperature annealing above 400°C converted the films into a polycrystalline state.

Tin oxide thin films were deposited by plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PECVD) for applications as a transparent conductor. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and atomic force microscopy (AFM) were used to quantify the crystal structure and morphology of these films both as-deposited and after annealing conditions. Annealing was performed in an argon environment as a function of time and temperature. Although annealing was found to significantly improve electrical properties, the structure as measured by XRD remained largely unchanged. Hall effect measurements show that the improvements in resistivity are due to increases in carrier concentration. XRD did reveal that films deposited on the powered electrode had a film orientation that was distinctly different than films deposited on the grounded electrode. These changes suggest the importance of ion bombardment energy. The structural changes were correlated with improved electrical properties.
